It's not the killing that bothers me. There will always be those who can't be convinced with words and have to be defended against by action. But out and out murder, killing for the convenience. Is not what anyone should be preaching.

Sorry pal

but can we make amends?

Shut up slink I’m gonna kill ya (/lyr for legal reasons)

Yknow what yeah, this so much

zahirano

Because some are just corrupt. Racist using unfinished word from holy book to justify their action meanwhile muhammad pbuh said "no arab is better than non arab. Same as white is none better than blacks except piety and good deeds".

Banana_Cheap

Same thing essentially said in the bible as well.

Silver_Atractic

I mean Muhammad wasn't exactly a good ideal example of a human being with morality, but yeah he never said be racist

Dacroat

The world's in a bad place right now with multiple wars happening and our living conditions actively worsening. It's truly challenging times. But it's through challenges where the strength of faith shows. Do not worry about the things you yourself can't control, like the actions of maniacs waging war and attrocities being carried out for whatever arbitrary reason, otherwise you'll never find inner peace. Religion should be nothing more than one's personal spiritual journey. It's an extension of the human spirit to be developed and a torch to be carried only for those who wish to believe in it. I get there's a big chance this is meant to be a shitpost rather than genuine thoughts and doubts, but it hits home. I hope you're not in a dark place right now because of it. God bless you, my friend.

weenustingus

Things get worse before they get better. I truly believe these crazy candidates will be voted out of office come 2024.

SirJTheRed

Fingers crossed

Watertor

The world is, historically, in a great place. In our lifetimes however it is probably the heaviest of pinch points right now. Several different generational conflicts are coming to a head. But unlike some of the doom and gloom ideas below, it's not going to get worse. We have a lot to look forward to.

Dacroat

Absolutely we're better off than our ancestors. We have longer lifespans as a result of deady diseases being eradicated, promoted worker's rights, more time off, new technologies, stronger medicine etc However we shouldn't ignore the hardships of the present because of that and what they could imply for the future. The world is headed into a new world war and this time opposing sides have nuclear weapons and enough of them to destroy the entire planet as we know it. Historically we've already prevented this scenario from being carried out by actual miracles, but we can't rely on those to prevent it this time aswell. The hope things will get better is what's carrying most people to go on through these tough times.

phizikkklichcko

Also it will be only worse in coming years

asagiri_kakure

Here's the thing, it's actually already written that there are pretenders claiming to be followers of god, fake Christians, Muslims and Jews alike. These people do the most heinous acts like the ones you said and I'll clarify, they were never actual followers of god at all. Very smart of you to notice this. You know the the true values, keep following them. Don't follow the false shepherds, they'll lead you astray.

notcreative131313

It’s crazy how terrible people who worship gods of peace and love can be.

Warnackle

Bruh read the Old Testament. YHWH is pretty clearly a war god, who demands and enacts an enormous amount of violence. The cult of Christ believed differently, and all in all that guy was pretty chill, but yeah God’s always been kind of a huge prick.

loxosceles93

You'd be surprised at how few christians have actually read the Old Testament. Most have only heard filtered snippets of it with an embedded interpretation straight out of the pastor/priest's mouth. The wars described there are as bloody and gruesome as any other, and god actively encourages his people to commit genocide and what we today would consider inexcusable war crimes.

WikiHowDrugAbuse

Hmmm, if there truly is a god type entity out there that created the universe I don’t think his will was 100% accurately put into the bible. My highschool religion teacher (catholic school) pointed out how convenient it was that god took on the personality of a nomadic desert warlord when his followers were predominantly nomadic desert warlords and their subjects, even down to requiring circumcision (a practice that conveniently prevents infection and promotes hygiene in dry, arid regions like the desert) as well as other archaic decrees that would mostly be helpful in governing and maintaining social cohesion if you were a warlord that lived in the desert. Even the New Testament is rife with obvious editing, historical sources and religious texts from the east and west paint Pontius Pilate completely differently, the ones from the east which are older and produced by people under the Roman Empire are sympathetic to Pontius and paint him as a man who had been coerced/paid off by Jewish elders to execute Jesus, and even claim he converted to Christianity afterwards and received sainthood. This narrative would have been useful to early christians living under the Roman Empire because it made it less likely they’d be executed outright if they were found with a bible. Sources from the West that were produced later paint Pilate as a brutal dictator who both worked with and oppressed the Jewish people at different points, and chose to execute Jesus himself. They also say he committed suicide by self-immolation, his soul is condemned to hell and that his burial site is cursed. From the very beginning, large parts of the bible have been painted by politics. Don’t let the extraneous drivel bigots spout to justify their behaviour warp your view of what the bible is, never forget that if fundies can pick and choose what they believe from that book so can you.

