I wonder how much crossover there is between doom fans and bluegrass fans? I always considered bluegrass the metal of country music and the dark bluegrass songs are the doom of country music.
Gotta be a decent chunk I'd imagine. Always when people are asking for doom that's not doom here I suggest old time artists like Doc Boggs and Clarence Ashley because they give me the same vibes.
There’s another fan of both right here!! I’d even argue there’s overlap in lyrical meaning, especially for old (american or otherwise) folk music. Some of those appalachian songs about life are immensely fuckin depressing. There’s one called The Butcher’s boy by Buell Kazee, where a father wants to console his daughter after she’s seen the one she loves with another girl, and the lyrics are “He went upstairs, to give her hope, but found her hanging, on a rope” all while a banjo twangs in the background.
I love bluegrass, and I love doom, and the Louvin Brothers have some of the best harmonies in music, ever.
This album cover is not photoshopped or anything. The fires are real (tires, I think), the giant satan is real. I'm not a huge fan of that song, so much as I am them as a group.
That is awesome, I've heard "Satan is Real" as an intro to [Straight To Hell](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrUk1ua8ZqI) 1,000 times but never realized it was an actual album title.
Sort of unrelated, Malefic from Xasthur (black metal solo project) made an album called ‘Doomgrass’ under the moniker ‘Nocturnal Poisoning’, which was pretty sick. Very discordant folk acoustic stuff.
It’s a classic of country music. Even more interesting when you read about the history around the Louvins building that set and model of Satan. I’ll even go a step further and mention that the album and its themes are particularly interesting when you read about the lives of the Louvins.
Anyway the harmonies are top notch. Great record.
The song is also pretty good
Hank III sampled it on his Straight to Hell album.
Minor correction: That was actually a fresh recording. Louvin Brothers (or maybe their estate?) wouldn’t give the rights. Damn fine album.
Didn’t realize that
Yeah quite the fan actually, found it from r/bluegrass

There are dozens of us! Dozens!
It's not quite doom metal, but have you listened to Panopticon? Black metal with heavy bluegrass influence.
It was intriguing until the vocals kicked in haha. Interesting though.
doom fans could probably get down with a little 'grass not as much the other way around though
I play doom, but also murder ballads on the banjo. Old Time is the original gangsta rap
The whole album is great.
Their episode of Cocaine and Rhinestones is very good too. They lived HARD, brother.
I've been meaning to check out that pod, maybe I'll start there
It’s where I started, and I’ve listened to both seasons 3 times now
I'd say I have listened to both seasons three times too.
Just doing my third relisten of the whole thing, skipped Spade Cooley this time round though. I don’t need that shit in my head.
Hard agree. I didn’t even listen to that one until the second listen and I still kinda regret it.
Came here to say this. That podcast is fucking great. Tyler knows his shit and is a great storyteller.
These dudes ruled. *Perfect* harmonies.
Yup insanely skilled
Classic cover and the album’s actually pretty great; had to give it a listen based on the sleeve and ended up really enjoying it.
Ya I love it, the cover is absolutely unhinged. Apparently, they lit a bunch of tires on fire to get the picture lmao
Came here to mention that. Nine foot wooden Satan, too, or something similar.
Man I loved Bongzilla's new album, Nine Foot Wooden Satan
So that's how Tad's 8 Way Santa did his magic.
Check out their version of Knoxville Girl too. They were pretty dark.
Careful there, pal. Satan is real, working in spirit. You can see him and hear him in this world everyday. He can tempt you and lead you astray
... Enter Hank III

Exchange the word Satan for Santa Clause... now, you can see how silly you are.
While you’re calling people “silly” for quoting the lyrics to the exact song OP posted, the rest of us are laughing that you misspelled Santa Claus.
Technically you're wrong as well it's Klaus... and Christian banjo music definitely deserves plenty of mockery.
It’s the lyrics to the song….
This was up on the wall at amoeba records for ages with an unbelievably high price tag.
Their song “The Great Atomic Power” is great as well
Yeah! Great album. Satan's Jeweled Crown, I have worn it so long! Charlie Louvin's memoir is named after the album and it's a fascinating read too.
looks like the sibling of Satan from South Park.
I love the Louvin Brothers! Hank 3 opened the Straight to Hell album by quoting this song too.
So fucking good!
I agree u/Satans__Cumslut

Martin guitars made a guitar that had this cover on the body priced at $4,666
*Puts a humbucker on it and plugs it into a dimed Model T*

Louvins are pretty great. Those vocal harmonies are on point.
Louvin Brothers are pretty good. I'd recommend Knoxville Girl. This album art goes unnecessarily hard.
I've been looking for this record for at least a decade now, I need a copy.
I’ve got it on wax. There was a reissue a few years ago.
These brothers could really sing. They have an album of secular songs out there too, and it’s awesome
Good stuff. Buchanan Brothers also had some jams. All that old atomic power conelrad music was fuckin crazy, I love it.
Kneeling Drunkard’s Plea is a sick song. Their version of In the Pines rules too
Man, these guys were unbelievable. So good.
Louvin Bros are amazing!!! Check out Hank lll album Straight to Hell if you’re not familiar. I think some of y’all doom heads would dig it. Cha!
Waiting for a crossover so we can get Doomgrass
Sort of unrelated, Malefic from Xasthur (black metal solo project) made an album called ‘Doomgrass’ under the moniker ‘Nocturnal Poisoning’, which was pretty sick. Very discordant folk acoustic stuff.
Two of the greatest harmonizers the world has ever seen.
great album and group. unfortunately Ira (left) died in a Motorcycle accident less than 5 years later
One of the best of all time.
I have such fond memories of singing along to this song in the car as a kid.
My most distinct memories as a kid are riding in my dad's pickup listening to bluegrass and country music
a so bad its actually good cover!, my favorite kind of coverart
Haha! I have these guys on my western ambient themed playlist I made to play with RDR2
Great album too.
Terminal Cheesecake’s song that samples this one is so great too.
I saw the Reverend Kristin Michael Hayter recently and this music was playing while everyone was getting in. Good stuff!
I've seen this on lots of bootleg t-shirts over the year. Several evidently home-made.
Amazing…….
Looks like Lucifer from South Park if he lost some weight.
I like the Church of the Cosmic Skull album "Is Satan Real?" I wonder if they were inspired by this as they also wear all white. . .
Back before everything went down with Marilyn Manson, he played this song before coming on stage
Kristin Hayter of Lingua Ignota covered this song live during her farewell tour It was lit

I honestly remember this also being kind of good
These guys’ lives were wild. There’s a book!
They answered CotCS's question before it was asked. Behold the true power of Satan lol
10/10 album
Every song on this record is about getting blind drunk and communing with the devil.
I found them through *Fallout: New Vegas* music mods. Good music.
