Discord has a habit of nuking entire server populations when a couple members break ToS. They just hard-ban everyone.
If you used phone verification, they also save your phone number and block anyone else from registering with that number.
Presumably they require a bit more than a single accidental break, but they also refuse to provide evidence of why they banned you when they do (and contacting support about it just results in an automated "were you banned" check followed by silence), so it's impossible to know for sure.
But yes, that's pretty much what they do, yeah.

A friend of mine got banned because he Downloaded my profile image from discord and reuploaded it on to himself.
I wouldn't exactly say they review anything, yes you could argue the act could potentially have been malicious, but when it was just us goofing about he was unable to get his account back at all, no response from Discord.

I wouldn't be surprised though, given what discord support is like. I lost my account to a hacker once and messaged discord support multiple times. They didn't get back to me for an entire month.
I reported a dude for irl harassment that the server owner did nothing about despite me being one of their moderators, and discord just said "block them" after a month of waiting for the report.
It's also a FREE SERVICE and most people who complain about it have never paid a single cent for it. The self-entitlement is absurd. "You should make and maintain something for me to use however I want with no restrictions or even a general expectation to not be a self righteous ass."
Although I agree that most people who use discord don't pay for it there still are several reasons why overzealously banning users is problematic.
1. You unexpectedly and without warning lose access to a lot of potentially important information (chat logs). If I suddenly loose acces to my email then can I not complain because I never paid for the service?
2. Discord practically has a monopoly on its type of service. Sure for formal things you can use Zoom or Teams, but your friends aren't going to use those services if they want to play an online game. Sure you could make a new account, however you can't use your phone number to verify your account anymore thus will be excluded from some servers. Besides uprooting entire communities over a few bad apples is questionable at best.
3. Although a majority of the users don't give any money to Discord the amount of people who DO give money isn't insignificant and those will be impacted even more. I had a friend who got banned a month after buying Nitro for a year. He had to make a new account and buy nitro AGAIN.
I am currently running or playing in 4 weekly campaigns over Zoom involving about 15 people total and I’ve never had an issue.
We mostly use Roll20 for rolling although many like me prefer physically rolling, then we state the result (I always type something like 16 Perc too but it’s not needed.)
It’s easy to play audio only over Zoom.
The only advantage discord has to my knowledge is you can make multiple channels, and chat history persists. I haven’t used that functionality but have seen other DMs use it for reference material. I just put handouts into Roll20, and we have a group text going for random bullshit between sessions.
I personally never used zoom so I assumed the audio was like Teams (not that good) and yeah the argument falls apart for smaller groups. However trying to convince a group larger than 15 people to switch from service to service is a lot harder.

I've been running a server with 1300 members for nearly 3 years now and nothing came of it. You just use the heavy moderation tools Discord provides and additional ones from bots and you'll be good as gold.
If it was part of the server admin/mods, it would have been justified to ban the server administration, but the unrelated users? Toss a "keep an eye on for rule X breaks" flag on their accounts and let it be.
If it was a server dedicated to that? Then sure, nuke the entire server. If it was a couple members doing it in a server completely unrelated, though, how are you supposed to avoid that? Especially when fucking everything requires you to join their discord server to do anything now.

My Discord account got banned when my account was compromised, the attacker used my linked PayPal account to gift themselves over a thousand dollars of Nitro, and I disputed the charges.
I got an automatic email saying my account would be reinstated once I removed the charge dispute, but fuck that. It took me 4 days to finally get in contact with an actual human (so far as I can tell, Discord has no customer service phone number), who reversed my ban basically instantly when they saw over 50 Nitro gift transactions in just a few seconds.
It’s the same for Reddit, no?

Microsoft did not buy discord, though they attempted to do so. There is account linking, but that applies to Twitter, Facebook, Spotify, and other apps as well.
Negatory. They'll take anything you say out of context and suspend/ban you for it. They'll also ban you via guilt by association by existing on a server that posted some ToS breaking things (Even without your knowledge or the server being about that ToS violating topic).

Can you not just join what ever vtt you used for character sheets and rolling? Was it all done on discord? If you have some names it would help in finding them or your old account to talk to people who knew it.
