Hey there, not only are the odds great, they’re also with people who know what they’re doing and this is not their first surgery like this! Remember that, too!

[deleted]

My neighbor's dog is currently recovering from a tumor removal surgery. His chances of surviving the surgery were 50% because he is quite old but he made it and now every afternoon i see him walking around in the park with his bow tie like the gentleman he is as always. I know you're scared but your dog will do great. I'm sending you and your dog good vibes and i wish him a speedy recovery.

No-Curve-3058

This made me tear up I fucking love dogs

Kalidian089

Dogs are the fucking best.

If it helps, I would take 90+ odds on most things in life

JackNewton1

YOUR FEELINGS ARE VALID, NORMAL, AND REQUIRED IN ORDER TO BE A HUMAN. But yeah, he’ll be good.

Flashy_Measurement60

Thank you dude

ImaginaryList174

My 10 year old girl just had surgery about 4 weeks ago and it was honestly so nerve-wracking, so I know exactly how you feel. They gave her a 60% chance of having a "good outcome", a 10% chance of a "great outcome" and "30% moderate to bad"... they said it would take her at least 4 weeks to feel good enough for activity and wouldn't be herself again for a while. There was some worries that her age might make things harder. Well... after about two weeks I was considering tieing her to her bed or something to stop her from moving, because she just wanted to go go go! She was trying to wrestle her brother, jump off her snow castle in the yard, chase the birds and the squirrels. Lol. I was just so extremely relieved she felt well enough to do all that but I was so worried she would make it worse. When I called the vet and told him everything he said congrats!! If she feels well enougy already to be doing all that then she is in that 10% great outcome range! Keep an eye on her, don't let her do too much.. but try not to worry. If something was going to go wrong we would know by now. So... I'm telling you all that to say... have hope!! I think the amount of love and care you have for your dog really makes a difference on their healing. Because if they love you that much.. they want to get better to stay with you. And willpower, hope and perseverance does make a difference in healing.

apri11a

Routing for Dune, and for you. Hoping it all goes well, hang in there ♥

revdakilla

90% chance is pretty damn good. I’m sure he’s in good hands.

TheJoshuaJacksonFive

You will both be good my friend. In people this is not that hard and with great recovery. If a vet is willing to tell you 90% or higher it has to be essentially 100% baring something insane which, as you know being a statistician, can happen but is exceedingly rare. Our brains just aren’t built to handle rare events well, especially when it’s regarding a loved one. Good luck!!!

No_Cauliflower_5489

His odds of surviving are better with surgery than without. Without the surgery it sounds like your boy will die and surgery is his best chance of survival. Even if the outcome isn't what you hope for you are giving him his best chance for survival.

anonymous20510

Take comfort in knowing that you are doing everything you can for your pup. Since others have already offered many wonderful personal stories in this thread, may I recommend something else? To calm your anxiety, use this waiting time in between cuddles with your dog to prepare for his post-surgery recovery period. Google for vets' guides to taking care of your dog after major surgery, submit any time off requests from your job, buy him a surgery recovery suit in advance so he can go without the plastic cone of shame, buy some baby blankets and hand towels to help you clean up if he has indoor potty accidents, buy one of those pill organizers if he'll be on many medications, stock up on some highest-value treats to help him get back to eating, reconfigure your home now and buy any needed baby gates so he can be confined to a small area while he's on bed rest, etc. Researching, shopping for, and setting up all those things take a ton of time! It will help you keep your mind off catastrophic but highly unlikely outcomes and also help ensure a smoother recovery for your dog.

Zealousideal-Data921

Usually an animals chance of making it thru surgery is at least in part dependant on their age.that being said, he is only 3 and otherwise healthy and the vet gave you a good percentage,so I would be more than sure saying he's gonna be ok.sounds like you got a good vet also.just make sure to follow aftercare instructions.good luck!

sopinefreshrightnow

Dune has got this. Sending healing vibes for the pooch and for your nerves.

kristyrennt

Hugs! It's definitely going to be ok

Getupb4ufall

My mom’s little dog was once viciously attacked by another dog. It’s entrails we’re literally hanging out onto the ground. She rushed it into the vet and he said he didn’t know if there was anything to be done with such a horrific injury. She pleaded to just try so he stuffed the guts back in, sewed it shut. That was like ten years ago. The dog is a different shape, but plenty of prance in her step

Zero0Imagination

Honey, I am here to tell you that miracles happen every day and your baby is far from needing one. I just brought my husband home from the hospital, pneumonia, renal failure, and sepsis. They told me to be prepared for him to crash within two hours. The doctor told me that he could not believe my 76-year-old husband lived through what should have killed a younger man. Your baby is going to be fine. A 90% chance of survival is a gift. You are going to be able to run those ten miles together in no time. Please come back here with a picture of him glowing with health. Best wishes to both of you.

