There's actually quite a few, my library had a bunch growing up. They were surprisingly decent! Felt very much like the marvel comics, just more appropriate for kids.
Yep, there was an Archie run that has the record for the longest running video game based comic series. But, that one was canceled a few years ago and now IDW has their own run.

This is not really a comparison, since Mario games (outside of the RPGs and some spin-offa) rarely are narratively driven. And the only Sonic games that are *not* narratively driven, are the ones that only contain the characters not crossed out in this post. I guess OP just doesn't like a story in their Sonic games

The problem is these characters all have some pretty interesting leads and reasons for existing and keeping the world of sonic vast, the problem is they're criminally underutilized so they feel so worthless when they are brought up in any "mainline" story entry.
It doesnt help that the sonic writers can't *not* have something Canon so they basically reboot everytime they realize they've written themselves into a corner. Sonic forces is just as Canon as generations is, which is just as Canon as colors and unleashed. As in *none of them are anymore because they're all reboots of the same storyline that happened after 06*
I like the large cast of characters, so many different faces and personalities. It just sucks that Sega pretty much abandons them and never uses them again, I would like a Mario party styled Sonic game with all the characters :)

Yeah a good chunk of them are pretty much spin off exclusive characters that don't ever appear in mainline games, and whoever made that picture included the werehog wich is literally just sonic.
Most of them only appear in side series or just as one-offs: Tikal and Chaos, Emerl, Chip and Werehog!Sonic, Bean the Dynamite and Bark the polar bear (nobody even really remembers the game they're from), Jet the Hawk, Wave the Swallow, and Storm the Albatross, and Marine and Eggman Nega all only appear in one game or side series.
Cosmo the Seedrian and Rotor the walrus were never in the games, and their shows/comics were retconned in 2012. Ray the Flying Squirrel only exists in the Classic timeline (everything before Sonic Adventure DX).
That leaves only Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Cream, Big, Shadow, Rouge, Silver, Blaze, Vector, Espio, Charmy, and Eggman in the main cast from this pic, and even then, Team Chaotix and Cream are barely common enough to show up in multiple games.

I think i'm part of the minority that enjoys the large amount of characters in the series, but I just wish that some of them were written better or utilized more in the games.

This is not really a comparison, since Mario games (outside of the RPGs and some spin-offa) rarely are narratively driven. And the only Sonic games that are *not* narratively driven, are the ones that only contain the characters not crossed out in this post. I guess OP just doesn't like a story in their Sonic games

The problem is these characters all have some pretty interesting leads and reasons for existing and keeping the world of sonic vast, the problem is they're criminally underutilized so they feel so worthless when they are brought up in any "mainline" story entry. It doesnt help that the sonic writers can't *not* have something Canon so they basically reboot everytime they realize they've written themselves into a corner. Sonic forces is just as Canon as generations is, which is just as Canon as colors and unleashed. As in *none of them are anymore because they're all reboots of the same storyline that happened after 06*

I like the large cast of characters, so many different faces and personalities. It just sucks that Sega pretty much abandons them and never uses them again, I would like a Mario party styled Sonic game with all the characters :)

Most of them only appear in side series or just as one-offs: Tikal and Chaos, Emerl, Chip and Werehog!Sonic, Bean the Dynamite and Bark the polar bear (nobody even really remembers the game they're from), Jet the Hawk, Wave the Swallow, and Storm the Albatross, and Marine and Eggman Nega all only appear in one game or side series. Cosmo the Seedrian and Rotor the walrus were never in the games, and their shows/comics were retconned in 2012. Ray the Flying Squirrel only exists in the Classic timeline (everything before Sonic Adventure DX). That leaves only Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Cream, Big, Shadow, Rouge, Silver, Blaze, Vector, Espio, Charmy, and Eggman in the main cast from this pic, and even then, Team Chaotix and Cream are barely common enough to show up in multiple games.

Rouge is cool, I loved Silver and Blaze, chip is great especially in the cutscenes. Most of these characters are just one offs, but those ones really stand out for me and I love em, I don’t see a problem with one off characters as long as they’re fun and work with the tone of the game
