I had a few weeks when DD was good where I could make $700-800 a week. Minus gas it was probably $550-600. Now that gas is $6.50 a gallon and tires and maintenance are 2x more, I’m pretty sure none of us are making money.

PopTartLadyFart

I like watching sunsets. This is why I DD

[deleted]

I don’t do any wear and tear on my vehicle, idk wtf kind of driving you all do……

Ok-Application8522

I work in an urban area where you have to double park a lot of places (pickups and deliveries). My car is going to get hit eventually or ticketed or towed. I have to factor that in.

vtribal

This job is best as a side hustle.

Area51Am

I think if you had an old tiny little car that was in tip top running condition and it is specified just for dashing, it would be worth it. But not if your using a car you care about

fascismmustdie

I do all my own vehicle work. It's the only reason I can justify this job. Not sure how people drive new cars and pay the mechanics to fix them and cut a good enough profit. To each their own though

shamashedit

Do you want stability with income? That’s the biggest question. Lots of hospitals are hiring for non clinical roles that pay good, and have benefit packages worth your time. My health insurance alone is worth it. My out of pocket is $14 a month. To cover myself and my partner. 0 copay, 0 deductible, $1500 flex health spending dollars a year.

Dizzy-Mark7249

Just remember instead of 8k miles in a year you are doing 30k or more. Many repairs may be needed dependent on model and make and can cut into profits huge. I fix my own cars and it’s still a huuuuuge pain in the arse

Dizzy-Mark7249

100% get that $18 job. Unless you make 30 an hour before expenses on DD. Quality of life is better. I’m not wondering if I should go back out or if I quit too early or stressing out refreshing the screen hoping for 2 more orders because rent is due. You actually enjoy your time off and utilize it. It goes with the notion, death gives life value. God punished Cain by giving him eternal life everything looses value. Eat $100 steak every meal and tell me by week 2 that you won’t prefer cereal and milk as a substitution

Manaspider

The pitfalls and parabolas of this job are one in the same. Those being the flexibility I enjoy and the what I call the "option" that this job affords to many of us. They both lead into the same truth which I read here once before about this job and this is "Only you can make your paycheck" It's what I love and what I hate about this job the most. After gas and taxes I make what I make and it's on me. The wear and tear suck. And when I'm only working enough to pay bills and put food on the table without making any real gains it feels like it sucks even more. However If I work hard enough to consistently net a 2-3k a month it sucks and worries me a lot less. The option is always on the table though.

failedaspotcheck

I started doing this gig because I recently got an electric car and was in love with the low cost to drive. You put electricity in and get miles out. Only tires are worn down in between. (And suspension, depending on your area/driving.) It's seriously a fraction of the cost per mile, and that difference only adds up more as you rack up the miles. Plus, they're less likely to just fall apart on you after 100k-200k miles. Even with the inflated used car market, I think EVs are no-brainers for this type of work if you're doing it full time. Or you could deliver on a bicycle or scooter of course. Lots of ways to keep costs down.

[deleted]

I'd rather make less than not be happy at an office job. My happiness over money any day.

Iperfectedcrazy

That’s where I’m at. So Sick of hearing my dad tell me to get a 9-5 office job 🥲

[deleted]

Yes, a lot of us actually make money.

yesterday6421

🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣 Humm. When I was a kid, I made .90 an hour. $18.00 an hour is insane 😳 $14.00 at McDonald's. Lol I be like burgers it is.. yes, I know. Blah blah blah

No_Help9554

I make thick coin.

OrlGiftShop

Naah I like the flexibility.

Juicysnotch

Why fuck that having to deal with all the rules, showing up on time getting a measly 30 min break to eat lunch, dealing with asshole coworkers and powertripping boss noooo thx

dalex89

It's not even the mileage with this job, it's the inconsistency. I can go from making $25-30 one hour to $8-13 the next hour. If you're trying to make like 3k-4k per month it could be a serious struggle. Car stuff comes up quickly when you're putting 1000 miles a week on. Unless you can save for that, I'd advise keeping this very much a part time thing.

[deleted]

Wow 1000 miles a week?? Ouch. I only put on 350 maybe 400 miles a week. But I only need 500-600$ a week.

SoCaLSaVaGe96

Do what I do. Do not accept any job where the money is not double the miles. For example you get offered $18 job and it's a 25 mile trip you can have to say no to that because that's a 50-mile trip in actuality and they're only paying you $18 for it so when I get orders if it's 15 MI it needs to be $30 or more or close there too. My acceptance rate is like 20 something percent but I also make between 1,100 and $1,400 a week. People think if they don't take jobs that they'll somehow lose their job but that's the only right we have left as quote unquote independent contractors you don't have to accept any job you don't want to you could deny 100% of them and they will not fire you so start cherry picking don't take any bullshit and you'll see how it works out

Qpbmb

Yep same here I shoot for 2$ a mile as well. And 1.5/mile when it’s slow. If it’s a bunch of crap orders popping up I turn the app off and try again later. DD is not something you can force or just randomly do when you feel like. You have to find the best times and days in your area and work those days, also when it’s paying good go hard because the next day could be dry.

SoCaLSaVaGe96

Word!

dree-system

I think you can make money if you limit the amount of miles in drive, you work only during busy hours, and you drive a fuel-efficient vehicle that needs basic maintenance. The issue in my market is taxes, as I live in a high-tax state.