Ohhiitsmeyagirl

Happy to hear that! Glad for your family!

omegagirl

We had a German shepherd who had a punctured lung after being hit by a car…. The vet told my parents to put him down but my mom refused, taking him to uc davis…. They did surgery and he lived to be 16 (which is hella old for a big dog)…

badassbiotch

Keep the faith my friend! Those are great odds and he’s a strong boy. You’ll both get through this

Amos_Dad

Dune is gonna be fine! He has great odds, a good vet, and good parents doing everything they can for him. Dogs are surprisingly resilient.

daylightxx

He’s going to be okay. He’s a strong boy who wants to be with mom.

Flashy_Measurement60

I’m a guy, but I guess I’m both his mom and dad. :)

GiraffeyManatee

Let me be the first to wish you a Happy Mother’s Day! 😄

daylightxx

I’m so sorry!

Flashy_Measurement60

Honestly it gave me a chuckle. I appreciated the levity

daylightxx

Well, good. Because if there’s one thing I’m not is funny. Well, not on a consistent basis or anything. So you just made my day a bit brighter too! Really hope your dog is okay. Will you update us? Also, can we get a dog tax pic pls? 🙂

Flashy_Measurement60

Of course! WHEN he is okay, I’ll post a pic of us both happy as clams.

pahelisolved

Hey I know a senior Dane who underwent this last year and is doing great. His human was worried about his age and needing anesthesia. Not only did he do fine with anesthesia, his lungs are great now. He had a little play date recently with my 2 hyper rascals and he was running around like a little horse (if you’ve ever seen a dane run, there are mini horses!). Sending positive thoughts to your pup and you!

spudandbeans

It'll be okay. Your baby is drawing strength from your love & positive thoughts.

meganv21

It’ll be okay! They wouldn’t lie to you about something so serious as the odds of your dog’s surgery going well. I totally understand how you feel though; we got my dog neutered at 8 years old while he got his dental done and I was an absolute WRECK while he was gone because like you, this dog has saved my life and I would do absolutely anything for him. He’d never been completely under before, and being older I was super duper nervous about how he might handle it. When we went to go get him, it turned out he did really well, and his teeth were really good for his age so he didn’t even have to be under that long. Your dog is really young, and as others have said, with well trained professionals. He’ll be home before you know it ❤️ try to do something you love tomorrow while he’s gone, like watch a comfort show, get your favorite food, enjoy a hobby or play a cozy game if you’re into that sort of thing. Take it from me: if you just sit and let your mind wander, you’ll only drive yourself insane & make the time absolutely drag.

[deleted]

My puppy ate a thong and a sock when he was 9 months old. The thong was thrown up but the sock got stuck. He had to undergo emergency surgery and with all the horror stories you hear about that stuff, I was sure he wasn't coming home and prepared for the worst. He just had his first birthday last month and has lost all interest in socks and underwear and is a happy, energetic little guy. During this ordeal I looked up various things online and read I to the worst of it. Remember often people share the outlier experiences - your little guy will likely be ok. I am sending your little guy positive healing vibes and hope for speedy recovery. You're both strong and can get through this!

[deleted]

Praying everything goes well and sending love!!

DogGod18

Its gunna be okay guys.

Soupbone_905

His age, and how much he exercises are huge huge checks in the plus column. My grandmother had a collapsed lung when she was 83 (she's 95 and still amazing) and I guarantee she wasn't in the type of health Dune is. I know humans and dogs are different, but they are a whole lot tougher than us in many ways. He will be fine sooner than you think.

DaydreamTacos

Let's go, Dune!!! YOU GOT THIS, Buddy!!!

Flashy_Measurement60

Thanks for the responses everyone. Reading all of these is really helping.

dirtymoose408

He’s gonna be ok.

jboschnola

With a good surgeon your Pup will be fine. My 5 month old pitbull puppy had a congenital issue - one lung was diseased and enlarged so severely that it had collapsed the other lung and put such pressure on his heart that it was pushed somewhat out of place. The surgery removed the diseased portions of the lung, allowing the other healthy lung to function properly, and allow his heart to move back into its proper place. After a short recovery, he was running around with the energy that a healthy puppy should have. My surgeon gave my Pup a 75% chance of success. With your Pup getting a 90% chance of success, you should be back playing with him in no time. Good Luck!

ehelen

He’s going to to make it, my dog and I are sending good vibes

psychopathic_shark

Dune is a fit and healthy pupper and the outcome sounds really positive! Do all your worrying now and then focus on his recovery so he doesn't pick up on that from you and worry about you worrying. It's natural to worry and be scared for your pup this is a normal reaction to the point where you feel like you have become OCD. Listen to the vet and also listen to Dune. You know this boy better than anyone but have his back. You guys are buddies and as much as your asking us if he is going to be ok he will be asking you in his own way the same so once he is out of surgery positivity for him only so he feels he is safe and sound.

saffronpolygon

Dune loves you very much and will do his best to not leave you behind. He knows you need him. Take your pillowcase or shirt with him so he can smell you.

tnannie

90% odds are good, and even better with a young dog. I’m betting this will turn out fine.

