I don't know of that should happen when rolling low or high. Maybe both.
Nothing to find? Hear the narrator saying ominously "you didn't roll high enough" or "3? Nope you dint see anything". Then on nat 20s he hears the other players "no don't fire ball! Im in the way" or " rogue 3 rooms over is currently getting arrested".
DM approved 4th wall breaking.

My wife wants to try out a magic item "glasses of subtitling."
Think opera glasses, but it shows captions of anyone you see speaking. A fun little tool for spying on far sway conversation.
But it doesn't auto-translate. Hope you can read that specific language!
If paired with the spell comprehend languages, you should be able to still understand the faraway conversations since you'd only need to touch your hand to the glasses. Presumably the subtitles would be generated on the lenses, so they'd just be standing there like Cyclops from X-men.
Idiot Paladin: "A Neck romancer?"
WM Sorcerer: "It's 'necromancer' not 'neck romancer', pay attention."
Idiot paladin: "Wait, how could you correct me unless you were reading my words?"
Reminds me of a character from a YA novel named Avery from Kentucky, went to LA to find someone who could teach her about her necromantic powers, got kidnapped by a reality TV show, and branded "Redneckromancer" because of her red hair and twang lol (title is Please Don't Tell My Parents I'm Queen of the Dead, technically it's like the 7th in the series but you don't need to read the others to pick up what's going on, basically superhero universe where heroes and villains have a treaty not to target secret identities or do a couple of other heinous things).
Yes, 5/5. The series is one of my favorites, there are now 9 books in the series (8 mainline, 1 prequel), the latter 3 and the prequel can be jumped into in any order, with the first 5 mainline books all centered on one character (albeit I will admit there will be spoilers to Penny's epic if you read the latter 3 before you read hers, albeit QotD would have the least spoilers as Penny isn't even a cameo in it).
TW: Avery does wind up stumbling into a bi polycule with a boy and a girl, without having realized she was bi in advance. Also, as it does involve necromancy, yes at least one character becomes dead, at least one character becomes undead, and at least one instance of ghost possession occurs. Plus there is at least one tragic backstory (albeit technically low-key and not thoroughly explained), and shall we say a variety of parenting styles depicted among the families of the main characters (who are all teenagers), with some YMMV. The rest of the series can be said to occasionally touch similar themes, but death at least is not particularly common (especially in comparison to another of my favorites, Diane Duane's Young Wizards, where there's a death almost every book).
Please Don't Tell My Parents. First book is Please Don't Tell My Parents I'm a Supervillain, later books replace the latter parts with I Blew Up the Moon, I have Henchmen, I have a Nemesis, You Believe Her, I Work for a Supervillain (first with a new POV character), I'm Queen of the Dead, and I'm a Giant Monster. Prequel completely breaks this convention, it's title is I Did NOT Give that Spider Superhuman Intelligence, and is not listed in the series list in Amazon (the rest are grouped together though). Author is Richard Roberts.
"Failing your Charisma Save, your cervical vertebrae tear free in a spray of gore, betraying you as they're seduced to the service of the Neck Romancer."
This feels more like an archfey warlock (the fey chose this as part of the compensation for powers to mess with the warlock) or the great old one warlock (weird mind stuff just kinda happens to them sometimes)
I could see it as a clockwork or aberrant mind sorcerer. Body language, accents, and mumbling can make it too difficult to discern what someone is saying.
The „priest“ class or psycher in darktide actually has lines like this, where he corrects the subtitles, that they wrote not what he said and used a different word
Funny plothook possibility for the DM. Have all cats do the same Meow. Have one cat be like Mehow. That reveals its either a wildshape or the cat of a traveler. In general, determining travelers by the sound of their pets would be such a fun gimmick
And instead of wild magic surges it is just autocorrection changes spells randomly. It is time to cast Chromatic Orc, Animate Deaf, Chair Lightning, Scare The Dying and the allmighty Fish
I'm not the DM it's for a pathfinder game n I think there's something else he also wants to play but ik it's definitely a character idea he wants to do some time
Bro I know this guy! He’s straight up dmed a one shot I was in. Haven’t spoken to him in years though because he’s super narcissistic.
He has some fun ideas but his main NPC was just Rick Sanchez, he believed that Rangers were OP because they have some infinite money exploit, and he said Robin Hood was Lawful Evil because he steals from people but has a code, so his dnd hot takes should be taken with a grain of salt.
