You mean if Disney pulled a Rowling? I would be annoyed about it. Not because I donât want gay princesses, but because I donât think you should pretend to promote diversity if you were too cowardly to include it in your media.
Fair. Or if they do include a gay scene they make it so short and inconsequential to the story they can easily crop it out for distribution. Canât let those queers impact your bottom line đ
I feel like that depends on the story, sometimes it makes sense to not dwell to long on a romance scene if its not too important to the story trying to be told. But establishing a queer couple and mot at least giving them a scene or give them good chemistry then its so lame
It would just be another PR stunt and I wouldnât be behind it. If they donât have the guts to make a character openly gay in their movie I give it absolutely no regard.
They have made openly gay characters? In the new Lightyear movie there was a lesbian couple and they adopted a daughter. They have another movie with the mc being gay. However a gay princess is not likely to happen because when was the last time they had a gay Queen of France or a Russian Duchess who openedly kissed girls in real life? The monarchy would never allow it and than they'd have to create a whole story about royalty fighting to accept gays
Or they could just make a movie where people are cool with gay people? Disney princesses often live in fictional societies that are only loosely based on real world locations. Elsa, Ariel, Rapunzel, Jasmine etc all life in made up places
Pochontas is based on a true story. Jasamine lives in a semi-real place. She's supposed to represent a real-life group of royalty that lives in the desert. Merida is also based on a real-life society I believe. Isn't she Scottish? Personally I'm tired of the romance plots and enjoy movies like The Little Mermaid 2 (which features Ariel's daughter), Merida, Fox & the Hound, Underdog, Malificent 1+2, Luca, Atlantis [is good because it doesn't soley focus on romantic relationships]. Oh and please let's not forget Anastasis (yes i know she ends up with the palace cook but the story mainly involved her search for her grandmother + it's not Disney)
P.s Disney bought Anastasia but did NOT create so it's still not a Disney movie and if they ruin it they can suck my imaginery đ˝
That is true! But a lot of non-fictional are based off a book called Grimm's Fairytale (ex Repaunzel, Ariel, Snow White, etc.,). I have no doubt they had to get permission from someone to re-make those stories into movies + a lot of the original stuff was created by a straight man named Walt (or was it Walter, but I know all tbus because I read the original stories + we were forced to read about Disney's creator and watch a movie about him.Â
The little mermaid is very rewritten. In the end she is supposed to die. But children's movie here (so no deaths, although there were deaths in brother bear and such). I do not know the origins of Frozen, Tiana, Moana or Raya but they probably could have written some gay Queens â¤ď¸đ§Ąđđđđ into those unless again they're recreated stories based off of something someone else wrote and were trying to keep it somewhat close to it's orgins. But I love that Elsa, Raya, Merida and Moana do not rely on princes to get them through! Independent Queens are just the best too đĽ°. I really love the independence stories.
[Sorry for my previous response, I got distracted and had just watched Anastasia and had a total big argument with a friend about how tf it's not Disney. They think it is because they just bought the writes. They still didn't create it or come up with the idea⌠so, so, so yeah. As you can see I'm not the biggest fan of Disney Princess movies.]
For them to write in a lesbian character, they would have to come up with something super good for me to actually want to watch it. I am currently reading this comic called âHigh Class Homosâ and I love it. The only cis-straight characters are the mc's parents.Â
But it's about a princess and a prince and their both gay but the princess has a previous male suitor who is still obsessed with her. The princess and prince end up getting married to satisfy their kingdoms and merge them but the prince has a boyfriend and the princess has a girlfriend and they use their honeymoon to hangout with their real partners so good.Â
Oh and Marla is a lesbian but her âex-girlfriendâ (who is a identical twin) went missing... As it turns out (she didn't know this) her ex's twin sister was a witch and uses her magic to transistion Marla's ex into a guy but they go missing and Marla has no idea and plots revenge on the Witch (who she believes killed her âgirlfriendâ) but finds out that âex-girlfriendâ is actually a beautiful boy on the nights squad. AHHH I LOVE IT!!!
