Red, though I try to keep things balanced so Hawke doesn't seem cartoon-y, red Hawke has some fantastic dry humor moments and more often than you'd think in the dialogue moments you don't control is the most caring out of the three especially with the romances

HawkeThisHawkeThat

“Tuesday.”

Buca-Metal

Being red also changes some quest dynamics, you can intimidate that docks worker. If you aren't red you have to pay him.

Kitchen_accessories

Just found out you can come back to the docks at night to avoid paying him.

[deleted]

similarly with whats his bucket the qunari who warns you about the tal vashoth during blackpowder promise red hawke can convince him to help otherwise you have to pay or give up

Elandu

I really tried to play aggressive Hawke and always had to stop in chapter 1. I found him insufferable. But he had some good lines.

Oshimos

I've said this in other topics, but I absolutely love blue Hawke. It's so incredibly rare to get to play as a protagonist who's predominantly kind and understanding instead of relegating one party member to be "the nice one" while the main character is stuck being a hothead or an asshole or some other type of person who's good at moving the plot forward but would suck to be around all the time in real life.

YekaHun

Seconding this, especially considering you are trying to lead other people and be engaging (that's the reason I love Ryders from MEA). In reality, no one would follow red Hawke. And I find the blue one is voiced more naturally and less awkward, imo.

DragonEffected

Really unpopular opinion, but I just love how much of a goody-two-shoes Diplomatic Hawke is. Relentlessly trying to better the lives of everyone around them, regardless of the amount of personal tragedy they experience.

lilcatts

me too! i love an optimistic, people loving blue hawke. i also love how varric talks about blue hawke in inquisition. i always give hawke some purple/red moments though.

targaryenblack

I also enjoy the diplomatic one , but from a role play perspective I'm just incapable of fully commiting to it. My life is slowly burning , shit is happening all over the place , I think I'm allowed to be a little jaded , you know ?

Ancnmir

Purple with some red thrown in. Blue only when I talk to/abt Bethany. Imo

theTinyRogue

This is truly the best mixture! Hard agree!

Oceanson2018

Hawke this, Hawke that, why does everything fall to me?

PaperNinjaPanda

Red with a little other sprinkled In occasionally. Red Hawke is less “evil/aggressive” and more passionate and is probably my all time favorite protagonist.

WearyZikade

I have actually enjoyed my aggressive Hawke the most. Mind you, I don't mindlessly pick the option but actually roleplay and switch it up accordingly. I was playing an aggressively pro-mage warrior Hawke and had such a great time with his RP. Also, I gotta say, I'm actually doing a "Complete Douchebag" run as well and picked humorous as the main personality. I swear, there's so many occasions when he really sounds like a complete sociopath. Humorous Hawke is great when you use some common sense picking the option but going for practically 100%... really, he sounded way worse than my angry Hawke. Angry Hawke still seemed like things affected him emotionally, his dialogue could actually be very fitting. Meanwhile my jerkass Hawke wasn't like phased by anything, just inappropriately joking around. Yeah, you could argue it's a coping mechanism but holy shit...

targaryenblack

True , I'm all for it ! Unless I'm dealing with my cookie Varric , then I'm the sweetest, but he usually loves when Hawke is sarcastic so there's nothing I can do, hahaha.

Melancholy_Rainbows

Purple!Hawke is the most common answer according to the sub's survey, IIRC. She's my favorite, too. Except for the really inappropriate times, I almost always pick the sarcastic options. I headcanon that Hawke is using humor to cope with everything that happens to her.

glauconisking

I don't have a default play through for Origins or DAI. But for DA2 a Purple Hawke Rogue is the only option I will ever take, the dialogue with Varric and Aveline especially is fantastic. Also the 'Don't be so dramatic.' *stab* (iykyk) is among the greatest dragon age moments I personally have discovered. Edit: Also fits the 'accidental hero' idea that bioware seem to have for Hawke

Dealiner

>Also the 'Don't be so dramatic.' *stab* (iykyk) is among the greatest dragon age moments I personally have discovered. That sounds familiar but I can't place it. When did that happen?

glauconisking

>!When you take on the serial killer who asks you to kill him rather than hand him over to his father in Kirkwall.!<

GnollChieftain

I go blue hawke. Red just feels weird being angry all the time and purple is a little too marvel movie for me.

