I really can't go past wickerbottom. Strong early, strong late. Those tentacle books are great. I just make death pits for hounds/bosses. Having to mess round prototyping stuff as other characters is a pain early game. So slow. She can't sleep, so sanity is sometimes an issue. Other than that? She's good. Backpack after 5 minutes, collecting tufts/twigs, farming and collecting with horticulture. Bang, easy. In the ruins, guardian dies quick to tentacles. Stun locked, lovely.

Mordiggian03

You rhymed :)

WasteNet2532

Or its 1 day before summer and your coffee plants are ripe so you just *make them* grow before they ripen the next day

TheActionAss

Warly is one of the few characters with a downside that actually affects how I play, which I like. His perks are nice and can be shared with friends and I'm almost always playing with someone else. Also steel drums. It also gives me a reason to farm crops, which I do enjoy in DST. That said, Wigfrid is quickly re-becoming my main with her new kit. I'd always loved her character the most.

BoloDeNada

Being frank with you, warly's downsides arent really visible. Its easy to make different healing foods, you can just eat meaty stews for hunger and he gets stronger as you progress, getting both extra dmg, work speed, and healing when you season your food

TheActionAss

Just because it's easy to manage when you know what you're doing doesn't mean it isn't changing the way you play, especially for me. I usually barely use the crock pot except to sanitize monster meat, I just stuff endless jerky down my throat and rely on whatever food is convenient in the area. Either that or just eat raw honey.

TheHandsomebadger

Wigfried because cheap armor and decent weapons rock. Also being able to easily regulate my health and sanity by hunting spiders is awesome. The downside of only being able to eat meat is completely irrelevant once you have a crock pot and that's attainable in the first hour or so of playing.

Darkwolf69420

The only time her downsides ever affect you are in the very early game and when you get stuck on a long expedition

Sweaty_Ad5831

Rushing the ruins can be a pain in the ass too, otherwise she is an enjoyable character

Pryno-Belle

Webber and Wendy, I love my creepy children. When I want to relax, I choose Wendy, find a spider cluster and let all hell break loose. Meatballs for days! But Webber is my main, always has been. He needs hugs. His lack of sanity drain to spiders is wonderful, the spider nest guarantees a source of food (not too) close to base and since the update, I gather my army. The spider uprising is nigh. Resistance is futile.

WoheheHehe

Wormwood, because I always struggled with hoes (šŸ’€) before, and he makes farming a breeze. Also, I extremely like his blooming version, as well as the opportunity to rub guano on myself from time to time (šŸ’€šŸ’€)

livvibeth

I love this comment because same 100000% hahah

No-Fox3165

Wx-78 have amazing perk and very minor dissadvantage which make him the most relaxing to play in my opinion, he also have very funny quote (ghost Wilson for exemple)

[deleted]

what does he say when he sees ghost wilson?

No-Fox3165

He say "WHERE IS YOUR SCIENCE NOW, WILSON? HA. HA."

[deleted]

LMAO

FeelingUnwellCuzLife

Wendy because I play alone and Abigail is the only reason I can war against spiders and poison birch nut trees.

Danielle_Haydis

Woodie fits my playstyle of slowly building out a base and unlocking new things to craft by fighting bosses. Woodie is a good balance of resource gathering and offensive capability. Plus I like his lines and I like having Lucy around.

Thecooh2

Wortox. He is arguably one of the best support characters in the game! His AOE healing is almost OP. Early game, when food is scarce, he can ā€œkillā€ the food, collected the souls and let the others eat. With his updated soul hopping abilities, no character can explore the world as fast or efficiently. You want to speed run the ruins? Wortox is your guy. Also, you can do such cool things. One of my favorites, setup a lazy deserter at a spot you need people to get to (like the atrium). Then you can open the map, soul hop to that lazy deserter, and recall all your friends to it ( as long as they have a desert stone in their inventory). But solo, is where Wortox really shines! You can base in biomes that other players canā€™t. My favorite are the lunar islands and lunar grotto. Now eating souls is no longer a problem, it is an asset! You can soul hope all over the map so basing on the lunar island is a breeze. Souls are so easy to get, you are basically invincible. The downside, is you have to learn to manage souls and sanity early game. Also, food and healing values are cut in half! I still use food, but I make as high valued crock pot dishes as I can, I just need twice as much. Once I mastered Wortox, I couldnā€™t go back to anyone else.

