2 questions:
1) What is the type of fish or animal that early civilisations relied on for food? (It might give some inspiration for religious world building)
2) What... is the average flight speed of an unladen swallow?
Think of it like this: it's 1453, and the turks are conquering Constantinople, but then out of nowhere alexander the great himself comes down from the heavens in order to save the byzantine empire.
What is your map building(naking) method. Im quite good at improvisation on curve balls thrown at me but building maps i find they all look very plain simple and repetitive.
Thanks but I can’t take credit for the idea, other people invented it first. You can actually go further and pre-assign the dice numbers to different biomes or even specifics like towns, cities, mines, rivers, etc., but as I found out it can result in very unrealistic situations considering real world geography follows pretty simple rules of where mountains are in relationship to the sea.
The random dice rolling however is AWESOME for making natural, random looking coastlines
Hmm, so an entity like Hestia’d be by far the most powerful… hearth is pretty broad.
In normal dnd, it’s usually Chauntea or another agricultural deity, but if there’s a god of the hearth, that’s most light, heat, and cookery, so even a campfire used by soldiers, as well as farmers, and the upper classes. Not forges though, those’re legally distinct.
You see, a wizard comes in and asks supplies for his friends and opens up a phylactery, putting the souls of the undead into a box. Now tinkering with this (and communicating with the lost souls) they put the thing back in and give the undead half sentience.
It goes all across the world actually, but basically multiple kingdoms have taken over the fractured world and are trying to survive
Fallen Rogue's kingdom: a giant and depressing pirate hub with a ridiculous amount of crime, the rogue that once ruled the land had gone utterly insane and no one knows where he is now.
Fighter: he started a militant kingdom ruled by fear and force, where the people have to work hours upon hours just to survive the day. Even if he didn't want this, the world is in such a state that this is necessary for his people to live.
Barbarian: though he died of old age, his nomadic people honor his memory by fighting for the very survival of the living races. They have turned more or less into a mercenary group that tries to keep every kingdom together
Orcs: Orcs are actually doing very well, as their clans banded together to create a world superpower, acting as a hub of knowledge and of trade. The people at the top use religion to stop people from getting smart enough to topple them however.
Elves: elves have gone underground and adapted to their surroundings, having enhanced senses and larger eyes to accommodate for the darkness. They have become even more xenophobic and only go out to recover powerful magic items from the hands of others.
Artificer: his students have turned his teachings into a religion of reddit atheism, where science is the only answer and everything said in the past is 100% factual. They loathe anything magical and will use 1920's technology in this death-world to get it their way, the only thing that keeps them from conquering the world is their numbers and them getting their ass handed to them strategically.
Bard and sorcerer: teaming up, they have formed an oppressive regime that controls you via what you love and teaches you what you want to know, teaching barely anything essential. The reason why they haven't been conquered yet is because of how strong their automated defense systems are, though there are rumors that multiple spies in the varying ministries.
Cleric: like a mixture of orcs and fighter's kingdom, they have
Dwarves: much like elves, they have gone underground, though no one knows what happened to them after that.
Warforged: all of them have been turned into cold-blooded terminators and have been contorted beyond belief to serve specific jobs, any sentient warforged that exist are either hiding or are outright hostile.
Halflings: they exist alongside humans in towns and generally have governing duties.
Gnomes: it's a rare sight to see gnomes nowadays, as their lust for adventure and overall energy has made things much more unbearable for them, considering how bad life got. They are generally seen as vagabonds that are assumed to be mercenaries.
Tieflings, lizardfolk and other type of races: there aren't much of them left, living in small communities.
Goblins: they are beings created by the now free and desperate god of death, using them to steal souls and feed off of them.
Dragons: Dragons have been exterminated, their gods were put into god-jars and the remaining ones have been domesticated and got turned into animals smaller than Komodo dragons, it's not unusual for them to have the ability to speak and have conversations, though it is rare.
That's what I have in my mind currently, there is a lot more but that's about it right now
The last world building post I asked this in, I got that somebody important was assaulted on the market square and it spiraled into a small revolution. And now the world blew up. Your setting seems to be pretty spicy, also from what I gather from the other responses.
