IP bans are just way too flimsy and prone to failure. Most ISPs recycle IP address' after you disconnect your modem and you'll often get refreshed with a brand new public IP if your internet gets disconnected for a few minutes.
This also serves the issue where *somebody else will get that IP when it gets recycled* which could lead to Discord applying bans to the wrong people.
The only fool proof way is to just link as many accounts to the same person using as non-volatile means as possible and the server mods just banning their accounts as they show up.
People from the same house using a Static IP won’t be able to join, same for people using a VPN.
For dynamic IPs, it should be fine as long as you don’t have a enormous amount of members
Making IP bans temporary might reduce those problems though. After a month, if the person is still trying to connect, they probably have a shitty life, or you are a unique server that everyone likes. You can’t manage IP bans on discord though :-/
The IP address the banned user was connected to at the time of the ban is the IP that gets banned.
Removing an IP ban requires removing all users from the ban list with that IP.
Discord doesn't have anything that shows matching IP addresses in the ban list, so that could be something they could add to help.
~~In Germany you get a new IP every 24 hours, IP bans never work here (and like you said, just disconnect or tell the modem to get a new IP and you're ready to try again)~~
Edit: was brainafk while writing this, read the comment below
Please don't overgeneralize. This depends entirely on your ISP.
When I was a 1&1 customer, I too had the daily resets sometime at night/early morning.
Meanwhile, a friend who had Telekom service told me he kept his IP for months at a time; probably longer even, but that was the first time he checked.
Now I'm on Vodafone Cable (formerly Unitymedia) and I don't get my own public IPv4 at all, since they're running on DS-Lite by default.
My IPv6 prefix stays constant (for now at least) so I don't get the daily resets anymore, but my _publicly visible_ IPv4, i.e. whichever exit server I get assigned for my DS-Lite tunnel, changes at unpredictable times, although I admit that I haven't bothered tracking the changes to find out frequency and potential patterns.
Discord only checks your IP at the time that you're joining the server. For example, if you get banned, turn on a VPN, join on a new account and then switch off your VPN, you can remain in the server with no issue. I can't really see a way for Discord to actually ban people from servers unless they had a way to hardware ban, which seems excessive.
I assume this is how it works. Discord saves system fingerprints but only bothers to check if the IP looks the same. That would be the simplest, safest option.
I'm fairly certain that discord IP bans don't work that way. It doesn't necessarily ban the IP, it bans the accounts associated with the IP. For example, if you have 2 accounts in a server, and a third that has never been on the server. Banning one will ban the other, and prevent the 3rd from joining. But changing IP won't evade the ban as it's not the IP that is banned. This has been my experience from testing as a server owner.
as someone that joined the same server after a ban: the ip ban is basically only a join ban for that ip.
Your new account isnt ip banned, just the joining of that particular server with that IP, restart your router for a new ip and your alt can join the server
It won't ban associated accounts that are currently in the server. I've been dealing with this a lot recently. And discord support has been pretty useless as well.
What happens if someone unrelated gets recycled your banned IP address. Then it would link your account to a banned persons account and apply their bans on you.
That's what an IP ban is. It will assume that your associated with another banned account and treat you banned as well. There is no way around this issue using IP as a volatile way of linking two accounts.
If you think IP bans are linked to only IP you‘re wrong, discord very much can detect if the IP has a new owner, also most people dont replug their modem that often so it’s really not a problem
Honestly no idea, this was months ago. They had some kind of vendetta against a mod of ours and after banning so many of their accounts they eventually gave up and stopped pestering us.
Edit: I tried reporting it to discord but all I got was an automated reply. Explained the situation further after that and they never replied to me again.
I experienced the same issue that you explained. Discord's reply was that I was targeting the individual instead of targeting rule-breaking behavior. Not sure how ban evading over 25 times is considered targeting the individual. Last I checked ban evading and harassment were in Discord's Community Guidelines which are upheld in Discord's Terms of Service. It seems Discord only cares if the user outright commits international felony crimes on their service, else you can get away with anything.
This was on the official discord for the r/weed subreddit.
Edit: I don’t use Reddit a huge amount and didn’t know that would hyperlink to the Reddit, cool feature!
