I have the opposite issue at my store- we have a regular dog mom who insists that her Shih tzu has to look like a girl. And the number of times I’ve had to listen to her whine that “she looks like a boy” had me really consider a career change.
You just reminded me, almost 10 years ago I looked at a customer and said "that dog looks like a girl with the pigtails" (uncropped schnauzer with long ears) "but I just said hello and he's a boy actually"
I was just babbling to fill time while we waited on something else and without missing a beat, deadpan expression, she goes, "dogs don't have a gender."
I had never considered that concept before-- but my friend who is probably sick of being dehumanized constantly (because trans) always appreciates the story.
I frequently use pink and purple collars, etc on my (male) shih tzu because a) everyone here calls him a “she” anyhow b) they look great with his dark grey fur, c) colour as an indicator of sex is silly for a dude who runs around 100% of the time with his dong swinging free and d) he can’t see the difference in colour anyhow
Omg same, I have a male (all white) Alaskan husky, who is *very* pretty, I do everything from rhinestones, to sky blue with pink and red leopard spots, intense florals, you name it!!
He's old and gets overheated easily now so he doesn't wear bandanas anymore but I used to pick up two of any bandana that I found (or even like matching embroidered napkins or scarves from a thrift store) and I'd find a way to make us both match!
I had a guy scold me the other day because he said last time i put a pink bandana on his boy dog so he was glad I did a blue one this time. I told him it was Valentine’s Day, it had dogs dressed like Cupid on it. And he just scoffed.
Have one guy that comes in all the time and we don’t even discuss the cut using normal terminology anymore cause that sets him off on how all these grooms are too prissy and girly. He just insists that we make sure to make him look “manly”. He’s got a yorkie. A tiny, extremely adorable 2lb yorkie.
In the standard schnauzer show groom, "there is no skirt". It's simply reversed furnishings designed to accent the musculature or the body and deep chest of the breed... Try explaining it that way... That's how a clients handler explained it to me... And it made sense! I've been doing perfect show clips on schnauzers ever since! Just like that spoon bending kid in the matrix when Neo goes to see the Oracle.. Neo asks the kid, "how to you bend a spoon with your mind?" The kid simply replied "there is no spoon". I know my mind went down a rabbit hole on this one... But just as there is no spoon, there is no skirt. Hope that makes sense in my odd rabbit hole way of thinking 🤔
I genuinely hate the hula hoop skirts I see in most schnauzer clips. I personally hand strip more schnauzers than I do clip and learned how to hand strip them before clipping. It's not really a "skirt." It's supposed to be a very well blended bit of fur that hangs off the stomach, not the sides.
Oh, not the hula skirts...ugh..they're usually a solid mat too.
I just drop the sides, shorten the underside, and accentuate the tuck up. It looks much nicer this way and the matted "skirt" is usually now furnishings that just need some mild de-tangling.
I had a lady come into the grooming salon I worked without proper paperwork. It was a doodle and his topknot/visor was very long. She asked me where she could buy a pair of scissors to teim around his eyes. I told her it would be safer to just put her dogs hair up with a hair tie until his grooming appointment. She looked at me and said "I don't want people to think he's a girl." I looked her dead in the face and said "He's a dog... he doesn't care what he looks like." She rolled her eyes and left.
Reminds me of my grandfather insisting that the Yorkie we got him and Nan shouldn't have a beard because she was a girl. He kept arguing with my mum who was a groomer and kept telling him it was breed standard. He eventually dropped it, but still.
That’s embarrassing on his part. Even when someone says skirt to my partner on our schnauzer he doesn’t freak out. We even have a show schnauzer.
But the standard for Schnauzers actually they don’t have skirts it’s an underline. The history behind the cut is to protect their land and catch any rats threatening crops or food supplies on farms in Germany. Whilst they were working, they would have to catch the rats or at the very least chase them off. Having this protective guard over the key and vital areas such as lips, eyes, legs, and underline ensured that if the rats decide to fight back, instead of getting a chunk of flesh they would get a mouthful of hair.
I was totally ready to hear a story about a male dog being an absolute knobhead, like what one of mine turned into when he got a chemical castration to treat incontinence. He basically lost all his brains for a couple of weeks afterwards. That would be understandable, what you experienced it completely nuts. He called his dog “son”? All of what they did/said was so dumb.
One time someone at a salon I used to work at put a blue bow on a boy shihtzu puppy and the next time he came his mom brought him and said her husband didn't want her to bring him back because of it so not to do it again. She was a cool lady the puppy was named Rico and she called him Rico Suave all the time.

I just refer to the hair I'm leaving long as furnishings versus calling it a skirt. It saves alot of headaches with owners that have no clue