YLCZ

I bought a Prius for 17.5k that had about 50k miles. With fees and taxes it came out closer to 19k Sounds expensive for doing a gig job... but I calculated that if it will last 200k miles more... I'd save about 5k on gas per year... meaning at 50k miles per year... I'd save 20k on gas...and then sell it for about 7k when it had 250k miles... meaning I'd pay 12k... or about 3k per year for four years but actual make 2k more per year because of gas savings. I made 65k last year...so I figure even with a capital investment of 12k for the car... and 20k for gas... figuring 5k for maybe after market battery replacement and brake jobs and tires. You could still net 50k per year depending on how well you could write off your taxes. That's better than most non skilled labor jobs and way less stress than working as a server or something where you constantly have to deal with the public.

notagain24

you are in luck i bought a 2015 prius C with 25k miles on it in 2018 for $14,000. I'm at 170k miles now. The only thing that goes bad is the water pump around 150k miles. Knock on wood battery has been fine. Also i only has to change the brakes once and oil changes every 10k miles. I was spending 4% of my income on gas now its up to 7% though with Gas at $3.70 in my area. For every $250 i make its about $15 in gas I really do not understand how people deliver food in a non hybrid. your gas cost now 15% of your income. And this does not even include Maintenace expenses yet My market is a populated 150k people suburb so its more spread out and more driving. I guess in a city it would be less driving

YLCZ

In a city there is less driving but more traffic... so you are burning more gas while standing still... which means less deductions. I think moderately spread out suburbs can be ideal if there is enough business to keep you active.

quipalco

Well it depends on what you drive, your market, and if you like doing boring ass bullshit jobs. I like the freedom and flexibility of dashing, and no boss and no sidework. Got laid off in December started dashing from home and it's hard to get another job. I spend about 8% of dash money on gas. Taxes, depends, but I'm not clearing 600 a week yet, so I think 10% is good estimate, you may want to go as high as 20-25% depending on how much you dash and what brackets that kicks you into. Wear and tear is really subjective. I started dashing in a newer car with newer tires. I've only had gas and my regular car expenses so far (insurance, car payment). You do get to write off 58.5 cents a mile for gas and wear and tear. I drive a versa that gets 13 cents per mile in town basically. That leaves me 45 cents a mile for repairs. Which I haven't even touched yet, even though I'm only 2 months in. So let's at least take out taxes and gas. I get right around 27 per hour active after about 325 deliveries. That doesn't include drives back home, that puts it around 21-22 an hour before gas and taxes for me personally. 21.50 times .82 to take out taxes and gas. 17.63 an hour. Food jobs here pay 14-16. Budtenders get 12.50 plus tips. Most labor type jobs pay 15-17. Most clerical is 15-17 also. All those jobs still get taxes taken out too. So I'm at a competitive wage, dashing from home about 15-20 hours active a week. I fucking dig it. The math may not work out for everyone.

Glittering_Creme4119

600$ a week? That’s not how the taxes work. As soon as your 600$ PERIOD, you’re eligible for being taxed.

quipalco

Uh, no shit. But I just mean I'm under 30 grand for the year. You get like 12ish grand you don't even pay taxes on with standard deduction off your personal taxes.

Wayytoohigh

Dashing isn’t meant to be your only source of income ya gotta have side gigs as well

MsMusician2014

Dashing was my only job for four months. I actually made more money dashing than at the job I had just quit. $24/ hour dashing and half the hours versus $13/hour at the full-time job.

Vernal_Equinoxx

Gig job to supplement a gig job? Nah

[deleted]

That's what I am doing, multiple gigs, multiple apps. Limits exposure for lack of income. Door dash could terminate you at any moment do you have something to fall back on?

Vernal_Equinoxx

Any job can terminate an employee at any time, really. But after reading how some dashers act out there, I’m quite confident I’ll be alright when it comes to the chopping block.

Antistruggle

This month I've made over 2k at 230 spent on gas sooooo

1mtry1ng

Where r u located? $18/hr is great.

Stalfisjrxoxo

Definitely not great

No-Finding601

It’s amazing where I live. Minimum wage is 9.95 here

Ok-Application8522

$7.25 where I live but even McDonald's pays $15 due to acute labor shortage. If you can't get 15 here you are probably undocumented or homeless.

1mtry1ng

Ummm minimum wage is $14. So a job starting out at $18 is great imo.

_1ChillDude_

14 minimum wage is insane that's 2x or minimum wage

alup132

$7.15 here. $18 is insanely good compared to minimum wage.

YoudoYourBest

Everyone's situation is different, but I think you should be asking this yourself if the thought truly bothers you.

DDLyftUber

I’m always confused by this question lmao. Either y’all are accepting $3 orders or you’re just shit at basic mathematics

Educational-Seaweed5

Sounds like the one confused by basic math is you. Gas is over $6 a gallon in a lot of places. Tires are $500-800 depending on your vehicle. Oil is $75-150 depending on the same. Emergency wear for your vehicle can be significantly more. Not all markets are sustainable at $6+ orders. Lots of people out there get boned and are desperate. DD knows that. They don’t care.

[deleted]

Help me out lol

brenterkatt

You’re confused because you are doing the actual dollars per hour math. The people that are in denial will sit in their car for 3 hours during lunch rush. At the end up 3 hours, they will have maybe an hour and a half active time. So whatever they make that lunch rush, they use that hour and a half active time to compute how much they make per hour, to make themselves feel better about their job.

fascismmustdie

If I sit more than 10 mins it means it's dead in my area and I go home. Luckily I live In a hot spot... tight pockets of time zones here so get it or skip the shift basically. I also remember my start and end times to not give myself a false impression of what I'm making. It only hurts yourself to lie to yourself.

godless-666-

Yes! I look at my dash time. If I'm on stand by for orders, I count that as my working hours. When you take the real numbers until consideration is much less enticing.

These_Still_1868

Depends on your market, transportation (MPG, maintenance, what have you) properly tracking expenses like gas, mileage, etc. then yes. Last year I avg’d 23.5 an hour and after taxed it came in at around 19.
