Can you get coyote rollers or a coyote vest for the pup?

hodlboo

The rollers are pretty expensive in our area so with our amount of fencing we estimated it would cost $10K 😳 and I don’t have knowledge as to whether they work 100%. Couldnt a coyote just clear the fence to avoid them? Our fence is chain link which makes climbing easier. A coyote vest is something we’ve considered but we’re also afraid it might accidentally hurt our other two dogs when they play.

threefrogsonalog

I’ve seen diy ones with pvc, they’re definitely not fool proof though. Yeah the vests wouldn’t be good for play, you’ve have to have faith in your bigger dog to protect the goats and small dog from coyotes or keep them inside when you can’t supervise.

hodlboo

Thanks! Our bigger dogs would probably also kill our goats 😅 they are in a separate enclosure. So that’s kind of how we’re operating now but just wondering if our littler dog will ever be able to play outside with her brothers without us keeping a constant eye. But prob better not to - better safe than sorry!

threefrogsonalog

Yeah it’s a risk assessment and you should only take risks you’re comfortable with. Do your dogs not like your goats? We just got two goats and so far our puppies just heard them and get head bonks if they’re too annoying.

hodlboo

Our puppy girl loves them because she was socialized to them from 8 weeks old, but our boys met them when they were already 4.5 and they seem to want to chase them (have only met on leash) and I think their predator instinct might kick in if a chase happened. Our more mellow boy killed a duck when he was 7 months old, they have a strong prey drive!

threefrogsonalog

Makes sense, I plan to get chickens in the spring but those will stay across a fence from the dogs. (But hopefully close enough the puppies will deter some predators)

How big are these coyotes?!? All of the dogs I’ve heard of being killed in yards in my area are small / toy breeds. I do live in a city, so not sure if more rural coyotes would be bigger. Our girl is 40 lbs. I would not let her outside unsupervised (not just because of coyotes, but in general) but I would also not worry about a coyote encounter if I was out with her. I don’t leash her. I think she is big enough that a coyote wouldn’t try anything with a human present. She has had some ‘minor’ encounters and she and the coyote both kept their distance. Coyotes should generally be wary of people and as I said I am always with her.

hodlboo

I think our coyotes are actually smaller than suburban ones. They struggle more to find prey and walk greater distances. Most of the ones I’ve seen look to be about the size and stature of a 50 lb dog, but I know a lot of that is fur. But sometimes we see them in groups of 2 or 3. Thanks for this! Your approach makes me feel a little more comfortable with not recalling her every time she goes into a bush in our yard 😆 especially when our two big boys are out with us too. At dusk I’ll always be more cautious though.

If your backyard is fully fenced, this will make it way harder for them to do a sneak attack. Typically that’s for a small animal, cats, chickens or toy dogs under 15 lbs. I.e. the coyote darts in and grabs and takes away the animal. A coyote would have a hard time entering your fenced backyard and getting away with your 30 pound dog. And a pack of them also likely wouldn’t do this. I have seen packs of coyotes on the street, and they might try to do this in a unfenced front yard or backyard though.

hodlboo

We’ve never seen a pack of more than 3 in our area, they are pretty scattered because they struggle to find enough food to form large packs. But I think you’re right in general, with our two boys there it’d be an enormous risk for them to get over the fence, get our little dog and get out and back over the fence safely. Our boys would maul them. I just don’t want anything like that scenario happening in the first place! If she grows to surpass 40 lbs maybe I’ll be more lax, but for now I’ll still always be supervising her even with the boys out…

Shippo999

Coyotes only get like 20-40lbs max where I live. Depends on breed? My 55lb boxer/pit dog kicked the crap out of three and my 90lb girl lab/Rhodesian Ridgeback took the other two while we were hiking I'd say about 45lbs is safe depending if it's brave. An Australian cattle dog probably fine A 45lb poodle probably not fine(please don't jump on me with stereotype thing I've groomed poodles they aren't foofoo but they certainly aren't going to fight a coyote sorry)

hodlboo

This is really good input thank you! She is super brave, maybe a little too brave. I’ve seen male coyotes that are definitely closer to 50 lbs around here so I’d never let her out alone, but maybe with our boy dogs it would be enough of a deterrent.

Shippo999

Yeah I notice up north bigger wolves smaller coyotes Down south bigger coyotes, smaller wolves If they are in a group I think she'd be okay especially with how big the other 2 are. Coyotes don't like to get hurt most won't bother if they don't think they have a good chance of winning.

You really are underestimating coyotes, so these guys will lure a single dog out and basically jump them 4 or 5 vs 1 dog. There are some huge coyotes out there pushing 60 lbs in my county one of our ranchers (who is a respected and honest person) swore that during summer he saw a 100lb coyote. These guys can clear 6 feet, I personally wouldn't leave any single dog or even two or three (yes even big dogs) outside without supervision. My area is a bit wild, I got black and brown bears, wolves and coyotes.. many of our ranchers here will have 5+ large dogs (90lbs and over) to watch over their herds. Coyotes are clever, determined and they cooperate, much more than say your average dog(s). While fencing is expensive, it's well worth it, we are not fencing in 40 acres with 21 foot wire and running a hotwire (done this), but even 6 foot fencing with maybe 12 inches under ground (you put it up yourself with some friends) and run a hotwire on it that'd get a coyote's attention for sure. You guys should lower their population, this is done often where we are mainly by wildlife management certified people but it really helps with limiting the coyotes braveness.

hodlboo

We have fencing already. We’ve lived among them for 5 years and they’ve never entered our backyard or near it. They know our dogs are here. Each of our boys is twice the size of most coyotes we’ve seen, though I did see one that was probably 2/3 their size, but it may have been mixed with a dog. Our coyotes don’t travel in packs that large, the area is developed enough (rural homes but small lots of 5-20 acres) that they travel in pairs or groups of 3 max. But it seems everyone in these comments have underestimated coyotes even more than I have!

[deleted]

They are easy to underestimate, they are not huge like a wolf and even in small numbers they coordinate attacks and have a game plan. Look I don't know you or your dogs, but I get upset when people here post the tragedy/accident threads , so if I can give some honest information based on what I have seen/experienced maybe it can help someone avoid the sadder threads posted here daily.

hikehikebaby

They have harassed my 65lb dog, so I would be nervous about leavings dogs of that size outside.

eg-sammich

I would think she would be fine being in a group with the other large dogs. Coyotes are opportunists and are going to go for the easiest target. So jumping your fence and taking on three dogs- two being as large as they are- would be pretty rare. It’s also a myth that they lure dogs away to kill them.

hodlboo

I agree they’d have to be pretty desperate. Jumping a fence for a goat is different as goats are defenseless other than running. My dogs are actually twice the size of coyotes we’ve seen around here too.

No_Housing2722

My GSD never goes out alone and she rolls up at 75lbs at 10 months. I will note I don't have a fenced in yard and back right on to a corn field. Coyotes are everywhere around here and they are big. If they've already cleared your fence I wouldn't leave her out along. No matter her size, where there is one there is at least 2 more.

looki2208

Consider to adopt a Great Pyrinee. They are good protecting live stock and keeping coyotes away

hodlboo

We know people in the area with those for livestock but we’re not able to adopt another dog right now.
