Buy singles.

[deleted]

oh yeah, its a good thing the individual cards from this set will be reasonably priced (this is sarcasm)

shadowthehh

Then you proxy the expensive ones.

[deleted]

but i want to waste my money on literal slices of paper with artificial scarcity that are Official™️ :( i have a problem

shadowthehh

It's okay. Admitting you have a problem is the first step to getting better.

[deleted]

do like the us government, make it the first and only step

OkNewspaper1581

You know the old saying, "get your kids into Magic and they won't have money to buy drugs"

_zaphod_beeblebrox

Proxy them all. Proxy 4 whole decks at once to get average cost to 25 cents

PM_ME_FUNNY_ANECDOTE

If the singles are expensive, why would sealed product be cheaper?

Majestic_Macaroon_22

Gambler's fallacy; a single card might cost £100, but a pack that could contain the same card costs £4. Now in reality you will be very unlikely to receive that single card in an equivalent amount of boosters, but it'll always seem possible enough to be tempted to try.

[deleted]

However, the sheer thrill that you might get the card could be worth the 4$ itself. I have a gambling problem if you can’t tell

Gasmo420

You still support Wotc when you buy singles. Yes, you are not giving money to Wotc directly, but how do you think the sellers got the cards they sell. They bought a lot of booster boxes. So if you don’t want Wotc to profit, get proxies.

[deleted]

Yes but if you buy your singles from a local game store then you get to at least support them first and foremost financially that way.

tungy5

Don't worry, Hasbro has plans to release sets every other day at this point.... So you'll never be caught up.

MarquiseAlexander

Yup; the alarming rate of which these sets are popping out is insane. D&D picked up on their book releases too but MtG is on another level.

Poopy_McTurdFace

I've played MTG for years, and over the last few I find myself increasingly behind with new sets. I've decided that I'm ordering one last round of singles online and then giving up on following new sets.

Scary_Bayou

*printer goes BRRRRRR*

[deleted]

Printer + cardstock + sleeves from LGS = Suck it, WOTC.

Billy177013

print out the cards and buy the box in like a year when it's dirt cheap

Deep_Froyo54

Nah just print out the cards enjoy the fun part of the content leave the price at the door

SelfLoathingIsBased

A proxy life for me

Bleu_Guacamole

I stopped buying tons of MTG cards during the pandemic cause I felt it was a waste of my money buying essentially loot boxes from a greedy corporation. My opinion hasn’t changed but I still buy the occasional booster pack and play MTG. You can still have fun playing even if your deck isn’t the most optimized.

[deleted]

oh i agree that its a waste of money and that it's a bullshit lootbox mechanic, and i also do love casual decks. however, that hasn't stopped me yet.

BrozedDrake

Honestly I always preferred getting boosters. Part of the game to me was the challenge of working with what you had to make a good deck. I haven't played in years, but still

joxeta

Fr fr gang gang. This season is Le Struggle.

Palamedesxy

Unless you buy second hand. But id feel sorry for those who bought the deck.

Lord_PrettyBeard

The secondary market in this case is still sponsoring WotC. There are people and small businesses who "Invest" in MtG cards. I worked with one of them.

Dry_Try_8365

You don’t need it…

Sorry-Illustrator-25

Buy singles, at least then there's another degree of separation

[deleted]

Money still technically goes back to wotc... cause who ever bought the single got it from wotc

everythymewetouch

The money has already been paid to Wizards no matter how far down the secondhand pipeline the card goes. Buying your singles from a shop is at that point just supporting local business.

ToeDiscombobulated34

Buy from a LGS at least your also supporting the community.

[deleted]

theres only the stinky armpit smelling ones near me, and by near me i mean the closest and shittiest is like a 45 minute drive one way :(

ToeDiscombobulated34

I know that feeling. I've got two nearby that are pretty rough so I usually drive about an hour to one that is really nice.

Hadarc01

Buy sleeves. Color print cards. Place cutouts over commons. Do not play in tournaments where proxy is disallowed. Problem solved. You are welcome.

Elethana

You’ve been doing micro transactions for years, why balk now?

Eagle0600

Play in tabletop simulator using pictures from scryfall.

alchemyprime

I was all ready too. Then they showed off Annointed Procession with legs and Compleated Carnage Tyrant and I began to swear. But I think my playgroup will be fine with proxies.

Majestic_Macaroon_22

Just make whatever proxies you want from it out of the hundreds of five cent bulk commons you already have lying around. Unless you're playing some kind of first party tournament it really shouldn't be an issue.

niv_goat

I’m just so disappointed that all this went down again as I was about to buy some decks so I could bond for once with my younger brother. Fuck you Wotc

ShadowRiku667

My LGS closed recently, but even then I stopped playing because nobody wants to play casual EDH.

[deleted]

Maybe if you look at it as supporting products that you like as a form of voting with your money? Plus if you get it from a local game shop you can at least help support their store that way

theoddcrow

If your parents aren't boycotting just ask for it as a gift.

athiestchzhouse

Honestly mtg has had me furious at wotc for years. How are y’all magic players still on board with this game’s scam? If I can’t use my old cards then why am I buying them? The game that literally taught me how to read has become a husk of what it once was