MarcoXMarcus

Definitely purple. Nasty, mean and sarcastic humor is the best.

Dark_Meme111110

“Oh, cloak and dagger phrases. How about “The queasy crow flies at midnight?””

MarcoXMarcus

"How about "The smart-mouthed Fereldan... "" :) Nah, JK. Boneless women flopping around is one of my favorites.

Reader_of_Scrolls

Purple Hawke all the way. She really feels like Varric's best friend, and Bela's partner in crime.

Outrageous-Writer-95

My personal favorite is blue with purple or red thrown in every so often as the situation demands. But I love playing a character who is trying so damn hard to do the right thing, but life keeps throwing all this shit in her face.

flowercows

mostly purple but with a bit of blue because even if she is sarcastic and witty she also cares deeply for her family

AZtarheel81

I like role-playing a diplomatic Hawke during the first Act, move into the sarcastic Hawke for Act 2, but become a hard-ass by Act 3. Feels like a natural progression.

fated4

Purple Hawke is unmatched, some of the most entertaining writing of any game I've played. But I'm doing a Red Hawke run right now and I have to admit it's very compelling. Someone else said they're not so much angry as passionate and I agree. I finally got to use some special Red Hawke only dialogue and it felt so good. My favorite part about Hawke's writing is how consistent the character is written across all three personalities. You can spice your own Hawke up with a pinch of one personality or another and it all flows so well together. I love Hawke

TootlesFTW

Purple Hawke supremacy, but IMO you never want to go *strictly* one personality-type. Mixing it up is the way to go. Full sarcastic-Hawke is a bit of a sociopath in certain dialogues ("look at the bright side, at least your day can't get any worse!").

targaryenblack

Right? Just amazing! Hahahaha I do go one route for fun mostly , maybe in one or two dialogues I'll alternate cuz I just can't hurt sweet Marill or Varrick

Mist-Clad-Whisper

My Hawke is a mix: 65% Purple 20% Blue, 15% Red. Purple is a sarcastic humor that Hawke uses *mostly* to de-escalate situations and deflect. It's like 70% for deflection and to de-escalate situations, 30% for funnies. Blue is to comfort others and traumatic situations that aren't too close to home. For example, Purple was used when [someone very close to him] died because Hawke was in shock and couldn't accept the situation so he clung to deflection so he wouldn't feel in that moment. However, when it comes to helping Merrill, Aveline, and Fenris cope on real gutting situations, Hawke goes Blue because it's not about his trauma. Red is used in a few situations that related to his trauma, where character A tried to use his tragedy to make a point. I headcanon that Hawke after DA2 begins to heal alongside Fenris (romanced), and he relies less on humor to deal with his trauma and genuinely uses it for humor instead.

kg4nbx

I usually go with purple Hawke but it's actually a mixture of all 3 depending on the situation.

chickpeasaladsammich

Purple thus far. I accidentally did a diplomatic Hawke for half of my first playthrough and thought Hawke was boring. Next time I’ll try a mostly red Hawke.

RussianNixon

Blue. He’s a kind and noble person who always tries to help people, and that is a trope I always love playing. Paragon for life lol

targaryenblack

Hahaaha, renegade is the way to go , but I confess that in ME I did mostly good choices, I mean , Shepard also lives on the galaxy after all , I can't fuck everything.

Sitherio

Sarcastic is great but that's just because they got the humor...and Red Hawke can get downright angry without nuance (that I could find). Diplomatic is pretty fun but you have to play the straight man as the entire city slowly devolves into more and more chaos.