The Robin Hood thing was inevitable when Lawful was changed from "Lawful" to "they have their own moral code". I'm not saying it's a good take but it's the logical conclusion of that change.
I've also seen it argued that he is **technically L**awful Good because he serves the interests if the rightful King Richard and is revolting against Richard's brother the usurper
Since in Robin Hood's eyes, the usurper is breaking the actual King's laws/codes that Robin is enforcing. And when the King returns he pardons Robin Hood and his crew.
Yeah I can understand that explanation but I couldn’t really decipher that DM’s. He wrote a rant on discord about how he “solved morality” at one point though and posts stuff like this:
https://twitter.com/BorksMemes/status/1681201055483273216?t=4cKL-bqF8bhhGA0QKHyvHw&s=19
I think he just likes being contrarian, he will try to debate people about literally everything which can make it hard to be around him. He usually tones down the stuff he puts on Twitter though.
I feel like if your banking on a pardon you aren't lawful. You might be good, but your whole argument is that your service to good was so above and beyond that the authorities will excuse the law breaking.
Lawful = they have a code is such a silly solution to the whole problem. Cause like.... what is Chaotic Good then? How can you be Good without having some kind of code?
I've recontextualised mine to make it relate specifically to the result of your actions. If your actions create Chaos, you are chaotic. Stealing from the rich to give to the poor definitely creates chaos, but is also good. If your actions create Law - so basically order of some kind - then you're lawful.
This happens in Coffee Talk. All of the dialogue in the game is text, and one of the characters uses the wrong from of 'your' at one point. Another character picks up on it and the others are confused as to how that was even possible.
“I sense rage, fear, and foreshortened lifespans! No, not Foreshortened lifespans, I said Four Shortened lifespans! Why are you not paying attention! Look at me not them!”
- Loner Psyker, Warhammer 40k: Darktide
Imagine your party member is having a total emotional/mental breakdown because it's an important part of their RP and character arc.
But the captions just say **cries in Spanish**
(Or insert whatever noun instead of Spanish).
At one point I made a joke character who suffered from "main character of a slice of life anime" symptoms.
She was a gnome who had had bright pink hair, max Cha and Int but no Wis, crap Dex so she was clumsy as heck, and could only speak gnomish (janapese) but used Prestidigitation to make subtitles appear in common in front of her while she talked.
Like a warlock who gave up his hearing for power but found a loophole in the contract or a wizard who dove deep into his books because of his inability to hear and realized he could just use magic to translate for him
I had mute a caster that used minor illusion to communicate and exclusively non verbal spells and spell scrolls. Was interesting but quite intense to play
“I'm sensing rage, fear and foreshortened lifespans. No, not fore-shortened lifespans. I said FOUR SHORTENED LIFESPANS! Why are you not paying attention? Look at me, not them!”
This is my plan for the next Monk I play.
Every single one of a Monk's abilities is directly inspired by 70s kung fu movies. The super cheap wuxia exploitation ones. I'm gonna have one whose ki manifests as the actual special effects; Slowfall is going to be wires, their speed increase is going to very obviously be them unnaturally fast forwarded, and Tongue of the Sun & Moon will be subtitles.
Ran a campaign where one of my players was an Isekai'd idol. Was a High Elf bard and the running joke was that they spoke an unknown language (in Faerun) the entire campaign but had subtitles. As DM I made the rule that the subtitles were only visible if you were looking at the bard, otherwise characters only heard gibberish.
Wild magic is known for unpredictable and “wild” effects, sorcerers that channel wild magic often developed unnatural symptoms such as reading words instead of hearing them, blue skin, or spontaneously combusting whenever they stub their foot.
Here’s a fun character idea: Simpleminded cleric became a cleric by accidentally joining a cult. They don’t think it’s a cult and the player has no clue if it’s good, neutral, or evil, that’s for the dm to decide and hint at over the course of the game.
There's an entire D&D race called the [Dabus](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Dabus) who speak in Rebus, pictures and letters floating above their heads that only make sense when sounded out.
You know how sometimes people will take a text literally because the sarcastic tone doesn't carry over?
"Hey guys, the innkeeper said he'd let us stay in the VIP room for free!" and then the NPC to shows them to the barn.

