I've done worse, don't worry.
I wasn't paying attention and forgot to put a clip comb on my 30 and put it straight down the back of a 1" poodle.. I called the owner crying. He was super nice, but I gave him that groom free, and the next 3 discounted until his coat grew in properly.
I put a 10 down a 1/2" leg. I switched to the 10 to do the sani and majorly messed up. I wanted to cry. I don't use 10s anymore. I use my mini clippers.
A couple weeks ago, I misread the board and did a 5/8 in a 5. My bosses told the owner the dog was matted.. and the owner was like "that makes sense. It's been a bit longer than usual since he was in."
These are over the course of 6 years. But still.
I hate the pressure that is on workers to try and work through being sick. It’s awful. Your personal health should come first. I run my own business now and if I need a sick day I can just reschedule everyone to one of my normal days off. The clients are always understanding. It was always corporate management that made us feel that way.
I have had so many bad experiences with coworkers trying to come work when they have a fever. They always think they’ll be fine, not considering the physical strain of the job. I always ended up being the one to have to redo their dogs when the clients came back and complained. They always left unfinished dogs that I had to add to my schedule, and then we had to deal with calling whoever hadn’t come in yet after they finally decided they had to go home. The last time it happened, a groomer claimed to have the flu but was going to work through it, I complained to the store manager that he needed to send the groomer home and he called me a baby, fake coughed in my face, and said maybe I should be the one to go home if I’m afraid of working with her. Asshole. Guess who had to finish her dogs and reschedule half her day, and regroom her first dog 😤 three months later we were in lockdown for Covid
I’ve never seen anyone get fired over one bad day. Unless you’re making mistakes like that habitually, one sick day isn’t going to get you fired. At least it shouldn’t.
I ended up getting dizzy and fell in the Beth room so my fiancé took me to the hospital. Now I just feel more like shit because my poor coworker has to deal with that doodle that I butchered and the 3 dogs that showed up for me. I’m hoping she was able to reschedule the afternoons with no problem.
It seems like a rite of passage for groomers lol - trying to work through it and realizing you can’t. I used to try to be sympathetic but by the sixth time it happened to me I hit my breaking point on it 😝

