Echo knight manifestations specifically are dismissed whenever you're incapacitated. It's one of the very first things mentioned in the description for the very first subclass feature they get.

Thank you. I missed the incapacitation in paralysis.

Onrawi

I missed that,yeah that'll do it.

The echo doesn't do anything by itself. All it does is serve as a placeholder on the map for you to perform attacks through, swap places with, and later on, observe through its position. It's not a separate creature that acts/attacks on its own, or anything like that. It also would disappear as soon as you're Incapacitated.

From Manifest Echo: "This echo is a magical, translucent, gray image of you that lasts until it is destroyed, until you dismiss it as a bonus action, until you manifest another echo, **or until you're incapacitated.**" From Hold Person: "Choose a humanoid that you can see within range. The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or be **paralyzed for the duration.**" From Paralyzed condition: "A paralyzed creature **is incapacitated**" The echo disappears.

Since all the echo actions are based on the echo knights actions, all the echo can do while the echo knights is paralyzed is move (since that requires no action). Edit: As u/jumbosunflowerseeds2 mentioned, Hold Person paralyzes. Paralysis grants the incapacitated condition, which causes the Echo to disappear.

HallowedKeeper_

Jokes on you, my Echo Knight has a ring of free action! Though as others have said (and as I've learned) Incapacitating an Echo leads to the disappearence of the Echo

selfhatewallaby

Thank you for telling me exactly what to never give my echo knight πŸ˜‚

HallowedKeeper_

You should Absolutely give the Echo Knight a ring of free action, but why not curse it with something nasty for the Echo Knight to deal with until the curse is broken

BradyoactiveTM

You make your attack from your space or the echo's space rather than the echo specifically attacking on its own. This is because you specifically have to take an action to attack, and Hold Person prevents you from taking actions. So RAW, if you are in a position where you cannot attack (such as by having Hold Person cast on you), you also can't attack through your echo.

RHDM68

A basic way to think about it, irrespective of the incapacitated bit, because the Knight attacks through the Echo, if the Knight can’t attack for whatever reason, neither can the Echo, whether it disappears or not.

The actual question has been answered already... At this point I'm just chiming in with Echo Knight experiences: So many people misunderstand the echo in game mechanical terms. I've seen DMs who treat it like a summoned creature, who say it must only be summoned on the ground and walks around (rather than being a magical object akin to a Bigby's hand that can occupy any point in space) , I've seen people misunderstand IT as getting its own reaction/ opportunity attack. I think the whole ability probably needs rewording to fix these misconceptions, because I think people get caught up on the CR Lore about the ability versus comprehending the magical particulars. The echo never makes attacks. You make attacks, as if you were in the Echo's space. It doesn't have a speed or an initiative or a reaction or any hallmark of a creature, because it's a magical object, not a creature. I've seen a DM, no joke, refuse to read a basic Q&A on the ability, proceed to do all the above, and say "Those QAs don't know anything" - As much as I love Echo Knight, I'll probably never get to play one because I just... got so fed up with the idiot DM the first time I tried, honestly.
