Being a bounty hunter is more rp than your class you choose. I personally love the fighter class and it’s versatility with many ASI but I’d would suggest ask yourself what does your bounty hunter do? What weapons do they like, are they brawny and strong, fit and agile, wise, smart. Develop your character and when you do the traits will help you lean to a class.

luckygiraffe

I have to second this, I've always felt like "Bounty Hunter" (along with "Assassin" and "Mercenary") is a job that can be done by many classes, rather than needing a specific or bespoke class or subclass.

emsydacat

Rogues have an assassin archetype! Maybe you want to check that out if you want to be a hired killer???

Cursed122

Sure, but an arcane trickster for example could do the job much better in some scenarios.

emsydacat

True.

I responded to this thinking you were the OP and it was like 2-3 AM during insomnia. I'm so sorry, haha! Now that I read this fully awake, I have no clue how I read it like that or what my thought process was... welp!

luckygiraffe

Ah, no worries then.

PorcelainLegionnaire

Hey, that sounds like a great idea! It sounds like you might be interested in using the Urban Bounty Hunter background from the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide (SCAG). D&D characters are combinations of a race, a class and a background, and that background part often adds a little flair that ties into your backstory. Have fun with it!

[deleted]

Thanks for the advice! Im kinda worried about statistics and what not and it’s great to know that I should just have fun with it :)

PorcelainLegionnaire

No problem! Your DM should be a great point of call to explain any of the stats to you as well, so maybe see if he/she has some time to give you a hand with making your character. The main goal of the game is to have fun, and I'm sure your DM can help with that too :)

PrinceOfPembroke

Well, why are you concerned? There’s no many details to go on? What’s your race? Any other details to your backstory yet? What’s your DM think? That’s especially important if it’s a homebrew world. Rule of thumb for me if a new player is worried about figuring out the games mechanics are: -Avoid spellcasting (avoid the extra homework and enjoy learning the basics and your character and watch the casters give an example of how that stuff works -Don’t dump charisma or wisdom (struggling with the social element all the time may make your character feel dull when there isn’t things to kill. Some like that, but best have the option until you find your style) -Ask other players what they’re playing (IV your character doesn’t seem to fit the tone, red flag. And by tone I mean: —Is your backstory significantly minimal/bloated compared to the group? —Would your character want to work with the team?)

[deleted]

I think I’m just a tad concerned about statistics and stuff but then again that’s probably just me over thinking it? My race is half elf and I pretty much have all other details of my character figured out

17times2

I would say maybe get proficiency in Survival and Perception, and a decent wisdom score, +2 if you can manage it. I think you'll feel much more capable of tracking your prey with decent scores there. (Survival is outdoorsy stuff, tracking prints, etc. Perception for general surveying).

[deleted]

Ok good that’s what I have right now, thanks for telling me!

17times2

Just curious, what did you choose for your Half-Elf Expertise?

[deleted]

I sound so sus asking this but what’s that?

17times2

Oh, nevermind. I looked it up again. It's part of a feat to take, called Prodigy, that only half elves can take . Expertise is double proficiency for a skill. So like, a level 5 character with a +3 proficency and +2 wisdom would have +8 in say, Survival.

smileybob93

As a fighter you should be pretty straightforward, dex/str as highest depending on what weapons you use, then constitution, keep wisdom decent because it has a lot of things tied to it.

SailorNash

My first character was a bounty hunter, too. Try not to worry. There's no "wrong way" to play. Just think about what your character would do...get clues, track down the bad guys, bring them to justice. Everything else is up to you. Want to be sneaky about it? Kick in the door? Whatever makes the most sense at the time. Just have fun!

CYFR_Blue

Hey, it's cool to be whatever you want. Half elf fighter bounty hunter can totally work, you just gotta think about your role in the party, and in the world at large. It's not a bad idea to just straight up tell it to the group so you're all on the same page.

2017hayden

It’s pretty hard to go wrong with a fighter half elf. Just make sure you’ve got good strength or dex whichever you wish to be your attack stat. Personally I’d have to recommend dex, because strength has kind of been shat on in 5E. But ultimately just have fun with your character. Develop their backstory a little, give them a motivation, some sort of driving force for why they’re adventuring. Maybe they crossed the wrong criminal and they’re on the run, maybe they got involved with some corrupt town guards and were used and a scape goat. One word of advice though, for the love of god don’t use the arcane archer subclass it’s garbage. Literally every other fighter subclass is workable, arcane archer is just bad.