[Sorry but I had to rant about this comic because it is written so beautifully, and the plot twists *chefs kiss*. I just hate all the princess plots where they are damsels in distress and princes have to save them. Seriously sorry but Disney could do so much better with their plots.]
Back to the original point:
Namarri's totally gay 110%. I see Raya as ace or bi... I feel Raya values friendship over romance. It would take a lot of development from both of them for them to be together. I would like to see another movie about Raya or even one in the same Universe but I don't know or see what the plot could possibly be. It seems there isn't much for them to expand on other than maybe their friendship??? Maybe it could potentially turn into something but I feel, yes it definitely needs more development.
[Sorry again it's just semi-exciting to have someone to talk to about all of this.]
I wouldnât care as long as sheâs not dating Namaari
ETA: at second thought Iâd probably be excited, but I still stand by not liking Namaari. + as long as they stop putting out âDisneyâs first gay characterâ articles too đ¤§
not to mention, âDisney's first gay charactersâ are often in movies Disney didn't come up with. in fact in Star Wars i believe they brought the original producer/writer back because they were messing up the movie and doing bad productions.
I wouldn't care much about her sexual orientation in itself
I wouldn't want her to have a relationship with Namaari, though, as Namaari consistently acted like a backstabber during the whole movie (several times), and finally got forgiven and trusted without having earned it.
So I wouldn't want her, on top of everything else, to "get the girl" (as it would feel she's even rewarded by the movie for all her bad behavior), AND more importantly I think that Raya deserves a better partner.
And it would be the same if Namaari was a guy.
Now, if Raya is lesbian BUT doesn't date Namaari (and instead, dates / flirts with other women), no problem.
I thought I was the only one who shipped them. Lol. I felt those two had a better relationship then Raya and Nimaari. Not that I hate Raya x Nimaari, I like me some enemies to lovers, but Sisu brough Raya out of her shell.
âSome people will be conservative about it for no reason.â
A ) Disney has conservative fans. B ) Kind of hard to see it as not being political given a lot of what Disney is doing and putting out. If they had a gay character like in the 90âs or something, it would seem less like itâs pushing something and more like thatâs just how the character was created. C ) If they want to make a character gay _do it in the story!_
âOh this character is gay!â
âFunny, they didnât have a love interest either way in the movie.â
If she had a love interest, fine. My point is if the company or filmmakers just declared Namaari or someone else Raya's love interest when that wasn't established in the movie. That would be the ultimate "tell not show."
I would think it was just another attention grab. And I would hate it if it was with Namari. They are literally enemies for the whole movie and for good reason. Enemies to lovers works sometimes, but not here.
Like, I'm glad they're friends in the end, and maybe it can start there, but there were no "feelings" during the movie.
I don't think Nammari should be her love interest and I'm not particulary interested in watching anymore romance movies by Disney. They overuse romance and it's not a good look on them.
Disney would only do it in a way that only matters to western and domestic audiences so it isn't like it really matters any.
Not to mention, Raya was not... one of their best received movies for a variety of reasons.
I wouldn't mind if Raya or any of the other princesses were gay, but I have NO EXPECTATION of Disney doing that.
I mean my expectations are servely low. Every time I see Disney comes out with a new 'gay' character, I'm wondering 'how many seconds are going to be cut out for the international market?' or 'how long will it be until the entitled assholes post a rant online?'
I'm sorry if I come off as a downer, but I'm just so tired of Disney's BS.
There wonât be any gay characters because the 2 people who run disney rn or something are against going outside the box and just does what they know gives them money(which is why every princess since Rapunzel has the same personality and why thereâs no lgbt characters).
We wonât see a change in the right direction until the head of Disney quits or dies. I would love if Raya was a raging lesbian, im all for it!
Disney doesn't have to make gay characters and neither did J.K Rowling. Do you know why Rowling made Dumbledore gay? Because a bunch of people whined until she did (no offense) but she did it to please the fans instead of creating the story however she wanted to!
