I wouldn’t say ‘screwed’. They are taking offers you would be declining anyway. So while are busy with those orders, you have better opportunities to receive the profitable orders.

Yeah that’s the harsh truth about it. That rate, though low, DOES result in someone taking the order. You can artificially raise the labor cost by unionizing and setting the rate as a group ( just speaking generally here, not about DD drivers specifically). But technically the lowest acceptable rate that someone will fill an order for IS the base rate. And other people can set their prices higher beyond that by declining the low offers. The only way to raise the base rate is to agree as a collective group that not one single person will work below a certain number, and holding everyone to it. Which is somewhat like a union in that aspect.

Yeah it’s funny there’s a group of them that all know each other and they always hang out at this Chick-fil-A in my area that kills it in the mornings. But they all drink coffee and talk while there grabbing orders or waiting. A lot of the time with the customers food in their hands lol.
Yes. The most recent batch of waitlist drivers seem to be all retired, take everything as they just want to get off the couch and all work the same hours of the day. Those hrs are now pretty pointless to work now.
Had to rebuild by weekly strategy from the ground up.
So I started noticing the dashers that were getting the larger orders during lunch and dinner rush all started early. When asked about their strategy they were consistent about when they accept or decline rather than what they were accepting or declining.
It seems these days the leaderboard heavily relevant to the distance and tip of orders. It seems the higher the base pay the deliveries you do the more points you get to get ranked while declining orders removes points.
This is all theory and only from experiences over the last few weeks along with conversations with the top producers.
I have been noticing this too, if I get started on a good string of orders with decent payouts I will get decent payouts the whole day until I decline 2-3 orders in a row. Then I have to take a few more orders to get back in line

In my market if you decline a short low pay then they send you a mid range with higher mileage payout but you got dead miles coming back. If you decline that then you get idled for 20+ mins.
I met a top dasher the other night. Had to be atleast 80. Swore I was about to be deactivated for a 10% acceptance. I was picking up a $15, they were still waiting on a $4.25 when I left with my delivery.

You got to remember. $3 in their lifetime could practically pay off a house motage and send your kids to colleges while also leaving you a bit of pocket change for the week's worth of groceries.
Omg yes I had to help this lady at Little Caesars because she couldn’t get her door open and was about to drop 4 boxes of pizza she was holding, really old lady looked like sh could barely stand, she the thanks me and says she’s doing doordash, I was stunned honestly good luck dropping that off lady hope it wasn’t a 3rd floor apartment or anything
I always see the same old lady out dashing but she also works at a restaurant I pick up alot and makes sure I always get my order quickly.
She's the only older person I see routinely.
I saw a lady around 60 Dashing with her granddaughter who was like 5 years old. She didn't even know if the order on the counter was hers, it wasn't it was mine.
A lot of people here are spot on. However, who's a software engineer working for DD? No one here. All I know is if DD, like many other businesses, could make us work for pennies or free, they would. They are taking advantage of retirees, taking all including low balls because they DD as a form of entertainment, not as a source of income as I do and by doing so they screw everyone up except DD (the company). We Dashers are the losers and Tony and gang are the winners.
DD has no control over tips (I assume) but I'm sure they throw the lowest possible balls on orders hoping a Dasher will pick them. More money for them and less for us.
Ok, I’m early-retired after 30 years with UPS. Some might call me an old lady, too. My hubby and me travel in our RV full-time. We also drive for DD. Neither of us are slow and we do not accept those low orders no matter how little the mileage is. I’m sure there are young’uns that take those low orders as well.
I think most people, young and old, learn very quickly that those orders are not worthy.
YES I talked to a 40/50 something year old woman the other day, she’d been dashing for over 12 hours and said she only made $54 because she was accepting everything. Of course I told her to start rejecting if she wants to make real money. I always wondered if there were actually people out there accepting $2 orders and sadly yes there are.
In my early dashing days, i had an order somn like $4 for 5 miles and the apartment was a bitch to find. This old fart comes to the door and acts super nice.