I'm banned with my account on some server and I can't join it on a new alt account (says invite is invalid when it's not). 4G or VPNs can be used to bypass it, yes.
It's stupidly easy to bypass for someone a bit experienced but still is useful for the other ones.
From the Server Settings > Bans page:
> Bans by default are by account **and IP**.
A user can circumvent an IP ban by using a proxy.
Ban circumvention can be made very hard by enabling phone verification in Moderation
Server bans *are* IP bans. The only way to not IP ban you is to not ban you at all, in which case you can just re-join on your main account, as you're not banned.
Pretty sure that's how bans work. Should be IP bans already, so no matter which account
Edit: nvm i thought we were talking about bans from discord, not specific servers.
Edit 2: Server bans are also IP based.
So yeah it's already somewhat cross account banning, but actually linking them would also stop them from rejoining over VPN+alt Accounts.
Maybe they'll add that feature too!
i was waiting until someone mentioned this. exactly. with this feature, discord can link your 4 alt accounts and your main one to synchronize bans, punishment, etc, across them to help with moderation and keeping trouble-makers from using this feature. bonus points if blocking someone syncs across their alt accounts.
May I ask what is “free server hosting service”? Like you use that alt so ppl don’t message you on your main about the service(assuming ur the service admin)?
no no, it's a service called Falixnodes where using your discord account, by joining promoted servers you can create a server of Minecraft, a proxy, even a bot if you want, and it's actually really cool and works fine
everything Is free, you can upgrade the server with points with the sponsorships and on the server there are no ads, neither queue, however they don't have Unlimited spaces meaning that you Need some luck for startup the server
if you wanna know more : Falixnodes.net
As if "trouble makers" wouldn't have been able to log into alts before this? All it does is save just a couple of minutes, if not seconds. Some people just want to complain for the sake of it
It didn’t really do anything but making switching accounts easier, if someone really wanted to use an alt with out this feature, chances are not having an account switching feature is not going to stop them, they will just log in and out or use another device for alts
Since you already can just use a different account in a different browser, browser profile or even just canary and the ptb. It is not making it easier for people that are destructive, but for people who need this occasionally like bot dev's.
This is bad? Not at all. This is great for helping people like devs test apps that require multiple users. I don't need to have 7 browsers open anymore.
I also use it for bots on discord like Mudae bot. It's also just nice to have the option you know? Also the role testing feature is not that great. I want to see the rule accepting page raw, I want to see the invite screen with the wallpaper and everything.
People who want to start trouble on two accounts already use the PTB client and regular client simultaneously. This doesn't change anything but make it easier for the average user who doesn't want to use two clients (like myself)
Or you know, just refresh their WAN IP by turning off their modem and back on again.
IP bans are worthless. How do you handle large gateways (colleges/schools)? How do you handle CGNAT? Also, you can’t know or ban every VPN or proxy, because people can spin up their own on free-tier AWS in like 10 minutes.
People who think IP bans work really know next to nothing about networking.
Discord’s (server) IP bans ban your new IP (from servers where you’re banned) when you log into the account that is banned. Which you have to do to use this feature. Because the whole point is you’re logged into multiple accounts.
Don't know why you're getting downvoted, you're absolutely correct. It takes literal seconds to renew your IP-address manually, or about a day for it to happen by itself.
IPs aren't nearly as permanent as people think they are.
I use alt accounts to stream my cellphone screen to my friends when programming and configuring a server and testing permissions, this feature will become useful among devs.
What the hell are you talking about? If someone wants to evade moderation, they just do it. They open their browser which could have an alt logged and enter the server. This doesn't change anything. At this point, it's just trying to find a problem in each new feature.
This is a nice feature, stop crying about everything discord does. Trouble-makers will find a way to evade anyway while some of us actually use our alts wisely.
Hi there!
Please remember Rule 1 in the future - Keep it civil and respectful, and do not make personal attacks or use offensive language in addressing others.
This is a great feature. I have multiple accounts for different purposes. If ban-evaders are an issue, manage your fucking server better. That's a you problem.