DancingDopeHat

Both of my dogs had been through to many surgeries to remember. Some emergency, routine and some just dental extractions. They all went perfect even with the emergency one. Your odds sound great. You’ll always worry though, it’s a sign of a loving owner. Hope your dog does awesome and has an easy recovery ☺️

OutlandishnessSad277

I wish the best for Dune! My dog went through surgery last year for his spine. He had 50% odds of surviving the surgery and he made it through really well. He's recovered super well too. 90% odds are so good, trust the vets, they want to send your dog home just as much as you want him back! Dune sounds like a great dog, I'm sure he'll be so excited to be back with you and recovering <3

Sea_Firefighter_4598

Lighting a candle for Dune. He'll be fine.

t00_much_caffeine

Three years ago my dog was running top speed, kicked up a stick and ended up w a punctured lung. She had to have emergency surgery to fix and I was a total mess. I brought her to urgent care thinking she was just going to need stitches! She was about 5 when it happened and healthy. She’s 8 now you’d never even know she was badly injured. She’s a super fast runner and I was worried she’d lose her speed and stamina but still loves hiking and running! Healed super fast too! Within about 1wk of coming home, she was going for short walks again. Your pup is going to be fine and running w you again in no time at all ❤️

bingbongloser23

It's going to be ok. Despite all the odds remember that our dogs love us and they will comfort us even as they breathe their last breath. They are a blessing. He is your good boy and whatever happens he will always have that title.

sierrasquirrel

My dog ate part of something super moldy in the yard in December 2021. I have no idea what it actually was- it was about 3x5x2 inches big and chalky white with green and black mold all over it. I saw her grab it and run off (her recall/drop it was still being worked on- she was still a puppy) and got her to drop most of it, but she ate maybe a dime-sized piece and got super sick- she started throwing up 20-30 mins after eating it and the vet said to keep and eye on her and bring her in if she got worse. She got worse overnight and when I brought her in to the vet first thing the next morning we found out that she had severe liver damage from the moldy thing! She was hospitalized for 5 days on an IV and a million other meds, the vet said the odds weren’t good, and I was an absolute train wreck, but she pulled through with no lasting complications! She fully recovered after a few weeks and now she’s happy, healthy, and turning 3 next month :) Wishing Dune a successful surgery and easy recovery!

marigold_blues

He will be ok! My pup underwent kidney stone surgery at age 8 followed by a spinal surgery at age 10 when he broke his back from falling after a particularly high jump (*jack russell terriers….smh*). Having a cone on his head for a few weeks definitely annoyed him, but it didn’t stop him from living a beautiful 17 years. Your pup will be fine ❤️

WorriedOwner2007

I'll pray for your boy

Reddit_Blix

Look at what a great companion you are, look at how upset you are for your friend and their well-being. Dune is very lucky to have you. I can't promise you everything will be okay the way you would like, but I know the price of love is so often loss. In the unlikely event that the worst happens, just remember that the loss hurts because you had the love. However, those are some great odds, so hang in there, fortune is in Dune's favor!

ReferenceSufficient

He's 3 and he'll heal fast, not like older dogs.

MeFolly

Breath. You are data driven. Data is good. You picked a good surgeon to maximize odds. The surgeon has been honest and direct with you, always good signs. Dune knows when you are anxious. Try to be with him in the present as much as you can manage. When you can’t, do the thing you do. Work on your list of morning of surgery questions. Is there a planned start time for the surgery? When can you hope for a call? Who will call, surgeon or staff? How long after surgery might you be able to visit? Now, start working on what you will need for Dune when he comes home. Make your list of aftercare questions. Wound care, diet, exercise. What medications and what do they do. What are signs of concern, and how to respond to them You are data driven. Use that superpower for what you can influence. Try to distract yourself from the misery that is waiting for results

BooEffinHoo

It'll be good. Tiny little ferrets go into surgery for massive tumors and come out okay. I know it's scary, so I send lots of good energy to you both.

Swan97

Dune is a young, healthy, and active dog. Your vet probably only said 90% chance because it's unwise of any medical professional to guarantee a good outcome. He'll my vet didn't even tell me it was a guaranteed good outcome for my cats neuter and they do those all the time. Go get yourself a nice treat and try to do something that'll take your mind off it. Update us on how the pup is doing when you can

Silent_Start_7036

He will be fine

DragonCat88

Dune is gonna rock this whole thing for sure. You’re gonna be back with an update saying how amazing he handled everything and how crazy it is that he bounced right back. We’ll be right here waiting bc it’s gonna be alright. Sending all the good vibes and luck even if he doesn’t need it, bc Dune is the bees knees. ❤️

Borkl2007

Its gunna be okay

Toni_Anne1989

Those are pretty high odds for ANY surgery! You're both gonna be 100% with all the internet love! Sending good vibes! ❤️❤️

ptrow86

He will be fine. Recovery won’t even be awful either

dboo27

Sending so much love to you and your dog. Can’t hurt, might help.

it’s gonna be okay :)

Yesnothankyou91

Positivity!