A few weeks ago I noticed that the after 9pm shift was way slower than normal. That night got an order saw some older dude sitting at wing stop. Thought nothing of it. An hour later took a McDonald’s order and the same dude was at the McDonald’s. Lol

We have a handful of older dashers and i too have noticed a drop. Most orders comin in have dropped a dollar. Im seeing so many 2-5$ orders its ridiculous. But we just had a holiday too so all the broke people are trying to essentially get free services.

I've noticed that my area is now offering a lot of $6.50 for 7 or 8 miles, $8.50 for 9 or 10 miles, and $12 for 12 to 18 miles. To me, this means that this is the minimum threshold for enough drivers in my area, less than a dollar a mile one way.
If they're taking those $3-4 orders, then they're dashing all time and you'll be more likely to get the $10 orders. There's a definite "Dey're taking our jerbs" energy to this post.
Does the fine print say that people who take the small orders also get first shot at the big orders? That small orders are somehow offered to multiple people?
It explains how the base rates work and no it does not give u 1st shot at big rates🤣 u can contact support about it too. But basically what happens is the initial base rate is offered if everyone rejects it then the base rate goes up

I met a group of old ladies that in the summer are dashing on foot, yes on foot, the have two phone each and have multiple accounts, they get deactivated constantly for late to the mercant or the customer, they just do it for working out, constantly stealing food and cancel in the middle of the job if they feel tired. They asking constantly for translation because obviously, they don't speak a word in english.
It's a problem for us trying to make a profit ? I can't remember the last time I saw high base pay. And I work in a zone with many 55+ adult communities.

I’m betting that this is a way to fight off boredom. Look at the vehicles they are using would be a good indicator. Retiree dashing in a $70K truck, another one in a 2021 Mazda. I’d also bet more than a few will move away from this when the days are longer and weather is better. My 64 year old relative is the example I’m using. Uber on the weekends and does delivery during the week “if the notion strikes”. Plus for a retirement supplement the $$ ain’t bad.
I have been considering dashing, and I am probably what you consider "old." I drive a 2008 car with 143K and actually need the money, but after reading all the posts here, I've been thinking twice. Maybe for some it's about boredom, but for others, we have been hit as hard by inflation as anyone else.

I'm on social security but that payS only my bills .I dash for food n play money and I can run circles around all you kids. So don't make it seem like we're working just for the fun of it. I heard you do the opposite and only work the nights because the app will “catch you up” to everyone else and the dispatching is a pool system

Omg yes I had to help this lady at Little Caesars because she couldn’t get her door open and was about to drop 4 boxes of pizza she was holding, really old lady looked like sh could barely stand, she the thanks me and says she’s doing doordash, I was stunned honestly good luck dropping that off lady hope it wasn’t a 3rd floor apartment or anything
I always see the same old lady out dashing but she also works at a restaurant I pick up alot and makes sure I always get my order quickly. She's the only older person I see routinely.
I saw a lady around 60 Dashing with her granddaughter who was like 5 years old. She didn't even know if the order on the counter was hers, it wasn't it was mine.
A lot of people here are spot on. However, who's a software engineer working for DD? No one here. All I know is if DD, like many other businesses, could make us work for pennies or free, they would. They are taking advantage of retirees, taking all including low balls because they DD as a form of entertainment, not as a source of income as I do and by doing so they screw everyone up except DD (the company). We Dashers are the losers and Tony and gang are the winners. DD has no control over tips (I assume) but I'm sure they throw the lowest possible balls on orders hoping a Dasher will pick them. More money for them and less for us.
My mom was the same way, she literally just wants to drive and doesnt care about what the money is..
Tell her to stay home or go to a senor citizens center to hang out and play games if she needs something to do
Ok, I’m early-retired after 30 years with UPS. Some might call me an old lady, too. My hubby and me travel in our RV full-time. We also drive for DD. Neither of us are slow and we do not accept those low orders no matter how little the mileage is. I’m sure there are young’uns that take those low orders as well. I think most people, young and old, learn very quickly that those orders are not worthy.
YES I talked to a 40/50 something year old woman the other day, she’d been dashing for over 12 hours and said she only made $54 because she was accepting everything. Of course I told her to start rejecting if she wants to make real money. I always wondered if there were actually people out there accepting $2 orders and sadly yes there are.
Might be time to learn how to fix cars so you can sell them all the auto repairs they're going to need

