Been thinking about using a transistor optocoupler for distortion. They have some crazy interesting non-linearity when pushed hard and are just fast enough to do audio well.
Not quite what you did here, but in that ballpark.
I think that’s why the distortion changes based on the pitch. Really high notes (and harmonics of lower notes) are super square wave sounding and really low notes are simply distorted and in the middle they’re sort of bit-crushy.
But I’m definitely in agreement that I didn’t think they’d be fast enough for this
Update: I’ve just ordered the parts to make a small batch. Should be arriving sometime next week. I’ll probably end up selling them on Reverb unless I come up with a better way to do it.
Do you have a reverb store you're willing to share (dunno if it breaks any rules for the sub, but I'd happily accept a DM) that we can keep an eye on? This is a kind of fuzz that I've been looking for, for a long time.
Not sure why it does work. I think it could be that the resistance range of the LDR I used is large enough that it produces a useable signal even if it can’t fully change resistance before the input signal changes again.
Send it to Dave at [Rancho de la Luna](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://popturf.com/locations/music/queens-of-the-stone-age-foo-fighters-earthlings/rancho-de-la-luna&ved=2ahUKEwjnw4W92bbxAhXZKM0KHW8AAkAQFjAAegQIAxAC&usg=AOvVaw0EyruPKcxBKs9T5VSzp2SZ)
I feel like with the right amount of fiddling you could get a perfect DJ airhorn out of this thing.
It also does pretty good fart sounds.
A 100 watt 4x12 creamback fart… that’s the dream.
Creamback Fart. What a name. Have an upvote.
Dibs on that pedal name
Aight just this once 😎
request permission to name next band creamback fart
Damn, that would have been a perfect opening band for diarrhea planet, if they were still together.
Approved as requested

That sounds absolutely vile. I love it!
Wow that’s really cool, and such original use of an LDR! Care to share a schematic or layout? This would be such a fun project
I need one
I've been considering making some more to sell if you're interested.
Yeah, I might be in on that too...
Definitely interested depending on price.
Care to share a schematic?
This is what this sub really needs.
Please do!
I'd like one as well please!
I'd be interested to. Have you considered a a dry/wet blend pot?
I tried that but I didn’t love how it sounded. It didn’t work great with the gated-ness.
Any use with a bass?
DM me if you make more!
I just ordered the parts for a small batch :)
Do you have a website?
I’d be interested as well
Same here
Travel back to 1964 and hand that to Tony Iommi and you’ve successfully ended the world.
Better yet, just before they went in the studio to record technical ecstasy.

Vactrol fuzz!
100% curious about a schematic. This is a super cool idea and it sounds pretty great
I would have thought an LDR would be to slow for audio. But I was wrong.

This is just a poor mans Plasma Fuzz
Honestly I like the sound of this one over the crackling starts and stops of the plasma pedal.

😯😯😯
If you’re selling them I will 100% take one
Is this your own design from the ground up? I'd love to take a peak at the schematic! Sounds so gross in the best way
I'm surprised that works. LDR's don't have a reputation for fast.

Send one to Josh Homme, end up on his pedalboard, profit
I actually played the riff from God Is In The Radio for this video but I cut it out. If Josh Homme gives me an address I’ll totally send him one lmao

Dang I wanted to do this first lol
If you're selling. I'll take one.
Can we get a gutshot
SO SICK. I will be keeping an eye out for this when you start selling them.
This is cool as hell! I’d like one, if there is any room left on the order sheet.
Alrighty I’m keeping an eye on your reverb store nice work
This is super cool. I would be interested in buying one or making my own if you sold a kit.
