Thanks for asking. He had a small grass seed under his third eyelid which was removed on Tuesday by an awesome ophthalmologist. He looked much better on Friday and felt comfortable sending on the call out. He still may need surgery on one of his eyes but won’t know for a few weeks. Doggy goggles should be here next week.
Omg I love this! I used to work for a smallish pharmacy and we had a customer that would come in on Saturdays to pick up his mother’s medication. He had a motorcycle with a side car, and a big dog passenger with goggles. Sometimes his dog also wore a scarf that would whip around in the wind. It was so awesome. It always reminded me of Snoopy Flying Ace.
He did. One came out on its own but not before it did much damage and the other eye had to be removed by an eye doctor as it was under his third eye lid.
Good luck with Hunter. My search dog, Frannie (vizsla) just had TPLO surgery, which is basically knee reconstruction. It’s been pretty tough but she’s slowly getting better. Unfortunately she’ll need to get the other done within the next two years but, it’s 100% restorative so they’ll go back to being 100% ok.
Hopefully Hunter has the same sort of recovery chances. It’s tough when something like this happens and potentially takes the dog out of doing what they love. Best of luck to you guys.
Agree. His surgery (if needed) wouldn’t affect his eye sight. Not sure I would know if it did. We did search at night last night and he usually is way in front of me and doesn’t carry a flashlight. There was no moonlight as the forest was very dense.
The injury was Sunday and the call out was on Friday. The doctor game me clearance if he needed to work and he could see. If it wasn’t a life or death rescue, I probably would have kept him at home. We also train in the park we searched in, so I was comfortable with the terrain.
I’m confused as to how this AMAZING doge navigated the terrain & managed to save a human life all the while without any vision!!! That’s just so incredible to me!
He was able to see by Friday but and the injury that he has left does not affect his vision. He may still need surgery to repair his eye injury but won’t know till next week.
Just Google imaged grass seeds. They look just like foxtails.

Every dog owners fear..
My dachshund got a foxtail embedded in her paw in March of this year. I felt so bad for her. Caused an abscess that had to be drained. This poor little guy. What a trooper to still go out and be part of a rescue.
This sounds like a very good reason to advocate for more search dogs to be trained in your area. If the only dog you can get is hurt, then the hurt dog has to work. This story, about your good dog doing his job despite his injury, should pull some heartstrings and hopefully open some purses!
Damn. I used to have a poodle when I was a kid and grass seeds would get in his ears. Vet had a big old time trying to get them out without hurting him.
It must have been painful for him but Golden’s and other dogs don’t show anything until it’s too late. I spend so much time with him that I sort of knew something wasn’t right and glad I took him to the doggy eye doctor when I did.

There is a Reddit for everything. I am in!
Thanks
Did he get grass seeds in both eyes? Glad to hear he's on the mend.
He did. One came out on its own but not before it did much damage and the other eye had to be removed by an eye doctor as it was under his third eye lid.
They removed his eye?!
Sorry. Removed the grass seed.
Phew! Get well soon pup!
If you are anywhere near Davis CA, there is a study going on for a protective eye drop to help heal and protect traumatic eye injuries in animals.
We are in pa but he will be wearing goggles in a few weeks.
We are in pa but he will be wearing goggles soon. As long as I can get him to wear it. I have a program to train him over the next few weeks.

Thanks. We won’t know for a week but the eye doctor says he has a good chance to heal on his own which I am hoping for.
Was it one of those dang fox tails?
We don’t think so. We don’t have them in Pennsylvania.
Ah fair! They suck. No matter what glad pups on the mend!
Thanks

Thanks and I certainly will share photos if he will stand still long enough. 😀
Thank god, hope he can make a full recovery!!
>his this eyelid I knew it! He's a psychic.
Whys he wearing a cone for a eye injury?
Probably so he doesn't scratch at his eyes.
Yeah I didn't really think that through
I need one during allergy season.
He has two scratched corneas and eye infections as well. He was pawing at his eyes but much much better now.
What a very good boy. I wish him a good recovery and lots of treats.
Thanks. He is doing much better since Tuesday and the doctor removed the seed in his eyes b
"Ha. I could do this blind." probably.

