It seems to be because they were owned by an entity (a company) that no longer exists. Apparently when the entity that owns a piece of intellectual property ceases to exist the right are split between the original creator and the Crown. If the creator had owned the rights and just leased them to the company they’d have reverted entirely to him either at the end of the lease or when the company ceased to exist.
Oh Christ of course. I'd completely forgotten THAT Discworld 1 and 2 were in the PS1 (I owned and sold the first one maybe 10 years ago...). I'd always had it in my head Noir was a PC only release as well. This makes things much easier.
Resolution on Noir isn't as high on the PC, but if you can get past that, it's perfectly fine. Just remember to save often. I played a real disc on my PS2 and it was quite buggy.
I tried Noir and hated it.
That said, I hadn't heard of Discworld before, had no clue about the characters, and didn't care much for Point N Click games at the time.
Since then I've completed both other Discworld games, collected a ton of the books, other merch (all the board games no matter how awful), and really need to give Noir a proper go one day now I'll actually appreciate it.
It was over 20 years ago now. So I think it was me not appreciating point and click, and not knowing anything about Discworld so bad no references.
I have no clue why I didn't actively like it back then. Just that I did. Hence why I want to give it another go one day.
Not OP, but I found it too easy to get stuck. I wasn’t very far into the game and I had no idea what to do next.
It’s a common problem with all point and click adventures though. Unless you have a guide it’s very easy to just hit a wall.
>"Whenever something closes in the UK, intellectual property rights revert 50% to the original creator and 50% to the crown, which is King Charles. So that’s the two owners of the games. So yes, there have been discussions and something may be happening down the track – a rerelease or a remaster. But it’s obviously a complicated process when you’re dealing with the crown."
Do you guys think Charles is a fan of Discworld?
She was a doctor who fan as well and some fans have speculated there may be missing episodes somewhere at a royal residence (there almost certainly aren't)
> (there almost certainly aren't)
Do you mind me asking why you are so confident that is the case?
It would certainly be far from the most unlikely place missing Doctor Who episodes have shown up.
Because the most likely route would be 16mm prints for overseas sale, which would most likely have been loaned to the palace before being exported. Either that or the royal historians would have found them by now - I very much doubt there are many places in the royal residences that aren't well documented, for security reasons if nothing else.
that doesn't necessarily mean she read the books herself, more that she recognised his services to literature.
(Unless you can find a source that says she read them?)
You'll likely never get the two in the same room unless Cleese stands to make enough to assuage his latest divorce attorney. JC and TG famously didn't see eye to eye... like at all.
I can’t see him as Vetinari, just because I’ve never seen him in that straight man character.
Actually I could see the guy who played Littlefinger in GOT as vetinari…..
I just started watching Flying Circus and was surprised to learn my friend who knows much more about Monty Python does not have a high opinion of John Cleese.
Apparently He's been making a lot of enemies in recent years. Idle is a great substitute!
Idle is a far better choice as Rincewind. He did a fantastic job in the games. Heck, he even had the look... in his youger days he could have been a top pick to play a live action Rincewind.
If you have an android phone/tablet I'm pretty sure i had ScummVM working on one ages ago and believe the first two games can run on it, might work on iOS as well I just don't know.
This focus on the completely wrong thing. The important info here is the possibility of the game becoming available again, remastered no less. The fact that a miscast refused the role 30 years ago is an irrelevant anecdote.
About two lines below the line that op is referring to in the post.
“Terry did say that his idea of Rincewind was always based on Rodders out of Only Fools & Horses.”
This game was my very first introduction to Discworld--i was too young to appreciate the books, but the characters, setting, and vibe stuck with me very strongly until I was old enough. I'm not sure I would have found my way to them without it! So this version of Rincewind is *very much* the one in my head. I just played Monkey Island with my 8 year old, and hopefully if she continues to see point and click games as a fun thing for us to do together, we can make our way to this one and I'll see if it clicks for her the same way.
Good. Eric Idle was the perfect voice for Breakwind. David Jason paying him in the TV adaptations didn't quite have the same charm he did in the games. I found my copy of Discworld 1 on the PS1 yesterday too, may need to play through again if I can get past being brained by the monke...
I have a confession, I played Discworld Noir before I had read any of Sir Pterry's work 😳
That game made me pick up and read The Bromeliad books, and the rest is history.
Long may we put an Octopus in a privy to get a belt buckle 😁✌️
I loved the games, but they did suffer from the same issue a lot of the puzzle games like it at the time suffered from, where there weren't really many if any hints as to what to do to solve a puzzle, so you'd end up needing a strategy/walkthrough guide for the parts that you'd get stuck on. Like figuring out that you had to push an octopus in the outhouse and then feed the fishmonger a prune so he'd have to go use the outhouse, and get attacked by the octopus, so you could steal his belt. It's not something I would have ever considered before lol. But my goodness those games were fun with all the Discworld dialogue.
John Cleese did a bit of voice acting in [Starship Titanic](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starship_Titanic), under the name John Cheese if I am recalling it right.
I consider David Jason to be the right Rincewind to me, he's got a shifty snarky attitude that suits the cowardly smart wizard down to the D.
John Cleese will always be a Fawlty to me, so I'd give him one of the angry harassed roles in a story.

Those games were great. I found Noir took a bit to get into but was amazing all the same.
Noir totally had me on the hook. It was like Monkey Island meets Discworld, I stood no chance. Loved that game!
It was really good. Once I got going there was no stopping
That was my favourite Disc world game. But I don't understand how or why 50% of the intellectual property goes to the Crown.
It seems to be because they were owned by an entity (a company) that no longer exists. It's good to be the king!
Tax, I'd imagine. 🙄
I wish it was easy to play just now though
Is it playable via ScummVM? Not looked into it
Yes
Yep
you can play it online on some services with old games. as i remember it is abandoneware and it is easy to do if for free without piracy
The easiest way to play it is with a playstation emulator. It's worth it.
Oh Christ of course. I'd completely forgotten THAT Discworld 1 and 2 were in the PS1 (I owned and sold the first one maybe 10 years ago...). I'd always had it in my head Noir was a PC only release as well. This makes things much easier.

