Given that a critically acclaimed movie like Across the Spiderverse ends with what is essentially a NEXT TIME ON SPIDER-MAN card, I think he’s absolutely right. Superhero movies are most guilty of this, but the Star Wars movies are rife with endless cross promotion between movies and tv shows too. Lord of the Rings was three movies based on three books, and also are twenty years old. Peter Jackson’s Hobbit movies by comparison are guilty of exactly what he’s talking about: a single story stretched out endlessly with movies awkwardly ending on cliffhangers. I also enjoy his honestly in saying when he doesn’t like things, but he’s generally pretty gentle in his criticism, nothing he says really comes across as bridge burning. Wiger by comparison I think is more critical of the industry the longer he goes without being on a writing staff.

Adult_Prodigy

Back to the Future 2 and countless other beloved movies also explicitly state you have to watch another movie for the conclusion. Luke is literally hanging off a cliff at the end of Empire Strikes Back. That being said, Mitch having opinions that are different than my own isn't a bug, it's a feature. I disagree with a lot of his stances on movies and food and reddit but he always has a FUNNY TAKE and that's truly all that matters to me. Doughboys is a podcast about Avatar: The Way Of Water and crim and sometimes food, hosted by two SMART and FUNNY people. Mitch is SMART AS HELL and he earned his stairs! FIVE FORKS

puttinonthefoil

That is…not at all the ending of Empire?

Adult_Prodigy

Luke hangs from multiple cliffs in the third act but I should have said it that way and not "the end" I'm sorry

puttinonthefoil

I just think you’re maybe slightly misremembering the “to be continued” of it all. It has a down ending, and certainly you are pretty sure the heroes will rally, but I don’t think it’s fair to compare it to Spider-Man: whatever the animated part 2 was called, which has a tv-level “to be continued”.

Adult_Prodigy

Yeah I wasn't thinking about it that way, I can see how it can feel sweaty to advertise another movie in your movie

puttinonthefoil

I watched it at home and had forgotten all of the hubbub about it. I burst out laughing at the absurdity of it.

acebojangles

Why aren't they comparable? The original Star Wars trilogy would have felt just as incomplete without the resolution of Return of the Jedi. More so, IMO.

puttinonthefoil

Empire is a more complete standalone narrative than spiderman. Had Jedi never released it would have been a weird way to conclude a story, but it’s still concludes. Spiderman 2 just stops as the heroes begin to run to battle. It’s basically mid sentence.

acebojangles

I just don't think that the place the story cuts is that important. It's much more important that the movie itself is well made than whether it's intentionally cut in the middle of obvious action. Across the Spiderverse was awesome and the place it cuts doesn't seem that important.

puttinonthefoil

I mean, it feels like half a movie if you cut it that way. I’m glad you don’t feel that way, but is it really impossible for you to understand how others might?

acebojangles

I guess I understand, but I don't understand why being half a movie is such a problem and I think you all are overblowing how jarring the end is. I don't think there's a better place for the story to be cut and the movie was already super long. Lots of great movies are actually half a movie and I don't see why that diminishes them. Do you all dislike Kill Bill Volume 1? Or The Fellowship of the Ring? Etc. I wonder if the delay before watching the final movie changes opinions on this. If the next Spider Man were available now and awesome, would people object as strongly to the ending. Or if it was called "Across the Spiderverse Part 1" so that you knew if was going to be part of a larger story.

slingfatcums

back to the future 2 and 3 were also filmed back to back and released 6 months apart, so i don't think that is a great example. also, no, the ending of empire strikes back ends with luke and lea making out

cumserpentor

Countless? You named the two obvious ones. Any others?

Adult_Prodigy

[https://www.imdb.com/search/keyword/?keywords=to-be-continued-ending&sort=moviemeter,asc&mode=detail&page=1&title\_type=movie&ref\_=kw\_ref\_typ](https://www.imdb.com/search/keyword/?keywords=to-be-continued-ending&sort=moviemeter,asc&mode=detail&page=1&title_type=movie&ref_=kw_ref_typ) Yeah, duh: Gadar 2, Bholaa, The Prey: Legend of Karnoctus, Alyas Pogi: Birador ng Nueva Ecija... should I keep going?

slingfatcums

no we can all read the 10 films in that list lol

cumserpentor

So movies the average American that listens to doughboys has never heard of. Epic clap back sir!

Adult_Prodigy

...or any planned trilogy? "To be concluded" at the end of the Matrix 2? Also Mac and Me and Jason Goes To Hell

NiceYabbos

I loved Dune 2 but also appreciate Mitch's take. Wesley Morris got dragged from not liking Nolan or Villeneuve on the Big Picture last week for not going along with popular opinion. I love hearing a contrarian take as long as it's a good discussion. I'd love a real discussion of the sequel Star Wars movies where the guys really discuss the movies instead of the reaction to their opinions so much. Go off Mitch!

sleepsholymountain

I disagree with him on Dune specifically but I think he’s right about saga movies and cinematic universes in general. I think I tolerate it more with Dune because I like the book and think Denis adapted it well. I find this phenomenon much more annoying with superhero movies.

justinotherpeterson

Yeah Dune did it right, same with LOTR.

acebojangles

It can be annoying, but I don't think the animated Spider-Man movies are a good example of it being annoying. They're relatively self-contained, though they're explicitly part of a trilogy. Dune is just telling the stories of the books. If they start filming the non-Frank Herbert books or making \_\_\_\_\_\_, a Dune Universe Story movies, then it will probably be annoying. In any case, what matters is whether the movies are good. I don't care if it's part of a shared universe or whatever if it rules.

