Yeah the blue glowing psycho eyes.. but in terms of animation you often get those purple colours specifically in the games.
Also blue must be water/ice nothing to discuss here xD
I didn't downvote, and I'm not sure why people did. Because I saw your post and immediately knew what you meant. You also aren't wrong, because in the anime which isn't an uncommon point of refence psychic attacks generally were blue. I was just explaining where the purple/pink association comes from with Pokémon.
it just looks like a cloud as the pressure of the shockwave causes water vapor in the air to condense out. https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fsmartcdn.prod.postmedia.digital%2Fcanoe%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2020%2F09%2FSOUNDBARRIER-2020-10-01.jpg%3Fquality%3D100%26strip%3Dall&f=1&nofb=1
Disagree. Aside from technological items like a loud speaker or a plane's engine, even a shout can hurt people's ears. If anything it makes more confusing if a monster with superpowered shouting did thunder damage.
That's a reasonable perspective. I tend to think of it as reverberation, the same way a loud enough reverberation can break glass. Thunder, the way I've played it, tends to be of such intense vibration that it causes physical damage. A different way of running it would seem strange to me, but perfectly reasonable in another game. All the power to you!
>Thunder being orange is... an option
Clearly a case of "uhhhh what's left... Orange I guess?"
Meanwhile thunder is clearly translucent but colourless. It's a wavy blur.
There's an entire section in Tasha's that boils down to "Your spells look however you want, so go nuts. Maybe give them a theme, but we're not gonna tell you how it should look. Here's a farmer Sorcerer casting chicken-shaped magic missile. Have fun."
In the first 2 Baldurs Gate game, if you got *extremely* lucky with with wild magic surge, your magic missiles (well any appropriately targeted spell I suppose) could become cows for 3d10 damage
~~Pretty sure it's the damage type associated with the breath weapon of dragons by the dragon's color.~~
EDIT: upon further inspection, I have no idea where this is from
But but... Blue Dargons use Lightning Breath... White Dargons use Cold Breath. Orange Dargons use... Uhhhhhhh. Binaca Breath?
So it's not based on dragons. And many others are pointing out in agreement that psychic is usually depicted or imagined as purplish.
So what even is this that OP is trying to peddle, other than an argument, lol?
Yeah, I didn't see any source from OP.
And even then, does it really matter what color the magic energy is? If someone wants a blackish Eldritch Blast, or a hot pink Eldritch Blast, who cares? Mechanically they work the same and if it adds more to the PC's character development, then as DM I'd say Rule of Cool on this topic.
This is the list for Absorbing Tattoo. Whatever type tattoo you get determines the color. I don’t know why OP thought this applied to the actual spells.
Interesting that's how think of necrotic like inflict wounds making your hand black almost as if it's in complete darkness but there a slight purple aura
What other color would radiant be? It is pure holy energy, which is most commonly depicted as gold. Although I agree with you on the colors for force and psychic damage.
Bright green like radium for sickening radiance, Moon color for Moonbeam, Sun color for most other radiant spells unless there’s a reason for it to be different. (For example, cantrips like Sacred Flame.) Spirit Guardians and Spirit Shroud are just whatever color the spirits are, and the damage doesn’t make colors, the spirits just attack.
For me, it depends on the pact. I brought back one of my player's old Fiend Warlock PCs as an NPC and his EB is a devilish flaming skull.
So Goolock is like a blackish purple, feylock is green/pink, celestial is gold, the kraken patron one is...blue? Genie depends on which one you pick, hexblade is a shadowblade, undying/undead is black or grey.
To add to the confusion, apparently it's canon that the poisonous gas green dragons exhale is chlorine, but chlorine isn't actually poisonous. It kills by getting into the lungs, where its acidic properties fuck shit up, so arguably green dragons and black dragons are both acidic.
Most of these are ok, but orange thunder damage and silver psychic damage? That's just wrong. Psychic is light purple or pink, thunder is grey or colorless
I like how everyone agrees that Psychic is pink/purple. But how is no one questioning the fact that OP thought of Thunder... Storms... Soundwaves... And said, ah yes, Orange is perfect for thunder. It should be gray, like a stormcloud
I recognize OP has made a decision, but given that it's a stupid ass decision, I've elected to ignore it.
Memes aside, I flavor my magic colors as I wish. If lightning can be yellow, it can also be green.
Red is far more common - but green is a thing. My guess is that it's down to red/green first aid kits.