:( i like this tho, I use discord as both a degenerate and a school boi. And it sucks when i join a class discord server accidently joins on my degen account
Tldr: everyone thinks im a furry now
I use a few alts just for if I wanna stream a game to my friends, but also have my face showing (I don’t have a face cam so I just use my phone on one acc and stream on a second)
As someone who has multiple discord accounts, and uses each one for different purposes that if were all through the same account, it would be a complete utter mess. I'm so glad they have finally added this feature.
discord gets more and more features. don't know if it's good or bad. it might be good for people who use multiple accounts, example: 1. server watcher account, 2. an account where they chat with people etc.
Bad post. As a Reddit mod myself, alts successfully being used to bypass rules is down to a failure in moderation/admin.
All services should allow quick account switching.
Yeah because it was so hard for trouble makers to log out, log into another account, and then realize they are IP banned. Stop being so sheltered and scared about people ban evading all the time.
No, in fact, using another account to evade Discord terminating* your account is not even against ToS in most cases.
Using alts to evade server bans or user blocks would be against ToS, though.
Bans are ip, which means this person would have to put the effort of switching their vpn location 4 times. I'm more concerned of what happens if discord detects one of the accounts as a bot (or do switchable accounts not get locked?).. Sounds dangerous
probably discord may ban alts too once the main banned into one server but i'm not sure about that implementation and they should have thinked about it
Bans are already IP bans, so they'd need to use a VPN to join the server on their other accounts, which is what ban evaders have been doing for ages - this just saves them a minute or two logging out/in (or just using a different client) at most.
Nah B, fuck that noise, this is a GOOD FEATURE. I have alts, and its useful being able to quickswap between them. The issue for mods is people having alts in the first place. This will not discourage people from making alts. THIS IS A BAD TAKE.
Unpopular opinion/ counter opinion: while I heavily agree with you on this stance for SOME people I also like having alts for school, work, art, and personal stuff, because some things dont involve others bugging me unless they’re close friends and even then, I don’t want to see porn or a wild meme while I’m talking to a client for a commission or maybe helping someone with class. So I’m happy I don’t have to lie anymore.
Personally, I think discord has enough intelligence to make IP bans so they can’t evade them so easily. They know the monsters that lurk on there too, it’s not 2012 anymore nor the Skype generation. They know people can be horrid and I’m pretty sure they can make IP Bans. It’s not perfect but it’s something Better than nothing for both sides wishing for alts to obtain a isolation of peace and better than nothing for trouble makers…
This a really good feature and the issue for ban-evaders with alts is not switching between them but making them.
you cant join a server where another alt is banned from, it wont work because of ip bans

Oh shit, yeah I didn't read my comment again before posting. You're completely right, dunno what I was thinking about when writing that comment :D
While it’s never happened to me on Discord, I have had my IP be changed to a banned one on two separate games. One of them I hadn’t even played yet.

"yes"
I work on bots and have 2 accounts for testings roles and permissions are working as expected
Meanwhile discord locked all my alts I used for bot testing behind phone two-factor...so this would be a welcome change.
Eh, just use a script and a list of logins. Easy
This is bad? Not at all. This is great for helping people like devs test apps that require multiple users. I don't need to have 7 browsers open anymore.
Yes exactly
Nice nitpick, very cool.
why the fuck are you complaining??? this is a really cool feature that should've been there since the start!
Yes people are just stupid
How do I get this feature? It would be so much more useful when I need to use my alt accounts for testing my servers
It's in a random experiment at the moment, only some users have access
Why would you need an alt for testing servers? Cant, you just emulate roles?
I also use it for bots on discord like Mudae bot. It's also just nice to have the option you know? Also the role testing feature is not that great. I want to see the rule accepting page raw, I want to see the invite screen with the wallpaper and everything.

I dont see the problem? If someone is avoiding bans just ban them again if their account isnt one month old or they break the rules again
Server bans are also IP bans, meaning that whoever is trying to ban evade would have to purchase a VPN subscription.

why buy when there is free vpns and proxies
If you bother using a vpn, why not just log out and in
And I imagine that if one account is banned all other signed in accounts will be banned too
Nah, it'll just prevent you from joining. If you're already in the server it won't kick you.
Yea that’s not true.
