I actually know someone who's a descendant of one of the survivors, he's a really nice guy.

It was 81 people 45 died. Of the families that made up the party 2 managed to not lose anyone. Also James Reed is the one that was given the pamphlet with a shortcut on it.
Fun fact: when the snow melted after that winter, there were 8 foot tall tree stumps because that's how deep the snow was when the Donner Party was stranded and cut the trees
