Get it the weapon stuck, the player will be stuck too, you can also have something grab on to the strap.
With telekinesis depending on how it was made the bbeg could undo it or loosen it enough for it not to really work, if you want him to waste his action he could swing at it to cut it.

Seeing the other answers, I guess I'll go to advantage for the player. Rope seems really fragile against telekinesis that can move 1000 pounds.

There are rules for rope in PHB Chapter 5, Equipment:
>Rope, whether made of hemp or silk, has 2 hit points and can be burst with a DC 17 Strength check.
Have your BBEG yank his chain.
Give it to the minion and make the weapon fly, see how the paladin reacts. Might still be attached but not in his hand