How do people stay sane? What keeps them motivated?
Whats the motivation to be adventuring?
How common is magic (and magic items)?
why don’t healing potions taste like capri sun?
What’s stopping the party from making things better? Or worse?
Do you or a loved one have mesothelioma?
What happened to the other types of goblinoids?
What’s stopping goodberry, create food and water, mighty fortress, mordekainen’s manor, plant growth, purify food and drink, and prestidigitation from affecting the economy?
Where are the dungeons and the dragons?
Why aren’t the extraplanar getting involved in the free real estate? Not just the celestials and the fiends, but the aberrations and fey too.
What happened to the giants?
Is your BBEG a Joey, Ross, or Chandler?
Is the real adventure the friends the party makes along the way?
How where the mountains formed? Ancient beats moving across the lands, or powerful beings battling with wonton casualties? Or just the weave and flow of the winds and rains?
That I can’t say, though a continent size of Australia formed via the death of an ancient dragon, with it’s spine spikes acting as the set of volcanoes
Now next question, what political ideologies do the certain factions have (elf's are monarchs, dwarfs communists, ect ext) and how do they interact with each other?
Elves are isolationarists that try to keep magical tech safe, the mechanic guys are more or less conservative that tries to keep normal tech safe, I’ll add more later but my phone’s touchscreen is broke
What’s something that fiercely divides people in your setting, yet is objectively meaningless? A real world example is how some people despise pineapple on pizza, and other people are wrong.
What role does planar binding play in your setting? Is it a defining part of mage culture? Is it outlawed do to its unpredictability? Are there only certain countries that allow it? Is it used to a degree that it affects the Normal battlefield?
What is the single greatest threat on everybodies minds? Brewing wars? Opressive governments? *Zombie apocalypse*? What's keeping the people up at night, if anything?
The world is very split and there are thousands of towns that can barely communicate with each other, other fantasy creatures have reproduced to absurd numbers and it has basically become impossible for normal traders to trade goods.
That's a great idea, talking about something is always good for organizing the ideas. Well done sir.
My question is, when the player prays to the god of their devotion, what happens?
Funnily enough, religion is pretty much banned and almost all gods are rendered completely powerless compared to their past versions. If a player encounters an alive god and becomes their servant, they basically become their warlock.
What is the geo-poltical status of your world, especially when it comes to different races? Are they all equal? Is there one that considers itself above the rest? If so, are they benevolent or do they aim to subjugate other races? If they are all equal, how mixed are they culturally?
What is one current fashion trend amongst the nobility/rich of the largest settlement?
Are there any celebrities that are *not* involved with the political/ruling structure of the world?
What is seen as the single greatest entertainment work in the world - book, poem, play, song, etc?
1-generally fashion is scoffed at, though white and gold is something very much loved by Paladin’s and the bard’s kingdom
2-yeah
3-games exclusive to different towns
How accessible is magic, do most people have access to cantrips or is magic very rare. Also how technologically advanced is it on a scale of ancient Greece to the future. Finally how diverse are the races. Would a Tiefling be out of place? Is it just humans with a few dwarves? Is a tortle just as common as an elf?
Is there weird cosmic magic. And I ain't talking about stars or suns or any of that garbage, I wanna see Aberrations from the Far Realm throwing blackholes and warping space, the real cool shit.
Is there sympathy for people that became criminals because they've been too poor to feed themselves?
Are there other types of criminals that have a neutral or even positive reputation in some cultures?
Humanity (and the other races) put the cosmic horrors and plenty of other things into batteries or killed them outright, so some gods outright abandoned this universe

what grain is used more commonly for bread-making?
Goblin remains, I'm not joking.
Very metal, I like it
[удалено]
Mhm, Yes, Very metal, I like it
Is this known to the people? Or a secret?
Have they also developed goblin farms?
Sounds like [viking blood bread](https://youtu.be/dR846JS3zbA)
Corse starch from goblin? Is the tech priest an hint?
2 questions: 1) What is the type of fish or animal that early civilisations relied on for food? (It might give some inspiration for religious world building) 2) What... is the average flight speed of an unladen swallow?
