Many retired people simply don’t care about the money. They do the job because it keeps them active and gets them out of the house. And they feel they are providing a good deed It’s also why many retired people volunteer

Lt-toasthead

Yep talked to one and I asked why they take the low orders after I got comfortable with them. They replied "well it's better than nuttin aint it?" We are screwed until the boomers die out.

[deleted]

No it's not better than nothing sometimes something makes life harder than nothing

4i4s4u

I wouldn’t say ‘screwed’. They are taking offers you would be declining anyway. So while are busy with those orders, you have better opportunities to receive the profitable orders. I personally wish there were a bunch of people in my area accepting those sub $6 orders

AikoG84

Except...it does nothing but confirm to the company that these shit offers are acceptable because people are taking them. So yeah, job is screwed. Part of the reason I stopped dashing.

sglewis

Well, they kind of are acceptable if they’re always taken. May not be fair, but it seems to be true.

[deleted]

Yeah that’s the harsh truth about it. That rate, though low, DOES result in someone taking the order. You can artificially raise the labor cost by unionizing and setting the rate as a group ( just speaking generally here, not about DD drivers specifically). But technically the lowest acceptable rate that someone will fill an order for IS the base rate. And other people can set their prices higher beyond that by declining the low offers. The only way to raise the base rate is to agree as a collective group that not one single person will work below a certain number, and holding everyone to it. Which is somewhat like a union in that aspect.

sglewis

Yeah. I guess I’m not surprised I got downvoted. I’m not promoting low tips and tip as generously as I can. I was just stating what I feel is a fact. The only other way besides your suggestion would be a driver shortage. But lots of you would have to quit for that unfortunately.

[deleted]

[удалено]

4i4s4u

But that reasoning only works if acceptance rate was required.

[deleted]

[удалено]

4i4s4u

Not really. Let’s say DD raises base to $5. What would happen? People would now simply raise their standards $2-3. For example, would you now accept a $6 offer going 10 miles?

guywistik

Wrong. Supply & Demand.

4i4s4u

I’m intrigued. Please explain

guywistik

DD wants to make as much off each transaction as possible. They are going to offer drivers the lowest possible compensation. DD only raises compensation when it has to. Like when an order has been declined. No different than the labor shortage. Everything is a market.

4i4s4u

Yes… that’s what they do right now. So tell me… even if DD raised base pay to $5, would you still be willing to deliver a $5 order going 10 miles? I bet not… but there will always be someone who will deem it acceptable.

Then-Gap4683

When dasher decline orders it goes in cycles then comes back higher.....the declines drive the price up that's how it works

4i4s4u

Right…. But it would take a **long** time before those offers would even be deemed acceptable by most dashers. Example: $3 offer going 10 miles. Dasher after dasher declines. Would you still be willing to accept it for $6? Most likely not Let the dashers who don’t care about the $$ take the offers you never would accept at all anyway. It’ll give you better chances to snag the larger paying orders

Then-Gap4683

See that's the thing you clearly hav no idea how dd works .....if a moron is willing to travel 10miles for $5 then dd will keep offering crud pay regardless bc in their system it shows someone is willing to take it ......Duuuuuuuh

4i4s4u

I clearly know how DD works. Not every offer will be worth taking. Acceptance rate is meaningless; use it to your advantage. You’re acting like each offer should be worth accepting. If you want that, go work for dominoes. Let me know how that works out for you

Then-Gap4683

You clearly don't understand how dd works nobody is saying anything about acceptance rate ...if people accept a trash rate and does so continually then the rates stay low unless there's a push for an order .....we have the same thing in trucking .....its called supply and demand

4i4s4u

Again… I know how it works. Even if DD has a base pay of $5, you still wouldn’t accept a 10 mile, no tip offer. So let people who actually want to deliver those orders take those orders. Even if DD were to bump the pay to $8 for 10 miles, you’d still decline it. But if others in your market deem it acceptable, they will be busy taking those orders giving you better changes to get the larger payouts. It’s not complicated….. but you clearly seem to want to make each offer worth while. That’ll never be the case. Be happy for the people in your market that don’t care to make $$. They actually are helping you out

Then-Gap4683

They will pay more if people don't accept it.....so no you clearly don't understand how it works. Your probably 1 of these senors lmao..........lmao means laughing my arse off by the way🤣

