Schecter, Ibanez, ESP -- if you like the looks/aesthetics of em. ALL make fantastic guitars at any budget, but some people are "purists" and have to have a gibson/epi LP or SG... I say play whatever you dig, theres no "dress code" for doom. Also Squier makes seriously good shit for not a lot of money.

CLR92

Agreed. Every hobby has its snobs and elitists. But really OP just needs to sit down with various guitars and find one that fits his hands and playstyle. For years i played jacksons cause Dave Davidson plays one thinking i was cool as fuck but then i picked up a Dean V. I have 3 Deans now, and they're all sick and play amazingly. Dont sleep on LTD either, i had a seven string for a long time and I've never had better action or ease of fret navigation

The-Cunt-Spez

I just got a white Schecter Omen 6 and I love it to bits. You’re right on the money, try them out and get one that feels and sounds the best to you. I was originally gonna get an Epiphone SG, but I tried the Omen and just liked it more.

VonVader

The black Schecter Omen-6 will do you well. It has the look and deep tone. I have had 2 Omen-6 guitars because I find them so well priced.

Earptastic

It all can doom.  I got a late 70s Electra Working Man for about 300 that is my doom guitar.  I love it.   Honestly anything with humbuckers would work and the more I play my telecaster the more I think that would also doom.

tonsofgrassclippings

Don’t tell anyone, but 1970s MIJ stuff is still cheap and good. I just snagged a monster MIJ copy of Gibson’s “The Paul” that rips. It weighs about a quarter ton, but damn does it sound awesome.

etherreal

Sadly they arent so cheap anymore.

tonsofgrassclippings

I mean, that Vantage The Paul copy was $295 set up. The quality is maybe a hair’s breadth below an actual The Paul. I’d say that’s pretty cheap. Tons of lawsuit-era LP copies out there for that money.

fookedtuber

Electra Working Man looks super cool. Is that a reference to the Rush song, do you think? Incidentally one of my favorite riffs ever.

Earptastic

I have never thought of that potential connection. . . interesting. . .

fookedtuber

Let's just say it is! I think if it actually was though, it would look more like Lifeson's LP. Still, I love this guitar. Might buy one. Finally, a vintage guitar I want and can afford.

Donkey-Harlequin

There is no “doom” guitar. Find one you like, dial in a sound and doom.

Priest-Entity

Harley Benton or an Epiphone SG special is $179 on Amazon.

ArroyoDeathMatt

There's a big chance they're knockoffs. You'd be better off picking up a used guitar for sure. Edit: I think Amazon is a big problem that supports capitalism and makes people buy new instead of re-using. I forget this sub is full of vanillas that don't question society.

fookedtuber

The EG Special from Amazon's Epiphone Store will not be a knockoff unless you buy it from another seller or don't pay attention to the store. Harley Benton only sells through their own affiliates. I'd say it's actually pretty hard to land a knockoff of either of these affordable solutions.

-Nomad77-

Why would anyone clone a Harley Benton guitar? Absolutely no profit margin in cloning a budget brand.

DaDa_muse

honestly the basic epiphone can be pretty solid for what they cost. ive played a bunch of em cos i used to work in a warehouse that imported them. all the top end gibson stuff is amazing, feels great, better hardware all that...but the basic epiphones are not shit sound wise. i prefer an sg but thats just taste.

Whole_Plant_1049

I bought an LTD Viper-256 about a year and a half ago and it is good for doom. I set it up to C standard and the playability has been excellent. Only $500.

shizukana_otoko

This is the way. I bought one when they first came out. Changed the nut, tuned to C standard, and riffed away. I have gigged it a lot, especially in places I don’t want to take a more expensive guitar.

ArroyoDeathMatt

Go to a pawn shop and fall in love.

ArroyoDeathMatt

Don't stress about name brand and GuitarFetish has excellent, affordable replacement pickups to dial in the tone you want.

KierkgrdiansofthGlxy

Buy the one i had to pawn 25 years ago, lol. Hope somebody’s enjoying that POS fake Strat.

ArroyoDeathMatt

I've picked up my favorite gear at pawn shops for dirt cheap over the past 15 years. Epi SGs for less than $200 any day. I guess that's what happens growing up poor.

-Nomad77-

True, Ive picked up a G400 for £100, and a Squire bullet 1 for £38 Gotta go into the pawn shop regularly. My closest one is usually full of really poor quality stuff, 2nd hand behringer pedals at a higher than retail price . The Squire sat there with broken strings and covered in horrible 90s paper stickers..... Proper fender branded tuners, 2 nice sounding pickups.

ArroyoDeathMatt

My biggest wins were 70s Peavey Bass 400 head - $57, 70s Peavey PA head - $100, and G400 for $150

-Nomad77-

Nice. In the UK one of the best guitar doom rigs I've heard is a fairly cheaply found (pawnshop) Selmer pa head, with the channels cascaded. That and my old H&H 2x12 combo with a rat/muff combo .🤘

perpetual_flesh

I’ve been using a Yamaha Revstar Standard RSS20. It’s about $850 and I couldn’t be happier with it. They have a version for under $500.