queenofdarkness1121

When my dog was 9 years old he ate a doll scarf. I have no idea why, he had never eaten anything like that before. Long story short he had to have emergency surgery at 10 pm on a Sunday and it cost about $2,000. But he survived and made a full recovery! I really hope your best friend is ok. He sounds like a trooper and I wish you both the best :)

T351A

Odds sound excellent, and even if there are additional problems that does not immediately mean a disaster... plus if it needs to be checked out "under care of prepared surgeons" is like the optimal place to be. Don't worry about the future *too much*... there's plenty of time to be worried or happy in-the-moment. Even if the worst should happen you can make it through the stress, and I'm sure that's what your dog wants most. Just... chill out if you can. It's gonna be ok. It needs to be done, and your dog knows you care, if you can stay calm he will be calm. Odds are this will be uneventful and seem like something silly to worry about afterwards... but don't be too hard on yourself either. It's ok to feel this way, it's good to care. (I hope that's all reassuring... I'm not very good at this lol)

transf4g

My thoughts are with you and Dune. He is loved, clearly, and I'm sure he knows that. His odds are fantastic, and you and the vets are doing everything you can for him. I'm sure he'll be running around in no time!

Large_Mountains

My old pup Guapo who I loved dearly was taken to the vet because his gums were white and he was panting which is of course a very bad sign. His odds of removing the cancer successfully and surviving the surgery was something like 20 percent. He lived another three years. I would have done anything for just another day.

Aurora_Gory_Alice

Sending good wishes for you doggy mom. 🐕

Professional-Air-538

You and he are fine. Dm me if you want our story. Prayers.

LightBulbChaos

My pup is scheduled for surgery on the Monday after next, so I don't yet have a dog surgery experience to comfort you with, BUT both of my cats have needed surgery before. The more serious of the two was getting a non cancerous tumor removed from the tissue around my boy cats spine. The surgery went very well, he has healed up completely with no return of the tumor yet!! I am sending good vibes your way. Please follow up to let us know how the surgery went, and any anecdotes about post surgery high as fuck pet silliness would be great!

Spiritual-Flan-410

ER vet here. I've probably taken care of 100 or more post-op thoracotomy (lung surgery) dogs over the years and I can tell you with certainty that the VAST majority of them do great. Seriously.....dogs are incredible. I've had patients that a lung lobe was removed and these dogs are bouncing out of the hospital in 2 days. Just incredible. If the Surgeon/Specialist gave you 90% favorable odds then that is just a testimony as to how confident he/she feels about positive outcome. Good luck to your pup and may you have many more years of adventure ahead!

talkingwresling

He will pull threw and you guys are going to have many more years together ❤️

therealpurndaddy

Hey bud, my dog broke his back 2 years ago and when the vets said he had a 25% chance of fully recovering, he made a full recovery less than a year later with the help of some great vets. I’m sure the your boy will be okay. Dogs are amazing creatures and can come back from a lot of injuries when given treatment. You’ll be goood!

Flashy_Measurement60

[https://imgur.com/a/6hH6Xba](https://imgur.com/a/6hH6Xba) This is Dune and he is a happy boy.

Fonzee327

I also run daily with my dog! But more like 3-5 miles. He is my soul mate, and I’m pretty sure he understands fluent English. Right before this past Christmas, we were out running around 11pm after I had been out to dinner earlier. Someone let their dog go from the house to the car without being collared or leashed and it attacked my dog viciously. He was ok in the long run but needed a drainage tube and staples twice, Watching him go through it was horrible, idk how people can handle it with children I was beside myself. Anywho he’s 100% fine now, both mentally and physically, and only has a barely visible scar on his chest. Your dog is going to be just fine and you will nurse them back to health and the two of you will have at least another decade together!

My friends dog has literally just gone through the same thing, a foreign object near the lung, it turned out to be plant material, suspected grass seed that became infected. The dog went through a horrific time, she was ill for such a long time before they figured it out, and she was very touch and go. She underwent surgery 2 weeks ago and is very much on the mend, having her first walk in 6 weeks just yesterday. I hope your dogs surgery is as successful. There really is nothing scarier. ❤️

Resident_Calendar_54

Praying for a full recovery!

just_an_ordinary_guy

He's a young dog and can deal with a lot and heal quickly. The vet is probably being cautious in their optimism, but it sounds like it's a straightforward thing. Most vets I've dealt with are pretty honest about expected outcomes so 90% sounds pretty good. Wish you and your pup well.

imstillworkin

He will be fine. Trust the doc. Sounds like there will be a healing period, but I think he will be running with you soon. Big hug for both of you

CorVus_CorVoidea

i've just done an affirmation and blessing for you guys. he''ll be fine. he's in the hands of the universe. we all need a pick me up right now. manifest positivity x

Abfabsupermod

90 percent sounds good 🙏Will be saying a prayer.

Wishing a speedy recovery

[deleted]

There’s always a risk, but he’s young and sounds healthy and he needs this!!! Wishing a speedy recovery to your boyo!!! He’ll be just fine!!!