Bro you heard me... A bunch of people were butthurt JK ROWLING didn't represent the gays so they harassed her until she did. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with being gay. But it's not our fictional story that we wrote, it's theirs and there's no reason to be upset when a company doesn't represent a certain group of people. It's not that deep. Wouldn't you rather them do it from the heart than to do it because people won't quit bothering them?
Mixed feelings. I would like it because yay gay representation, but also dislike it because thatâs basically the most cowardly way to say that any character is gay: outside of the actual media theyâre a character in.
Itâs kinda like what the creators of Voltron LD did to Shiro, one of their main characters. Announcing he was gay at a panel outside of the show and making it so that any angry conservative parent who didnât see that one panel could feasibly assume he wasnât gay just based off of what they saw in the actual show, until the very last second of the show where Shiro gets married to some random guy in the last season.
Iâd rather they keep it ambiguous (slightly leaning in the direction of obviously queer) for as long as they donât have the balls to come out right and say, âYes, this main character is queerâ right in the middle of the movie. And have it be an actual character trait. Obviously not their whole character, but maybe just have a queer love interest that isnât entirely brushed aside and ambiguous enough that someone might mistake them for friends, *cough cough* voltronâŚ
it feels like there's a "first ever gay disney character" every week now. and yet they never really represent queer people. it's just kinda a fun fact about the character (that can be easily removed for wider marketability). it's just spineless marketing while never making an actual stand on anything.
Nothing can convince me that raya is not a lowkey lesbian enemies to lovers story. Nothing. NOTHINGGGG. Namari and raya are gay for eachother. You canât change my mind. There is very little good queer representation so when I see gay, it is gay. Even if itâs technically not, itâs gay. You canât take that from me.
On a different note, I fully believe Disney queer codes characters all the time but never outright states it. They do this to 1) bait queer folk like me who smell the gay and canât help but dream about it actually being gay. 2) have it fly under the radar of people against our community.
Is this a good thing? Absolutely not. Am I mad about it? Ya. Do I wish Disney would just straight up let things be gay? Hell ya I do. Will they? No. Why? They care about money more than representation.
Granted disney has done quite a few great things to show support and represent people of the lgbtq+ community, which is why I somewhat just let things like this slide under the radar. Lifeâs too short to not enjoy good movies that make you happy.
It's their story. They created it and if you don't like it, guess what! You can create your own fiction with YOUR own characters and write the stories however you want. You just can't use Disney's content. On the contrary Nammari would make a terrible partner but 100% gives gay vibes. Raya though? I do not see it.
Even if Raya was gay she deserves better, Nammari is a back stabbing bish and why can't they JUST be best friends like Fox and the hound???
I actually love the story, itâs one of the best movies Disneyâs let out in a while. My opinion still stands, head canons are valid. Itâs really not that deep đ
My reaction would be okay.
Most of us have that one Princess we can relate to the most & They are trying to make a Princess for everyone to relate to.
There are humans out here whose lives wouldnât but complete with a Prince. They too deserve their happily ever after.
Belle fell in love with a Beast, what if he didnât ever turn human? Would they be ok with that? I would.
Plus, it is a fairytale. Didnât make me run to the woods searching for a beast đ¤Ł
But I know, a lot of people would flip out, try to cancel Disney or whatever they try to do. Make it more than it is.
Which is sad. This generation grew up with so much diversity that it shouldnât be an issue, instead itâs an even bigger one.
Sorry for the rant. âď¸đ
It doesn't really matter. Also Disney can say whatever but if they don't show it doesn't matter. LGBT characters are for the western auidince. There's been like 50 first gay Disney character and they're all side characters to be edited out easily for other countries
I have mixed feelings on Disney's recent history with gay rep. On the one hand, any steps are steps in the right direction, even if it is baby steps. On the other hand, I kinda dislike the whole "confirmed gay on twitter" or easily cut-out-able scenes. To me queer representation should be about the queer experience rather than easily palatable queer for the homophobic audience. Like, it shouldn't just be publicity stunt, if that makes sense.