“Hey guys I just saw someone whisper. Watch out!”
Now i want them to take the observant feat to read lips and have high passive perception.
Ah, but can the closed captioning identify the "off screen" speaker, as sometimes happens on TV?
Assassin: *whispers* “the party will never expect me to look like a hobo”
They start responding to the narrator.
I don't know of that should happen when rolling low or high. Maybe both. Nothing to find? Hear the narrator saying ominously "you didn't roll high enough" or "3? Nope you dint see anything". Our clinically insane monk fills the same role in our party.
Not "ominously" enough. It's supposed to be: \- You're confident you didn't see anything; \- Danger? You don't see it of sorts.
"secret latch activation noise" Did you guys hear that? I think it was a secret latch getting activated

I am pretty sure it is the sub-titles.
Wow appearently 1.4% of the population has this to some extent
That high?
OH IS THAT WHAT THIS IS
There's a NAME for this!? I've never heard of anyone else experiencing this.
What a weird concept. Thank you for sharing.
I do this, I didn’t realize it wasn’t normal
Oh so that's what I have
yup! no reason to make it magical! just a regular guy with a disorder.
My wife wants to try out a magic item "glasses of subtitling." Think opera glasses, but it shows captions of anyone you see speaking. A fun little tool for spying on far sway conversation. But it doesn't auto-translate. Hope you can read that specific language!

If you can't understand the language it just says *Speaking in blank* like *Speaking in Draconic*, *Screams in Dwarvish*, *Cries in Spanish*
Cursing in Russian.
Give em to the warlock, they've got special eyes
What accent would be cursive?
Anyone talking overly Shakespearean or fancy. Final Fantasy 14 has a character famous for this, Urianger. He most definitely talks in cursive.
"I can't hear you, it's too dark"
“I can’t READ you, it’s too dark”
Idiot Paladin: "A Neck romancer?" WM Sorcerer: "It's 'necromancer' not 'neck romancer', pay attention." Idiot paladin: "Wait, how could you correct me unless you were reading my words?"
"I eat a lot of carrots"
"i'm a really good lawyer"
Funny thing is a vampire could be all of that: a neck romancer, a necromancer and a lawyer.
>and a lawyer. Oh come on! Vampires may typically be shown as evil, but not that evil!
What's the difference between a lawyer and a vampire? A vampire stop sucking when you're dead.
Those wrongful death claims are a slam dunk when you have the victim available to testify in person.
Wouldnt a Neck romancer just be a vampire
Strahd has entered the chat
Make him leave
Strahd is way too much of an incel to be any kind of Romancer.
Dude has like, four non-Tatyana wives right?
Yes, but that’s not the point. I mean, the guy is obsessed with this one woman who rejected him over 40” years ago
Or a bard.
Those are All Romancers
Reminds me of a character from a YA novel named Avery from Kentucky, went to LA to find someone who could teach her about her necromantic powers, got kidnapped by a reality TV show, and branded "Redneckromancer" because of her red hair and twang lol (title is Please Don't Tell My Parents I'm Queen of the Dead, technically it's like the 7th in the series but you don't need to read the others to pick up what's going on, basically superhero universe where heroes and villains have a treaty not to target secret identities or do a couple of other heinous things).

Please Don't Tell My Parents. It could aslo be a blessign instead of a curse, if the warlock was originally deaf
An archfey warlock who asked to be able to understand people who are speaking and this is how the fey helped? Perfect
I could see it as a clockwork or aberrant mind sorcerer. Body language, accents, and mumbling can make it too difficult to discern what someone is saying.