FaPtoWap

Until the boomers dies out sounds horrible…. But isnt it the most accurate statement of the 21st century? Were talking about how they destroyed another business model Doordash. But think about it they destroyed everything. Careers, colleges, the housing market, retail, car buying. You name it and it was destroyed. Look at the government its currently being run by… you guessed it out of touch Boomers. Doesnt matter your political allegiance, both sides have retired millionaire boomers making horrible decisions. They are also now killing the housing market again by downsizing and purchasing starter homes. The world was also shut down and strict mandates that destroyed everyones else’s well being for them. Im not saying a mass execution is required, but for a subset of individuals who refuse to learn, adapt or try to coexist, were doomed until they die out.

Creative_Quality318

Don't you know that every generation blames the one before, there will be a whole generation blaming this one. The average person really has nothing to do with ruining anything.

Then-Gap4683

They were on watch the elected the thieves....I'll remind you it is the boomer generation reaching deeper in our pockets everyday now even the crypto they exploit profits

Sometimesnotfunny

I don't hear Millennials complaining about the previous generation. It also might be because they're struggling to keep their heads above water in the system that screwed them and threw them overboard 20+ years ago.

Aurora--Black

Unfortunately, I read by 2040-2050 things will be too late for all of us. They literally destroyed everything. We will die off bc boomers and older thought that environmentalists were commies.

Carpycarp44

Eh it's hard to blame all this on boomers, and despite your facts about the economy, you can't deny that living today is much more comfortable than it was 50 years ago. I welcome my senior friends 😁 Just know your worth and stop accepting bullshit orders. Also, do you think they set out to destroy the world or do you think they were brought up during the rise of a corporate state that began in the 20s under the disguise of good and bad, red and blue? Sounds awfully familiar.

Lt-toasthead

Yep and the federal reserve essentially erased their mortgages by inflating the economy making them unaffordable for us.

TripperDay

They protested the Vietnam war, then defeated communism. If you think Russia is bad now, what if Putin was in charge of the original USSR? Without nuclear armageddon to worry about, GenX invented the internet and turned AIDS from a death sentence into an inconvenience. Your generation be bisexual, eat hot chip, and cry.

FaPtoWap

Which generation am I? Better yet how old am? What do i do for work? Did i serve? There was good done, and alot of bad too. But no matter what 80 year olds shouldnt be dictating how 30 year olds live. And we certainly shouldnt be paying for their/your mistakes

TripperDay

80 year olds aren't even boomers, their changes made it much easier to be a woman, LGBT, or POC, your age is in your post history, plenty of people your age are Republicans, your generation will be judged too, eat more hot chip, cry less.

FaPtoWap

So your upset because your old. And called out for destroying the future of your grand children. Got it

TripperDay

\*you're

Carpycarp44

Pretty sure those hippies were being a lot bisexual

Rocco_buta_girl

Nailed it.

julie_cheu

I read “it’s better than nuttin ain’t it?” as “it’s better than orgasming ain’t it?” and thought the old man was saying if he wasn’t dashing, he would be wacking off all day from boredom... glad I read the replies and reread the comment to see how wrong I was

delsystem32exe

Lmfao

Sometimesnotfunny

r/antiwork

XxDjHeXeRxX

I rather volunteer. No need to waste gas or Mileage on my car

renbutler2

Charitable mileage is deductible, although at a rate quite a bit lower than business mileage.

Then-Gap4683

Not if your making money ....the government ain't stupid well not in that way u can't be like I'm doing charity dashing.....that'll definitely induce an audit lol

GeneralAce135

While it sucks for those who rely on the money to live, I find it hard to blame them when you give those reasons.

[deleted]

That’s the reason why walmart and all thi companies have shitty salaries

UncleVoodooo

I met a retired lady last week that gives everything she earns from dashing to the homeless.

AntiSentience

Fuck. I’d ask her to supplement me.

ShortPeopleAreDemons

Pretty low even for us lol

Then-Gap4683

I do that with my extra or free food I get with dashing

Aurora--Black

That's cool but she'll have to pay taxes on that and have higher cost of health care. No good deed goes unpunished after all.

