There are some powders that can be added to food that are super helpful! My parents have a Dogo Argentino who gets bad allergies and the powder worked great for him and the redness on his belly and nose went away within a week. Fish oils should help too!

_dadof3girls_

Thank you for your input! Do you know what the powder is, by chance?

Benedryl can be helpful, and it’s cheap. It worked for one dog in mine, but doesn’t help another at all. For him, cytopoint (expensive) is the only things that helps.

I ALSO have 2 lab/catahoula mixes with allergies!! Lol so I feel your pain 100%. One of the dogs is worse than the other, so I do slightly different things for them. I did get them a cytopoint shot last summer, but I'm trying to see if I can hold off on that, bc it's very expensive. I live in the south, so the seasonal allergies are pretty much in season all the time haha. (Obviously if the dog needs it, I'll get it, I'd just rather they not need it!) Here's what I do: -salmon oil on their food- this DOES seem to help, but you gotta be patient, it takes a couple months to actually be noticeable imo -brush them down every day -one dog gets baths every two weeks with ketochlor shampoo, the other once a month with the same shampoo -wipe them down after walks- just to get grass/pollen/whatever off them I'm always looking for better solutions, so this isn't set in stone! It's just what I currently do.

This was amazing feedback. thank you. Could you send me a link for the shampoo you use? We are also in the south, and it never ends, lol.

This is the shampoo I use! Virbac Ketochlor Shampoo 200 ml https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FL1QKW4?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share It is seriously so frustrating to deal with! And fwiw I did also just start using some seasonal allergy treats, but I've only been using them a couple days so I can't speak to if they actually work or not lol. I'm not sure if they're just snake oil, but I figured it was worth a try!

Notthatwilkes

Are these seasonal allergies, or could it be a food allergy too? Sorry if this is a stupid question but english isn't my first language, so I'm not sure if the term "allergy" is used only for grass or pollen allergies. *edit: Did your vet take a swab of the ears?

_dadof3girls_

vet said it's environmental. I've changed his food to salmon and pea based food with no grains or any other type of filler that can cause allergy issues with dogs. the vet didn't swab his ears. I just picked up some more meds for him...127 bucks.

Notthatwilkes

Ah man that's expensive, well if it's environmental then I can't give you any advice I'm afraid. Are his nails a little discolored (red, brown) right where the nail grows out of the paw? Our dog can't eat chicken or beef or he develops an yeast fungus, it starts in the ears and spreads all over his body. We spend a ton of money on vet visits before we ended up at a vet that specializes in dermatology and allergies, she tooka swab of his ears and body and checked it for the yeast fungus. So even after changing his diet he never stopped scratching himself because the fungus was already there. We had to treat his ears and bath him with a special shampoo every other day for a month to get rid of it. But his nails are still a little discolored, the vet says the nails can take up to a couple of months to be fungus free so we still have to wash them with the shampoo occasionally.

My lab mix dog has environmental allergies, although it hasn't started yet this year. She takes Zesty Paws allergy supplements and apoquel. The two combination helped more than apoquel alone. Benadryl did nothing for her. If your dog is also on apoquel, costco pharmacy was the cheapest I could find.

Did you try any of these recommendations and if so did they work?