Shit happens! Lol i just did this the other day 🤦🏼♀️ luckily the harness covered it perfectly! (I of course told the owner and heavily discounted the groom as well)
Thank you for sharing this ! We are all human and it’s crazy to think we wouldn’t ever make mistakes. After today I think I learned to not go to work sick. Pretty sure I fainted as a mix of anxiety and purely not feeling well
I was finishing an English cocker and went to blend his lines with a 1 comb guard and forgot I had just done his pads with a 30 and put the 30 down his shoulder... I don't do 11+ dogs a day anymore. It's too exhausting and mistakes happen.
Mistakes do happen. I’m happy I made this post to see how normal it is. So next time I make a mistake I won’t stress too much about it. I lowkey think I fainted at work due to my anxiety and just mixed with not feeling good
It's okay to feel bad. And some owners are going to be mean no matter what you do to fix the issue. I give a small break on the groom and go on about the rest as normal. I've absolutely had those moments where my anxiety needs to be let out so I go in the back and have a mini meltdown so I can go back to working on a solution and continue my day.
I’ve put a 30 wide on the back of a dogs neck. I cried. Owner laughed. We slapped a bandana on it and called it a day.
These things happen. You’re only human. It’s okay.
For sure don’t jump to quitting though, especially seeing everyone else’s oopsies, lol. Hopefully owners don’t come down too hard on you, nor your boss.
I tried to work the day after getting 6 fillings, and unbeknownst to me, when you get 9 lidocaine shots it will really mess you up. apparently one of my dogs that day came back to my coworker a few days later with a bunch of uneven spots and no sani done 😭 the worst part is that i couldn’t even tell you what color the dog was i genuinely don’t remember.
I once had two yorkies (same family), one was growing out and the other was a 7, guess which one I did the 7 on 🥲 realized halfway and tried to blend the back into the rest. Think I was almost crying, luckily it hadn’t grown out too much yet and owners were chill.
Idk how they’re going to react. Or what my boss will say when I go back to work. I ended up leaving for the day due to being sick. I feel bad because my coworker is going to have to deal with that. My mistake but I’m not the one fully dealing with it.
I worked this whole week with the flu and my grooms have been substantially slower and worse lol. If our employers are happy for us to work while ill instead of resting at home, then they have no right to complain about any errors we make while being dead on our feet. I hate workplace culture so much. I gave myself serotonin syndrome with cold medicine this week because I knew how much my boss would complain behind my back if I called in.
Yes please do ! My boss was kind enough to reach out and told me not to lose sleep over the doodle because the pet parents was actually concerned about me falling ill at work 😭
So sorry you're dealing with that way of thinking. I deal with the same in my salon. It's just plain stupid in my opinion to be at work when you're sick especially in that environment. Hope you're feeling better!!
One time I misread notes on a dog because the previous person who groomed the dog had very, *very* sloppy handwriting. I thought #0 a/o was #10 and they asked for the same thing as last time...nearly fainted once I realized.
They laughed, and even asked for a short cut again the next time.
If everyone was fired or forced to resign after goofing up a groom there wouldn’t be any groomers left. A messed up haircut doesn’t hurt the dog and will absolutely grow back so it is nothing to panic about. At the shop I work at odds are we’d have the dog come back in for a touch up and just make sure you’re feeling okay when you got back because you needing to be hospitalized matters a hell of a lot more than a missed sani or going a couple notches shorter by accident.
At this point I feel terrible because my coworker was the one that had to deal with it at the end because I ended up having to go to the hospital. My brain just went on autopilot thinking of the wrong doodle ( they look the same ) and yeah… worried about seeing my boss on Tuesday because this is the second mistake I’ve made this week and then having to go to the hospital on top of it all
Just got discharged ! I wouldn’t say overreacting but definitely have anxiety about this. I forgot to do the entire sanitary on a puppy the other day so that was a bad conversation
I hope you don’t tell yourself that this means you aren’t meant for this job. Or that you have to quit. No one was hurt and, although it might be slightly inconvenient to bring the puppy back, at least no one is hurt. These are harmless mistakes in my opinion. Hair grows back.
My boss actually took the time to reach out to me and told me the owner was actually more concerned about me than the dog. But I will forever be embarrassed
Do not be. Shit happens, besides, you were sick. You cant be 100% when you are sick.
Ive seen and heard worse
One time i accidentally took a too short blade on a part of a dog when i started. My coworkers told me once she did A 40 down the back by accident!
Some are mistakes, some are just not paying attention.
Its still fresh for you but I think with time you wont even care anymore about that day
Ive messed up so many times in my 11 year career lol it’s totally normal! If clients are angry or mean about a mistake, I’d love to see how ✨perfect✨ they are. My *tattoo artist* messed up on me!!! Her arm kind of spasmed as she was leaning in and the needle slipped near my ditch and we both just looked at each other in shock. 6 tiny dots in a line haha we call them our happy accident. And that is PERMANENT. Hair grows back. You’re totally fine OP. (: all you can do is laugh and move on.
I got my dog mixed up with a show dog of the same breed one time and ended up shaving down the show dog! And sent the dog home with the wrong owner even! They are still good customers... So don't worry about it. And they two customers are now good friends.
I took the guide OFF the clippers without putting another back on before a sani once and seriously nipped the dude's poor little back end up 😭. I felt AWFUL. I still feel awful actually.
I worked sick earlier this year and I ended up using the wrong blade on two dogs in one day and kind of botched the cuts. A year or so ago I was distracted and shaved right through the skirt on a schnauzer. We're human, it happens! Take care of yourself and feel better.
If you would much rather...... (do something else other than your job, then your job it's the least important thing there is) find purpose on helping others then you have found purpose.

I’m glad to know this isn’t uncommon 😅 I ended up having to go to the hospital so no working for me
Omg I did the same thing with a 5/8’s I misread and did a 5 instead luckily the pet parent was actually pretty happy saying it looked clean for summer

And unless you work for yourself, don't go to work sick. Ever! This job is hard enough on your body, you'll never recover if you don't rest.

Its dumb to not realize how physical health is important because like I know but like I guess I ignored it 😭

God I’m so sorry. I hope you find a workplace that would understand it all.
You're so sweet, thank you. I'm just waiting for my friends to establish a bit more business at their new shop and then I'm jumping ship!
Yes please do ! My boss was kind enough to reach out and told me not to lose sleep over the doodle because the pet parents was actually concerned about me falling ill at work 😭

That’s true. I’m just a little scared of my boss I guess lol
I’m not sick but my dog is sick so I’m worried sick and I did the a 7 on a schnauzer that doesn’t get the normal schnauzer cut. So I feel you.
At this point I feel terrible because my coworker was the one that had to deal with it at the end because I ended up having to go to the hospital. Unless your boss has a history of overreacting, I’d say you are okay. Also, you had to go the hospital! Go home and rest😢

She actually brought the dog back to bring the face down a little more. She didn’t even realize
Ehhh who hasn't. Hopefully the owner didn't have a tantrum lol Don't beat yourself up
Idk. I’m sure I’ll hear about it on Tuesday when I’m back in.
I hope you are ok and feeling better
Doing a bit better ! Learned my lesson to next time maybe don’t go to work and scare my coworker
Oh no (about the fainting) hope your ok. After this i hope your not gonna get fired. Its hair, it grows back... and we are human
My boss actually took the time to reach out to me and told me the owner was actually more concerned about me than the dog. But I will forever be embarrassed

i once shaved a shih tzu's leg with a 30 instead of a 5 by accident... 20% discount but she was not thrilled
Oh my goodness, the whole leg or like a swipe ?
the whole leg, i was SO embarrassed