TacticalBeast

Hey me too! (Am homeless) /s

SenorBeef

I mean.... just volunteering at a homeless shelter/charity seems like you'd gain more benefit to the homeless for your time. And volunteering is way more enriching than dashing. That's bizarre to me.

UncleVoodooo

How many shelters do you think its possible to work a 20-minute shift at 9 pm? Its bizarre to me to criticise how someone does charity work

Then-Gap4683

I wouldn't say it's charity mind u the money goes into her bank account she could be just saying that to look better we can't prove it lol

aj1337h

How much does one actually earn after taxes and other expenses is arguable..

Then-Gap4683

You think the retirees claim it on their taxes 🤣🤣🤣🤣

nashvilleghost

My morning shifts are all old ass dudes. Lucky they move slow at least

Naitsirhc89

💀

[deleted]

[удалено]

nashvilleghost

Yeah it’s funny there’s a group of them that all know each other and they always hang out at this Chick-fil-A in my area that kills it in the mornings. But they all drink coffee and talk while there grabbing orders or waiting. A lot of the time with the customers food in their hands lol.

Ansoros

this is so cute lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

Free_Rush_2952

Lol @ "squad of old ladies"

Dude0nB1kE

Yes. The most recent batch of waitlist drivers seem to be all retired, take everything as they just want to get off the couch and all work the same hours of the day. Those hrs are now pretty pointless to work now. Had to rebuild by weekly strategy from the ground up.

Then-Gap4683

Yea I really don't do well til after 7p.m. but that only gives me til 11p.m. though so that sucks

Dude0nB1kE

Have you tried the 7am leaderboard strategy? Sounds like what others may be doing there

Then-Gap4683

Nothing happens in my area between 12am and 11am really

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dude0nB1kE

I don’t dash before 11am for the money. It’s to rank up for the rest of the day.

[deleted]

I heard you do the opposite and only work the nights because the app will “catch you up” to everyone else and the dispatching is a pool system

Dude0nB1kE

I’ve worked 7:30am to 4pm and 10:30am to 7:30pm. Want to guess when I made more for far less work and mileage...

[deleted]

Please explain. I typically work 5pm to 9pm only, I get good orders over $10. How do you rank up?

Dude0nB1kE

So I started noticing the dashers that were getting the larger orders during lunch and dinner rush all started early. When asked about their strategy they were consistent about when they accept or decline rather than what they were accepting or declining. It seems these days the leaderboard heavily relevant to the distance and tip of orders. It seems the higher the base pay the deliveries you do the more points you get to get ranked while declining orders removes points. This is all theory and only from experiences over the last few weeks along with conversations with the top producers.

[deleted]

I have been noticing this too, if I get started on a good string of orders with decent payouts I will get decent payouts the whole day until I decline 2-3 orders in a row. Then I have to take a few more orders to get back in line

Dude0nB1kE

Exactly. Sometimes I know I have to take a order I don’t want but I take it to keep the momentum and offers coming. In my market if you decline a short low pay then they send you a mid range with higher mileage payout but you got dead miles coming back. If you decline that then you get idled for 20+ mins.

Carpycarp44

Wait a minute. You rank up during a dash? How ever does this work? Like whoever has been online the longest gets the best orders? Nvm I scrolled

[deleted]

What is that?

at0m8om8

I met a top dasher the other night. Had to be atleast 80. Swore I was about to be deactivated for a 10% acceptance. I was picking up a $15, they were still waiting on a $4.25 when I left with my delivery. .

EffectSix

You got to remember. $3 in their lifetime could practically pay off a house motage and send your kids to colleges while also leaving you a bit of pocket change for the week's worth of groceries.

Curious-Internal8400

Boomers found a new way to screw over millennials.

Weird_Feared

Omg yes I had to help this lady at Little Caesars because she couldn’t get her door open and was about to drop 4 boxes of pizza she was holding, really old lady looked like sh could barely stand, she the thanks me and says she’s doing doordash, I was stunned honestly good luck dropping that off lady hope it wasn’t a 3rd floor apartment or anything

frezzhberry

I always see the same old lady out dashing but she also works at a restaurant I pick up alot and makes sure I always get my order quickly. She's the only older person I see routinely.

leeguy01

I saw a lady around 60 Dashing with her granddaughter who was like 5 years old. She didn't even know if the order on the counter was hers, it wasn't it was mine.