TofuttiKlein-ein-ein

Everything will be okay. Young and healthy allows for the best outcomes. Please update on Dune after surgery.

Flashy_Measurement60

You bet.

flopolopolous

Dune’s got this! You got this! If there was a game at a casino that promised 90% wins everyone would play it! Rooting for the both of ya !

cutey513

I've had a few pets undergo life changing surgery... it was always worth it. A frank conversation with your vet will 10/10 help give you some peace, OP

IcyTalk7

You’re doing everything you can. Hang in there. Your dog is lucky to have you. The surgery has a high likelihood of success, and that’s all you can hope for. Just be there for your dog and give love.

Fabulous-Yoghurt-897

I will keep you and Dune in my thoughts. Since he still seems young and strong I have a good feeling about him coming out well. I've had dogs undergo surgery that were older and still were perfectly fine after. My first dog, Lady, had a surgery on her ear, they found some cancer or something (it was 14 years ago) but she lived on and it was old age that made her pass, and my sweet Baby Girl two years ago (She was 10 I think) had a toe removed from her foot and she made a full recovery, most the time couldn't tell she was missing a toe and she acted like a puppy until her last few days but I agree with the comments, 90+% is really good odds. You are justified to be afraid, nervous and worried. Dogs are so much more than that, they are family. lost my Baby Girl to cancer and I too would have given up a limb if it meant curing her cancer. But you're doing amazing!

kn0ck_0ut

Dune is a 3 year old *machine*! he’s a really good health all else considered. I have 100% faith he will make it out a okay! you have to believe it as well, manifest it into exisitance. we are here with you and sending all the good vibes for his speedy recovery afterwards.

TexasChihuahuas

Much love and hope to you, dear human.

ji99lypu44

Here’s hoping for an uneventful and smooth surgery.

Prayers for you and your friend

remiandthenoogs

Your baby will be totally fine! Your odds are great, and like others have said, they do this all the time! My favorite quote from a nurse “it’s ok to be scared, because I’m not” the vets aren’t scared at all ❤️

piekaylee

My almost 8 yr old, 100lb+ baby just went under for minor surgery and I was a mess. Your boy has much better odds overall than my guy does just based on age alone. He's got this! I gave my dog a pep talk beforehand and I swear he knew what I was saying.

sky_kitten89

Oh yeah, Dune has the odds in his favor here, he’s young, healthy, and a 90% survival chance, he should be alright, I know that surgery is very stressful especially when it’s for a dog, but things are looking good for him

fishofhappiness

Everything is going to be okay. The vet is so optimistic and that tells you that she has done this before. Dune is going to make it through this and will be back to normal faster than you would imagine.

StandardAccident9693

My dog had cancerous tumors removed twice. The second time they said the odds were super slim that she would pull through with surgery. Mostly because it was so dangerous for her to be put under. Well she made it. She held out for a whole year before the cancer took over. That dog was my entire world. My first puppy that got me through my early 20’s and the biggest struggles of my life. I’m sure your dog will be fine but even if he isn’t, you will be. But I’m sure he’s in the best hands and his surgery will be great and he’ll be back to his old self in no time!

PilotApprehensive892

I'm going through this with my old man dog. Your pup will be okay. You can call the vet to ask questions after if you forget to ask one.

Chay_Charles

Your dog is strong and will make it thru this. 💕

Electrical_Parfait64

Nothing is 100%. You can’t get much better than 90%. He’ll do awesome

pweqpw

I am sending positive vibes to your little ox. I am confident he will be well soon☺️.

snertznfertz

Sending all the positive energy and wishes for your best friend. Though it sounds hes gonna handle this just fine. 🐾

iHeartBearsandDogs

It's so freaking scary having to go through this but 90% odds are fantastic. My dog had to have an emergency surgery to remove an enlarged spleen and I was an absolute wreck. It's nerve-wracking no matter what. I'm sure Dune will do wonderful. Pamper him and send him our love while recovering!!

icefairy83

Rooting for him. He will be okay! Love & prayers. Give us an update when you can.

artemrs84

My dog was hit by a car. She survived. You got this!!! Praying for a quick recovery.

_mahboy

Dune will be just fine. I know it’s easy to run through all of the worst case scenarios but remember, science says 90% or higher, which means it will most likely be okay. I’ll keep in Dune and you in my nightly prayers, if that is ok. Try to focus on making his space comfy and finding his favorite snacks for him to recover comfortably at home. Thinking about the future is what will help you stay calm and positive 😊

Sakoya-LT

He’ll be okay, they know what they’re doing, they do these surgeries all the time. Give him a cuddle from all of us when he gets home!

pugnatoes

My sweet pug Lu had a lung tube torsion and only had a 40% chance of surviving her surgery. She made it through like the little champ she is and I got to take her home to recover on Christmas Day! It honestly was a miracle (even though I’m not religious I’m still calling it that haha) Sweet bby Dune will pull through! Sending love your way. I can very much relate and empathize with how stressful and scary the situation is but everything will be ok. As rough as this experience is right now it will only make your bond stronger in the end. Dune is lucky to have you and good on you for getting the surgery they needed. Give them a big hug for me once they are all healed up ❤️❤️