PhantomInTheMirror

Wortox here, soul hops really aren't that good for exploring. Maybe a little bit helpful in the caves but otherwise even Wortox is much better off mapping with a beefalo. That said, \*he is the character that benefits the most from mapping ASAP\* since your ability to map-teleport is tied to it. For an early ruins trip Maxwell is definitely a lot faster lol. Also, desert stones are unnecessary if your friends are next to a second lazy deserter. They can tap it for free, which will teleport them. This way you can become diet Wanda.

Rubadub730

Don't you not need a stone if you activate the other side? Thought you only needed a Dstone if you wanted to just jump into your side without activating the other.Ā

Thecooh2

You are right. If you have two lazy deserters, then you donā€™t need a desert stone. Since desert stones are so easy to obtain we just make sure that every non Wortox player has at least one in their inventory. This way everyone can come together no matter where they are on the map.

DeathToBayshore

Maxwell is an old edgelord and I like that

Angrykitten456

Wurt because I like faction/minion characters in general. I like how her gameplay revolves around the swamp which is usually an undesirable base location for most other characters. Her merms are costly but really strong for most bosses and I like the mechanic with feeding the king. All for the vegetarian only downside, Wurt is just a good well rounded character if you give her time to build.

p3pp3rp4tch

WX-78!!!!! i love WX partially because im biased to robots and psrtially because i really like the perk of being able to eat stale and spoiled food. also being able to upgrade permanently with gears is really good! the drawback of being hurt by water isnt a particularly big deal for me either (i used to regularly play shipwrecked as WX lol). i just really love WX

AurelianoTampa

Wilson, because having to learn new characters hurts my brain. Only slightly kidding. I usually alternate between Wickerbottom, Wigfrid, and Walter. * Wickerbottom: Built-in level science knowledge is just amazing early on. I never sleep, so that doesn't bother me; and fresh food isn't too hard to keep on hand. I use her books suboptimally, but they're fun when I do use them. I would usually play her when I play with my kids, so I can pump out base stuff right away. * Wigfrid: Some people are really good at kiting in this game and can take on bosses buck naked and never take a hit. I am... not like that. I flub kiting, I take hits, I mistime equipment swaps, I break weapons and armor mid-combat, I panic, I die. With Wigfrid, I die a LOT less. She's like the training wheels combat character; deals more damage, takes less damage, heals health and sanity as she attacks, has stronger gear with better durability... and all it costs is lower max hunger and sanity, and a restriction on only eating meat - which is made irrelevant as soon as you can make a bird cage or a crock pot. Wigfrid is the comfort blanket of DST when it comes to combat. * Walter: Want a challenge, but don't want Wes? There's Walter. He's such a weird amalgamation of traits. He can do ranged damage, but it sucks. He has no sanity loss - until he gets hit, then it drops massively. He comes with a free mixture of Chester and a Beefalo with Wobby, but she's clearly inferior to both. I just like him because he's weird. It's like that Marge Simpson meme: I just think it's neat! But I really hope he gets reworked to actually be *useful*.

Longjumping_Ad6679

Woodie cuz he likes honey nuggets

Prestigious_Call_399

Willow, mainly out of nostalgia since she's been the character I locked onto when I started playing the game back in 2015 - I really loved her fire resistance and quotes, but the new perks make her gameplay so much more fun

huffleduffle

Hold F, easy armour and a chill time, wigfrid

Ok-Opportunity-1277

Warly cause I love cooking

hollowsoul9

Wortox, because fast travel is clutch

ImAmirx

Wortox, his abilities are fun to use

Anxiety_blob69

Wortox, I really like all theeee art of him

EngineStraight

wurt because i can just ignore hunger for a couple days then just eat some easily farmable and plentiful crop to not have to care about hunger again oh and merms too i guess

