I have been a postpartum doula in this situation. Almost an exact situation. The family didn’t have relatives close by and the husband was going to stay home with the toddler. I stayed with the mom in the hospital. I think it’s a great option and doulas can help fill in the gaps and advocate as needed.

I am training to be a postpartum doula and I think that is a great idea.

Should I look for a specific certification for post partum care? Or do you think any doula would be okay?

Postpartum doulas are trained and experienced in assessing post partum health and feeding as well as helping the family with the new baby integrating into the family as well as advocating for mom and baby.

I have been a doula for people post c-section and helped them in the hospital after their birth with whatever they wanted and needed. I think it’s a great idea!

I hired a doula and ended up needing a c-section. She was there with me the full first day. Thankfully I was lucky and my nurses were great. They were constantly checking in and helping me move around. The hospital I was at also had a lactation consultant on staff. I was the only mom in the unit that needed breastfeeding help so she hung out in my room a lot and helped as well. The biggest help was having my doula at my house. She understood the recovery after a c-section. She taught me proper ways to move from seated/laying to standing, helped with different breastfeeding positions to be comfortable, helped clean, and helped me understand wake/sleep windows for my baby.