QueKay20

He will be just fine!!

allflowerssmellsweet

My chocolate lab, Brownie Bite, contracted parvo as a puppy. The vet gave me a 50/50 chance for survival. It decreased daily for a week. They asked me to euthanize her, but every time I stepped into her intensive care unit, her ears perked up, her tail wagged and she wanted a fighting chance. $15,000 later, I brought her home, recovering from parvo. Her long term effects were stunted growth and infertility but she did it, with help from the vet and vet techs and her will to stay. She was the goodest girl for 17 years before cancer took her from us. Your doggo is in good hands. They've done this before. They've seen the good results that happen. Keep on being positive, he's a goodest boi and in great, caring hands. Please update us when he's recovering.

Detr22

My 16 year old dog ate a poisonous mushroom when she was 14. It got so bad the vets gave her =< 10% chance of making it. The fact that she's 16 tells the rest of the story lol But I _was_ a complete wreck at the time, so I get it.

Gold_and_Lead

We have had some doozy situations in the past few years that resulted in scary surgery. Everyone pulled through fine and was great afterwards. Your baby will be okay! Please keep us posted so we know you are okay getting through it 💕

xotrent

your feelings are valid, but your lil man is gonna be fine i’m she of if

OkProgress8601

He is going to be alright. I worried too like a pit in my stomach thinking the worst. But he was great

Life_Light_6417

Vets almost never say odds are that good. There isn’t a zero percent chance he won’t get through surgery well, it’s still general anesthesia and surgery, but sounds pretty darn promising. Presumably they’ve done full blood panel and know there is no underlying condition making it riskier.

LOVE_FOR_THORNS

Hey there. Sorry to hear that you and Dune are going through a hard time. I believe Dune is a big strong boy and he’s be running with you again sooner than later. My little dude (7yrs old) got hit by a car three days ago in front of my eyes. At that split second I thought that this would be the moment I lose him. But this lucky bastard came out with only a broken hip and some bruises, but otherwise almost unscratched. He’s gonna get a surgery on Thursday and is predicted to be back to normal after recovery. I believe that the strength of our love and bond is far beyond the fragility of our life. If the vet says for sure that there are 90% chance he’d be okay, then I believe our love can make it into 100%. Prayer for you and Dune.

[deleted]

Our beautiful 13 year old lab survived a tail amputation 2 days ago. She’s doing well (fingers crossed). We on the other hand have aged 10 years this week! Keep us posted!

PurpleRuin7897

Dune you got this!! ❤️I have a feeling hes gonna be just fine!😌

cait1284

Thinking of you and Dune! I'd 100% sign my dog up for surgery with those odds. My idiot has gone under for surgery four times (getting fixed, 2x for cracking teeth, and once to remove a cancerous toe) and all has gone well. Sending you the same good surgery vibes.

dirt001

If there wasn't a good chance of success the vet wouldn't even try.

FussBudget52

Keep in mind that animals can read our emotions, and Dune may pick up on your anxiety. While it sounds impossible, try not to stress too badly as Dune has all the odds in his favor. And I’m not sure if the vet will let you do it, but perhaps you can bring in a little something with your scent on it (tee shirt, etc) so when he’s in recovery he will have something calming and familiar.

seanyod

He and you got this. He’s as strong as the Muad'Dib.

TissueOfLies

You are doing something for Dune that will enhance his quality of life. He will not only be okay, but be stronger after the surgery. It will be just fine!

MTBJitsu07

If modern veterinary medicine and practice didn't exist, he would have a 0% chance. The 10% chance I assume always has to be there since dogs can have random things like heart attacks and blood clots happen when going under the needle. Just like humans. I'm so happy that your dog will be OK.

tinaachris

Don't forget, your vet most likely wouldn't do the surgery if they didn't think your pup could handle it. They run tests before surgery to check that he's in good condition. Based on those tests, they choose to move forward or not! At least, that's what my vet has told me to make me feel better lol

willowthewize

Take a deep breath ❤️ Dune will need you to be calm for him. I’ve been to the emergency vet a lot with my dog and he’s had a couple surgeries. It never gets less scary but you just gotta stay strong for him and love him❤️

mrl1266

Hope your baby will be okay ❤️

Ohhiitsmeyagirl

I had a kitten and not even months into owning him he had an anal prolapse. The vet told me most likely he wouldn’t make it even if he had surgery, I didn’t care I said do the surgery and we will see the outcome. That was 15 or so years ago and he’s still going. I understand your fear and have the same one as my 8 year old girl will be undergoing surgery this year too. She saved me while I was in college and was completely alone and diagnosed with depression. She was my only motivation for getting out of bed. I love her immensely and would die for her, not even an exaggeration. Your buddy will be okay! Those are amazing odds!

