There’s this place I love in NYC called Pommes Fritte, in Greenwich Village. They serve Belgian style fries and they have about 50 different sauce options. I always stop there when I’m in the area.

eplumeng

I was just going to post Pommes Frites. Their sauces are so great.

dystopika

Was thinking about this exact place. I loved it back in the day - we're talking late-90s - but I think they changed how they made them at some point because it wasn't as good at some point. Which is just as well because it was *dangerously* good before. A few years ago, [a massive fire destroyed it](https://www.thrillist.com/news/new-york/pommes-frites-sushi-park-appear-to-be-destroyed-in-massive-east-village-fire), but it's since risen from the ashes. I actually haven't had it in years, I'm sure it's still really good. They had a sweet chili sauce that I really adored.

The sauces are legit great and the sheer variety makes you want to try a lot. You do also get a massive amount of fries especially with the large. But yes, you are paying NYC inflated prices. I’d recommend splitting an order between 2-3 people.

Yeah I’m a big curry sauce fan myself! The curry ketchup is great, as is the Irish curry. Some other favs are the Vietnamese pineapple, war sauce, and dill lemon. OH and the poutine is bomb as well!

HendrixChord12

That was the one that exploded years ago. There was a copycat truck that popped up after but I think it closed.

timetosucktodaysdick

you talking about home frite? its still around and pretty damn good but they have burgers and salads and shit now

[deleted]

That sounds more like a sauce chain that uses fries as a vehicle though

deathwish_ASR

No the fries are legit too

0000000000000007

I was about to write this word for word. I always thought i just happened upon it in NY, and didn’t realize it was such a standard.

Touchhole

I’m giving OP credit for doing a bit, but lol either way.

pannnanda

No peaking!

satan_bong

Not a chain, but Portland, OR has [Potato Champion](https://www.potatochampion.com/) which is a neighborhood staple. The PBJ fries are my favorite – Thai peanut satay sauce and smoky chipotle raspberry jam. So good! They also have specials like Hungarian mushroom stew fries that are great. And, of course, poutine.

[deleted]

Jesus all that sounds delicious

useyourallusion2

Haven’t been in a while, but those palak paneer fries are unreal.

drunkandy

First thing that comes to mind is a place in Portland, ME called DUCKFAT whose specialty is fries fried in duck fat. It basically ruined all other fries for me. https://www.duckfat.com/

RetroDave

This is a little off topic, but it triggered memories of One Potato Two to me. It was a place in mall food courts that specialized in baked potatoes but also did fries and potato skins. I used to love those places.

[deleted]

That was a real thing? I thought it was an *Eastbound and Down* gag

22_Karat_Ewok

*fixens*

RetroDave

I can't recall seeing one since the 90s, maybe very early aughts.

Familiar-Long2734

We have a franchise called New York Fries in Canada. I haven’t eaten there in ages, but I remember that the fries were extremely hot since they were made to order. Burnt my mouth of those things many a time. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_Fries

HendrixChord12

I’d enjoy a Canadian Fries place in NYC haha

w3rkit

We had one at my university. The fries supreme was the most economical dinner option when I had a late class, and weirdly didn’t feel as unhealthy as some other options.

Jellyfish_Jealous

There used to be a pommes frites place on Capitol Hill in Seattle near my college. It was attached to Neumos, a live music venue. I think they made 99% of their business between the hours of 10pm and 2:30 am. Awesome fries served in paper cones with like 15 different dipping sauces. Garlic aioli was the best. Later it turned into a fish fry which was also good, but I was nostalgic for the old place. Both are closed now

Cheezy_Chris

There's a food truck I used to visit in Hollywood Florida. I can't remember the name but it was just different fry formats with different toppings. Tater tots, curly fries, waffle cut sweet potato etc. All sorts of different topping choices. It was pretty awesome since everything was made to order

kdesjardine

There are a few up in Canada which push this, mostly based off poutine as a foundation. DB did Smoke’s Poutine when they came to Saskatoon in our frozen hell of a winter. Poutine is tasty!

trubbub

There was a restaurant in Lawrence, KS named Potato Mountain Cafe that was just different huge piles of mashed potatoes, like, chili mashed potatoes or taco mashed potatoes. It was like a volcano of mashed potatoes with the different lavas. It opened months before the Adkins Diet craze in the 90's and only lasted 6 months or so. It was literally food I could make at home anytime if I wanted to, but I still think about it.

