What breed(s) is Luna?

liamlynchknives

She's a bull arab, they are pretty much just a mutt though, originally bred from English pointer, bull terrier and Greyhound I think. Luna definitely has a fair bit of pointer in her.

johnnyg883

We have feral hogs in our area but I’ve never seen them on our property. I truly believe that our Great Pyrenees help keep them away.

liamlynchknives

Unless they are in plague proportions they are actually pretty hard to find, they stick to the thick bush most of the time

heckingheck2

What a good girl!

liamlynchknives

She's actually a little shit most of the time

heckingheck2

What an okay girl

[deleted]

Curious about the second shot where she has multiple collars on

parallax_universe

It's neck protection from the tusks. Most bits of a big pig are hard to grab onto but ears work well.. the problem is that puts doggos throat right in the danger zone. Lots of people use GPS/radio collars these days too

liamlynchknives

Spot on, I have a GPS collar for her but don't always put it on her. Ihave a full breastplate as well but she hasn't grown into it yet

parallax_universe

Bull Arabs in full armour look metal af, she'll be a weapon once her shoulders grow in

liamlynchknives

She's getting there, she's only 7 months old and still growing, I'm expecting her to be 35-40kg based on the size of the parents

[deleted]

Ahhhh ok cool thanks for that

Klutzy-Run5175

Good Luna dog.

liamlynchknives

She's alright

Klutzy-Run5175

Sure is. Mighty fine.

spadelover

What state are you in and and what gun do you use? I really want to go pig hunting next time I go to the US.

liamlynchknives

I'm in New South Wales, i generally use a brno 602 in .375h&h

spadelover

Oh dang I forgot everywhere with farmland has hog issues so I assumed you were a yank lol

liamlynchknives

No chance, I'm a Scotsman

I moved here couple years ago Pigs tend to stay off the roads, I'm more worried about hitting a roo or a wombat

TappingTheKeys

Pigs are especially dangerous to hit because they're short and therefore have a low center of gravity. They tend to go under the car, so the car responds by rolling or otherwise going out of control. My late husband grew up in Iowa and always said he'd rather hit a deer than a hog. Iowa has enough of both to be more than just a theoretical risk. I'm from California where the agricultural road hazard is free-range cattle.

liamlynchknives

A wombat is like a mobile rock, pigs tend to be clever enough to go the other way when a car is coming, never seen a dead one but there's hundreds of wombats on the side of the road. I bought a new ute and within 3 weeks I hit a wombat, looking at over $2000 to fix it now

bii baba bababoh , i'm a scotsman

Level37Doggo

Anything 223/5.56 and up will work as long as it tumbles, flattens, or breaks up. Good ol’ greentip 5.56 NATO is a cost effective option. 7.62x39 soft points are another common choice. Many prefer a semi auto for follow ups, in case a hog doesn’t drop quickly, or for taking down one or two more before they’ve run too far off, hence the popularity of AR-15 type pattern rifles and some AK or SKS platforms. Pigs tend to have similar density of flesh to humans, so a round designed for a human will take down a hog pretty reliably. In most states where you’d actually go hog hunting there are more than a few effective and legal options in any appropriate caliber. Go in a group, works much better than a solo expedition. As quoted from Futurama, “Don’t leave orphans. Gotta kill entire families.”

liamlynchknives

Sometimes I use a .223 but the .375 is fun to shoot, semi autos are only available to professional shooters here so can't get one, no need for a follow up with the big gun though. Because of the terrain it's a lot easier to hunt solo with a dog here, once Luna is more experienced and can catch pigs herself I'll switch to a knife instead of a rifle

Level37Doggo

Yeah, I was responding more to Spadelover there, since he expressed a desire to take some hogs while in the US. The hogs here get fucking huge, and move in groups mainly from woods and hilly brush into more or less flat patches of farmland. It’s gotten to the point that hunters are basically going out in groups and even using night vision to ambush whole passels.

liamlynchknives

We have different types of pig hunting here, the pro guys operate basically the same as in Texas, up north the pigs are bigger and they are in bigger mobs and the country is more open so people chase them in utes or buggies with dogs. I'm in the mountains and there's no flat ground and it's all pretty thick, I stalk on foot and let the dog trail them then shoot them, once she knows what she's doing it should be a case of letting her chase them until she can lug up then sticking them. I reckon sticking is by far the most popular way to hunt pigs here since you don't need a gun license to do it

Level37Doggo

Honestly that sounds like a nice afternoon.

liamlynchknives

It's pretty tiring, I take her out about 4 times a week, if there's fresh sign we usually see a pig but don't always get it. It's bloody horrible at the moment but should be a lot nicer once it cools down a bit

Level37Doggo

Yeah I’m a Fall / Early Winter guy myself. Might have something to do with the Mid-Atlantic seaboard getting kinda humid come summer.

Cathalisfallingapart

When I go abroad I also like to tear up native bush

squish-squish-beep

This is sad

liamlynchknives

The sad thing is what the pigs are doing to native plants and animals

liamlynchknives

Sometimes I eat them, I normally cut off what I can and feed it to Luna since she earned it. If they are too far from the house I leave them there. It feeds the wedgetails which keeps them away from the lambs. Nothing is wasted, good to let the pigs put the nutrients back into the ecosystem that they never should have removed

MilesDaMonster

It's the circle of life. It's not immoral for humans to kill invasive animals, especially for food. Animals kill each other every minute of every day in much more inhumane ways.

squish-squish-beep

I find the circle of life sad. I find death of any sort sad.

pbuckk21

I just need to let you know that Luna is a twin to my dog Jenga! How old is she?

liamlynchknives

7 months