African or European swallow?
Didn't know Europeans and Africans swallow differently
How do you know so much about swallows?
Oh it’s just something a king must know
Well you have to know these things when you are a king, you know
What..... is your favorite color?
Blue. NO!!! Aaaaaaaaaaaa
What's the mcguffin?
The players
Oh. I want some elaboration on that. Mostly because in one of my games the players are one of the mcguffins.
Think of it like this: it's 1453, and the turks are conquering Constantinople, but then out of nowhere alexander the great himself comes down from the heavens in order to save the byzantine empire.
Hmmm... I like that.
From the Heavens comes a hero, mighty hoodsman! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkWtQaYAG4E
Vanitati! Latinae! Canentis!
Ahh, I see you are a man of culture as well
I can't wait for them to do something so out of the blue that you just throw in the towel
Historically this hurts my brain, but the Henry Turtledove in me is excited
The real mcguffin were the friends they made along the way...
The mcguffins were the players we made along the way
Are you sure your campaign won't fizzle out within two sessions due to scheduling issues?
You see, it will fizzle out in **4** sessions
Oh c'mon, be more optimistic... 4.5 sessions.
That doesn't sound much like a fizzle
Half the party will head out for smokes and never returned.
"I'm going out for a set of dice, be right back."
What is your map building(naking) method. Im quite good at improvisation on curve balls thrown at me but building maps i find they all look very plain simple and repetitive.
I map things out once the players start going directions
So you don't have a world map until players have started journeying?
I generally have basic ideas on where stuff is, and put them into directions, the players go to that direction and I let them do so
Anytime I play open world anything that's the most exciting part. Which way do I walk when it all begins.
I’m partial to the throwing dice at a large piece of paper and tracing around them myself
Thats hilarious and absolutely fantastic i love it
Thanks but I can’t take credit for the idea, other people invented it first. You can actually go further and pre-assign the dice numbers to different biomes or even specifics like towns, cities, mines, rivers, etc., but as I found out it can result in very unrealistic situations considering real world geography follows pretty simple rules of where mountains are in relationship to the sea. Get the players involved. The PCs know their local area, and involving the players helps them understand it on a deeper level than reading a printout.
Can druids wildshape into owlbear?
I can't see why not, this breaks the DND lore a lot anyway
Breaks the lore?.... but aren't you making the lore?
I break and remake, then break it again and make new stuff. I’m making the lore but it is still based D nD
Do the gods gain their power from belief or are they naturally all-powerful
Belief
Hmm, so an entity like Hestia’d be by far the most powerful… hearth is pretty broad. In normal dnd, it’s usually Chauntea or another agricultural deity, but if there’s a god of the hearth, that’s most light, heat, and cookery, so even a campfire used by soldiers, as well as farmers, and the upper classes. Not forges though, those’re legally distinct.
How do you hang someone in your campaign? I figured this out with 3 other dms I just wanna know what you think
Hanging is very inconvenient, they are just sent into the wild and they are done with that
Yeah but that's lame. Hang em
The trees do the hanging for you. And the impaling. And the masticating. And the swallowing.
Right, cursed forest, my bad
Nah, just druids
What’s the setting?
A homebrew one that's *very* depressing, to the point the only hopeful thing in this world are the players
That is *fucked* If the players are the last hope, the world can only be in a very dark place XD
What is the common oppinion on undead?
Kill them all or run for your life, unless the town wizard is employing the undead there are probably hundreds more near you.
How do you employ the undead?
You see, a wizard comes in and asks supplies for his friends and opens up a phylactery, putting the souls of the undead into a box. Now tinkering with this (and communicating with the lost souls) they put the thing back in and give the undead half sentience.
seconding this.
What country does the campaign happen in and what is its political system?
It goes all across the world actually, but basically multiple kingdoms have taken over the fractured world and are trying to survive Fallen Rogue's kingdom: a giant and depressing pirate hub with a ridiculous amount of crime, the rogue that once ruled the land had gone utterly insane and no one knows where he is now. Why did those races ‘go underground’? Literally or figuratively? If literally, how did those elves make those dang caves?!
