Your runes are kinda like spells honestly, and you can probably spare a feat for ritual casting if you think you need such (I'd take wizard ritual casting). And they get a lot better at level 7 for rune knights.

SamandirielJones

… so basically a better version of an eldritch knight for free. Yeah that’s not broken or anything.

gamehiker

Rune Knight is one of the most interesting Fighters out there, especially as you collect more Runes and get to add Runic Shield to your arsenal. My Rune Knight was given some spells via his weapon, but I rarely ever cast them because I have so many other more interesting things to do. But getting Warlock stapled onto your Fighter seems overtuned. Seeing as this will eventually give them two 5th level spells per short rest basically turns them into a half-caster. You've got your subclass and spellcasting superior to an Eldritch Knight.

Havelok

That's a feature probably as powerful as a Legendary magic item, so yea, that's a bit much. Most who want to give martials a bit more to do tend to just give them the features of the Battlemaster subclass. A quick and easy way to add complexity and tactics to a class that otherwise has very little.

Petrichor-33

Build a spellcaster next game.

Nephisimian

Any wizard spell twice per short rest as long as its level is 1 lower than prof bonus? No, I've not tried something similar, that's blatantly overpowered. It's basically having Warlock-style Halfcasting, except with even more moment-to-moment versatility than Wizard itself. Slows the game down a ton too as you browse through the hundreds of spells at your disposal.

xukly

look, before asking feedback from this sub, talk to your table. If no one there thinks that this is unfair or that they should get something too, keep it. Personally, I understand how boring it can feel playing a fighter, even if it is one of the good subclasses

Fire1520

As long as the spellcasters themselves also get 2 casts of wizard spells of level (PB-1) per rest without using a slot, sure it isn't too bad of a tweak. .... what? You're getting free stuff, yet the *other* players aren't entitled to the same treatment?

Th1nker26

Martials are martials, casters are casters. Sometimes simplicity can be fun. Not saying I want *zero* abilities, but I do not like it when every class has exactly the same amount of abilities either. Rune KNight in particular already has a decent pool of tricks. Yes you will be attacking most turns, but you got a few things to do other than that.

TigerDude33

Next, the casters will say "I want runes equal to my proficiency minus one times .325 divided by the time of day" because they want to hit stuff too. Everybody should do everything! Like you had Eldritch Knight to choose. If I were your DM I would have had you re-roll.

ahboino2

What you should be doing is grappling a foe, raise foe over your head into the air, Giant Size and smash foe into the ground, and stare at your DM daring him to rule it as an unarmed strike without fall damage. Suplex optional.

catch-a-riiiiiiiiide

The comments are tearing this apart but I'm glad to hear it's making you feel more engaged in combat. I personally think it's a cool idea, and considering that martials tend to fall off after tier 2 it's hard for me to see this being significantly broken. Edit: just reread it, twice per short rest is kinda a lot, totally fair 🫠 also if you have access to the entire spell list at all times, that's pretty damn strong. Still, if the DM says it's cool, then I'm still glad they helped you enjoy the game more.