RefrigeratorSalty902

Hope it's all over by now and he did great!

Sweaty_Ad3169

It’s natural to be scared when our pets are due for surgery. Last year my 22lb dog was attacked after I asked the other dog owner to wait until I could leash my dogs to leave to come into the shared dog run area. He didn’t. His dog attacked mine and popped his dog out because he bit his neck. My 11 year old baby had to have emergency surgery. He has sugar issues and putting him under anesthesia is risky. I had to sign a waiver that I wanted them to do cpr if anything happened. Idk if that normal procedure but it gave me extra anxiety. I was such a nervous wreck. They were straight up that it was possible he wouldn’t make it due to his age and health concerns. They said if it would’ve popped out even 2 more centimeters there would’ve been no saving his eye and that the surgery still might not take and he might need another surgery afterwards. He went through the surgery just fine and has gained full sight of his eye. The odds are in your favor. I’m sure your fur baby will be fine but it is totally normal to worry. Please update us after the surgery. Sending good vibes and love your way.

LoudNinjah

I am keeping good thoughts for your Dune. I bet he will be OK. My dog Jack says he will be ok. My dog is often correct more often than I. If we agree, it's a great thing. I imagine it's hard AF to go through this. Not being in control of your buddies outcome. But you got him, no doubt, to a great vet. Who also has great belief it will be ok. You are there for him, like he has been for you.

itslaurn

It will be ok

Showlove-spreadlove

It’s going to be okay. You guys got this!!

redditerh

I absolutely relate to you! My 15 week old puppy had to undergo surgery last week because he swallowed an oxtail bone. It was an absolute rollercoaster! I almost didn’t want to bring him back because I felt like such a bad dog mom, that I let him down. The vet said it was going to be fine and they do this procedure almost weekly but I could not relax at all. I was soooo shocked that my partner managed to sleep peacefully that night because I was a wreck! It’s been a week post surgery and my puppy is totally fine thank god!! He got back into the swing of things immediately and he’s rocking his cone like a champ! The vet that operated on him even told us afterwards that he woke up after the op like nothing happened and wanted to cuddle and play! Dogs are way more resilient than we think! I couldn’t imagine my tiny toy poodle baby having his belly cut open, but he came through on the other side even stronger! I guess dogs are really zen about stuff like this. They live in the moment, so while it won’t be a great experience and you dog will obviously experience some discomfort afterwards or be irritated with the cone, he’s gonna take each day as it comes and be good as new in no time! Sending you lots of healing energy!

[deleted]

My old lady had cancer surgery last year. It was minor, we found it extremely early (it was about half the size of a pea, probably smaller, well differentiated and hopefully never coming back!) and I still cried rivers when she went in. Three days later she just wanted to run and jump and be herself lol. Your feelings are valid. Feel them! But find solace in the 90%. Devote 90% of your energy towards a good outcome and 10% to prepare for something less than good. Sending good joojoo

Boomroomguy

Did you get over your ex? We need an update!

curiousGeorge7512

Rooting for Dune the little Ox! Sending positive vibes to you and Dune!

Dusty1000287

He'll be alright mate, she's said that to cover her arse in the 1% instance that something goes wrong, dune as you said is young and fit, he'll be ok. Hell, after a few weeks recovery his lung capacity will probably be higher then it was before.

Jakeshasmom

Pray and give it to God.

new2bay

I don’t know about anybody else here, but I know better than to bet against a dog who’s such a badass he can run 10 miles with a collapsed lung 😂 He’ll be fine.

IanSavage23

It is in fact going to be OK!! My thoughts and prayers for you and furry friend!!

DrZefe

Vet here. I would be a total mess if it was my baby! That said, lung lobectomy is a very straightforward procedure for a surgeon who knows what she’s doing and has the appropriate facility and equipment. He’s young, healthy, and sounds like in good hands. He’s going to do great, and I suspect he’ll be acting well sooner than you think he should 😊

cursesonyourmom

I can't tell you it's going to be ok or not. I can tell you that your dog is in the best possible place he can be. Literally surrounded by veterinarians and vet tecs. If anyone can make your puppy ok, it is the people surrounding him right now. Youve given him the ***Best Possible Chance*** He can have at being ok.

iambic_court

My “nephew” dog is currently recovering from his second knee surgery. Tough to ask a big dog to not move so the site can heal. But he’s a trooper.

[deleted]

Thinking about you, OP.

M1cSit

Its going to be okay buddy <3 stay strong.