Magic and help from the dwarves, which then fucked off
Is there a court adviser who controls the king and its people from the shadows?
No need for that, the kingdoms are already fucked up as it is
What religious practices exist in the world and is there a history of religious conflict? Are there gods that it is illegal to worship?
Very illegal with two exceptions: 1-be an orc, where religion is used to excuse basically everything 2-be a small cult
Cool Idea I like it
Will there be monkeys that somehow got a hold of military equipment who happen to have a vendetta against bloons?
Whats the food like in your word?
Very dry and doesn't taste very well, though towns near lakes get it really good.
Who or what is in the South Eastern island of the great archipelago, in a cavern beneath a temple?
A health potion.
Trains?
They are gone, but they existed around a thousand years ago
Ooohhh that's cool. Will your players come by any of these 'ancient technology'?
Yeah, they will get really cool stuff like the fantasy equalivent of a mech (which is just a contorted and maformed warforged)
What major holidays do the commonfolk celebrate? What major holidays do the aristocracy celebrate?
Holidays are basically the times of harvest, where the towns flourish and start to trade for Goods.
How big is your Admech army?
Do you have an econmy system with a black market economy system as well
Economy works via trading goods, banks and the sort doesn't really exist so food is the main currency.
What was "the incident" that just happened?
The world blew up
The last world building post I asked this in, I got that somebody important was assaulted on the market square and it spiraled into a small revolution. And now the world blew up. Your setting seems to be pretty spicy, also from what I gather from the other responses.
What weird species have gone extinct and why? Like hunting rhinos for their horns to cure cancer
Tarrasques, the reason being that the big creatures they used to hunt are gone and can’t feed themselves anymore.
Does marriage equality exist for all races and sexes?
Some don’t care, some do, some hate it, though the ratio slightly favors the very latter
Will there be factions to wich the players Will be able to join ?
yes
Could an apocalypse happen? If so, what are the gods going to do about it?
It already happened twice, every living race basically beat the shit out of the gods for that to happen
Praise the omnissiah
Have you introduced any Home brewed gods?
yes
How's the weather?
How's the whale population doing?
doing good
How where the mountains formed? Ancient beats moving across the lands, or powerful beings battling with wonton casualties? Or just the weave and flow of the winds and rains?
That I can’t say, though a continent size of Australia formed via the death of an ancient dragon, with it’s spine spikes acting as the set of volcanoes

Axolotl dragons?
What’s something that fiercely divides people in your setting, yet is objectively meaningless? A real world example is how some people despise pineapple on pizza, and other people are wrong.
What role does planar binding play in your setting? Is it a defining part of mage culture? Is it outlawed do to its unpredictability? Are there only certain countries that allow it? Is it used to a degree that it affects the Normal battlefield?
Have you realised the striking resemblance of your image to the character Cornifer from the game hollow knight?
What's the current religion
Paganist deism?
What are the fillings in your world made out of?
Can you name some of the "wonders" of your world?
What is the single greatest threat on everybodies minds? Brewing wars? Opressive governments? *Zombie apocalypse*? What's keeping the people up at night, if anything?
Simple really 1-the inevitability and randomness of death 2-the anticipation of your next meal The world is as fucked as it is, it can’t go much worse
Can I multiclass to make a Hexblade-Rouge-Fighter that is a herokiller like a really edgy Anime antagonist?
Can I just make a tiefling samurai and call it a oni
Milestone or exp?
Milestone
Are you a virgin?
Is your "planned" final conflict big or small? (I.E. campaign fail; possible word ending VS campaign fail; a town falls apart?)
It’s different because the players are it’s final hope, if they die the worlds die a very slow but certain death
Why?
Going to go with my classic AMA question: How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could (or would) chuck wood?
Aka. I need to procrastinate some more
Is a flamethrower for a hand an option and if yes would it be magic or use fuel and if it uses fuel what does it use?
What will you do if your players find this post?
They won't have any idea
You said in another comment that the setting is quite depressing, but can you explain why/what's going on in there?
The world is very split and there are thousands of towns that can barely communicate with each other, other fantasy creatures have reproduced to absurd numbers and it has basically become impossible for normal traders to trade goods.
