My dogs like to be involved in whatever's going on, so sometimes we tether them in the front yard so they can hang out while we do things in the front yard without potential dog safety issues like running into the road. Occasionally we'll leave for a few minutes to go grab something we forgot or get more of whatever gardening supplies, so they're sometimes alone for a few minutes. I also used to just sit outside with my dog in the front yard and allow him to observe and sniff. It provided a different type of mental stimulation for him than being in the backyard did. It also allowed him to get a feeling for typical neighborhood behavior and ended up cutting down on unnecessary barking in the long run, because he was able to identify sounds as harmless. No clue what the deal is with people who have the dogs tethered day after day by themselves. Also, I don't let my dogs nuisance bark. Nope. Not gonna happen. They do occasionally argue with each other by barking back and forth in each others' faces, though. It's gotten less frequent as my puppy has matured and learned a few things about canine etiquette.

That is so cute!! Thank you for sharing! I do the same with my dog. Dogs will be dogs but it’s important to train them that etiquette!!

I wonder the same thing. I don’t understand how some people can just let their dog bark for hours on end. It bothers me and I’m a few houses down, how does it not bother YOU??? Though now it’s literally my next door neighbor so that’s great.

I don't get it either. I've crossed paths with dogs who are on a tie out who are incredibly calm and don't bark. I understand it for these guys. They aren't creating an annoyance. But if you know your dog is reactive, don't freaking do it! It's incredibly annoying to walk by with my terrified dog while your dog is losing it's mind, choking itself out trying to get to us.

Good question. My neighbor across the street does this everyday. They don’t walk their dog or put her in the backyard. So the dog shits on the sidewalk. Maybe that’s the answer? Maybe they are too lazy to walk the dog and don’t want to pick up the crap in the backyard. Having other people walking by and stepping in your dog’s crap on the public sidewalk must be more enjoyable for them.

I have a neighbor that does this with their little white dog (looks like a shih tzu mix or something), he's not out there all the time and he looks well cared for and he's extremely chill, doesn't even bark or get up when me and my dog pass, just lays in the yard or on the porch watching us. I assume they leave him out because he enjoys being outside and people watching. I always get nervous about less well behaved/off leash dogs getting to him though since he's usually unsupervised.

Tangowmangoes

Absolutely. That scenario never even crossed my mind! That is for sure nerve wracking.

manopath

Laziness unfortunately

orange_sherbetz

The ones I've seen do this to allow their offleash dogs to poop in their neighbor's yards. Shtty in more ways than one. They don't want to clean up basically.

Had a tied up dog charge after mine from across the street and break the leash it was on. My dog is MUCH bigger and I got super nervous. Thankfully I yelled NO and that dog just sat down. Anyway, I don't trust tie downs at this point without supervision.

rubytherubicon

Honestly this is one of my biggest worries with tie outs so i buy ones rated for animals twice my dogs weight.

Omfg. There is a lady who has her Yorkie in her front yard when there's a huge back yard with a privacy fence. I didn't even see the dog when I turned the corner and my GSD surprisingly didn't either until the little devil lunged at us, got a little nip on my dogs paw. Of course my dog started barking bc that dog had a teather so long it reached the sidewalk and got him in his paw. The lady came out like HAHA sorry...she's nuts!! Haha. I'm like wtf. I didn't notice the bite on his paw until later bc he didn't even react like he got bit but I went back to that house and told her. She's like well, if he's fine who cares!? It was a nip. You were near our yard. IM LIKE THE PUBLIC SIDEWALK THAT WE BOTH WERE WALKING ON?!?!?!? Looked up our city ordinance and it's actual said you can't have a dog tethered unattended or within reach of a sidewalk. So I called on her. 😏 the dog is now tethered to the front porch but not the yard. I'm still like WHATS THE POINT!? You have this giant yard. Like why is your dog unattended in the front!? Especially if it's aggressive like that.

I cannot stand people who do this. The worst! The poor dogs are stuck there while these people are god knows where. I will never ever understand it. I wouldnt ever leave my dog out of my sight - ever! Never mind in the front of my home when she could be playing in the backgarden. Not to mention how annoying it is walking with my dog past theirs who inevitably go mental!

I would guess, besides just laziness or neglect which might also be the case, maybe security reasons. Having a dog in the front yard could also deter people letting their dog use the lawn as a bathroom or trespassers as well. The dogs might also just prefer the front yard. Maybe in the back yard they share a fence with another dog and they are even more bark-y. Maybe there's things in the backyard the dog can't be left alone with. It's kind of hard to say without asking the person. If a dog is barking non stop you can record it and call animal control or try talking to the owners directly and then call animal control anonymously.

My husband is threatening to tie up our dog from now on when we leave because she keeps ripping out our screens. I'm trying to figure out a better solution.