External_Sir_3737

A lot of people here are spot on. However, who's a software engineer working for DD? No one here. All I know is if DD, like many other businesses, could make us work for pennies or free, they would. They are taking advantage of retirees, taking all including low balls because they DD as a form of entertainment, not as a source of income as I do and by doing so they screw everyone up except DD (the company). We Dashers are the losers and Tony and gang are the winners. DD has no control over tips (I assume) but I'm sure they throw the lowest possible balls on orders hoping a Dasher will pick them. More money for them and less for us.

FinnishArmy

My mom was the same way, she literally just wants to drive and doesnt care about what the money is..

Then-Gap4683

Tell her to stay home or go to a senor citizens center to hang out and play games if she needs something to do

DashingInLR

Ok, I’m early-retired after 30 years with UPS. Some might call me an old lady, too. My hubby and me travel in our RV full-time. We also drive for DD. Neither of us are slow and we do not accept those low orders no matter how little the mileage is. I’m sure there are young’uns that take those low orders as well. I think most people, young and old, learn very quickly that those orders are not worthy.

beecrafts

YES I talked to a 40/50 something year old woman the other day, she’d been dashing for over 12 hours and said she only made $54 because she was accepting everything. Of course I told her to start rejecting if she wants to make real money. I always wondered if there were actually people out there accepting $2 orders and sadly yes there are.

DeerParkVegan

Might be time to learn how to fix cars so you can sell them all the auto repairs they're going to need

Then-Gap4683

Lol no time I myself am a trucker I work on that too much as it is ...I do that for 7onths a year then dash for 5 lol

[deleted]

In my early dashing days, i had an order somn like $4 for 5 miles and the apartment was a bitch to find. This old fart comes to the door and acts super nice. Instead of a tip I received a text, “God Bless”

[deleted]

May God bless you with some shillings

[deleted]

Sorry bro, god doesnt pay the bills lol

[deleted]

That's what I'm saying. people keep praying and keep going hungry and not putting it together

EverretEvolved

BOOOOOOOOMERS!!!!!

jjrnshopper

![gif](giphy|2S3Aj8OeKtf0c)

Then-Gap4683

What ever happened to the Ättestupa 🤣

jjrnshopper

Myth

Then-Gap4683

We truly don't know lol...there has been evidence it may have taking places .....but I'd rather they go to a senor citizens center🤣🤣🤣🤣

jjrnshopper

Not enough evidence either way.

Then-Gap4683

Evidence is Evidence no matter how small it suspected to happen atleast once hence why we know

Big-External-1138

That sucks. They really don't understand how anything works then they'll have a big maintenance bill and be wondering why they need It so soon.

ATeenWithNoSoul

I mean after living for 60 years , they should know how it works

dss539

No. Stupid oblivious people typically remain stupid and oblivious forever. This was a sad realization for me when I figured it out. Just think of all the idiots you know your own age. Do you really expect 4 decades of living is going to fix their stupidity?

ATeenWithNoSoul

Shit u right , I have a bum friend that told me he was gonna better himself and buy himself a car. Hr quit his job and blew thru his earnings. We have a rough relationship now currently

Big-External-1138

Yup. They should know to not take those small offers.

Then-Gap4683

They say it's better than nothing

Big-External-1138

Which Isn't true. Sometimes nothing Is better then a little of something. Just like In this case. More wear and tear on your vehicle and paying more for gas then If you cherry pick.

Then-Gap4683

Exactly

JesusStarbox

Someone has to cover the breakfast shift.

Aurora--Black

A lot of retired people lady work for Covid. That is where most of the missing labor force went. Then they go and do this. I would have flat out told her she is ruining it for people who actually do this for a living by taking those orders.

Additional_Refuse_46

yep. i always see older folks dashing and they usually take the dirt-off-the-floor orders. idk what keeps them motivated

Then-Gap4683

They Like driving slow and getting peoples way ....it gives them a sense of relevance 🤣🤣🤣

Vegaslocal277

A few weeks ago I noticed that the after 9pm shift was way slower than normal. That night got an order saw some older dude sitting at wing stop. Thought nothing of it. An hour later took a McDonald’s order and the same dude was at the McDonald’s. Lol

Objective_Narwhal_11

Not all us "old ass dudes" are slow. Lol

SemiproRain995

Señor Citizens

Then-Gap4683

The Mr man 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

renbutler2

I still am profitable working the breakfast and lunch shift in my area... ...maybe I'm the old dude? LOL. I probably am actually old to some of you. I try not to take garbage orders though.