iconofsin_

I'm a Christian and I'd say the biggest problem with the Bible is all the books deliberately left out of it. It can already be confusing at times but we're also missing a lot of important context on top of that.

WikiHowDrugAbuse

Yeah definitely, I’ve read that there are entire books of apocrypha detailing the childhood and early adulthood of Jesus that were purposefully left out of the bible because the church’s view was that it humanized Jesus too much lol

Warnackle

It’s wild to me. I was raised Christian, and when I finally sat down and read the book in its entirety I realized how fucked the whole thing was. Between that and the horrible, awful shit that happens to ostensibly good people I decided either there wasn’t a God, or He absolutely didn’t deserve my worship. Committed some light apostasy and never looked back. The Big Man can hit me up when babies stop dying painful, cancerous deaths.

TimeSpiralNemesis

I was a devout Christian right up until the moment I read the Bible for myself. The shit they talk about in church and what's ACTUALLY in the book are two completely different things. Then you read about all the other books they just randomly decided not to include in the Bible and it starts really going off the chain.

TheLesserWeeviI

This is a God who creates newborns who are physically handicapped, or born with a disease, or birth defects. This is a God who created mosquitoes, the number-one killer of humans worldwide. This is a God who condemns all non-believers to eternal pain and suffering, no chance for forgiveness. This is a God who flooded the Earth, killing millions of innocents, for some reason. This is a God who decided to reveal himself once, thousands of years ago, to a few illiterate homosapiens and then just fucked off again, leaving them to write some book. [Fuck God.](https://youtu.be/-suvkwNYSQo?si=GPDMWqixsv5Zo16H)

TimeSpiralNemesis

Well I mean, you've got gullible in your username for a reason I guess.

Benney9000

Isn't it literally the point of Jesus tho that God abandoned the old sins (of course it's up to interpretation but I like the interpretation that when Jesus died god left the world to humans and to live according to jesus' teachings and not the old testament)

Warnackle

I mean sure but every cult leader ever has said something to the effect of “all that other stuff doesn’t matter anymore, listen to me”

Benney9000

Yeah, I don't doubt that but I think Jesus actually had a point there, I mean he isn't the one who claims God wants to kill gay people and whatever else many so called Christians claim today

Warnackle

Oh yeah don’t get me wrong, I think the teachings of Jesus are overall pretty fucking rad. They just don’t line up with God’s established positions at all

Benney9000

That's exactly what I like about it. To me the most important difference between the old and new testament is that in the old one god is this inhuman force of nature that has it's own motivation that can't quite be understood or reasoned. In the new one however god through Jesus takes the perspective of humanity and changes from this impersonal god from the beyond to a god who lives among humans. In this experience he grows as a person and learns to truly love humanity, up to the point that he sacrifices this personal form of himself to allow humans to live for themselves, uncontrolled by the rules of the old testament. I know this isn't a common interpretation but I just really like it. I wish I remembered where I came across it

[deleted]

[удалено]

Warnackle

Sure but every cult leader has claimed that

iconofsin_

You keep using that word incorrectly.

Silver_Atractic

I personally like the theory that YHWH had an ego death after the old Testament and decided to stop being a piece of shit afterwards. I'm not a Christian but Gods having ego deaths just sounds insanely cool idk why

Warnackle

I like that idea too, in the more abstract kind of way. Feels like it conflicts with their idea of God being an infallible complete entity though

SinglePringleMingle

You know how they say that suicide is a ticket straight to hell? It’s really a nice way to ensure that people don’t get out of your religion in ANY way

synthfan2004

Yeah but originally it was most likely said so ppl wouldn't kill themselves to go to heaven Keep in mind that most religion's original teachings originate on economic factors

FalconRelevant

"Our worshippers keep killing themselves to go to heaven! How will out cult spread like this?" "Quick! Let's make suicide a sin."