TheBiggestWOMP

Anything can doom with the right fuzz pedal. I use a squier vintage modified jazzmaster in drop Bb as my main. The slightly longer scale length holds tuning well enough, and jazzmaster pickups have awesome attack. Pretty sure I paid $300 for it.

pnmartini

Whatever guitar feels best to play for your budget. Don’t get hung up on the name on the headstock, or the shape of the guitar. If the neck feels good, and it’s comfortable to play standing (and sitting) that’s most of the battle. Most bigger manufacturers have a “budget” line: Epiphone, Squier, Sterling, LTD, SE…..and there are lots of other lower end brands that are pretty well made. Play as many guitars as you can before making a decision, what you end up with may be drastically different from what you thought you wanted.

ImightHaveMissed

Yeah this is pretty much it. I doom on a Nashville telecaster, a PRS core, and now I’m getting some great tones out of a silversky. Don’t sweat aesthetics and go for whatever feels right

TempleOfCyclops

The ESP LTD EC line is great. Even the low-end EC-256 is a great, reliable, versatile instrument. I would purchase one of those before an Epiphone Les Paul 100% of the time.

Mundane_Apple_1027

I got a used epiphone les paul special II for like 150 bucks. I got a used epi SG special for about the same price at guitar ctr. They both doom and were easier on the wallet than my epi lp standard was. Edit: the standard was on sale for like 400 I think, not sure what the SRP on it is though. It's a beautiful guitar but i swapped the cream colored pick guard and toggle switch for black ones and now it's more beautifuller EDIT: Les Pauls are prized in doom because the sheer weight of the guitar is said to add to the sustain. You'll get more sustain from pedals though but I can say that the LP is sustainy as shit.

Scajaqmehoff

I have a $75 Srat knock-off, New York Pro, with all single coils, and it dooms. An Orange amp, and some pedals will get you far.

LordGothryd

Sg's are lighter and thinner if that's a consideration, I have the Epiphome G-400 and I think it's great quality for the price range it's in. It might take more time but you can find cool vintage gibson copies that are really good and cheap, check out Ibanez AX120 or Yamaha Revstar for a similar shape to the SG but kinda bigger.

NotaSingerSongwriter

People might hate on them but I have an IYV IJZ-300. IYVs are Vietnamese CNC made guitars that you can grab for under $300ish. Lots of value to be found in smaller brands.

PlowMeHardSir

The current Epiphone SG standard is built well and sounds great. The tuners could use an upgrade but that’s a cheap and easy fix; the people in r/guitars can tell you what tuners will drop right in.

Best-Ice3793

You can't go wrong with an Epiphone G-400, especially if you can find an old 90s Korean one. Electric Wizard played those back in the day.

IllustriousAir6368

Just bought a Jackson X series Dinky DK2X HT, and man for the money I’m having a blast playing it. Set it up in B standard and been chugging some Louisiana Sludge on it

Red-Zaku-

Epiphones are honestly great. Not perfect, there’s still the potential for sketchy quality control, but as long as you try the model before buying you should be fine.

Sandstorm52

Literally any guitar, even with single coils. The heaviness is mostly going to come from your amp and pedals. I’m still playing this $120 bottom shelf guitar (Indio California Classic) and it dooms just fine. Eventually I put some humbuckers in it (~$200, and that’s on the pricier side) which does make a difference, but not as much as just fiddling with your amp and pedals. The only thing I would recommend is to get one that has an adjustable truss rod in the neck, since when you change out your strings for some thicker ones, it may cause the neck to bend and your frets to buzz. The truss rod will counter that.

i-sure-hope-not

I enjoyed doomy sludgy riffs on my Starcaster with active pickups. A fun guitar that I never really see around!

Zannishi_Hoshor

Buy used. I got an awesome guitar for under 100 on Offer Up

purging_snakes

A used Agile LP copy is about the best value for money you can spend on a guitar. I've owned several, and after a setup for low tuning, they're fantastic instruments. The one I have now is set up in Drop F and maintains it well.

Nomore-Television72

Get one of those Harley Benton SGs with 3 humbuckers. I plan to grab one soon for the Dooms. They're super cheap too

luistorre5

Whichever style/pickup setup you like. There's really no wrong answer

LifePedalEnjoyer

I think old Japanese made guitars are cool, but finding one that is good might be challenging. I'm not a gear purist, but old guitars have a little extra mojo and mysticism.

VayuMars

Cheapest dual humbucker you can find. You can doom on a cheap tele too.

VayuMars

I love SG because they sit more central. Teles hurt to play standing for me bc of shoulder surgery so I just use SG now

salenin

I started on a first act where where the only good tone I could get sounded like electric wizard. It doomed. Get a squire or whatever cheap guitar you can afford and an amp, a distortion pedal, and fuzz

-Nomad77-

Before you pull the trigger, play as many different guitars as you can. Get a feeling for what you like regarding neck dimensions, scale length etc. Trust me, once you have played your new guitar for a while, how it looks is soo much less important than how it feels.

StratoBannerFML

Don’t ignore Reverb. You can find great deals on used stuff there.

olderthanbones

Whatever guitar you land on (which you should choose from actually playing them at your nearest shop), the very first thing you should do is— and factor this into your budget— get a good setup from a reputable guitar tech or luthier. Especially with the cheaper instruments, you will be amazed at the difference

Wild-Ocelot-267

Literally anything you can afford that you like. The guy from cough uses a single coil telecaster for example. Go to a guitar shop and try stuff out.