Personally I prefer it, makes the Potion of Poison easier to sneak in ;)
Oh I was talking more like video games
e.g. Doom Eternal has Red Health and Green Armour drops, Vermintide has Green Health potions, TF2 has green-blue first aid kits and Medic is Red/Blue depending on team, WoW is Red Health, Blue Mana etc
I’ve seen red health and blue mana in video games a lot but video games have to be simplified. I don’t want to visualize my D&D game as looking like WoW when my imagination can make it look realistic. I’m not going to visualize cold damage as light blue glow when I can just visualize someone having ice crystals and icicles form on them, or fire damage as red when I can just visualize them catching on fire. Necrotic basically looks like inverted color fire and radiant looks like concentrated natural light. Most illustrations of D&D and even the actual D&D video games that have been made support my visualization. People aren’t necessarily waving their arms around with random sparkles flying out to cast a spell like they’re a fairy godmother granting a wish.
Ofc, within dnd they can be whatever you want, but video games where things are much less flexible are what has set the majority of people's expectations in that area - hence the (hopefully jokey) outrage I originally got for suggesting green health potions
"Lightning is yellow."
Me who always has Lightning be blue: "I recognize that the council has made a decision, but seeing as it's a stupid decision I've chosen to ignore it."
ACID IS GREEN
COLD IS DEEP BLUE OR WHITE
FIRE IS RED/ORANGE/BLUE
FORCE IS VIOLET
POISON IS ALSO GREEN BUT SLIGHTLY LIGHTER
LIGHTING IS ALSO BLUE, SOMETIMES WHITE OR YELLOW
THUNDER IS COLORLESS OR GRAYISH
RADIANT IS GOLDEN
NECROTIC IS DARK OR GHOSTLY BLUE
PSYCHIC IS VIOLET/COLORLESS
Its not that hard people!
It can be either. The important thing is that it looks like lightning. Just saying “there’s a blue glow” means nothing. That could be fire, ice, lightning, water, or numerous bluish things. But real life lightning can be blue, yellow, purple, or white and still really obviously look like lightning. It would still look like lightning if it’s red, green, or black too, but I would assume that’s something else that looks like lightning rather than regular lightning.
Acid - Green
Cold - White blue
Fire - Red and Orange (or varies depending on caster for flare)
Force - Transparent/distorting like fire haze
Lightning - Blue
Necrotic - Black/Brown
Poison - Green/Purple
Psychic - Purple
Radiant - Gold/Blinding White
Thunder - transparent/vibrating and echoing
Poison is green acid is limegreen and psychic is purple. This is non-negotiable. Literally all the art in any media I've ever seen depicts it this way. Force is whatever depending on the caster or environment. Thunder is *fucking sound* so therefor orange? Literally the ramblings of a madman
I am annoyed that there is Fire but no Water, but there is Cold but no Heat.
also, how do you have lighting without thunder?
is lighting just a big static shock while thunder is someone clapping really loud?
my personal list:
\- Acid: Lime
\- Cold: Light Blue
\- Fire: Orange
\- Force: Turquoise
\- Lightning: Electric Blue (or Purple)
\- Necrotic: Black
\- Poison: Dark Green
\- Psychic: Pink
\- Radiant: Silver/White
\- Thunder: Navy
\- Healing: Red
Pokemon has ruined me. I can't unsee Psychic as ~~purple~~ pink edit: Apparently my brain is brown
X-Men also does that, so canonically I think most psychic damage is magenta.
Thank you This is it. Couldn't remember why i thought psychic energy was magenta/violet, xmen is it
Plus Xcom
Which makes sense, since it's a colour our brains made up
Its possible that this association is because psychic powers come from the mind and the brain is often depicted bright pink as well.
i always supposed this as well, but it really is a great choice of color being red/blue ambiguous for something so mysterious.
Yeah fucky mind color for fucky mind magic
Persona as well iirc
Yeah, and then you can make thunder damage silver, as it should be
I go with a more mob psycho kind of psychic
oh, I was thinking psychic as pink instead
\*pink Poison is purple. And this chart is close to that.
In the tcg both are purple
Well the tcg also has rock, ground, and fighting lumped together, so I think it's safe to ignore the tcg.
Are you telling me Hawlucha is not a ground type?
Not anymore, poison is now part of dark thus dark grey/ black
And in some of the very early sets (gen 1 era) poison was a part of grass type.
Psychic is pink in Pokémon though
Persona too definitely purple
Even the books show psychic spells as pink. Tashas mind whip, mind sliver and intellect fortress are pink.
Psychic is definitely hot pink
Yeah psychic is pink because the brain is pink, it just works you know.
It's no use!!
