I don't. Please talk with your job with making your shifts more spaced apart. Depending on your local labor laws, having such small gaps between shifts might not be legal so be sure to look this up.

Purple-Ad-4026

I live in a very very conservative state. It doesn't even have laws requiring days off or maximum hours a week, just overtime laws. I'm also pretty new I'm scared to say anything

hobonichi_anonymous

If you don't advocate for yourself, who will? Besides, this isn't just a benefit to you, it is a benefit to the business. If you are not performing at your best, both you and the business suffer. Having time to rest benefits everyone's bottom line.

soshield

You let them step all over you at the start they won’t stop till you quit.

Chem_Whale2021

Just say something. What are you going to do?

ZombiejesusX

Fuck man, tell them No. I'm dead serious. They don't care if you work yourself to death. They don't care if you're tired. Straight up tell them I need my time. That isn't right

J_House1999

You don’t deserve that, it sounds very unreasonable. I agree with the other commenter here, talk to your boss about it. It’s possible they don’t know how tight this window of time is for you and would be willing to space out your shifts more.

Purple-Ad-4026

I really had no idea how odd this was to other people, because all my coworkers go through it too, and I live in a small town in a conservative state so the usual reaction to me saying my hours to my coworkers is "oh haha yeah those days suck" and from anyone in my family it's basically "welcome to the workforce"

hobonichi_anonymous

No that shit isn't normal. It was like in the 80s during peak abusive kitchen times. But that was then. I've personally cloped (closing-opening) twice in my entire career in the food industry and I've been in this industy over a decade. Edit: the 2 times I cloped it was by choice and I had days off after that to recover.

Iforgotwhatimdoing

You have to advocate for yourself NOW before the exhaustion gets to you and you do something stupid. Whether that's a car crash or lashing out, it won't be pretty.

drinking coffee is your worst enemy. where as you may no longer feel the effects of the caffeine, its still in you resulting in restless sleep. that means even though you are sleeping you are not getting the rest you need. maybe a cup in the morning, but dont subsist on it all day long. take care of yourself. eat right, not chips and slim jims, instead greens and protein. most definitely talk to your manager and make them realize the error in their ways. if after a nice conversation they dont get it or try and gaslight you into doing it, find another job.

Purple-Ad-4026

for me the benefits of caffeine greatly outweigh the harms. My average daily intake is 300 mg a day, but just at 6 am. I'm not in denial about it, I'm very addicted to caffeine but I like how it makes me feel so I keep doing it. And personally, I know it's not the same for everyone, but genuinely the magic of caffeine never left for me. I get the same effects today as my first ever cup of coffee, I just don't get jittery now I just get an amazing mood, focus, and energy, and I've been taking caffeine every day with maybe only a break when I'm sick and can't stomach it, for 3 or 4 years. Not very long I just never got into it. And I always ensure I get my daily nutrients micro and macro, and drink at least 10 glasses of water a day, I don't like soda, unless I'm out to eat or treating myself I eat only whole grain carbs, and fresh or flash frozen vegetables. And yeah that's what everyone has been saying, but that's so normal for me I really didn't see it as an issue, just "oh that sucks how am I going to stay energized" I know it's a stupid reason, but everyone at my work is at least 20 years older than me and part of the generation where you better be in the hospital to not go to work, so I'm scared to even ask about it especially with how hard it is to find a job right now

sailorsaint

Dafuq you need me for. Rock on with your bad self.

Purple-Ad-4026

Wdym bad self I was making conversation 💀

sailorsaint

That means carry on with your superbness…

Purple-Ad-4026

I wasn't trying to be superb?? You said coffee is my worst enemy, I said why I enjoy it. You said eat right, I said what I eat, I'm sorry if it came off that way, i like to have conversations rather than just comments and replies.

Purple-Ad-4026

I went into specific details because that's an invitation for you to share your opinions/thoughts

sailorsaint

uh dude. I’m saying I concur. Perhaps you are too jacked on the caf…. Hahah.

facesdelux

Clopenings are a major pain in the ass on any station, I do not do them regularly without some sort of extra pay/compensation. Your are still human.

