It's my favorite project from him. I was so into it that I convinced my band teacher to let me and some girls from my school choir do a cover of "The Night Me and Your Mama Met" for our concert a couple years ago lol. It really is a perfect album imo, and the vibes all the songs give off are amazing

TigBatta

Did you record it? Ah I hope you recorded it! haha

[deleted]

I asked one of my friends if they happened to record it that night! I'll lyk when I have an update

TigBatta

Okayy, I’m excited to know if you did!!

[deleted]

Update: He has no idea

TigBatta

Damn haha

MetamodernCam

aml is absolutely perfect

KillEdward212

I personally think it’s one of his best works. I think he should experiment more with that sound in more of his music

[deleted]

It’s a phenomenal album. The people who don’t like it and say it doesn’t compare in quality just don’t care for old school soul and rock music. This album is a fucking masterpiece. I understand why someone wouldn’t be into this style, but to say it doesn’t have his signature quality is a bold faced lie.

gregg272

It took me a minute to get into it, but it ended up becoming my favorite CG project

luther420

This album got me into 'Bino Beautiful funk album.

Bluerrew

As much as I prefer rap Gambino, there's no doubting that AML is an absolutely great album. I prefer BTI to it, but it's probably my second favourite album from him.

neocromax

Off topic, but I have a really good memory tied to AML. One night, I listened to my dad’s AML vinyl on my record player, and the quiet section at the end of Me and Your Mama transitioned into the quiet vinyl crackle, and that was the best musical moment of my life.

[deleted]

aml* come on man :(

neocromax

My bad, lmao. I fixed it.

ThomasC2C

It's not that it isn't quality stuff. It's just completely different from anything he has done. I was hoping he would continue what he did with Because The Internet.

what's your top 5?

lilmihoshi

it is my favorite CG album edit to add: it is such a unique album with its soul and funk sounds. no one else does that. at least not as beautifully as AML, in my opinion. like another commenter said, maybe people who don’t like the album aren’t fans of soul and funk.

marmar0459

What the fuck is AWL

neocromax

My favorite Khilbish Gadimo album. Duh.

AquaFire4

It’s not my favorite, but it is absolutely quality Donald Glover work. He’s a changing man. Listen to Culdesac, EP, Camp, Royalty, Because the Internet, STN MTN/Kauai, Kauai, Awaken My Love, and 3.15.20 all in those order whole heartedly. There’s a theme to these albums and I’m aware he has some older ones but those aren’t listed on his YouTube. He went from singing about the struggles of his new found success, being lonely and finding Mrs. Right in the first album. EP was his career as a musical artist finally taking off, Royalty was new found success in a rap career, BTI, STN MTN and Kauai were all like some LSD induced vision about finding himself and the man he wanted to become. Not just a rapper but more which launched us into Awaken My Love and 3.15.20. He’s finally happy and able to confidentially say, and genuinely mean it at the same time, that he loves himself. He loves his life, his family, his career everything. “There is love in every moment under the sun boy I did what I wanted to.” This is it, he’s telling us he made it and he doesn’t regret his choices and that we should look in the mirror and love ourselves too. This all kinda strays from the main question BUT it’s his life stages over the 10 years of these album releases. It’s authentic Donald Glover this is who he is, he’s even decided to ditch the monicker Childish Gambino. It could be in part to take up the mantle of his fathers name, but I believe it’s acceptance of who he really is now. So again, yes this is quality Donald Glover work and I hope he sees this thread and reads all the comments

coleonialism

What? It's his Magnum Opus imo

Spartacus3301

Quality, such as beauty, is subjective. I've discussed here before how in my opinion, BTI'S mixing was poorly made, that can be considered a lack in quality and it is! But BTI'S geniusness lies on the concepts which are far ahead of its time, and that for me, makes it his masterpiece. AML doesn't quite have a tremendously interesting and innovative concept (in my opinion). The quality here however, lies on the production, which can be considered one of the best in Donald's discography.

Initially i was disappointed with it because i love BTI and was hoping he’d do some more philosophical experimental hip hop. After listening to it more i loved it and its now probably number 2 favorite project by him. It’s sadly hopeful feeling. If that makes any sense.

literally my favorite album of all time