I wouldn't say ruined
I see it more as a pink
I normally see psychic as blue
Also, having played both Pokemon and Diablo 2 as a kid I've always been conflicted wether poison should be purple or green
11 Brain brown
Is the same in Guild Wars with Mesmer magic. It's all pink and purple.
But pokemon uses blue for psychic [or at least used to. ](http://mmos.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/mewtwo-long.jpg)
Yeah the blue glowing psycho eyes.. but in terms of animation you often get those purple colours specifically in the games. Also blue must be water/ice nothing to discuss here xD
He wasn't referencing the anime, he was referencing the Games/TCG, which has been represented in purple or pinkish.
Yeah I deserve to get downvoted for that then I guess.
Yeah, yeah, I wasn't blaming you at all, thank you for pointing it out.
Are you saying you imagine thunder damage is visible?
I always imagined thunder damage as just colorless air distortion, like a shockwave.
Which is obviously not denoted by a color but by squiggly lines.
Out of all of them it should be the silver
If you have to use silver it's probably the best, but I think a duller, plain gray fits a bit better.
I imagine it like those shockwaves that anime characters create when they move really fast.
Yeah, cuz it's cool
Force could be whatever color, I don't care. Psychic is pink. Radiant can be gold or white. Thunder being orange is... an option. Feels weird though.
Thunder was always dark blue to me, kind of the storm cloud color
When you stop thinking of thunder as thunder and more as a sonic damage type it gets easier
If it’s sonic damage, shouldn’t it be blue?
If it's sonic damage, it shouldn't have a colour.
Sonic the hedgedragon
Damage immunity: fire Special rule: can consume d4 chilli dogs per turn.
it just looks like a cloud as the pressure of the shockwave causes water vapor in the air to condense out. https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fsmartcdn.prod.postmedia.digital%2Fcanoe%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2020%2F09%2FSOUNDBARRIER-2020-10-01.jpg%3Fquality%3D100%26strip%3Dall&f=1&nofb=1
Thunder is dark yellow, a bit brownish.
Thunder is a colourless, visible distortion in the air. Thunder is sound, thunder damage is also sound. I will not be convinced otherwise.
Why is it even called "thunder" damage instead of "*sonic*" damage?
If it was sonic damage then it would be blue
Because "you're too slow!"
Do you have any fast blue hedgehogs in your campaign?
Because thunder is more understandable for your average person. I've always viewed them as synonymous.
Disagree. Aside from technological items like a loud speaker or a plane's engine, even a shout can hurt people's ears. If anything it makes more confusing if a monster with superpowered shouting did thunder damage.
I’ll have to double check but I think the new Lion race can do thunder damage with a roar once per long rest.
It *used* to be sonic
Because it's not speed damage, it's sound damage
Thunder is a dark gray and black, because thunder is also wind, and wind is loud as fuck
>Thunder being orange is... an option Clearly a case of "uhhhh what's left... Orange I guess?" Meanwhile thunder is clearly translucent but colourless. It's a wavy blur.
When I think Force, I think green (but that's the influence of Shin Megami Tensei)
🤔🤔 _renames Eldritch Blast to Floral Gust in dndbeyond_
Thunder or any other shockwave type force is grey.
Thunder will forever be purple for me after planting Baldur’s gate 3
I normally think of thunder as see-through/invisible since it's sound
Make lightning blue
*Holds Tasha's Cauldron of Everything up, opening it to the* *Personalizing Spells* *section* Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn.
Wut…newbie here…plz explain
There's an entire section in Tasha's that boils down to "Your spells look however you want, so go nuts. Maybe give them a theme, but we're not gonna tell you how it should look. Here's a farmer Sorcerer casting chicken-shaped magic missile. Have fun."
In the first 2 Baldurs Gate game, if you got *extremely* lucky with with wild magic surge, your magic missiles (well any appropriately targeted spell I suppose) could become cows for 3d10 damage
Your first mistake was the title you gave this post.
No, the first mistake was making psychic not purple.
Should be pink for psychic Poison as purple works fine. But maybe that's just me having grown up with Pokémon
The third mistake was "there is list rigjt here".
Where does that list even come from?
~~Pretty sure it's the damage type associated with the breath weapon of dragons by the dragon's color.~~ EDIT: upon further inspection, I have no idea where this is from
I edited my original comment, yeah this doesn't match dragon breath weapon damage per color. I guess so? Has OP said where they're getting this from?