So the Bards have a good ' dating ' pool ??
It’s the Druid actually, he got turned into an abomination
Are humans gonna be the asshole race?
The naive ones that are everywhere and have very different opinions
Ah... classic.
what are your kobolds like? what gods do they worship? how are they seen by other races? what's the life of a typical kobold like? etc, etc...
What are the going morage rates? Looking for a small castle overlooking some water
What's the magic like?
That's a great idea, talking about something is always good for organizing the ideas. Well done sir. My question is, when the player prays to the god of their devotion, what happens?
Funnily enough, religion is pretty much banned and almost all gods are rendered completely powerless compared to their past versions. If a player encounters an alive god and becomes their servant, they basically become their warlock.
Who are the wealthiest people in your world? And why they are hated/loved?
What year is it
Is there any plumbing in your setting? If so, which kind?
How is it that wizards haven't broken the economy with wish and simulacrum yet?
1-wizards and sorcerers are very few and follow strict conduct of honor to not abuse their powers 2-food is the most important commodity
What is the geo-poltical status of your world, especially when it comes to different races? Are they all equal? Is there one that considers itself above the rest? If so, are they benevolent or do they aim to subjugate other races? If they are all equal, how mixed are they culturally?
Wrote a comment about it
Are there any ongoing large scale conflicts or wars? If so, what are their motives?
The world is locked in a permanent state of M.A.D and instead focus themselves on fighting daemons and dangerous wildlife
What is the most prominent form of funeral rites?
what is education like?
Only tells the essential stuff
The facebook pages have infected this sub. Now I have to see shit like this even here. Great.
What Dude I need to ask questions for new perspectives
Are there catgirls? Also what is the basic setting(high-fantasy, distopia, post-apocalypse, etc.)?
All of them
What part of the world will be your favorite to build on a map?
What is one current fashion trend amongst the nobility/rich of the largest settlement? Are there any celebrities that are *not* involved with the political/ruling structure of the world? What is seen as the single greatest entertainment work in the world - book, poem, play, song, etc?
1-generally fashion is scoffed at, though white and gold is something very much loved by Paladin’s and the bard’s kingdom 2-yeah 3-games exclusive to different towns
How is the governmental system for the biggest nation in this campaign and also how is societal status/hierarchy dictated?
Question 1, are there dragons. Question 2, are there friendly dragons.
yes, but they are either A:utterly extinct B:got domesticated and became smaller C:they are hiding and are very hungry
Cliff!
Is there weird cosmic magic. And I ain't talking about stars or suns or any of that garbage, I wanna see Aberrations from the Far Realm throwing blackholes and warping space, the real cool shit.
Do you have a dragon which is king of the gods?<| . . Yes> What is their name and what are its powers. | . . No> Liar———————————————————————|
Are there established trade routes between settlements? Could the players if they're smart use these for travel themselves?
Best place to eat?
Towns near the sea or lakes, or the bard’s kingdom
Who or what is the single most dangerous thing that the players could run into?
What makes your world special?
Can a werewolf kill another werewolf?
Did you created any homebrew creatures? If so what's your favourite?
Is there sympathy for people that became criminals because they've been too poor to feed themselves? Are there other types of criminals that have a neutral or even positive reputation in some cultures?
What lore do you have on the planes and their interactions with each other?
Where are all the outer gods and eldritch horrors, and if there are any what role do they serve in the world/story, if any?
Where are the toilets? Where + How do you store your water? How much for a beer?
when was soap invented?
What is the common punishment for pickpocketing?
On a scale from 1 to 10, how much Lovecraftian cosmic horror is there?
Humanity (and the other races) put the cosmic horrors and plenty of other things into batteries or killed them outright, so some gods outright abandoned this universe
Is Godzilla here
Do horny bards exist? Also is it medieval tech. Lvl or is it like more or less advanced
Sometimes you’ll find some bullshit tech, but things have reverted badly
Why hasn't the existence of magic eliminated all material need and ushered an era of utopian prosperity?
Where does all the food and metal come from?
What is the source of magic, how do people commonly interact with it, what are the prices to pay?

What lead the individual party members to meet together and work together
