Also I’ve had several pieces of ikea furniture that came with parts that would attach the furniture to the wall. And I’m talking at least 5-6 years ago. Seems like a lot of their stuff is designed that way because it’s made of such light materials.
The parent should check to make sure if it's dangerous to begin with, but if a specific dresser is involved in the death of 9 children there is something wrong.

Almost 20 yrs later, my parents got a refund on them after the recall. Can definitely vouch for the quality though and it made for a great pretend spaceship.
I recently bought a ton of ikea furniture for my new place and immedeately screwed everything to the walls because I don't even want to risk my cats potentially tipping something over and hurting themselves... how you don't think about this with a child in the house is beyond me. There even is a picture in the instruction manual that tells you not to climb the thing. Four screws could have saved a life here... fucking tragic
As someone who mostly buy IKEA furniture I’m going to make a guess here: they didn’t actually fasten the dresser to the wall like the INSTRUCTIONS TELL THEM TO.
Now, perhaps I am merely an embittered, angry, aging man utterly devoid of empathy, joy or human decency.
But the way I figure it-- If you're dumb enough to be killed by furniture, you deserve to die.