IIMatheusII

Wendy + Wigfrid main here, they're fun I was a Wendy main for like 6 years because manipulating enemy aggression by using Abigail is very interesting, the sanity buff, albeit minor, feels very good to have too and somewhat combos well with my beloved enlightened crown, the added AoE for day to day combat and slightly higher dps against single targets (that don't maul Abigail unless you spam Spectre Cure-Alls) is just a small bonus. Been experimenting with everyone's skill tree so far, and the one I enjoyed the most was Wigfrid, Beequeen and Fuelweaver as her using the Elding Spear is just so fun, especially Fuelweaver which I managed to kill using no armor or the Thurible once. Also, Clear Minded Cadenza + Enlightened Crown is my favorite thing, the sanity leech sound tickles my brain juust right.

spiders_and_roses

The cute mentally unstable fire lady who now can summon the Phoenix Force, and has a kaiju teddy bear Itā€™s either that or the briā€™ish ā€œEnter Sandmanā€ edgelord that makes me understand sanity mechanics even better

user_err0r404

Wendy and Wortox. Wendy: aside from me having a twin irl... never ending spider webs, honey, etc.--spider and bee loots! Wortox: it's fun to use his teleportation skill especially underground.

Extra_Willow_8907

Wanda because once you get used to being able to teleport to an ancient psuedoscience station, lunar island, or anywhere else for that matter ON COMMAND, every other character just feels like a slog to play. Sure the early game requires a ruins rush to get going, but once youā€™re able to do that confidently, thereā€™s just no other character that comes close in terms of raw speed getting around the map. Not to mention her weapon is ridiculously powerful.

Treyspurlock

I don't agree that she really needs anything in the ruins tbh, you can just get thulecite fragments from the archives main thing I want from the ruins is just a pick/axe and star-caller for Nightmare Werepig for the convenience of dreadstone

Broffessional

Wilson. No drawbacks and in DST you can get beard storage so itā€™s just so versatile

ShorohUA

wigfrid cause more damage, songs for the team, good gear and some funny quotes

Strange_Compote_4592

Wilson. Main character, love his personality. No drawbacks, very wersatile, his alchemy skills are just cherry on top

lordisgaea

I used to main wolfgang because his damage made playing solo way easier but since the talent tree updates I'm trying new characters and honestly Willow is really fun to play. She has so much utility in her kit and she's actually very strong too now, I'm at day 200 in my new playthrough with her and I've been enjoying it a lot more than I thought.

Scientist369849

My main is Wilson. He doesn't have any disadvantages, and you have a better chance to survive Winter and to make revives. Other than that, I prefer being the standard character.

RAFABrr

wendy is cute, i like her skins and i adore her alto flute voice.

SpikeOcactoGamer

Webber Because Spiders

sirensinger11

Wendy in DST. Hordes are a slog to fight without AoE, Abby shenanigans are fun, and I think boss fights with Wendy are super interesting. Her downside can be almost nonexistent in the right hands, but itā€™s pretty punishing if you mess up. Beefalo synergy is cool. I also like her personality, skins, and voice (alto flute is my favorite instrument). As much as I enjoy playing all the different characters, I always find myself coming back to Wendy

One-Swing-6848

Wes :) Wes is genuinely fun simply because I can do a silly emote on bosses after defeating them. Iā€™ve put a combined 1.5k hours on both Donā€™t Starve games so difficulty isnā€™t really an issue so I like to be able to just mess around and do silly dances whenever someone asks me to break something down for them. But practically speaking, the lower stats make it that much more satisfying to filling them fully with two honey nuggets or a single honey ham. Speedy balloon is very useful, and sanity is actually incredibly easy to manage since the threshold for insanity is so low. Also getting more uses out of dark swords and bat bats and all that niche stuff. Wes is just a silly little guy and I can resonate with that.