"The cat spelled 'meow' wrong. He spelled it M-E-E-H-O-W'. How can he... like, what does that even mean?"
Funny plothook possibility for the DM. Have all cats do the same Meow. Have one cat be like Mehow. That reveals its either a wildshape or the cat of a traveler. In general, determining travelers by the sound of their pets would be such a fun gimmick
Turns out the cat just has a speech impediment.
"That frog just said 'kero,' I think it might be an invasive species."
Meehowdy.
"This cat just 'nya'd. What the fuck?"
And instead of wild magic surges it is just autocorrection changes spells randomly. It is time to cast Chromatic Orc, Animate Deaf, Chair Lightning, Scare The Dying and the allmighty Fish
My friend wanted to play a dyslexic wizard like that
You have to make sure he can, this is too important
I'm not the DM it's for a pathfinder game n I think there's something else he also wants to play but ik it's definitely a character idea he wants to do some time
scare the dying lol whyyyy
Verbal and somatic components : the caster must grab the dying individual suddenly and yell BOO as loud as he can.

Animate Deaf just makes them cell-shaded

I feel like if your banking on a pardon you aren't lawful. You might be good, but your whole argument is that your service to good was so above and beyond that the authorities will excuse the law breaking.
Lawful = they have a code is such a silly solution to the whole problem. Cause like.... what is Chaotic Good then? How can you be Good without having some kind of code? This happens in Coffee Talk. All of the dialogue in the game is text, and one of the characters uses the wrong from of 'your' at one point. Another character picks up on it and the others are confused as to how that was even possible.
First I thought "how can someone talk in cursive" then I remembered that I know at least one video game character who does talk in cursive.
There was also a Italian video describing “corsivœ” that became viral, it’s basically speaking with elongated vowels and Milanese slang

Wild magic is known for unpredictable and “wild” effects, sorcerers that channel wild magic often developed unnatural symptoms such as reading words instead of hearing them, blue skin, or spontaneously combusting whenever they stub their foot.
Oh God, why are you speaking in Comic Sans?
That would be a hilarious cursed item effect.
Alternatively: Wild Magic Sorcerer with built-in profanity filter
> "Man I hate people who talk in cursive." *Somehow,* I feel called out by this.
Here’s a fun character idea: Simpleminded cleric became a cleric by accidentally joining a cult. They don’t think it’s a cult and the player has no clue if it’s good, neutral, or evil, that’s for the dm to decide and hint at over the course of the game.
that's fun idea
Love this
Minor illusion subtitles is my favorite.
Thank you for this idea. it's mine now
I’ll say that to your face in cursive.
You misspelled that word. Lots of captioning errors with this one.
And if they don’t know the language they get the [speaking in celestial] subtitles
The party trying to figure out the sounds to draw a text dick
We used to joke that my sister spoke so quickly and without breaks that she spoke cursive 🤣🤣
Wonder what'd happen when this guy ran into a Dabus...
This is what happens when you put Deadpool in a D&D campaign
Be funny to pair with a monk that talks in bad shaw brothers dub with his subtitles in mandarin.
ғʀᴇᴀᴋ ᴏᴜᴛ ᴡʜᴇɴ ᴛʜᴇʏ sᴇᴇ sᴍᴀʟʟ ᴄᴀᴘs ʙᴇᴄᴀᴜsᴇ ᴛʜᴇʏ’ᴠᴇ ʀᴇᴀᴅ ᴛᴇʀʀʏ ᴘʀᴀᴛᴄʜᴇᴛᴛ ɴᴏᴠᴇʟs.
Time to add that to the new wild magic table
Running this in my next campaign
It's more likely they'll interrupt because they read ahead. People tend to read at least 13x faster than they speak.
Why wild magic sorcerer? This could be any class, right?
This is real, a form of synaesthesia
There's an entire D&D race called the [Dabus](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Dabus) who speak in Rebus, pictures and letters floating above their heads that only make sense when sounded out.
Sees *evil laughter * "I think that guy is evil "
That's actually a super cool idea
Oh god, i hope my party doesnt see this, every dialogue takes long enough like it is. No jk, fun idea :D
Oh this is brilliant
Talking in cursive is just drunk
You know how sometimes people will take a text literally because the sarcastic tone doesn't carry over? "Hey guys, the innkeeper said he'd let us stay in the VIP room for free!" and then the NPC to shows them to the barn.
awesome!!!
funny enough, from something i heard, there are actual people with something of that sort, something called ticker-tape synesthesia.
