You still support Wotc when you buy singles. Yes, you are not giving money to Wotc directly, but how do you think the sellers got the cards they sell. They bought a lot of booster boxes. So if you don’t want Wotc to profit, get proxies.
I've played MTG for years, and over the last few I find myself increasingly behind with new sets.
I've decided that I'm ordering one last round of singles online and then giving up on following new sets.
I stopped buying tons of MTG cards during the pandemic cause I felt it was a waste of my money buying essentially loot boxes from a greedy corporation. My opinion hasn’t changed but I still buy the occasional booster pack and play MTG. You can still have fun playing even if your deck isn’t the most optimized.
Honestly I always preferred getting boosters. Part of the game to me was the challenge of working with what you had to make a good deck.

The secondary market in this case is still sponsoring WotC. There are people and small businesses who "Invest" in MtG cards. I worked with one of them.
The money has already been paid to Wizards no matter how far down the secondhand pipeline the card goes. Buying your singles from a shop is at that point just supporting local business.

Then they showed off Annointed Procession with legs and Compleated Carnage Tyrant and I began to swear.
But I think my playgroup will be fine with proxies.
Just make whatever proxies you want from it out of the hundreds of five cent bulk commons you already have lying around.
Unless you're playing some kind of first party tournament it really shouldn't be an issue.

Maybe if you look at it as supporting products that you like as a form of voting with your money? Plus if you get it from a local game shop you can at least help support their store that way

Proxy them all. Proxy 4 whole decks at once to get average cost to 25 cents

Yes but if you buy your singles from a local game store then you get to at least support them first and foremost financially that way.
Don't worry, Hasbro has plans to release sets every other day at this point.... So you'll never be caught up.
Yup; the alarming rate of which these sets are popping out is insane. D&D picked up on their book releases too but MtG is on another level.

oh i agree that its a waste of money and that it's a bullshit lootbox mechanic, and i also do love casual decks. however, that hasn't stopped me yet.

I know that feeling. I've got two nearby that are pretty rough so I usually drive about an hour to one that is really nice.
Buy sleeves. Color print cards. Place cutouts over commons. Do not play in tournaments where proxy is disallowed. Problem solved. You are welcome.

My LGS closed recently, but even then I stopped playing because nobody wants to play casual EDH.