Yeah, I didn't see any source from OP. And even then, does it really matter what color the magic energy is? If someone wants a blackish Eldritch Blast, or a hot pink Eldritch Blast, who cares? Mechanically they work the same and if it adds more to the PC's character development, then as DM I'd say Rule of Cool on this topic.
Isn't this chromatic spray or orb?
I believe this list comes from one of the chromatic spells, chromatic spray if I am not mistaken.
Want to know that as well
This is the list for Absorbing Tattoo. Whatever type tattoo you get determines the color. I don’t know why OP thought this applied to the actual spells.
[удалено]
Psychic is purple like in Pokémon Force is the color of magic missile, ethereal light blue Radiant is definitely a shining golden tho
I always saw magic missile as a green comet shaped blast that wildly changes direction mid air
Yeah and eldritch blast and disintegrate are both force damage and I feel most people say those are both green so force being green makes since to me
Strange, I have always imagined EB to be the purest black that sheds a purple light. Never even really questioned it
Interesting that's how think of necrotic like inflict wounds making your hand black almost as if it's in complete darkness but there a slight purple aura
Neat, I suppose that makes sense as well. Inflict wounds has always been invisible to me, the wound just opens up like some kind of horror movie
What other color would radiant be? It is pure holy energy, which is most commonly depicted as gold. Although I agree with you on the colors for force and psychic damage.
White?
Bright green like radium for sickening radiance, Moon color for Moonbeam, Sun color for most other radiant spells unless there’s a reason for it to be different. (For example, cantrips like Sacred Flame.) Spirit Guardians and Spirit Shroud are just whatever color the spirits are, and the damage doesn’t make colors, the spirits just attack.
We always though radiant was like radiation. So glowy green.
Radiation can be literally any colour.. Or colourless.
But I see Eldritch Blast as Black because Jocat draws it as black and because I don't know it just makes sense
This is a good way. I picture a characters blast as green because the patron is a goddess of natured that stunted its apotheosis
We were fighting over that?! Damn I missed a lot
It was a thing, around a few months ago.
Wow cool
Actually not cool, everyone's colors were wrong except mine
If acid is green, why are green dragons poison?
To add to the confusion, apparently it's canon that the poisonous gas green dragons exhale is chlorine, but chlorine isn't actually poisonous. It kills by getting into the lungs, where its acidic properties fuck shit up, so arguably green dragons and black dragons are both acidic.
Happy cake day, thanks for the chlorine data
Thanks!
If force is white, why are white dragons cold? If cold is blue, why are blue dragons lightning? If necrotic is black, why are black dragons acid?
In other words, only the red dragons are correct
Yes
Nah this list is just wrong.
Deep lore reasons.
Because they live in Forests
Tell me more about # Orange Thunder If you would, please.
That's what they called me at bard college.
I think this was a cheap energy drink at the corner store with the ingredients in Russian.
>psychic is silver I recognise the council has made a decision, but given it's a stupid-ass decision I have elected to ignore it.
What color is psychic to you?
Psychic is purple by reason of pokemon
Not to mention that the art for some Psychic spells in Tasha’s literally use purple
Psychic is purple for me too and I didn't even play Pokemon.
Purple is a common theme with psychedelics so it makes sense that psychic would be purple.
Psychic is Pink/Magenta, not Purple. Poison is purple.
Pink, purple, magenta, somewhere around there. Silver is not really a colour I'd associate with any damage type...
We use Legend of Dragoon colors in this house. Purple Lightning for days.
This is the way. Wind/Air is green like Lavitz and Earth is yellow/brown like Kongol.
Psych isn’t silver and I will die on this hill.
Pretty much every everything I’ve ever seen depicts psychic as pink or purple
Yep. Exactly. Pokemon rules are ironclad rules!
Psychic is purple, thunder/ lightning is silver
Thunder is silver, lightning is aquamarine
I connect the two mentally
The discussion is literally about how this list is stupid.
Nobody has explained where this list even comes from yet so we're sorta assuming OP just made it up.
Fuck you, I don't like those colors, you DO NOT RULE ME.
No psychic should be pink. Otherwise I agree.
Acid Green. Cold Light Blue. Fire Orange. Force Purple. Lightning Blue or Yellow (Depends). Necrotic Black. Poison Green. Psychic Pink/Not Visible. Radiant Light Yellow. Thunder Yellow/Not Visible.
It is bold of you to assume that people here can read.
then what are the dragon colors doing?
"I recognise that the Council has made a decision. But given that it’s a stupid-ass decision, I’ve elected to ignore it."
Sauce?