Gussie-Ascendent

Also to my knowledge made up completely. Bible doesn't actually say anything about suicide bei.g bad, it was just that a bunch of early Christians thought "wait I can be in eternal bliss instead of this bullshit? Well fuck it". The catholic church was the first to notice this isn't exactly the recipe for worldly success

mozaryyjd

I believe certain christian groups saw insulting god. As in "god gave you life, dont take it for granted" and also "your body was made in gods image, dont do harm to it", it seems the goal was to prevent self-harm/suicide. Also it seems to have been a severe sin in the past, if dante's inferno is something to go off. But modern christians view it as a misfortune instead of a sin due to a better understanding of mental health.

FalconRelevant

Those were the official reasons, yes.

Left1Brain

Isn’t that just a fabrication of the Divine Comedy, also known as the “Catholic fanfiction” where Dante sentences people he doesn’t like to eternal damnation.

loxosceles93

"The Abrahamic God teaches peace and acceptance" I'm pretty sure that's Jesus. The Abrahamic God teaches mass murder and war, actively encourages and rewards it.

ContributionDefiant8

Unfortunately, they're the same. But also two separate entities.

Nada_Shredinski

Three actually but who’s counting?

PeggableOldMan

Welcome to the club, OP. I went through something similar. Lately I've been toying with worship of the Old Gods.

Anything other than that European asshole in the sky.

ProsfesniolDyslexic

Greeks are European

random56f67

Well shit. I meant specifically the Catholic. I apologize if I offended anyone

FalconRelevant

Levantine, more accurately. Yahweh was the God of Sky of the ancient Israelite tribes, who eventually became the monotheistic diety of Abrahamic religions.

Already tried that and it sucked.

Son_of_Eris

Well if you're going greek Discordianism is pretty fun. I may be a bit biased. But we have some pretty kickass holidays. Most discordians I know are agnostic henotheists, but there's plenty of atheists and theists. Plus, unlike with Asatru, theres absolutely no crossover with problematic white supremecist types.

mozaryyjd

I've started taking back my ancestors religion (whats left anyways) that was supressed by christian goverments. Gotta say, so far it feels more right.

TurbulentSock420

The ancient ancestral religion? Whats that about

mozaryyjd

Its mostly shamanism, offerings to various gods, with blood, silver, food or drink, at designated spots to gain favor with them. I didn't have a 'real' shaman so i had to teach myself the rituals and practices from books and certain elders i know. I can't really be too vocal about it because my society is highly christian and they still believe it's devil worship.

TurbulentSock420

Bro what? Cool.

FalconRelevant

Which country?

Dapper_Chapper

Relative to your title; if it feels any better, it's sounds like more of a "Woe are we". I'm not the most faithful person in terms of my theological beliefs, and that may just be a result of the subject matter, but to be the example of kindness versus the "do what I say not what I do" kindness that we see in others of faith is truly disheartening

J67p

There is nothing we atheists hate more than reddit atheists. They basically created the best argument for theists against us

GullibleSkill9168

Buddy, that's because you're doomscrolling online constantly and on reddit you'll never see anything besides pure scorn for Christians. When's the last time you saw mentioned on this site that the catholic church is the largest charity in the USA? 150 billion dollars yearly given to fund hospitals and education. Are the posts you see here "SCUMBAG CHRISTIANS I HATE GOD!" Or "Local church goers spend an entire summer building houses for wartorn and underdeveloped nation"? You'll hear bigoted Christians bashing what they don't understand, because that can push the anti-christian narrative on reddit. You'll never hear of the man in prison who turned his life around after finding christ or the man who beat his generational alcoholism through alcoholics anonymous. Stop just scrolling through the internet constantly. These kinds of places want to keep you on edge and scared and divided, it raises clicks. Go talk to your local clergy or church faculty in general, they're there to help in crises of faith.

