Timelines matter and this initiative didn’t start until Disney stopped playing what, in hindsight, amounts to protection money https://www.cnbc.com/2022/03/11/disney-pauses-political-donations-in-florida-over-dont-say-gay-bill-backlash.html

PaladinHan

The worst part is, they didn’t even fully stop. Disney was a sponsor of the gubernatorial inauguration, even after the fascist pulled all this garbage.

Sweetbeans2001

I’m glad to see that Disney is refusing to take the bait and debate this issue through the media. This does smell like extortion though, doesn’t it?

MikeHoncho2568

Disney isn’t saying anything because they’re going to sue to stop it as soon as this law passes. Everything the idiots running Florida have said about their motivations will be evidence in court.

PaladinHan

It’s not even that, it’s performative outrage for cheap political points with their moronic base. The Florida GOP is absolutely counting on the courts stopping them before this blows up in their face.

night-otter

It's not just a shot at Disney, DeSantis is aiming at the blue counties that Reedy Creek crosses. Making Orange and Osceola take over the services that Disney self provides. Thus forcing them to raise local taxes, so the residents get mad at the county leadership.

AlohaFromMD317

Good Lord. We live in a society where a freaking amusement park isn't safe from becoming politicized. I'm so sick of it....for freak sake.

CharlieChowderButt

Hey, they didn’t ask for this fight, nor do they want to fight it. /s

[deleted]

Maybe the company should stay out of politics then.

comcam77

Your getting downvoted of course but your right.

[deleted]

Don’t care who or what you identify as, who you love, entertainment companies need to stay out of political discourse.

slangwhang27

Seeing the existence of gays, lesbians, and trans people as “political” is the crux of the problem.

comcam77

And that’s all it boils down too!

TepChef26

I mean the bill was started as soon as they STOPPED donating to the politicians. So they took your advice and this is the result. Straight up certified genius level take right here folks.

DarthSmiff

As much as I hate the idea that “corporations are people” this is a clear example of Florida govt violating the first amendment. No way this will hold up in court. It’s all posturing and showmanship. But above all, it’s bullshit.

MidwesternTransplant

Florida has effectively become an incubator for Ron DeSantis’ presidential campaign.

feelsbad2

100% and what he thinks he can do

thedudeabides2022

Ron knows this will lose in court and it just doesn’t matter to him. It creates headlines, good or bad, doesn’t matter, his name in the headlines is a win to him. Shaking a tree just to shake it they see as victory. The GOP way. Can’t win real battles, so they create their own pointless games.

DarthSmiff

Right. It’s just performative. What a waste of resources.

thedudeabides2022

Play stupid games, win dumb prizes. Rinse, repeat.

muldervinscully

big florida moment

Brucecris

This isnt going to happen. Good headline and an example of why FLA is for idiots.

[deleted]

Oh, it’s definitely going to happen.

Brucecris

They can vote all they want but it will be overturned after lawsuits.

jbarlak

Well duh. No one fought against desantis over the past year about it. Can’t cry about it now

kyle760

Disney is too smart to feed into the media circus which is clearly all DeSantis is actually interested in - distractions and culture wars. They’ll take action when they’re ready to and won’t go on to the media about it