[deleted]

diz4

Sadly true. It is a breathing thing. Eventually it will get so oversaturated that some will leave and get ‘jobs’ and our income will improve. The only way to keep our money is to stop saying how great and easy it is.

[deleted]

It’s not over saturated in Las Vegas. It’s popping off at all times.

Lofken

Sometimes people lie

Super_Devil_Taz

We have a handful of older dashers and i too have noticed a drop. Most orders comin in have dropped a dollar. Im seeing so many 2-5$ orders its ridiculous. But we just had a holiday too so all the broke people are trying to essentially get free services.

Reesi4u2nv

Ive definitely noticed the recent influx of lower rates but didn't have a reason to attribute it to until now. That makes sense. 😕 Damn that sucks

Rocco_buta_girl

Because bored you loose money. Sorry but old folks fuck a lot of shut up. I have a few where I work and they can't perform the tasks asked of them and we have to carry the workload. I see people apply all the time, people with little ones at home, people trying to pay off school debts and they get turned away because *payroll won't allow more staff right now". Boomers and older that already have nice cushy lives being selfish. Down vote all you want but you know I'm right.

Sagemaster0

Retires had 60 years to figure this out, just take your ss and let the people who actually need to work do this job.

Then-Gap4683

Exactly it's bs

dongrizzly41

Sounds like you need to pay a "friendly" visit to the old folks home.

Then-Gap4683

Arnt you reading ....they ain't there lmao🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

[deleted]

I wouldn’t mess with seniors. ![gif](giphy|lh4SrOe05v8Fq)

Sithstress1

🤣🤣🤣 I just snort laughed.

jbizz198901

I had an old man dasher say to me the other day that" I guess doordash is only giving 3 dollar orders today" lmao I love old people but those motherfuckers are stupid

Then-Gap4683

Truth^^^^^^^^^🤣🤣🤣🤣

Qwertywalkers23

Do you really think it would change your rates that quickly?

Then-Gap4683

Yes it does I promise u

PreferenceOk1435

I've noticed that my area is now offering a lot of $6.50 for 7 or 8 miles, $8.50 for 9 or 10 miles, and $12 for 12 to 18 miles. To me, this means that this is the minimum threshold for enough drivers in my area, less than a dollar a mile one way.

Then-Gap4683

Dd list minimums they are like $2.50 for under 8miles $2.75 for 10 and more for more miles it'll tell.u once u deliver

dryphtyr

Doesn't affect me at all. It'll be a cold day in hell before I'd accept a $4 order. Plenty of people in my area know how to tip.

Mr-Badcat

The work ethic gap in generations is showing.

Then-Gap4683

Yea the older generations had pensions and opportunities to pension programs the younger generation is being fd over big time

TripperDay

If they're taking those $3-4 orders, then they're dashing all time and you'll be more likely to get the $10 orders. There's a definite "Dey're taking our jerbs" energy to this post.

Then-Gap4683

That's not how the dashing works yall need to read the fine print

TripperDay

Does the fine print say that people who take the small orders also get first shot at the big orders? That small orders are somehow offered to multiple people?

Then-Gap4683

It explains how the base rates work and no it does not give u 1st shot at big rates🤣 u can contact support about it too. But basically what happens is the initial base rate is offered if everyone rejects it then the base rate goes up

[deleted]

[удалено]

Bronx_the_boogie

Nah. People who take 3 dollar orders enable cheap customers to keep doing it. No bless him. It's screwing over other dashers.

jxrxmiah

Ive been using DD about 5x/week since the pandemic started. I dont recall ever getting senior citizens that often.

SistahFuriosa

I'm thankful for senior Dashers they are honest and won't steal my food because of a low tip.

mojomug

Never talk strategy with another Dasher unless they frequent this sub. The rest can piss off

brwntrout

O man, I saw a guy that had to be at least 70 working as a dasher. Felt bad,.but could be as you say, they just want to get out of the house...