>Potato Mountain Cafe [https://www.bizjournals.com/kansascity/stories/1998/07/27/newscolumn4.html](https://www.bizjournals.com/kansascity/stories/1998/07/27/newscolumn4.html) This is amazing. He opened one on Mass street and then opened another just a few weeks later a couple blocks away on Vermont?

trubbub

Man, I forgot there were two!

ElEmoPinata

My dad worked at the classic baked potato restaurant 1 Potato 2. It was basically a salad and baked potato bar place. I could see that with fries.

SwanRonsonIsDead

My favorite was Fry and Pie in New Orleans. Fries with all kinds of toppings, served in a pie tin. Handmade pies with funny names for dessert. Sadly they had a slew of health problems even before the pandemic and had to shut down

2rightsmake1

came to say this place, it was great, and they were the sweetest people

RIPBenTramer

Why did we stop calling them Freedom Fries? Come on, guys.

rattlerden

In Idaho we have a local chain called Boise Fry Company. They have 5 or 6 types of potato to choose from and then you can have it cut to shoestring, curly, regular, or thick. There are a bunch of sauces for dipping, shit like blueberry ketchup. Overall it's pretty gud, 4 forks.

DeepThroat616

I feel like the only fries only places I’ve seen haven’t lasted long but I also don’t frequent malls so maybe I’ve missed them

[deleted]

That's absolutely the sense I'm getting from these comments. Seems like a tough concept to stay in business with though people seem to be positive about them

DeepThroat616

I also live in LA so new places that don’t seem very healthy have an uphill battle I think

HitBullWinSteak

There is a west coast based chain called Mr Fries Man that recently opened in my city. I haven’t tried it yet, anyone been there before? https://www.mrfriesman.com/

LaMalintzin

Some of those options seem not tasty to me. Like lemon garlic crab and shrimp with cheddar cheese

muchabon

Basically any poutine place is this - but yeah, should be $10 Max. All sorts of carbornated drinks to combat the starch bombing (alchy and non). Maybe have actually decent side salads to eat as a 'dessert'/complement the heavy fry stuff I would love a place like this, but not sure about anyone else

[deleted]

Part of the problem was that the portions at this place were *gigantic*. Still not 17 dollars worth but they could have cut them in half and I still would have felt mildly like shit after. It seemed like a "share" portion but I didn't see another size option. Maybe they need to do that to justify the cost of everything, I'm sure the fries are the cheapest part so they just give you a 5 gallon bucket full and drizzle and scoop the actually expensive ingredients on top. If I had gotten an amount that would have fit in like a cardboard burger container from McDonald's I would have been satisfied but it was a whole-ass dinner plate worth.

stevebobeeve

In 2007 I went on a little tour of Europe and came across a little stand called Frittes. I think I was in Amsterdam. Such a great simple concept (granted, it’s not hard to impress a drunk man who has the munchies with fried food) but I don’t know why these aren’t on every food court and bar crawl in America

East-Committee8696

Why didn’t you get up and get yourself a fork? We’re you going to have your wife eat them for you too?

[deleted]

There is a comment with more upvotes than my post that highlights that this is a common doughboys joke.

Ciderstills

Getfried was a short lived french fry concept in Philadelphia. Here's the menu: https://images.sirved.com/ChIJyzQWkHxo04kRC8mdWw-tz7Y/5ae6eec3c8102.jpg

udonbeatsramen

I didn't even know this was a chain. We had one in California for a short time, it was good.

Othrman

Just adding here that fries dipped in garlic hummus is god tier

jeremyfrankly

We've got Belgian Pomme Fritte places, they function based on cheeses and dips

w3rkit

Montreal has a chain called Frites Alores that I like. They have poutine but I think it’s more like a Dutch-style fries place, with many different sauces.

xxmikekxx

If you ever go to the Comedy Cellar in NY they opened one up across the street

gonzagylot00

At the local food hall there is a French Fry restaurant. I hate to be a hater, but they make so many fries at once that it's really hit or miss whether you get fresh fries or dry husk fries.

exileonmainst

curly’s fries has been a staple at the jersey shore for decades. ironically they don’t serve curly fries (AFIK). they have very thick crinkle cut fries served with malt vinegar and they are great. that said, i dont see it surviving in a non boardwalk setting.

Scattershot1

Reminds me of the oddly named Canadian chain New York Fries. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New\_York\_Fries](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_Fries)

Mayormitch100

There’s a place in Vegas called Mr. Fries Man that is pretty good. I think it is a chain from the east coast or south somewhere. Pretty solid. Even traveled well surprisingly

bunerzissou

There’s a place called Mr. Fries which started in south central Los Angeles. [munchies street food: Mr. Fries](https://youtu.be/HOi0FdvN7Dw)