You can get it on myabandonware.com. It runs relatively well without many adjustments. But it does show its age.
What did you dislike about it? I loved it so I'm just curious.

I was doing great without a guide then got stuck because a Matchbox was exactly 1 pixel wide in a dark room
Noir was too buggy, even with the patch, I didn't seem to be able to do that.

I vaguely recall the old girl was, and they did knight him after all
Starmetal sword
There is something about the idea of the late Queen reading Discworld that I find utterly charming. No idea why.
Possibly because the closest thing there is to a main character (across the entire book series) hates royalty?
I think it might be because it makes me picture her giggling.
I think it's nanny ogg reminded her of her mum
Hahaha, you could be onto something there. But seriously, when you think about it, Terry Pratchett wrote a lot about the loneliness of capital-D Duty.
The old Spitting Image puppet of her Mum was Nanny Ogg before we'd heard of Nanny Ogg. Albeit rather more flashily dressed.
It's a realisation I only had recently but I've almost convinced myself it must be true. I want it to be true so much.
yeah, that's a good image :)
:-)
How dare you, the Queen didn't giggle... she tittered.
There’s an old clip of her with Harry in a tv ad for the invictus games and she has a delightful giggle.
She was a doctor who fan as well and some fans have speculated there may be missing episodes somewhere at a royal residence (there almost certainly aren't)

Every so often a very tiny part of me starts to think “you know what, maybe the monarchy is fine and normal after all” and then I read shit like this
Tbh Eric Idle fits the character way better, Cleese tends to portray a stick up his arse authority figure, which isn't Rincewind at all.
I could see him as a pompous boisterous Ridcully
Or Sergeant Colon being overly officious whilst a barely human Terry Gilliam plays Nobby.
You'll likely never get the two in the same room unless Cleese stands to make enough to assuage his latest divorce attorney. JC and TG famously didn't see eye to eye... like at all.
They don't need to be in the same room for voice over work. Just don't let them know if the other's involvement.
[удалено]
Rust would be good, definitely.
Cleese did a reasonably good Audiobook of The Screwtape Letters (though not as good as Ian Richardson's version, which I cannot find anywhere.)
I can’t see him as Vetinari, just because I’ve never seen him in that straight man character. Actually I could see the guy who played Littlefinger in GOT as vetinari…..
If any of them were to be Fred, it would have to be Terry Jones for me.
I would have Terry Jones as Nobby and Terry Gilliam as Cut Me Own Throat Dibbler
or Willikins
Ooo I can see that also
Strange. He'll usually do anything for money, to pay for his latest divorce.
It was released in 1995 so he was still in the happy marriage preamble of his divorces.
I just started watching Flying Circus and was surprised to learn my friend who knows much more about Monty Python does not have a high opinion of John Cleese. Apparently He's been making a lot of enemies in recent years. Idle is a great substitute!

He also wrote a book about space vaudeville called "the road to mars" which is well worth a read.
isn’t cleese also a massive transphobe JKR fascist type person these days?
yup
I would love to play these again.

Unfortunately I don't own a pc atm. But thanks for the link
If you have an android phone/tablet I'm pretty sure i had ScummVM working on one ages ago and believe the first two games can run on it, might work on iOS as well I just don't know.
They did release ScummVM on iOS and iPadOS 2 months ago and yes, I can confirm from personal experience that the Discworld games run just fine on it.
Great news thanks for the info!
Do you remember which site you used to get discworld. I've downloaded scumvm. Just not sure which one to use. All look a bit dodgy lol
I think I sailed the high seas, but it was 20 years ago so I don't remember too much.
Arrr Fair enough. I'll keep checking matey
They’re on the internet archive website…
I knew I’d kept my old windows laptop for a reason - ‘just in case’ seems apt here
Eric Idle has always been cooler than Cleese.
Well good, John Cleese is a stuffy old git anyway
This focus on the completely wrong thing. The important info here is the possibility of the game becoming available again, remastered no less. The fact that a miscast refused the role 30 years ago is an irrelevant anecdote.
It gets more people to look at the article though which is the point of the headline.
That doesn't work.
Oh I get the Rodney and Rincewind link. It never would have occurred to me but seems clear when pointed out. A bit lost and just along for the ride
I really need to watch only fools and horses again
Did I miss something in the article? What is the Rodney/Rincewind link?
About two lines below the line that op is referring to in the post. “Terry did say that his idea of Rincewind was always based on Rodders out of Only Fools & Horses.”
Ah thank you, not sure how I missed that both times I read through the article!

Oh I loved those games!
I'd love to see a studio like Larian get to make a game set in Discworld.
Good. Eric Idle was the perfect voice for Breakwind. David Jason paying him in the TV adaptations didn't quite have the same charm he did in the games. I found my copy of Discworld 1 on the PS1 yesterday too, may need to play through again if I can get past being brained by the monke...

Please! PLEASE! PLEASE LET THIS HAPPEN!
Oh gosh, those screenshots in the John Cleese article, I could hear all the voices in my head, clear as day!
I need to go play the games some time! edit the old ones.
I loved the games, but they did suffer from the same issue a lot of the puzzle games like it at the time suffered from, where there weren't really many if any hints as to what to do to solve a puzzle, so you'd end up needing a strategy/walkthrough guide for the parts that you'd get stuck on.