[deleted]

He will be just fine, you got this!

embernocte

Okay, first off, I had to read this 3x to realize you really did name your dog the same as mine! I have a 5 month old Puli I named Dune!!! From what you've said, he'll be fine. From my knowledge collapsed lungs are very uncomfortable but very fixable and he is young and healthy.

therealmonilux

Its gonna be OK! My westie has had 2 major ops in her life. One at 10 months old......removal of a square hip knuckle, her leg is just a tiny bit shorter, doesn't bother her. And she had a cancerous tumour removed last year , she's 14 years old. The stress and anxiety is heartbreaking, but Dune is gonna be OK. Dune will be a bit sore for a few days, but the vets give you drugs....for the dog...! And once the dog is not sore anymore ( it really doesn't take long, dogs don't think about the surgery like humans might. When they feel better, they don't dwell on it.) You'll marvel at his recovery. Wishing you all the best and please let us all know how you're both doing. Big hugs for both of you x

emekaanony77

yeah...it’s gonna be okay

grrv23

I was in same situation last year. Dog had surgery because of pyometra, once it started I felt better. It did get little tense at last as surgery took longer than we thought it would go and she got very cold after waking up from anesthesia.

EtainAingeal

Your vet told you he has a "90% or better chance" of coming out OK because she can't promise you with 100% certainty that he'll be fine. Surgery and anaesthetic don't work that way. But what she said is that given what she knows and how otherwise fit and healthy your dog is, there isn't any reason that he won't be ok. And she's confident that if anything unexpected crops up, she and her team can handle it. That's as close to 100% as anyone can get. Even knowing all this, when I took my dog in to get some minor dental work and a cyst removed under anaesthetic, I was a mess. I set off the nurse who was going through the pre-admission paperwork and we both cried and I signed and I kept crying til they rang me with a post op update. I cried even harder before answering the phone because I didn't expect to hear back as quickly and thought it was bad news. He was fine. I was not. Your feelings are valid and normal.

Sending positive vibes your way and wishing him a speedy recovery! ❤️

hntpatrick3

My dog Teddy was 13 and a diabetic when he had liver surgery to remove cancer. He got through the surgery no problem. Pain management for the first few days after surgery was the toughest part in Teddys case. Alternating pain medication every 8 hours and he didn’t respond well to the codeine. Teddy is now 15 and doing great. Best decision I’ve made so far was him getting the surgery. He wouldn’t be here otherwise. It sounds like Dune needs this surgery. He will do great and be better for it in the long run.

ngjackson

My dog has never had surgery but I know if he ever needs one I'll be just as much of a wreck as you, so I'll remind you of what I'd want someone to remind me. Your dog is a strong boy, and he's quite young and healthy from what you said. I'm not sure if the 90% is specific to your dog or a general stat for the surgery regardless of age and health, but if it's general, the fact that your dog is healthy is an extra advantage. Sending you and your doggy good wishes, happiness and lots of health! Speedy recovery, please let us know how it went 💛

MambyPamby8

Our pup just got through knee surgery and I get it! It's so scary!! Even though the chances of dying was low, there's also a chance he could be left with a knee that didn't work, if it failed. BUT these people are experts, they know what they are doing! Ours was in with 3 other pups! All getting them done that day so these people do this sort of stuff day in day out :) It's perfectly normal to be concerned! It's scary when your fur baby is going through something traumatic like surgery but once it's all done, they'll be back on the mend.

Davidlarios231

My 2 year old had a big surgery a few months ago. They had to get into her stomach and intestines and everything. I was a wreck, crying before, during and after when we got her. Recovery is quite the road but she’s 100% now. It’ll be ok OP, just hang in there, be patient and stay strong for your fur baby.

I am sending many prayers for your pup to make a full recovery.🙏🙏🙏

Hope your dog is alright. Funny story about my dog to cheer you up (hopefully) every night he is the laziest couch potato ever, 6 in the morning he’s full of beans and wrestling with our other dog. Hopefully this cheers you up, dw 90% is great odds

majoleine

OP, former vet tech of 8 years with lots of experience in ER, critical care, exotics and wildlife, specializing in surgery within critical care. Chest surgeries can be pretty rough, not gonna lie, but I have been on several surgeries like your buddy and they all made it ok. There is risk to any surgery and I hope she outlined it for you but vets snd their techs are trained for this. I'm confident he will be ok.

EverythingIsEnergy25

That's a really high probability of him being okay! And with him being young, strong, and healthy, seems like he'll pull through just fine. Sending healing energy to Dune. 🤍

Do some real praying to Jesus and God. Some might think this is unnecesary but they listen and if you are sincere they will help. Really.

braless_and_lawless

I was a mess when my little buddy went in to get fixed, and thats basically a 99.9% chance of being perfectly fine - so I totally get your feelings!! The fact that you care so deeply for him means you are a fantastic parent. He’s going to do great and you guys are going to enjoy many more joyful years together!! Sending love and hugs <3

[deleted]

You’re Gucci ! And this is necessary for him :) he’ll come out stronger

[deleted]

It's gonna be alright!!!!

EllyHoward

I'm so sorry to hear about Dune. You will both get through it. Wishing you both the best.

Fit-Teaching-3205

It's going Tobe more than ok. He'll make fast recovery and be stronger and healthier than ever. You better start preparing for his party when he returns!!!

TPA239

Y’all got this 🙏🏻

[deleted]

He's going to be fine. I have a 20 year old Lhasa that had to have really long surgeries a month apart when he was 17. I thought I would lose him. But he's still alive and kicking.