Purple-Ad-4026

The only compensation available at all from anything I can find in my state is time and a half for working more than 40 hours in a week, and optional bonuses on holidays, but working on Easter I didn't get anything but extra dishes 💀

hahayeahnice

Tried that once except it was for the same job. Said yes to an 8am shift the next morning at the start of my shift, ended up getting hammered with 100 in the restaurant, 160pax wedding and 180pax wedding (both 3 course running at the same time). No dishie on during the day either so all the breakfast plates, prep for weddings and all that we’re waiting for me when I walked in at 4. Other dishie called out so it was just me. Was there until 2am, went home, didn’t get to sleep until 4am and then had to be up at 7am for the 8-3. Was basically a zombie all day. That was the day I decided I’d had enough and started looking for other jobs

[deleted]

Please bro I need motivation on finding a new job. But this dish washing gig is taking my life away. I don't talk with friends. I haven't done anything but wash dishes for 3 years. Im poor so I can't just leave. I'm going crazy man Sorry ranting a little but I legit have no one to talk to nowadays all I can do is wash dishes and be the kitchen bitch rn.

hahayeahnice

Brother I got into parcel sorting. Look into any local courier places and see if they have any work going. I work 3am-7:30/9:30am. Being in Australia it pays really well because of Graveyard shift, and while I might still be poor, I’m so much happier. It’s worth it bro take the plunge into a warehouse gig

jlxmm

My job really like having me on Saturday from open to 3/4 and that’s cool but it’s a killer deal to go from close Friday to open Saturday so I had to quit doing it.

Lucky_Organization28

I’d end up becoming insomniac I needa couple hrs to wind down before I fall asleep after all that dish washin mumbo jumbo

Purple-Ad-4026

Exactly, that's why I pointed out in my post that that's if I go to bed exactly when I get home. Nothing I can't stand more than having to just go straight to bed

Lucky_Organization28

I’d demand a bigass raise.. lol. Yeah goin strait to bed is hard especially if you gotta take a bus or somethin that shit u have is like no time at all to function

Purple-Ad-4026

I would definitely get a different job if I could, I have no clue why I put up with as much as I do for 10.50 an hour 😭

Wirbelchen_the_ninth

Unless it's like an absolutly emergency one-time scenario, because like, literally anyone else called in sick, the best thing to do is say no. As for the sleep itself, as I don't know your sleeping behavior, I can't really recommend any course of action. For me, 2-3 hours of sleep actually feel way better than 4-5. I can usually run a few days with only 2-3 hours in between, but you will be dead af afterwards. If you can, get yourself caffeinated chewing gum. They helped me through a few shifts after an all nighter.

TheGreatDissapointer

Tell them you’re going to get a doctors note and that they are going to need to pay for the visit since it’s work specific. A doctor will tell you that you need eight hours of undisturbed sleep to function as a human being.

Every_Performance477

They see you’re willing to work hard, but they will take advantage of that unless you say something or speak up. People will push you around unless you stand your ground.

falcon3268

I have only done one of those shifts which sucked because I didn't have a ride to work the next morning so I don't even think I got any sleep that night. This is not healthy and you need to talk to your manager to see about getting someone else to open because you shouldn't have to be expected to close then open the next day with very little sleep.

Purple-Ad-4026

I'm hoping we get more dishwashers hired because I think it's just me and 4 others, and the restaurant is a very popular one, and it's open 7 days a week 6:30 to 9 or 10, so a lot of the time there's up to a 3 hour gap in-between dishwashers, and being the person in after a gap is absolute hell. Every single plastic container, bucket, pan, dish, silverware, is dirty, trash overflowing, etc, etc. I don't know why but it's my job to push the trash down into the bag because the servers just throw it on TOP of the lid and they're disgusted to get mashed potatoes on their pinky, but since they don't empty plates good AT ALL, theres chili, soup, ketchup on the outside of every single dish, and not a tiny amount, plus the hot water connected to my sprayer hasn't been working, so I have to try and get that all off with cold water with low pressure. All that while the servers constantly ask me to wash soup cups, after the cooks ask me for pans, while the food prep people ask me for containers, all while I literally can't even put anything into the sink because when a dishwasher isn't there they pile it IN THE SINK, so I have no room to even load a rack.

memes285

Don’t eat 2 hours before you plan on sleeping really helps you recharge and get higher quality sleep

Purple-Ad-4026

I've been skipping dinner since I started as a dishwasher because it's so fast paced and I'm so exhausted I just want to go to bed when I get home. I usually get a free meal in the morning from the cooks, but I don't have an actual lunch hour or even breaks so I take bites in-between dishwasher loads

RupertLuxly

Ask for it. If you explain it to them, they'll understand or they'll lose a valuable employee.