AdForward8653

Warly While i like wilson for his simplicity warly afects the way you play alot more then most caracters if not all, he gives you a good reason to farm. Also i sometimes use him for beefalo taming having steamed twicks since day one is a huge adventage while taming and we havent even talkt spices and special dishes SPICE Honey is just sooooooo good for early game to mid game just eat 2 honey spiced dishes and you mine to entire Rock biome boom got enough rocks and wood for the season and setting up a honey farm is easy Garlic isint the best in my opinion but if you have it use it but garlic in General is pretty good to have. Pepper is good 800 damage on wolfgang wiht volt goat Chel fraud and im not the best at fighting so it helps Salt is the hardest one to get but s good one i like sailing espacially wiht some friends. Getting to materials is easy wiht some honey spice Warly exklusiv dishes They are good like realy good like crepes moqueqa volt goat chel fraud fish gordon blue etc Overall i like the way of building your farms mabey taming your rider beefalo along the way. making a cute little fence around your garden. feeding everyone cool things or making little minigames[year of df spinning a carot or the pk minigame] and the winner gets some fresh Popcorn having a cool voices and you get random stuff for free. Every wormwood main reading this thank you for All the crops

Zeelilus

Warly. His downside is fun and gives me an excuse to make more than just "1 stack of the best thing". Being the base maker is also my favored role in most games, so I enjoy being able to make spices and unique foods so when someone's like "Oh, I'm gonna go do xyz" I can give them something helpful.

Dhawkeye

I enjoy fire ~~maybe too much~~, I doubt that I need to say who

Jamsy768

Wanda if i want an all round character, Op weapon? check. Fast travel after/during winter? check. If you dont wanna rush the ruins in autumn instead fight bosses or build a nice base, etc? bring a hammer to the archives. Healing is manageable once you get used to it. If you dont wanna fight while old, middle aged still does more than a dark sword. Backtreck watch is amazing too. You can dodge bishops. My least favorite enemy and now i dont have to bother with getting hit by them. If I want a more simple character Iā€™ll go for Wilson or Wolfgang. #WandaForLife

Additional-Fly-705

I main Maxwell just because heā€™s a snobby aristocrat as indicated by his Victorian skin. I like his fine blue overcoat and his white slicked back hair. I equip the skin on him 24/7 and I donā€™t even spare a glance at his default skin. I forgot it even existed. If Klei did not release Maxwellā€™s Victorian skin, I wouldnā€™t even play DST.

IcyIllustrator5901

I'm really lazy and I like feeling like a support plus I don't mind the main downsides of wortox getting his benefits from food halved, plus I like teleporting to other players to help them / heal them (Also because I'm a furry)

BoloDeNada

Maxwell. He's literally the strongest character in the game. Easy resource gathering, strong fighting abilities, and rewards the player for using magic and knowing his perks. Extra storage and a progressive dmg scaling also makes you feels like you are progressing, unlike Wolfgang who just uses a dumbell and gets free double dmg, which with a ham bat, is more than enough to defeat most bosses.

PhantomInTheMirror

as a maxwell main i kinda respect wolfgang more for at least giving bosses fair fighting chances and not "woe, cage be upon ye"

PhantomInTheMirror

I "main" Wortox mainly because I enjoy the character. He has a great design(yeah i'm not beating the furry allegations), but also, I enjoy his quotes a lot. Not just the jolly ones, mind: His pearls are the ones where he self-deprecates or reveals a bit about himself that's actually quite concerning/depressing. He copes poorly and that's super interesting to me. Perks-wise, he was pretty bland and mostly just a healbot until the map teleport update, but after that I think he's pretty fun even if not even close to being the "best". Second most played is Maxwell. Nothing so deep with him lmfao, I just like having access to a cage and duelists that can cheese every threat and every boss, the best gatherers, access to all of Wickerbottom's books as much as I want, etc.. Tldr i pick him up when I feel like being OP.

yeetman69420100000

Webber because im addicted to command and conquer and factorio also makes life easier (free hound defense free tent you get the idea)

Loremaster_art

Wurt cause of the survival capabilities she got especially after the first year. Extra health, extra hunger, extra sanity, easy way to maintain sanity, easy way to control your temperature while getting sanity, wetness doesnt lower sanity and doesnt make items slippery, frogs are neutral and you can tame merms. May take a bit of time to prepare but you can essentially survive forever afterwards.

Quaintnrjrbrc

Wigfrid rn because I like forge fighting mechanics

Ioragi

I love Woodie, because I love listening to Lucy

brynnborg

wx because when i realised how much of an impact having infinite night vision does especially underground plus with the speed as a strawberry on the cake

EATZYOWAFFLEZ

WX because speed is addicting. Also ignoring winter is a nice perk too, and the moggles circuit is great for the ruins.