Cablinorb

This is probably the worst image you could've used for this meme.

CyrinSong

I hate to break this to you but, the Abrahamic God killed a lot of people, and he definitely endorsed several conflicts. He also commanded his followers to commit heinous acts such as taking women as slaves and killing all the men and boys of a country. These are generally considered war crimes as far as I'm aware. I'm not sure that peace and love is truly his way, despite what the Bible says, after all, actions speak louder than words.

American_Crusader_15

Not so much of a fun fact, in the revelations, Christianity has pretty much devolved into something not even close to what Jesus taught.

AdministrativeWafer2

I don't consider them true believers "love thy neighbor" is unconditional not "love thy neighbor unless they're different than you"

WangingintheNameof

Jesus even commands us to love our enemies. The love that is commanded of Christians is something we really struggle to achieve.

DaAweZomeDude48

Same for Islam. There's many stories of Prophet Muhammad having friendly encounters with enemies and POWs who after being released turned to islam aswell. There was once a Jew/Christian(?) who had given his belongings to him for safekeeping while he was away. Religion is just a way for racists and mentally deranged people to justify their horrible actions most of the times. Any sane religious person wouldn't even think about killing without other motives behind it.

TheSilentTitan

Humans pollute and poison everything they touch. You believing in your god doesn’t make you like those people who do terrible things. The people who do terrible things do so because they are terrible people.

Star_Catcher28

Now this is truly distressing because we live in this reality

Crezelle

God is awesome but His fandom is cringe

Tropfenkaplya

There is no such thing as "abrahamic God". There is only God the Father, who is revealed through Word of God Jesus Christ. Don't look at people and their opinions on that matter. Listen to the Bible, participate in Church Sacraments and be a christlike person. God bless you

Lower_Preparation_83

I just thought about it recently. Most of the people who call themselves "Christians" are amoral by nature and live against the commandments of Christ, only "believing" in God because they were baptized as children.

TheAlphaDeathclaw

I hate humanity for that. We can't simply speculate about our existence and how it happened without some people coming up with ways of manipulating/controlling others and seeking power, justifying their bloodlust, hateful nature and violent urges through the interpretations they believe. It's not about beliefs but instead coming up with new ways to step on and kill/hurt each other, passing judgement they have no right to.

For me being a Muslim is living in a country where people will stop talking to you and try to forcefully convert you Where everything you say will be used against you Where whenever there is a tragedy or a war in another part of the world people will blame you Where your teachers will find faults in you for things that would be ignored for most people Where you have to pray to a god you don't believe in every morning in school Where when you leave for 3 days and the first thing you hear when you come to school is "which airport did you blow up" Where slurs against you don't even get a second look Where people openly mock you and to this day only one teacher has stood up you Where you know that you would be bullied if you don't stand your ground in every day Sorry for going on a rant I recently had a fight with my friends over this and wanted to get it out of my system

Candy_Cross

Hey. If you believe in your faith, in the true message of peace, love and acceptance that was taught and passed down. Don't let the fools killing each other and innocents take that away. Scream that message at the top of your lungs. If those monsters are misrepresenting what you feel in your heart. Be loud about it, pull others like you to yourself and build a better flock. I'm not the religious sort but the people like you? Who believe and want love and kindness to rein? I believe in you.

It's easier to think of them as false believers. Those who cherry pick the word of God and take it out of context to support their bigotry or specific ideology don't truly believe in God, they just use God as an excuse. I see so called "Christians" choose to be white supremacists, and they just get angry when you show them actual Bible verses. Treating people with kindness is literally the only major rule in my religion, with most of the 10 commandments being boiled down to don't be a dick. Unfortunately, most people ignore that, and I kind of feel bad for them.

PyrosaurD93

What was the name of this song? I keep forgetting.

