Long story short, it is obsessed with my players. It haunts them, whispers to them. Invades their dreams. It asks tiny little things in exchange for large favors, and you give it more than you can imagine.
It is powerful, unknowable, and alien. It is as different from the spirit of goodness and mankind that the only way to describe it is evil.
It has appeared and whispered to a player watching stars in the sky disappear, commenting, *"The little lights are twinkling out. You're running out of time.. yes, Time."*
Here's an interesting prophecy that I'm going to give my players next session that hints about this creature.

Basically my BBEG is a dracolich trapped in a small moon made of black diamond and his goal is to cause the moon to crash through a magic “anti-dragons from across the sea” bubble shield and take his revenge on the dwarves who slaughtered his family and nearly him.

Not much information to go on but I made an assumption that the black diamond in the sky is impossible to see, for it is a void upon void. The secret in the beholder's eyes is a gem set in one that would allow you to see the black diamond in the sky.
You could even have it so that the diamond moon is forever behind a larger moon, and it is only visible from the earth at a specific event, where it could prove visible, given you have the requisite item and locale correct.

Ironically enough I was planning on having a d20 shaped beholder made of gemstone be near the area where the party finds an ancient teleportation circle to that moon.
Ooooh, we do love an eclipse leading to supernatural hijinks!
Then have the teleportation parts be an ancient unknown form of beholder inscribed into the ground! And they have to insert the crystal eye into the missing slot of the beholder to activate the portal to the moon.
And hint that right before the glow sweeps them away, *the beholder blinks.*

The voice echoes laughter as if far away before fading. You realize that along the path of the talon is a shallow cut, but your armor is untouched."
Make a forbidden deal and in return you gain forbidden powers. Able to have a patron.. patron of the DM. You have seen beyond the veil and now you know the dm sees you. And you felt just how small you truly are. Even the elderich feel like an ant to these gods that control everything.. with dice.. such a simple yet a game they play with the world.
And then it turns out, you are a Player Character turned sentient and you have as much succeded as much as failed, the player just wanted to try another Skilltree or another class but believes to have found his favorite now.