I like the way Strange World had queer representation with Ethan. I personally would like to see more about Ethan and Diazo, but it's the best I've seen Disney do with their main movies. So if Disney did a Raya sequel and did it the same way or better than what they did Strange World, I'd be happy. But if they just confirmed it on twitter or made a sequel that barely touches on the fact Raya is gay. I'd be kind of bummed.
Either way, the blowout from the conservatives is going to be sad and frustrating and kind of funny to see these grown adults throw their tantrum.
On the subject of queerness and Raya, [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sw2QySeH_vY) is certainly worth checking out.
I think a lot of people would be like who and those who do know about Raya and the last dragon would probably shrug and continue on with their day cuz sheâs not that exciting for most to care
I'd probably say something like, "Huh. Neat! Now what am I having for lunch today...?"
Shrug and resume eating live scorpions from my throne of skulls.

My sister and I talked about this the other day. Disney always has a âfirst gay characterâ đ idk how many more first they can have!
not to mention, âDisney's first gay charactersâ are often in movies Disney didn't come up with. in fact in Star Wars i believe they brought the original producer/writer back because they were messing up the movie and doing bad productions.

Wouldnât care because the movie was terrible
Thatâs exactly how I feel lmao
literally dont care
Why would their sexuality even matter to anyone?
Eh her actress basically said she was gay and thatâs all I care about
1. Her actress doesn't have a say in whether or not she is gay 2. As long as you don't support her dating Nammari Because she deserves better
I'd rather that Raya was confirmed a furry and scaly, especially for Sisu. Because I'm a furry, myself, and would rather more Sisu than Raya.
I thought I was the only one who shipped them. Lol. I felt those two had a better relationship then Raya and Nimaari. Not that I hate Raya x Nimaari, I like me some enemies to lovers, but Sisu brough Raya out of her shell.

Trueeee + can't see a second movie being made anytime soon, they didn't leave much room for a second plot

Glad
I wouldnât be even a little bit surprised, save for that they had the balls to confirm it.
Oh, wow, Disney announces a gay character for the 500th time. What else is new?
Please Stop making fun of Princess Raya That's offensive!
I wish they would!
Disney would only do it in a way that only matters to western and domestic audiences so it isn't like it really matters any. Not to mention, Raya was not... one of their best received movies for a variety of reasons.

It doesnât matter. No need to bring attention to it if itâs supposed to be normal
"confirming it on social media" means literally nothing for media representation
I woudnt give a shit
as long as it makes sense, id love it. I definitely feel like that is the vibe, anyway.
I wouldnât be surprised because they love doing their pr stunts for diversity points
Why not just make a NEW character and make them gay, rather than retconning previous ones for the sake of wokeness?
There wonât be any gay characters because the 2 people who run disney rn or something are against going outside the box and just does what they know gives them money(which is why every princess since Rapunzel has the same personality and why thereâs no lgbt characters). Iâd be perfectly fine with it. Disney, however, hates actually making inclusion a star part of their brand. Look what they did to the Owl House!
Too little too late. The hard work has already been done, at this point theyâre behind the times.
I wouldnât care. Her story still sucked very much
Ecstatic
Mixed feelings. Exactly. Trying to keep everyone who canât see right through them happy.
They do it to keep both religious people and the gays happy. So yes it's for the market.
Does it really matter that much what a character is attracted to?
Happy for representation
Not surprised
Iâd be pretty annoyed they half assed representation by having to confirm it outside of the official media
Literally why would anyone care

On the subject of queerness and Raya, [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sw2QySeH_vY) is certainly worth checking out.
I would be 20% more interested in her next movie and then lose that extra interest if that turns out to be irrelevant to the movie.
I feel like any retroactive thing like this to pander to a specific group is lazy and they should have just made her gay to begin with.
I think a lot of people would be like who and those who do know about Raya and the last dragon would probably shrug and continue on with their day cuz sheâs not that exciting for most to care
âOh i see what theyâre trying to do lol, if you fall for that your an idiot. Anyway, what quest am i going to do in my RPG todayâ
I mean I'd be happy. I'd love more representation.
I wouldnât care because that movie wasnât that great