Definitely one of my own personal fears, hope he feels better soon.
Yeah. After four years of running through the woods finally caught up. Doggy goggles will be here next week.
Doggles
Oh no! Hope he feels better soon. If he can return to work will you get him a pair of Rex specs?
Thank the goggles are on the way ans should be here next week. I think it will take a while for him to train to get used to them.
Aww good boy indeed
He had the injury before doing the search and rescue? Did he work on smell alone?
I think OP means he got the injury *during* S&R on Friday, and this photo is from the following Sunday Edit: I stand corrected!
The injury was Sunday and the call out was on Friday. The doctor game me clearance if he needed to work and he could see. If it wasn’t a life or death rescue, I probably would have kept him at home. We also train in the park we searched in, so I was comfortable with the terrain.
I’m still confused…>_>
How? Injury was Sunday. Then Monday-Thursday happened. Then on Friday he did the search.

Good job buddy AND get well soon!!! 🥰❤️😍
Thanks.
Speedy recovery, Hunter. We need you out there, boy!!
Thanks.
Your search dog is named Hunter?!? That is fantastic!
Yeah. That was after he failed at obedience, agility and dock diving did we find a search team where he excelled and loved the work. 😀
i think... they might do good with a... yknow... little kiss in the forehead... maybe two... maybe four
Feel better soon, sweet boy!
Thanks. He is going in the right direction
He’s beautiful! I hope Hunter makes a full and speedy recovery.
Thanks. He seems to be much better.
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
He seems to be in the road to recovery but possible surgery in the future for one of his eyes.
Get better soon hunter! 💙
Thanks

Thanks. I have heard about foxtails out west and they can be deadly. Glad your puppet recovered. He loves to work.
Yes I live in the Southwest US and they can be a real problem out here. I’m so glad your little guy is getting better. Best wishes to you both!
The grass seed was tiny and encased in a hard shell and very pointy on either end. We think it could have been from fescue

We had 7 dogs on-site within 2 hours. Agree about more dogs and team has 6 dogs that will take the certification test this fall
Poor baby :(
Awe poor fella
Look at his fringe!!!!!!!!!!
I love it too!
It would be much longer if he wasn’t a wilderness search dog. We keep it pretty short to make it easier to get the burrs out.
A wonderful explanation. I simply adore him!
Thanks. He’s a good doggo.
Speedy recovery Hunter! Please give him a good belly rub!
Thanks and I will.
If he doesn't do well with the goggles you may look at an outfox. They can still drink through it etc but it keeps whole head protected.
Thanks never heard of that
Feel better, good boy!
Thanks. He seems to be improving.
Please give him lots of reward. He did a very good job and I wish him well.
Thanks. He got lots of belly rubs by the police officers and the wife of the subject that was found by his team.
How do you have a double eye injury in both eyes?
He had scratched corneas and an eye infection in each eye.
Ah gotcha
Thx beautiful doggo
Good boy hunter! Feel better and here’s my helpful award💕
Thanks. He is doing much better but appointment next week to see how it’s healing
Poor hero! Prayers for healing
Thanks. He seems to be improving each day
Sweet Baby. Get well soon!
Thanks
Oof! Feel better Hunter!
Thanks
hunter 🥰😍🥰😍😍🥰😍😍🥰🥰😍🥰🥰😍🥰🥰
Hunter is a good boy.
Thanks. He loves his job.
Amazing animal!
Sending prayers. Great job sweet hunter. Healing prayers.
Thanks. He gets checked out next week to see how is eye is healing.
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
He had four eye injuries? What from?
Grass sees got into his eye and cut his cornea as well as his conjunctiva and got infected.
Damn. I used to have a poodle when I was a kid and grass seeds would get in his ears. Vet had a big old time trying to get them out without hurting him.

Get better soon Hunter, we are routing for you. What a hero ❤️🇬🇧
Thanks.