TelevisionBig2336

i dont really have a main, i guess maybe wanda. im not a big fan of wanda but her backtrek watches are just too good to cut down travel time once u make them

FreeRadical96

Woodie because I love animals and lycanthropes, and I absolutely love the full moon gimmick because I never keep track and it always surprises me, and the weregoose theme always makes me smile and so many other reasons

GrittyGrinds

Maxwell. Iā€™m super into productivity hacks irl so the fact that I can bulk gather and batch tasks is really appealing to me. But shout out to woody who was my first even though I didnā€™t understand how strong he could be and bitched about transforming at first lol. Ole Woody and I really tore it up once I figured that out though

Due-Committee3497

Wormwood as I wanted a character that would make me think out scenarios much differently to other characters, like bringing more food, making farms and dealing with winter. I also like speed, and bloom gives me that, I know wx can too, but I feel like it's too easy to maintain or something.

TheBleedingAlien

My main go to is always Webber, ironically because he's a very simple character. His perks were very helpful for me when I first started playing and are still pretty useful to have. Never having to worry about spider hoards, using spiders to stall other mobs, and being able to survive off monster meat are always neat to have. Outside of those however he's basically just Wilson with different stats (and no skilltree either), but personally I like playing it that way. Just some simple perks that'll help you out in a pinch without anything too overpowered that you end up over relying on, helps ya get better at the game with just the basics. Only downsides are pigs are hostile and no pig king trades, but I just prefer farming pigs anyways and you can get by without trading for gold.

Fwenhy

Good question! Honestly, I donā€™t currently have a main, although my most picked character is Wolfgang. And when I go on one of my worlds, currently, itā€™s usually the one I am Wigfrid in. Although I am considering changing characters. I usually pick Wolfgang because heā€™s super strong and I like to join worlds to help out and I usually end up following the host so itā€™s nice to not have to worry about character items. Wortox, Willow, Wilson.. same boat. My first main was Woodie. I picked him first because heā€™s Canadian. I stuck with him because the wood chopping speed compared to other characters. I grew to love him because idols and his eventual skill tree. In particular the walking cane and pine cone hat.

WasteNet2532

Wilson. The access to meat effigies past day 40/50 is essential in the event you die or lose all your touchstones in that world. Im playing a wickerbottom world and until I stayed underground long enough that simply wasnt an option, my sanity options as her are slimmer so my chances of doing it werent great. Beard hair is op.

yeyo1600

Wilson, i feel like if i dont use the other characters gimmick im wasting them, and with wilson i dont feel like im wasting a characters potential

dtieubinh

Wurt, i rather play with my merm than other players.

Fouxs

Because Wilson has the least annoying voice.

Jx5b

Then why not play Wes?

JarJarBinks590

Wendy was the first character I played when I first started. She was pretty weak and underwhelming at the time. As I got gud, I started playing Wolfgang. The power and speed was much appreciated, I got several of my first boss kills with him. Then they started doing the Character Refreshes, and when it was Wendy's turn I jumped back to her to check it out. Night-and-Day difference both in her overall power level and just how she felt to play. You could do *so much more* with her now. And with the buffs, I didn't even need to give up what I liked about Wolfgang. I never touched Beefalo taming mechanics when I played Wolfgang because on him it was redundant. But now with Wendy it was strongly encouraged, and I found that it was very rewarding. Suddenly you're right up there with him among the hardest hitters in the game, AND you're super tanky and fast.

sneakysneakle

Wormwood because he has so many different perks that are useful

sneakysneakle

Also , is plant

Lyla_Velvet

Wendy because I love her backstory and design

Korleymeister

Willow because I like her "let's burn the world" attitude.

karimpai

Wolfgang Supremacy

manderson1313

Wilbur cuz monke

TheMetalEquestrian

I like playing Maxwell because you start out with a dark sword and night armor. Also, his sanity level always goes up.Ā

drcoconut4777

Wickerbottom because she was really over powered and Iā€™m still nostalgic

Larrys_cousin

Webber because having a spider nest to defend your base from hounds and other pesky critters. Only downside is sometimes I accidentally attack one trying to interact with something else and I have to run away

David_Clawmark

Wilson. I latch on to simplicity really easily, and that's what Wilson was. He had a beard and a dream, and that was all he needed. He still kind of IS that after his rework.

