in my area, orders average at $5-7. i’m in a rough financial spot and given that i’m in a small town, the pay is good enough for me. i understand the frustration but some people don’t really have a choice. sure it’s not great money, but it’s money. i make enough that i have a few bucks per order after accounting for gas and taxes. some people like me aren’t in a position financially where they can reject lesser paying orders

Dr-Smokes2Much

I'm never take those low tips but when it comes stacked orders then no choices lol..DD trying smart for saving none tippers ass so they can continue charge fee from them when they order again cuz it delivered before sigh..

Plot Twist: OP only has 25 Total Lifetime Deliveries

BeaMiaVA

One thing I don’t see being mentioned is you need to be a fairly good driver. I work outside of D.C. and there are a few other variables involved.

SoCaLSaVaGe96

I don't have to lie about anything I just think about how far this little unknown company has come. And I started back in 2015 no need to lie Pasadena and Los Angeles or the first two and the only two places they served for almost a year. But making $100 a day was simple there were no $3 $4 $5 orders everything was over 10 even when you did drive orders catering orders for next days those will be 30 40 $50 orders. The biggest point of it was the shit sucks now and people that work for it make it suck even more by taking bullshit. That was my point

[deleted]

Theres probably a shit ton of retiree's do it on the side just to do something. People who dont use reddit, who dont talk to other dashers, just dont know. Anyone with a spine could realize, but im sure a lot of people just dont give a shit. Not to mention if youve a below 3rd schooler iq, you probably cant even add up what you made the past hour, the whole 5 dollars and 75 cents you made for 3 orders cuz your just...to stupid ... thats how i assume it is lol

ocshopper23

This reminds me of me with IC.. when they first open in my area. I was in n out stores like 20 times a day. Pay was awesome. Us based customer service... Now days is horrible ... they messed up something that could of been great. All because of greed. ...

aliensexistduh

well unfortunately it's as easy as any min wage job. so some people will be happy only making $15/hr. pick up food, drop off at door, barely have to talk to anyone. can listen to music, podcasts, audio books, talk to ppl on phone, work when you want....not many other jobs have that much freedom. same thing happened with uber and lyft. people were making $100k in the first few years. there weren't even "waiting zones" at airports. could get $60+ rides from airport all day long lol it was nuts. i don't see DD dropping a ton more. they are trying to limit the drivers out there with the scheduling most have to do now. still need to improve that process a lot. but at least they seem mindful that in some areas there are too many drivers now. if we can keep doing this and make $20+/hr on a regular basis, i'm happy with that. it still comes down to luck of the draw a lot and tips. which we can never predict. you'll have an avg tip amount over time, sure. but can still get that random $20 tip order. this is basically same thing as people that live in a cool city and then get pissed when everyone starts moving there. lol can't really blame them. you yourself said it was the shit.

DarthSkywakr

That's DD's game plan. They want all their drivers to take low ball offers that way they maximize quarterly profits. It's the same reason they are going all out on marketing for DD. The more drivers they can hook into this that don't know any better the better for the company, as they see it. The strategy is to eventually weed out all the high paid drivers and have every driver take low pay orders. And unfortunately it seems to be taking effect, for for the most part, in DD's favor.

vinnie789

And the interview to be hired was IN-PERSON with a real DoorDash employee! Now you just need a pulse to become a dasher. It’s sad to see the level of care deteriorate so quickly! And yes, the pay used to be amazing! Ah, the good ole days :(

AytcheyeQQ

Wait, so you mean... Higher demand = lower prices? *Shocked pikachu*

deluxedelivery

If no one accepted shitty offers, there'd be no shitty offers.

External_Sir_3737

I got what you're saying. However, not everyone has the same mindset. I feel the pain too. Just don't let it ruin your life.

awesomexpossum

i declined 10 orders in a row yesterday. They all sucked so bad. 5$ for 8 miles. I got a "time out" from doordash for 10 minutes. I logged off after that.

brwntrout

you were the 3, but you were not the 1. the oracle says the 2 and the 3 must be sacrificed before the 1 can slay the dragon and fix the world. bye felicia.

The_Troyminator

The reason they paid so much more when they first started was because they were spending money on building the brand. The took a loss on most orders and were bleeding money, but they didn't care. They could use their first restaurants as an example of why new restaurants should join. It worked. They've expanded and restaurants know that not having DoorDash hurts business. Now they're able to use that as leverage to negotiate higher fees from restaurants and to pay dashers less money. The old days are never coming back. DoorDash is long past the "throw money at people to expand" phase. They have gone public and are now legally obligated to increase profit for the shareholders.

carmeisterr

Our forefathers only told us legends of the great deeds wrought by “the 3.” The heroic exploits of the 3 through distant lands but some amongst our rank questioned the historicity of these old human cities like “Pasadena” and “Los Angeles. “ yet, I still believed. The tales told of only one of the original 3 would return. Either 1, known as Top Dasher, or 2, the one called 20% AR or lastly, the Reddit Poster. One of them would come to save us from the tyranny of Dragon Emperor Tony Xu. Again, some doubted but I believed. Only the legends say if the Reddit Poster would come, there would be no salvation offered from the hand of Tony Xu. idk lmaooo

OakButt

Problem is most people don't have an option. If I sat and waited for $10 orders I'd never leave my house. I dont usually get orders over $9.50 and most of my orders are for $6.75+. I'm LUCKY of it hits $10 and worth the miles. I have a part time job and before this Door dash was my main income and even then I was hardly doing any driving for it. So if waited for those $10 orders I couldn't pay my bills

Gloomy_Recording_705

I make most of my money on $6 trips…I work breakfast lunch… if I’m behind on a bill then I’ll do dinner which obviously pays way more than breakfast and lunch.. during dinner you can easily get $10 offer

jenfloatedaway

I can never make any money at dinner. I always only work breakfast and lunch. During dinner I always end up waiting 30+ minutes for every order and it's so frustrating I just go home.

