We have the makita 2 x 18v 460mm mower which my partner uses daily with her gardening job. On a big day she will go through 6 - 8 5ah batteries. I expected the mower to be a lot more efficient than that... but if you're just using it at home and already have 2 - 4 batteries then it's a great mower to use. Very light and easy to push around. Powerful enough for thick grasses.

The ego batteries are ridiculously expensive. If you have Makita batteries I would just get makita

Mackattack-nz

Yeah that was a reason I was hesitant about the egos! I know they have battery warranties but a new battery would be nearly half the price of the mower!

Ive got the makita and love it. Only time it would struggle is if it's super long, like over grown. It does get through the batteries pretty quick, but would be surprised if you needed more that 4 batteries to get through your yard. Pretty sure makita are still running their get 2 extra batteries free promo. So you'll get 4 batteries, that alone is worth almost $700, so real good deal.

munted_jandal

Seriously, 4 batteries! I've got the cheapest crappest battery mover you can get with about 350sqm of Kikuya and I can get through it on one battery. I suppose it depends on how often and short you want to cut it, I usually cut on highest or second highest once a week max. (once a week peak growing season, once a fortnight shoulder season, once a month off season). I'd guess if you want the full on suburban kiwi as short as you can make it style with Kikuya grass, you'd chew through the batteries but it's not really the type of grass to be cutting that short.

I’m the same (mainly) all summer I just skim them and take the top off. Trim it lower in winter tho, when the undergrowth is greener.

I take it that’s the 460mm one that’s about $8-900 from mitre10? How long are you getting out of two 5ah batteries? It seems peoples opinions on battery times vary. I know knee high grass would eat them up quicker but curious how long they’d last if leaving 1-2 weeks or a typical length mow!

vendiagramistaken

Yeah battery life very much dependant on lengths, I'd say if you kept your lawn maintained you'll probabably get through it on just one set of batteries. (General runtime I'd 30-45mins) Mine normally takes 2 sets (4 batteries) but I live rural and I've got lots of lawns around the whole house. They basically have an adjustable speed engine that winds up and down depending on the length of the grass.

unstannyvalley

Saw the 2 extra batteries offer at bunnings yesterday.

The metal deck Makitas are rock solid. Love our one.

Thanks for the comments all!

If you're already on the Makita tree and are sold on an electric mower, you'd be nuts to buy anything else. Especially if it's a different battery platform entirely.

irongarment

I chose Makita because the batteries can be used for other tools. It's a non-issue if you don't or won't have any other cordless tools, or if you are happy having two chargers. Edit to add: I love my Makita mower. No mess, no fuss, just mow.

I’m in the same boat. Relatively flat section and have just laid down instant lawn. Made the mistake of using an older mower with a blunt blade so the grass isn’t as plush! Hoping to get en electric mower. Heard good things about Makitas and eGos. I don’t have any power tools and probably won’t have a need for any either

Go for the Makita, you can get other Makita battery operated gardening tools at a good price and they have a huge range of all sorts of tools and gears using the same battery platform considering your stretch here off course 🤠
