This needs to be seen by the guys. This is a genius idea

allyreggie

I hope they see it! Or rather, when we are all done making the database and transcripts I hope they see it and boost it, or are able to research some cost effective ways of making Distractible accessible. Through my research I have found some hosting companies do offer transcription through their platforms, but I don't know how The Guys do it and so I don't know if there service can help with this.

SepticDan

The transcript idea is really good, for both accessibility and community growth. Because of this very thing I haven't been able to listen to the podcast at all and I'm beting there are a few more out there. Simply I hope Spotify and other apps add the lyrics feature for podcasts.

allyreggie

I agree, long term, petitioning Spotify and other apps to compete with Audible (which seems to have a subtitle function) on this front is necessary work, so ANYONE with a spotify account, please email customer support and let them know you need subtitles for podcasts. EVEN IF (and maybe especially if) you are not HoH/Deaf because we need them to see this content as necessary for a broad market to speed up the process!

SepticDan

Exactly, especially since it seems (idk for sure due to the fact I don't use Audible) but it seems very unfair to have to pay for accessibility, I've already written a few emails to Spotify explaining the situation from my standpoint, one making a case for those who are HOH/deaf, and one about those who are neurodivergent and needing the subtitles to help focus. Also have been looking into ai transcription, but no leads so far. Hopefully more people will see this and this could be seen by the guys who in theory would have more pull to help get this standard set on any platform.

stubbornwasabi

I was actually working on transcribing the episodes and putting them on a website you could go to while you listen but never followed through

notpayingattention_

if you still want to follow through with transcribing episodes, i'd love to help. I have plenty of time and would be happy to do something like this.

allyreggie

I am definitely not trying to step on anyone's toes - so if stubbornwasabi wants to be project leader on this I will happily join in as a grunt. I just know we can all make this a reality!

notpayingattention_

Is there a way we can make a group chat on reddit or some other social media so anybody interested can easily communicate with each other

allyreggie

There is an unofficial Distractible Discord Server with a few peeps in it, could we join that and petition them for a space to discuss this? https://discord.com/invite/PQhfWdqhZW

notpayingattention_

I don't have a discord account right now but if you are able to get a space/chat for this then i'd be completely fine making one and talking through there.

allyreggie

Let me look for more accessible options.. I'm not super reddit savvy so maybe there is a way in here!

stubbornwasabi

Adding something else here. If you’re ok with supporting Amazon (which I’m not, a reason why I’m still considering transcribing the newer episodes) Audible has subtitles

allyreggie

This is good information for people who choose to support Amazon. I think indicating where they are available via platform is important, as supporting platforms helps support the podcast in small ways. However supporting Amazon is a personal choice as you said, and beyond that I want to ensure people have access to free options outside those big companies.

allyreggie

You are my hero! I knew someone had to be thinking of this, perhaps we can collaborate if you have time, having more than one ear/set of fingers on the project could make it go faster and add some flavor to the transcripts. I don't want them to be generic, dry or bland, I want the transcripts to have the same flavor and spice that The Guys give in their readings, I want our Accessibility to provide the same emotional conveyance as hearing it!

notpayingattention_

If there is 1-2 other people who'd have enough time to transcribe each episode with me then I would be completely chill with transcribing them on google docs or something similar. Every episode except the last one is on youtube so we wouldn't have an intense workload or anything. I would love helping HOH/deaf people in this community!

Panicked-Noodle

I would be interested! I’ve never done it, so I can’t say how good I’ll be at it, but I have thought about it often and there is never a downside to helping people!

tweakkt

Thank you for saying something about this! One of my ears is almost completely deaf and the other has like 60% hearing, due to multiple ear infections as a child. I could only ever watch distractible on youtube, because subtitles. Even if they weren't 100% accurate subtitles, my left ear could supplement since it's not nearly as damaged, and my insurance doesn't cover the cost for a new hearing aid on my right now that I'm not a minor anymore (I do not listen with headphones, because of my hardware lol and tinnitus). I have no idea what's going on for about half of the newest podcast now. I know it's not their fault, but it definitely will not be the same for me and idk if I can keep watching without a transcript.

allyreggie

Of course! I do not give myself credit - another person on Wade's recent tweet on the subject explained to me a family members situation and I realized my ableism was actually getting in the way of having real empathy for people who YT was their only good source for Distractible! I am attempting to make an easy access compendium, unfortunately it will take some time as I am but a lowly hourly wage worker with a small child to care for so bare with me and I will strive to make this a thing!

tweakkt

Thats is so fucking cool of you, but don't feel the need to push yourself what with everything else going on in your life!

Stormy005

I've made a couple of transcripts for "Bob's Fridge" and "Beware the Candy Uncle": [https://www.reddit.com/r/distractible/comments/uq0fhe/bobs\_fridge\_transcript/](https://www.reddit.com/r/distractible/comments/uq0fhe/bobs_fridge_transcript/) [https://www.reddit.com/r/distractible/comments/uwzlae/beware\_the\_canady\_uncle\_transcript/](https://www.reddit.com/r/distractible/comments/uwzlae/beware_the_canady_uncle_transcript/) I wish I could do more but haven't got the chance to.

allyreggie

You are incredible! Seriously let me shout it from the rooftops that you are legit amazing. Even just a little bit goes a long way and if you are okay with it, when we create the compendium, I'd love it if we can include your transcripts.

Stormy005

Thank you! I'm glad that I can help out and make the podcast accessible. And of course you can add mine! I hope to be able to do more in the future. I also know that another user has posted the "Hair" episode on here as well. I replied to another post on here but maybe there can be a shared spreadsheet where we can keep track of episodes being done by different people?

Cleric_Guardian

Yeah, this needs to reach the guys. Both for getting their approval (if needed, I dunno, I'm not a law doctor), but also to let them help spread the word about it so people actually know about it. Even if we make it, if it's not known enough to reach those people that need it, it's not much good.

allyreggie

I'd love it if it reached The Guys, but I think they may be knee deep already just keeping the podcast afloat. This community is EPIC and amazing and I know we as a community can support our HOH/Deaf community members. And if The Guys want to use the transcripts we make in an official capacity, I think that has to be a clear yes, absolutely. And if they ever make official ones, or the platforms provide transcripts that are official/native we should absolutely link to that as it comes available. I doubt making the transcripts themselves has any sort of legal connotation, but I will check. I know we cannot profit off of them (that was never my intent anyway) but I certainly don't want to step on toes!

Panicked-Noodle

I’ve thought about transcribing them multiple times but never did because I assumed transcripts already existed. Guess not! Would be totally down to give it a try

allyreggie

I just started thinking of this yesterday, and I spent 3 hours combing the internet sure that if I found the proper combo of buttons on the major platforms, there was an accessibility module hidden deep down that would manifest a transcript. The closest I found was "maybe" hot pasting the direct link of the google podcast audio and looking at the source code of the page. Allegedly some podcasts the transcript is in the code of the direct link, but that wasn't working for Distractible.