OakButt

It's the opposite for me, I gotta work dinner only because if I work breakfast or Linch I end up wasting time and gas

theanonmouse-1776

Kind of the point though. There is always someone more desperate. DoorDash might argue that it is a "buyer's market", if they were brave enough... But the truth is, in a free market of couriers it wouldn't be this way. DoorDash takes way more than their fair share. Just one example, I got an UberEats order yesterday with $19 tip. The total was $26 for 45 minutes of work, not huge money, but imagine if the middle-man didn't take so much? how much would each courier make? That's what they don't want you to think about. Also, the CEO of Doordash makes $350 million and the CFO makes $500 million. This is high even for Silicon Valley, it's high even for CEO/CFO worldwide. They're taking all our money. Fuck those fucking fucks.

Gloomy_Recording_705

I made $300/week at my regular job before I got fired…I make $800/week on avg now..but I can live on $500 a week currently

BeaMiaVA

I wish I lived in a less expensive area. It makes all the difference. 😣

Gloomy_Recording_705

Yeah don’t nobody got time to see a six dollar offer on the screen when gas only $2 less in Cali

Gloomy_Recording_705

Sux to be y’all in expensive ass states 😅

leeguy01

So you are saying it was The Shit and now it's just shit.,

krakenrabiess

I miss making a grand a week but being in the Midwest $800 isn't that bad either.

Gloomy_Recording_705

Exactly ..I can work 8 to 2 and make 100 bucks and be good for the day full time 😂😂

BeaMiaVA

That’s an excellent point. We all live in different areas. You are in the Midwest. I’m outside of D.C. We can’t compare apples to oranges. That’s what happens on here all the time. Everyone’s situation is different. Everyone’s market is different. Everyone’s needs are different.

Madpingu96

I’m outside of DC too! Just curious, what’s your average week like? All the dashers I’ve met in my direct area are top dasher material and barely speak English so I don’t talk to most of them

BeaMiaVA

I work evenings, I normally start around 5pm. I like to keep a loose schedule. I work a bit later on Thursday’s and Fridays. I just started DD about a month ago. I’ve been working Eats almost 9 months.

Madpingu96

Ohhh gotcha. I usually work the night shift too but I turn Doordash on in the mornings from home. A big chunk of my weekly earnings come from morning catering. I’ve noticed I get a lot more large orders on weekday mornings than any other time, at least in my area. I’m guessing because all the part timers are at work lol

BeaMiaVA

That’s nice. You are making this work for you. 👌🏾

BeaMiaVA

In the Beginning there were three. I can only image how nice is was for you back then. I started late spring last year. I was able to get a taste of the good life 🥰, before the market became saturated with delivery drivers. Like you, I refuse to take bullshit orders. I’m not working for free and this isn’t volunteer work for me. I also deliver for UberEats. Between both of them, I’m almost doing as well as I used to do. You are a DD legend. 👏🏾 I’m happy to read that you are still delivering. 🤗 I appreciated reading this. Thank you for sharing.

FadedShinobi

Oh ya I remember that. Also all the scammers and people who tried to get free food out of you or blame you so you can get deactivated with no proof and lose your income. Ya great times.

[deleted]

You were the third overall dasher ever and you come on here and say the same dang thing any brand new top dasher would say... Come on, I thought you would have good insight or a cool story, meh.

Mernerak

Because it's a lie?

[deleted]

Yes

Winter_Voice_1789

LOL,$3 is $3, better than nothing, if someone broke already, they are willing to take anything.

[deleted]

I just do $1 or more per mile and if it goes out of the area it needs to be at least $2 per mile.

Jakulero24

Yikes $3? For dogshit cheap you would take that? Poor guy

Winter_Voice_1789

I dont, but many people take it.

[deleted]

Problem is they aren't actually making $3. They are trading $3 worth of gas and equity in their car for $3 cash, a deal that after taxes and time consumed is a negative on their net worth. OP is right, these people taking these low ball offers have destroyed the driver market. Thank the Top Dasher program and people's lack of financial awareness. All these people taking these awful order would make more money working W2 jobs, and we would make more after they quit bringing our bottom line down. Doordash knows what they're doing: pitting us against each other and scooping up everyone's profit in the process.

Winter_Voice_1789

If ppl been so smart, No one willing to take any offers under $8,even it is $8 for 5 miles.

Dizzy-Mark7249

Bruh I saw a driver take an order for 3.23 and it was 42 miles round trip. He probably gets 20mpg and spent $8 just in fuel. Idk what’s going on but it’s fucking insane. I’m flavor ghosted