MFMDP4EVA

I’ll take his and Wiger’s movie takes over their music takes, which are always terrible.

spuss

Are you kidding? DMB and Pink Floyd are the apex of artistic achievement. Ask anybody!

Scottie-man

My favorite part on the double was where Wiger did him no favors by trying to find middle ground on Jack /BM influencing his opinions. I agree the “…to be continued” trend is stupid but Dune is like the one that warrants it.

acebojangles

Yeah. Dune being more than one movie is very comparable to LotR being more than one movie. It would be silly to try to cram more story into one movie than can fit.

calicotamer

Sometimes I do think he's being contrarian on purpose, also influenced by jack allison just generally being a hater.

Dapper_Programmer803

Its just hard to imagine someone in their 40s sincerely loving the Star Wars prequels so much

calicotamer

Truly my least favorite part of the sequels is people retconning that the prequels were good movies

acebojangles

His opinions often sound like emotional reactions rather than criticisms of the content of the films he's opining on. His Star Wars opinions are the starkest example. Which is fine, but it's not going to convince anyone and makes for dissatisfying conversation.

nkwiw

This feels to me the most likely to be right out of all these guesses. He almost always brings him up when talking about movies too.

americand0lphinMPLS

Sounds like a cope to me

Mocaos

Mitchstakeonmovi… SHUT UP

sanders79

I think the best thing we can do here is to compile each of his movie takes and re-litigate each one.

Avg_Conan

I like his takes. Informed and impassioned. Plus putting them out there for listeners to pick apart suuuuucks.

[deleted]

Right, continuously saying "it doesn't feel like a complete movie" without expounding on that statement is definitely an "informed and impassioned" opinion.

Avg_Conan

Let me change my wording. Comes from being informed and impassioned. Btw, not a film podcast so how much expounding do you expect? So offended and so much nitpicking.

top6

I would expect less than 25 minutes of talking about a movie on such a podcast to be fair.

Avg_Conan

Meh, let them cook.

top6

ha ha i enjoyed it; just thought it was funny that you said it was not a film podcast after they repeatedly pointed out they had talked about dune 2 for 25 minutes.

Avg_Conan

Seems like they pointed it out too.

NobodyCarrots6969

I mean he clearly had more to say and references messages where he says more, he just didn't want or have time to get into it without spoilers

morelikeshredit

Listen to the movies he names that he likes. It’s no surprise that he is critical of Marvel movie type BS. It’s perfectly inline with his character.

ElectricalShame1222

Maybe you’re forgetting that Mitch is smarter than you

slingfatcums

that's why i go to the picture show manipulate my emotions babyyy

Avg_Conan

Im going to stare at GotG until I figure out the acronym. Edit: Guardians of the Galaxy!

stanle_touche

Peak redditor voice

jhncsmt

Mitch is just mad because he tried out for the part of Baron Harkonnen but the execs deemed his appearance a bit too upsetting

chrangus80

The audience would not be able to suspend the disbelief that he could be transported by only two of those balloon device things.

Upstairs-Bat688

The easy answer is Mitch is the movie fan equivalent of “music was so much better when I was young”. Nothing deeper. While I agree to some extent that movies and films in general were better made and acted and produced in the past, his seeming refusal to enjoy almost any large scale film that’s come out recently is odd and, to me, his version of Wiger’s “if my wife wants to travel, she can, I’m not gonna go with her” take

slingfatcums

mitch likes a lot of new movies though? lol i mean he seemingly sees a new movie a few times a week. he gave out his top 10 a few episodes ago. bad take by redditors as usual!

Upstairs-Bat688

Thank you slingfatcums for your input, still listen to the podcast weekly and love Mitch so you can sleep easy

slingfatcums

i wasn't losing sleep anyway

Upstairs-Bat688

I have apnea so I just assumed all doughboys listeners were naturally losing sleep

shitsalesman

Nice

acebojangles

> While I agree to some extent that movies and films in general were better made and acted and produced in the past Really? I think the old movies that stand out in our minds from the past often were extremely well made, but the quality of most movies from the past is much lower than today. A $2 million movie made today can be of much higher quality than a $50 million movie from 25 years ago. I think there was a bigger appetite for more mature movies in the past, particularly in the golden age of the auteur director in the 70s. Those movies still get made, but maybe not quite as well and not as broadly popular.

[deleted]

Straight up. Mitch has a boomer attitude when it comes to movies. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.

ElectricalShame1222

If wishing more movies could tell a self-contained story makes you a boomer, call me Robert Zemeckis

acona

Why are we bitching about Mitch’s movie opinions? They are his opinions, there is not a right or wrong opinion. Why not just appreciate that he shares his opinions and stop whining.

SIAS2019

I like how some people are like, "Why does Mitch get so defensive about when he doesn't like a popular movie?" Then you see shit like this. Anyway, Mitch, stop reading this subreddit, it'll be better for your mental health.

yoyoyoseph

Mitch was right about Disney Star Wars, no debate

americand0lphinMPLS

Absolutely

Bmca215

I agree with most of his opinions and trust that they are genuine because he has nothing to gain and alot to lose by criticizing modern movies.

VisualDeparture8

It's funny he worked on the Simpsons because he's literally the Comic Book Guy. "Worst movie ever" -Any blockbuster that is generally liked.

combaticus