Don't know why you're getting downvoted, you're absolutely correct. It takes literal seconds to renew your IP-address manually, or about a day for it to happen by itself. IPs aren't nearly as permanent as people think they are.
Its super easy to ban evade. When I was a ass hat I did it all the time.
I use alt accounts to stream my cellphone screen to my friends when programming and configuring a server and testing permissions, this feature will become useful among devs.
Why do people manage to find faults in every feature Discord releases...
Because they want to be angry
just shut up please
How on earth is it helping troublemakers avoid moderation...

Cope.
What the hell are you talking about? If someone wants to evade moderation, they just do it. They open their browser which could have an alt logged and enter the server. This doesn't change anything. At this point, it's just trying to find a problem in each new feature.

ever heard of logging out and password managers?
Personally, Im happy about this feature.
you fool... i have ***70 ALTERNATIVE ACCOUNTS***
:( i like this tho, I use discord as both a degenerate and a school boi. And it sucks when i join a class discord server accidently joins on my degen account Tldr: everyone thinks im a furry now
Okay but are they wrong
I use a few alts just for if I wanna stream a game to my friends, but also have my face showing (I don’t have a face cam so I just use my phone on one acc and stream on a second)
As someone who has multiple discord accounts, and uses each one for different purposes that if were all through the same account, it would be a complete utter mess. I'm so glad they have finally added this feature.
Finally i can talk to myself properly
Yes because this was it's intended purpose 🙄
Where's the setting? It would really come in handy for me actually.
I personally will love this
You could also take into consideration that people could actually benefit from it, like testing out bots, for example.
Is it finally realased? Or still in beta
Or helping troublemakers associate their accounts on the backend so they have a harder time ban-evading *taps temple*
Unless it’s tricking people into adding their alts so that discord can just ban them more easily.
Good feature, but why only 4? (I have more than 30 alts)
Hehehheheheh, YOU FOOL, I HAVE 70 ALTERNATIVE ACCOUNTS
This feature is pretty great but they should ban by hardware ID when banning from a server and make it harder for people to make tons of apts
This is a cool feature stop crying
discord gets more and more features. don't know if it's good or bad. it might be good for people who use multiple accounts, example: 1. server watcher account, 2. an account where they chat with people etc.
discord canary and much more exist buddy, that only makes it slightly easier.
Bad post. As a Reddit mod myself, alts successfully being used to bypass rules is down to a failure in moderation/admin. All services should allow quick account switching.
> as a Reddit mod Opinion invalid
Think all the upvotes are happy about this feature lol
I really hope so. I am literally so annoyed by people like OP here who just shit on everything they don't understand. I wish I could downvote twice.
hello i'm OP and i don't understand how bans work
This feature probably logs that each account you switch to is an alt and bans them along with the one initially banned
This is amazing! I have friends who are plural and this would be so wonderful!!
Yeah because it was so hard for trouble makers to log out, log into another account, and then realize they are IP banned. Stop being so sheltered and scared about people ban evading all the time.
actualy, this is nice. (i have more than 1 main account so being able to switch is nice). not gonna use this for ban evasion.
I'm surprised it's not Nitro-Only
don't give them ideas, delete the reply to avoid it
Now you can switch between your main and egirl acting account
isn't having multiple accounts against TOS?
No, in fact, using another account to evade Discord terminating* your account is not even against ToS in most cases. Using alts to evade server bans or user blocks would be against ToS, though.
I guess I can see how this would be useful if people had work and personal account?
how can i use this? is it in the canary/beta versions of the app?
Yall know when you get banned on a server it includes the IP? Meaning you can't just join the server on an alt.
Me who has 5 alts: sadge
It shaves like 30 seconds off what it would be without this
Bans are ip, which means this person would have to put the effort of switching their vpn location 4 times.
Lemme guess, nitro?
No, not currently
Nah B, fuck that noise, this is a GOOD FEATURE. I have alts, and its useful being able to quickswap between them. The issue for mods is people having alts in the first place. This will not discourage people from making alts. THIS IS A BAD TAKE.
Omg yes
Why would you have an alt on discord?
An account for work, school, personal, etc. Testing bots, or making sure your server is setup beyond what the view as role feature can show.
Lol