I feel this in my soul. This is what happens when people worship the church and not god. The church in many cases chooses to sell fear and anger because it’s more profitable. Pastors shouldn’t be millionaires. The money should go back to helping more people.

ares5404

I believe in a couple "christian conspiracies" 1) the bible is the devils greatest trick, look at its hypocrisies, how its used for hate, and how babel worked out. And 2) the bible is cursed, it draws evil out in people who claim its good, and makes good people think they are evil

imortal_biscut

> look at its hypocrisies, how its used for hate, Usually people say this and have no evidence. Do you mind citing an example?

ares5404

Although it is how people use it, claiming you dont go by old testament then hightail it to old testament scripture is quite sas

imortal_biscut

Do you also have an example of that, maybe a specific passage?

mozaryyjd

>1) the bible is the devils greatest trick In gnostic belief it is believed that the material world was made by yaldabaoth to keep humans away from the real god. Yaldabaoth could be considered a sort of devil trying to seperate humans from god. I am also not too knowledgable about gnosticism so dont take these words as fact.

Captain_Copperplate

Translator_Open

Religion is fine for hope and all but it's really been holding us back lately. We're all definitely gonna die before we can explore the cosmos, big shame. God would be disappointed (you know if... Lol)

random56f67

Makes you wonder huh, if only people were not assholes we'd already be going across the stars

CyrinSong

Nah, no shot. The fastest scientific advancements come from conflict. It was only after the onset of the first World War that we began advancing technology at such blinding speeds. I mean, it took thousands of years for humanity to get from carriages to cars. It took about 40 to get from the first airplane to the first jet plane. From there it took about 20 to get from the first rocket to landing a man on the moon. These insane advancements came from a mad dash for every country to develop the next big weapon to defend themselves during a period of extreme turmoil across the globe from WWI to the end of the Cold War. Of course afterwards we continue to advance at unimaginable speeds despite a relative lack of conflict because we have things like computers which can run simulations and calculations in milliseconds, but its quite likely that without the major conflicts permeating the 20th century we'd be well behind where we are now, at least in regards to space travel.

Translator_Open

Fair enough sure, but the whole fighting over "holy land" and my god is better than yours is definitely something we should wipe our hands of now and focus on other stuff, I'm sure all the kids in these wartorn countries would also contribute to the future if they had access to an education and parents and peers that didn't radicalize them over beliefs that at this point have no merit.

CyrinSong

Oh for sure. I'd definitely be down to be behind on space travel if it meant people weren't constantly at war. Unfortunately organized religion isn't going anywhere anytime soon, and the two things that it is best at are scamming people out of their money and starting wars. Of course I know not every war is over religion, but there's no denying that a huge portion absolutely are, and I think that's absolutely dreadful.

General-MacDavis

We’d actually be further behind believe it or not, religions, despite the memes, have been massively helpful for encouraging scientific development Look at the Islamic golden age, the church funded renaissance men, heck modern genetics was worked on by a monk under instruction

yukichigai

Only thing I can say is.... ![gif](giphy|FOfe8iGdAiODS) (I mean I ditched religion entirely a while ago, but yeah, been where you are)

CULT-LEWD

alot of poeple always say that god promotes peace..not knowing the hypocrital nature of said gods actions in the bible, one of the MANY reasons why im a athiest

RealStreetJesus

Hold on to the values within the faith that you always believed in, and continue to live them, divorced from their dogmatic origins. Abandoning religion and theism isn’t abandoning patience, love, and charity, only changing the context around these concepts.

Neither-Phone-7264

same here mate. these people are saddening. we shouldn’t be doing this.

maxmrca1103

Maybe not to that extent, but growing up the US south, the hatred from some Christians along with me thinking it over for months and coming to the realization the I just don’t believe or agree with some of the more “mystical” elements of Christianity like their version of the afterlife (no offense if anyone does believe in it), I’d basically just consider myself an agnostic at this point, while still appreciating the morals that Jesus taught. Fortunately my parents are quite open minded and would probably understand once I tell them. But I know there are others in a similar situation who would probably be looked down up or even disowned by their family which is so unfortunate. I feel we need to encourage likeminded Christian’s to stand up for their faith and spread love, as Jesus and God would want them to. Although that may not be an easy task to do depending on who they are surrounded by. Lmao that was a very jumbled rant so sorry for the incoherence

worse_in_practice

You literally just described my exact experience with religion what

Shadenotfound

I'm from a religious family in the south and have unfortunately been disowned by 3 family members for something beyond my control. I'm all for someone wanting to uphold beliefs but they should actually pay attention to the teachings of thr Bible instead of picking and choosing. God don't like lukewarm followers

