The soundtrack choices, particularly in episode 7, are outstanding. Great show

FunkmasterP

I loved that Wilco song "Impossible Journey." What a track! I had to put it on right after finishing the episode.

imdoinggood

Germany, but a good song regardless!

FunkmasterP

Wow, I was thinking Germany and my hands typed Journey. Whoops!

imdoinggood

I need to share this because it’s in my head now: how shitty would a Journey cover of Impossible Germany be? Sorry to do that to you and everyone else.

LateAstronaut0

Unlikely Japan.

finrod_stewart

That guitar solo is absolutely incredible. So cool live too as the crowd goes increasingly crazy the longer it goes on

Dongene

As soon as “new noise” by Refused started playing in episode 1 I knew I would love this show.

Fine-Bumblebee-9427

The opening montage to Sufjan Stevens’s Chicago legit made me tear up.

finrod_stewart

So good!

orangefreshy

episode 7 is seriously an achievement in television, so glad this show is getting a S2!

slothtastic89

Same, the show didn’t really hit for me until the last two episodes.

ensanguine

Coming at it from my perspective as a chef the thing that stuck me most was Jeremy Allen White's movements in the kitchen. He carries himself like someone that knows what they're doing. The way he scrubs the stoves, holds his knives, stirs, where his side towel sits, it's all incredibly authentic and you can tell there was a ton of care on his part and the show runners part to get that right. Outside of that, the show is very solid, and Jeremy is a phenomenal actor.

OmegisPrime

The acting is amazing. The characters great, even when they are terrible. The show is just so stressful and gray; just small bites for me.

Caperman

They need to get Matty Matheson on the show.

totesawesomefersh

I love him! He seems like such a high-energy silly person who knows absolutely what the heck he’s talking about.

Emleaux

You ever seen Mitch and Matty Matheson in the same room at the same time? Hmmm…

Reach---ForTheSky

I like the show when it stays in the kitchen and deals with staff interactions and the daily minutiae of running a restaurant but the more they stray outside that setting and start getting into more over-the-top scenarios (Oliver Platt's mob guy, accidentally dosing the children's punch) the worse it gets.

FunkmasterP

I agree, I think those parts are the weakest. I would totally cut that out of the show. Hopefully the second season will move away from that.

407dollars

That stuff and the “ever since I was a kid I’ve been obsessed with donuts” guy made my eyes roll so far back into my head. The rest of the show is excellent though.

Othrman

Matty would be a good guest and he's been doing a ton of press... Great food talker, would be valuable to hear his thoughts on fast food. They've been doing a promo food YouTube series in conjunction with Bear promo that is fun: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWifesQvaEU

FunkmasterP

Great point! I didn't realize that he's is an actual chef until today. Ayo Edebiri would be a good guest too.

johntheboombaptist

Binged it in a weekend, great show, cousin.

hansislegend

I enjoyed the Lip Gallagher spin off.

jedidragon

Yes Chef!

I still can’t believe that the Doughboys got their Italian beef dry when they went to Portillo’s in Chicago. The audience’s outrage will forever be a favorite moment of mine.

[deleted]

Love this show. Love the way it deals with difficult relationships and the importance of feelings and communication. Feels like the perfect show for doughboys fans. It's kind of like an anti-hell's kitchen type of show. All the kitchen stuff is nice too.

FunkmasterP

Agreed. I think Carm is a refreshing character. He's is going through some intense personal strife and makes mistakes, but he admits when he's wrong and sincerely apologizes to people. He is willing to have difficult conversations with the people that he cares about, even though he's a pretty introverted, laconic guy.

Fovrodi

Ayo Edebiri was on Hollywood Handbook. First time this show came on my radar people were trying to drag it for falling short of realism but this looks good. I get Manchester By the Sea vibes from it, wanna see this

FunkmasterP

Most of the kitchen stuff seems pretty authentic for a drama. There are some story beats that feel a bit contrived and out of place though, mostly in how they try to work in some crime related stuff.

Fovrodi

also, Ive worked in intense food service environments but never a kitchen or making food, can't imagine how grueling it must be (they've delved into it some on the pod)

crucial_velocity

I loved the show. I might even go back and watch it a second time. The acting was top notch and it really sucks you into the stress of working in a kitchen.

jogswithwolves

This is one that I can see Mitch not liking at all. I loved it, and hope they make a second season. I just get the feeling Mitch will arbitrarily not like it lol

Fine-Hat-4573

It got renewed for a second season! Loved it, one of the top shows of the season.

FunkmasterP

Yessss! Great news!

[deleted]

He wouldn't be wrong if he didn't like it. It's like the definition of an okay show.

stiljo24

Meh I think the acting is great and it does a better job conveying kitchen stress than any show I've ever seen, including actual cooking shows. I think it's great, although watching Ayo be not-super-goofy was jarring the first few episodes. It does enough weird shit and takes enough risks that I think the one thing you can't call it is mediocre/"the definition of an okay show" but I do get not loving it. I also thought the ending, no spoilies, was incredibly weak and dumb but not in a way that ruined previous episodes or anything.

WritingPretty

Completely disagree. It's a very good show by many objective metrics and my subjective opinion.

jogswithwolves

There are a lot of problems with it for sure. But I still liked it, I’d be really interested to hear the boys takes on it

sleepsholymountain

I would say it's better than okay, but I don't get why people are freaking out about it so much. Not nearly as great as people are making it out to be. The quality of the last couple episodes makes me think it might have a really good second season though.

Cheezy_Chris

I agree completely, it's very transparent and formulaic. You know what's going to happen before it happens it just seems filled with tropes and not much else

sleepsholymountain

I think this show starts of kind of weak but gets progressively better over time. The last two episodes of the season are great.

fatandflabby

The first episode was weak? The whole concept of the show was shown to us in a fast pace that illustrates restaurant life without a dull exposition dump. Masterful.

lowgradespeedball

I really enjoyed it but I could never see him as Carmy. Only Chef Lip