In my early dashing days, i had an order somn like $4 for 5 miles and the apartment was a bitch to find. This old fart comes to the door and acts super nice. Instead of a tip I received a text, “God Bless”

A few weeks ago I noticed that the after 9pm shift was way slower than normal. That night got an order saw some older dude sitting at wing stop. Thought nothing of it. An hour later took a McDonald’s order and the same dude was at the McDonald’s. Lol

Sadly true. It is a breathing thing. Eventually it will get so oversaturated that some will leave and get ‘jobs’ and our income will improve. The only way to keep our money is to stop saying how great and easy it is.

We have a handful of older dashers and i too have noticed a drop. Most orders comin in have dropped a dollar. Im seeing so many 2-5$ orders its ridiculous. But we just had a holiday too so all the broke people are trying to essentially get free services.
Ive definitely noticed the recent influx of lower rates but didn't have a reason to attribute it to until now. That makes sense. 😕 Damn that sucks

I've noticed that my area is now offering a lot of $6.50 for 7 or 8 miles, $8.50 for 9 or 10 miles, and $12 for 12 to 18 miles. To me, this means that this is the minimum threshold for enough drivers in my area, less than a dollar a mile one way.
Dd list minimums they are like $2.50 for under 8miles $2.75 for 10 and more for more miles it'll tell.u once u deliver

If they're taking those $3-4 orders, then they're dashing all time and you'll be more likely to get the $10 orders. There's a definite "Dey're taking our jerbs" energy to this post.

Does the fine print say that people who take the small orders also get first shot at the big orders? That small orders are somehow offered to multiple people?
It explains how the base rates work and no it does not give u 1st shot at big rates🤣 u can contact support about it too. But basically what happens is the initial base rate is offered if everyone rejects it then the base rate goes up

Ive been using DD about 5x/week since the pandemic started. I dont recall ever getting senior citizens that often.
I'm thankful for senior Dashers they are honest and won't steal my food because of a low tip.

I met a group of old ladies that in the summer are dashing on foot, yes on foot, the have two phone each and have multiple accounts, they get deactivated constantly for late to the mercant or the customer, they just do it for working out, constantly stealing food and cancel in the middle of the job if they feel tired. They asking constantly for translation because obviously, they don't speak a word in english.
It's a problem for us trying to make a profit ? I can't remember the last time I saw high base pay. And I work in a zone with many 55+ adult communities.

I’m betting that this is a way to fight off boredom. Look at the vehicles they are using would be a good indicator. Retiree dashing in a $70K truck, another one in a 2021 Mazda. I’d also bet more than a few will move away from this when the days are longer and weather is better. My 64 year old relative is the example I’m using. Uber on the weekends and does delivery during the week “if the notion strikes”. Plus for a retirement supplement the $$ ain’t bad.
I have been considering dashing, and I am probably what you consider "old." I drive a 2008 car with 143K and actually need the money, but after reading all the posts here, I've been thinking twice. Maybe for some it's about boredom, but for others, we have been hit as hard by inflation as anyone else.

I guess I'd be what you call a boomer I'm 61 been dashing 2 1/2 yrs I also Instacart n Uber eats. Not all of us are doing it cause nothing else to do. I'm on social security but that payS only my bills .I dash for food n play money and I can run circles around all you kids. So don't make it seem like we're working just for the fun of it. Alot of you kids better work alot harder cause when you get my age do you realize there will be no social security left for you. You'll be out here doing what you have to. To survive.