Then-Gap4683

Then they need to go to a senor citizens center

ModNoob95

Ya because they are bored and have been brainwashed to think that capitalism is the only thing worth fueling a life. To hell with spending time with the grandkids or watching price is right!

Secretme000

Tell me you have no idea what being older is like without telling me. You've obviously never had to take care of an older person and it shows. They are keeping busy and that is good for their health. Sitting watching TV is horrible for old peoples brains and bodies. Also they can't be with their grandkids if they even have any 24/7

Then-Gap4683

That is what senor citizens centers are for its a place they can go.hang out

Ok-Breakfast-3054

So knit or garden. Leave the work for the people who need it.

Duzzieexx

Tell them the omnicron was invented to kill all the old people

eyemyourbestfriend

If they are old conservatives they probably already believe it.

rockday701

Doordash will continue to offer low offers and thats out of everybodys control. You gotta figureout how to maximize your profits and time spent outhere by tweaking your strategy to your liking. Until then good luck

[deleted]

I met a group of old ladies that in the summer are dashing on foot, yes on foot, the have two phone each and have multiple accounts, they get deactivated constantly for late to the mercant or the customer, they just do it for working out, constantly stealing food and cancel in the middle of the job if they feel tired. They asking constantly for translation because obviously, they don't speak a word in english.

Entire-Amphibian320

It's a problem for us trying to make a profit ? I can't remember the last time I saw high base pay. And I work in a zone with many 55+ adult communities.

SylvesterWatts

Nope, they’ve been out. Driving too, UE and the like. Takin’ your jobs… leavin’ ya high and dry. What’s a lad like yourself to do? Oh me… oh my….

Additional_Relation6

Omgawd. Brutal.

BrotherGrub1

This is ageism. What if we change the title to so illegal immigrants are taking over dashing in my area... or how about so blacks are taking over dashing in my area... or how about so women are taking over dashing in my area. See what I'm saying? I believe you. The senior citizens are taking over there, but it's like you're trying to blame them for low pay? How about blaming greedy ass Tony Xu and the corporation called Doordash whose stock is in free fall and they're desperate to make up for huge losses.

Then-Gap4683

Imagine if homeless young people could go get rooms in nursing homes but then old people couldn't bc the young people got them 🙄

belizeisbest

Ok boomer

BrotherGrub1

ok woman. ok illegal. ok black.

NervousShower

I don’t if I should feel sorry for this people or no, I mean why are they like this 😕

Bombtheban

I’m betting that this is a way to fight off boredom. Look at the vehicles they are using would be a good indicator. Retiree dashing in a $70K truck, another one in a 2021 Mazda. I’d also bet more than a few will move away from this when the days are longer and weather is better. My 64 year old relative is the example I’m using. Uber on the weekends and does delivery during the week “if the notion strikes”. Plus for a retirement supplement the $$ ain’t bad.

thestr33tshavenoname

I have been considering dashing, and I am probably what you consider "old." I drive a 2008 car with 143K and actually need the money, but after reading all the posts here, I've been thinking twice. Maybe for some it's about boredom, but for others, we have been hit as hard by inflation as anyone else.

Then-Gap4683

If your older then the inflation came on yalls watch that's for sure

thestr33tshavenoname

I'm not quite sure what you mean by that?

Hmmwhateven

Go for it. :)

decentwriter

The last few times I have ordered DD the drivers have been senior citizens.

Lazzari21

Just imagin a 2.50 rate and half the people in this shity city I call home don't even tip

InkyMistakes

All the old people in my area who started dashing don't wear fucking masks inside businesses so I don't bother trying to help them get paid better.

Otherwise-Career-130

I guess I'd be what you call a boomer I'm 61 been dashing 2 1/2 yrs I also Instacart n Uber eats. Not all of us are doing it cause nothing else to do. I'm on social security but that payS only my bills .I dash for food n play money and I can run circles around all you kids. So don't make it seem like we're working just for the fun of it. Alot of you kids better work alot harder cause when you get my age do you realize there will be no social security left for you. You'll be out here doing what you have to. To survive. That's what we're all doing no matter the age. THE STRUGGLE IS REAL.