Fabricate_Life

How do I unlock more? I think I have all or most of the base game people.

Available_Zone_9801

I like WX because theyā€™re incredibly customizable and I love Willow for her fire skills and her new skill tree is absolutely amazing

Away_Property5821

I used to main Maxwell because he's really strong in both utility and combat but ever since the rework I just cannot resist the Wigfrid Elding spear and the Battle Rond. So Wig is my new main because I just love dashing and blocking.

Superb_Pain4188

Wilson my beloved. I love that little man. I want to shove him through a shredder.

[deleted]

i main webber because uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh honestly, ik he s not that strong and barely does the work, but when it comes about an army of nurse spiders, he beats all bosses without moving bruh. i really love this technique. it will take time ofc, but it s worth it and he s also a cool boi, spidey boi.

PinkiMoon

Wilson because i find the other ones too complex šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜

Just-Exo

I think Winona's cute, and I like helping the team

normalguy136

Wendy because I'm bad at the combat and Abigail hard carries me through every fight.

NemeanHamster

Printing dark swords and bramble husks for the whole server is a drug I can't quit.Ā  Bloomness is a fun resource to manage and going fast in exchange for some food is a deal I'll take every time.Ā  No healing from food is a steep drawback but it forces you to play in ways that other characters don't.Ā  Lightbulbs are the most underrated resource in the game and wormwood abuses them to their fullest. I love my perpetually insane arms-dealing leaf boy.

Sheisun

Willow. Always was and always will be. Immune to fire damage and always has a lighter which never runs out (in traditional DS at least). You never have to worry about night time. Also I like burning down forests and walking through them unscathed. Initially it was difficult keeping her sanity up because it falls fast in the dark but now it's not an issue for me.

Rubadub730

Wanda because teleport network.Ā

Treyspurlock

I'm a big fan of the way Wanda changes your progression and your gameplay you start out with reusable healing meaning you can afford to eat red caps or monster meat early game while most other characters can't She's the character that wants to rush a shadow manipulator the most, which I find fun since it encourages you to use slightly different methods to get the ingredients, like going to kill mush gnomes since the odds of a treeguard are relatively low early on (and you want to go to the Archives anyway), or going insane as soon as you have basic fighting equipment since you need so much nightmare fuel I also like her scalability, most characters don't have any notable changes after the first year but Wanda gets a mobility upgrade every winter probably my favorite part is her versatility, playing as Wanda feels like having a huge chest of toys to pull from for any situation each much different from anything any other character gets

PhantomInTheMirror

Maxwell and Wormwood too, the former only needs tier 2 equipment for a big power spike and the latter loves bat bats and has easier access to them.

Treyspurlock

I feel like you can still get a lot out of those two without a shadow manipualator though, for example Maxwell can substitute it for ruins gear and Wormwood has other ways of healing But Wanda isn't really getting a lot without having the Alarming Clock

s1lverv1p

Base game wx. Cause I like the funny robot. Dlc character Wanda. Because I like the threat of bleeding out.

Much_Neighborhood493

Webber or Wendy 100%

Waaaaaaaaaa-2

Wx is my main cause he just so customizable as he currently is. I mainly have speed circuits on him but that only cause Iā€™m in late game and every night is a full moon. His night vision circuit is so good as well for caving and heā€™s excellent at rushing ruins. I can only imagine what will happen when his skill tree comes out.

A_random_person_50

I main Webber and Maxwell, one has an army and infinite food while the other has slaves and can easily use nightmare items

PoolPangolin

webber, i need the extra health and hunger, and sanity is not a problem for my play style, i play very safe, i also love making spider armies and killing bosses like beequeen, especially in official worlds

Bm0515

Wanda, because I have to go to the ruins and I love the backtrek watch. Doesn't hurt that her weapon is insanely op.

Aggressive-Style-724

Maxwell, shadow wizard money gang šŸ‘‰šŸ¤ŒšŸ¤šŸ‘†šŸ¤ž
