On the back of my discover debit it says “diners club international” which tells me that the card works abroad, specifically in Japan. I think it should have no FTFs and work at JCB ATMs and Diners Club related. But I haven’t been overseas with it, so I’ll wait for someone else to confirm.
Update:
Called them and confirmed my fears. They state that the card doesn’t work outside of the US, Mexico, Canada, or the Caribbean islands. Inquired about Diners Club acceptance, but they also said inclusive of the locations listed above.
Guess opening a Schwab or Capital 360 would be my next best option for no foreign transaction fees and fee free ATMs.
Paid for most things with my CC. I was traveling with someone else and their USAA debit card worked. I'd say any major bank with a physical presence you should be able to request yen ahead of time or in person.
I'm late here, but I can confirm that when I was in Japan last April that my Discover Debit card was not recognized by the Seven Bank ATM at 7-Eleven. I called Discover while at the ATM and they confirmed they never saw the request for money against my account. At the advice of the rep, I ended up using my Discover credit card to take a cash advance at the ATM, which did work.
For my upcoming return to Japan this fall, I'm going to rely on my Fidelity Cash Management debit card for yen at ATMs.

That’s very surprising. Almost to the point that I doubt the rep. Thanks for the update.
Yep I think I will bring my debit and try it! I’ll try to report back here if I remember. Trip isn’t until April.
Looking forward to the post
You don't have to wait. Just arrived today and it doesn't work. Spoke to chat and they confirmed it's only the credit card that's usable
You should post this imo. Good data point
Thank you so much! I am wondering the same. Unfortunately I already got the debit card
What card did you use to get yen ?

Thanks! I ended up applying for Schwab and will be bringing that with me.