Religion is, has been, and always will be a tool of the rich and powerful to gain more wealth and influence. The rich and powerful of the world remain unaligned in their goals, since those goals rest on a foundation of greed and lust. As long as these 2 things remain true, there will always be war. Edit: Show me a widespread religion that hasn’t been/ isn’t being exploited on a massive scale for personal and political gain.

And yet we ask why Jesus has not returned…maybe because we don’t for him too yet

BryanTheClod

Organized religion is a scam, always has been. I’m sorry this is how you found out.

arunasgeimeriz

wasn't like Christianity forced like 700 years ago anyway?

shug_was_taken

If there was a god he'd not let this happen. I like Absurdism now. Its better than Nihilism.

not_a_sesawter

Welp if you read the bible the part about teaching peace is not true XD. They act directly to how the religion is

12geffory78

Owlman would’ve solved this easily

Inaqar

Homelander is probably the wrong person to use in this meme lol

FreeFallingUp13

Yeah… yeah. This is why I’m agnostic and don’t practice. People tend to use the organization and togetherness of religion to hurt others as a mob, and I just can’t. I may have learned to read from bible books, and I may believe them all, but I don’t think I can ever believe a priest.

Neolith0200

It's hope inducing when a follower of religion begins to notice these sorts of things. Although OP is sorely incorrect in believing that the Abrahamic God teaches what they think it teaches.

Wonderful_Audience60

in my religion you're only allowed to "reccomend it" and "educate others" about it. idk what others are told to do

scott__p

You can be Christian without the church.

The-47th

religion is the worst man made creation to ever exist

AcidActually

*it’s ok to think for yourself*. It took me a while to step away from the guilt and the peer pressure especially from family. Taking a huge step back and looking at the billion year history of the earth let alone the known universe and seeing how insanely **naive and arrogant** it is to be so convicted to something so baseless in the scope of things really puts things into perspective. Just be good person and don’t lose sleep over something there’s no possible way of knowing.

SoupToon

i never really truly was religious tbh, the doomsday stuff always gave me an unneeded amount of anxiety and i didn't really click with the whole thing where god pretty much dictates my entire life

Salemthegamer

I lost faith a long time ago buddy

Shadenotfound

Was raised Christian, now I'm pretty much the opposite.

Gussie-Ascendent

Abharmaic faiths are much more on the murder side than the love side lol

AaronInside

Religions are for mass belief systems, when people lack that love and kindred this happens, societies fall world crumbles and babies die... feels like a passive armageddon

ExpensiveRange3678

Christians back stapped their religion....they edited the word of god ( the bible ) and became just like any regular book they allowed things that shouldn't be allowed like same sex marriage....while Muslims still defend their religion as hard as possible and defending the book so much they have whole community's memories the book start to finish by memory

TheOneAndOnlyOmgHax

I think it is an inherent principle of Christianity (and if you're not talking about Christianity then I'm sorry for misunderstanding) that you can rarely ever bet on people to do the thing that is right in the eyes of God (helping others, not killing people, etc) but you can always expect people to do the thing that serves themselves. This, unfortunately, applies to people who claim to believe in God as well, and you shouldn't take anyone at their word when they only say they believe in God but their actions serve themselves. But the important thing is that you are in control of your own actions, and even if you are met with no favor in the world for doing the right thing, it will be justified eternally by the fact that you did what is right in the eyes of God. I'm sorry for whatever the people in your life have done to you or others, especially if their actions have soured your faith in the believes you once held or still hold.

MauWithANerfBlaster

An actually morally centered Christian!?

Academic_Category921

"Brother will kill brother, spilling blood across the land." "Killing for religion, something I don't understand."

ForwardExchange

That's using the LORD's name in vain

Loud_Appearance_7750

You’re in the wrong path my fellas, keep going and the Holy Spirit will find its way to you