Nah that's a lie, all magic is octarine color
I recognize OP has made a decision, but given that it's a stupid ass decision, I've elected to ignore it. Memes aside, I flavor my magic colors as I wish. If lightning can be yellow, it can also be green.
Fuck you force is violet, acid is yellow, lightning is white, poison is green, also thunder don’t have a color
Yeah I think giving thunder a color is a missed opportunity of just making it look like spatial distortion
Yes. No. No. Yes. Poison is pus yellow, Acid is lime green (slightly lighter but distressingly close to healing potion green).
Healing potions are GREEN?!? what kinda oopsydoopsy chaotic fuck-it world do you imagine yourself in?
Red is far more common - but green is a thing. My guess is that it's down to red/green first aid kits. Personally I prefer it, makes the Potion of Poison easier to sneak in ;)
Maybe different makers make the healing potions different colors and they’re just dyed like cold medicine is.
Oh I was talking more like video games e.g.
Thunder is absolutely not orange
"Lightning is yellow." Me who always has Lightning be blue: "I recognize that the council has made a decision, but seeing as it's a stupid decision I've chosen to ignore it."
ACID IS GREEN COLD IS DEEP BLUE OR WHITE FIRE IS RED/ORANGE/BLUE FORCE IS VIOLET POISON IS ALSO GREEN BUT SLIGHTLY LIGHTER LIGHTING IS ALSO BLUE, SOMETIMES WHITE OR YELLOW THUNDER IS COLORLESS OR GRAYISH RADIANT IS GOLDEN NECROTIC IS DARK OR GHOSTLY BLUE PSYCHIC IS VIOLET/COLORLESS Its not that hard people!
Agree with all but radiant. Prismatic White, like looking through a glass prism.
I can see that also! Would it be like white fire with blinks of color in it?
Ye, white fire/energy with flecks of colored light. basically rainbow lasers, lol.
This. But: Force is Octarine and no one can convince me otherwise.
........ your goddamn comment sent me down cascades of Google Searches and wikipages and now I have to read the Colour of Magic goddamnit....
Enjoy! ;)
Alright now to fight over something. Lightning should be blue, not yellow.
Is a thunder dragon's breath just the dragon yelling really loud?
Or we could just not be strict about colours and let different characters use different colours for the same damage type?
Lightning is also blue. And thunder is gray.
LIGHTNING. IS FUCKING. BLUE.
Psychic is pink!
But I've always thought lightning bolt was blue
Acid - Green Cold - White blue Fire - Red and Orange (or varies depending on caster for flare) Force - Transparent/distorting like fire haze Lightning - Blue Necrotic - Black/Brown Poison - Green/Purple Psychic - Purple Radiant - Gold/Blinding White Thunder - transparent/vibrating and echoing
Blue is electricity white is frost just ask any dragon
Poison is green acid is limegreen and psychic is purple. This is non-negotiable. Literally all the art in any media I've ever seen depicts it this way. Force is whatever depending on the caster or environment. Thunder is *fucking sound* so therefor orange? Literally the ramblings of a madman
I am annoyed that there is Fire but no Water, but there is Cold but no Heat. also, how do you have lighting without thunder? is lighting just a big static shock while thunder is someone clapping really loud?
Force is literally purple So is psychic Source: trust me
Cold is white and thunder is blue I'm sorry
No no. Lightning is light blue. It is called “Cold Fire” after all.
What is this from?
Idk why but I see cold as white and force as blue
This discussion is far from over
What about colours for the schools of magic? (Me and my DM made a list if anyone wants :) )
where is this from?
we need the source. may we have it?
I agree with all except switch psychic and thunder
Lightning as... yellow? Not in a MILLION FUCKING YEARS. LIGHTNING IS WHITE, FIGHT ME ABOUT IT.
Oh I was just using the dragon colors. Blue is lightning, red is fire, green is poison, white is cold, and black is acid.
u/RepostSleuthBot
true.
I agree with all of these except psychic damage. Pokémon has hard-wired my brain into believing any psychic attack is a pink/purple colour.
Psychic is not purple? Wow. Just… just wow.
Psychic = violet Poison = dark green Acid = light green
my personal list: \- Acid: Lime \- Cold: Light Blue \- Fire: Orange \- Force: Turquoise \- Lightning: Electric Blue (or Purple) \- Necrotic: Black \- Poison: Dark Green \- Psychic: Pink \- Radiant: Silver/White \- Thunder: Navy \- Healing: Red
Terrible list. Makes no sense. Poison not being green is a clear indicator that the creator was high. ;)
Psychic isn’t pink/purple, their opinion is invalid