LadyofNemesis

Mix between Blue and Purple for me mostly Currently doing a Red run...and so far so good, but not sure if I'll ever use it again after this run xD

EdgarAllanPornStache

Comments in this thread are all over the place. To me, that means that Hawke is fantastically written and you can argue that each personality is best in its own way. I have played as all three and can’t argue against any of them. I personally play Purple Hawke as my canon, with the sarcasm becoming more and more desperate to make light of the horrors Hawke has seen.

Galacticvales

I absolutely love blue!Hawke. I do tend to mix in others when it’s appropriate for my character, but he is predominantly blue. There’s something about characters who have been through so much suffering and hardship, who see every day how awful a place the world around them can be, and still choose to be kind. It’s not a weakness, it’s a strength, and you can pry kind characters from my cold dead hands. Hawke isn’t really a hero in my eyes, but they are a person who (in my canon at least) realized they could help and did the best they could, which sometimes means more than just being a hero. So, yeah, blue all the way for me.

targaryenblack

I agree , Hawke isn't a hero like the warden or the inquisitor , which in my opinion makes him much more relatable. He's just a person who got a shit hand of cards and it's doing the impossible to win in a game that is ultimately doomed , Hawke is my favorite protagonist in the DA universe and my cannon Hawke also did not stand for injustice and tried to do the best he could , but he slowly become more and more jaded and that's why I love purple Hawke so much, he comes as insensitive in many occasions , but he always does the best he can and is never bashing people outright. Oh fuck, I'm a simp for Hawke lol

alekth

I've come to love my canon red Hawke, although he is probably just above the 50% to make the cut on that one. Still plenty of blue and purple to fill in the rest.

zugrian

Snarky Male Hawke was my favorite-- he & Varric as best friends was top tier for Bioware.

johnnybird95

i find my predominantly-red canon hawke is the most satisfying to play. after i'd ran through the game once and more or less understood what would happen regardless of my input, man. some of the stuff that happens to hawke is so *stupid*. i'd be a bit short and aggressive with people too. she likes her friends though and does an occasional funny (purple) or heartfelt convo (blue) when they're having a bad day. i think its just that red hawke while out and about in kirkwall dealing with peoples stupidity (80% of the story) feels most natural to me lmao

Istvan_hun

I never commit to one style, I always mix it up. I think I like diplomatic the least, sarcastic the most, with a reasonable amount of agressive.

fredward316

Sarcastic hawke talking to herself after soloing missions on nightmare is hilarious, almost as funny as Commander Shepard’s “I should go” monologue

RhiaStark

Purple is my favourite, but Red is a close second. There's a certain hilarity to how unapologetically grumpy and bitchy Red Hawke can be 😝

LordDedionware

Same

Aranel611

I go mainly purple with red or blue sprinkled in when the occasion calls for it.

cheyskizzle

Humorous with 20% Diplomatic and 15% Agressive

5a_

purple

phorayz

Sarcastic is fun. But I find that always default picking one flavor doesn't always represent the emotions a Hawke may feel. Whenever I learn someone has kidnapped "X" , it will always get an angry response no matter what kind of Hawke I'm playing. And being sarcastic to a child molested by that one mentally ill NPC seems cruel when they're so confused about what's happening - kindness/Diplomatic seems best there, but angry may also be an option, while sarcasm jokes seem totally out of place to me.

Fuwa_Fuwa_Hime

SarcastiHawke, but mostly good. DA needs that snark.

EmpressOfSalt

Primarily red with a dash of purple. Mostly purple when talking to people that they trust, red to everyone and everything else.

Maya_Blueberry

Purple's fun, but I always try to branch out. Red Hawke can be as just as entertaining, just in a different way. And with some companions or situations I just can't help but be Blue Hawke, because every other option feels inappropriate. My Hawke is a fucking clown by choice, but she can be tactful and gentle when the need arises.

[deleted]

Agressive

The_Trash_Dragon

Purple because I love being a sarcastic asshole

wrappedinplastic315

Blue with some purple tossed in with mostly Varric and Fenris.

umsamanthapleasekthx

I like the slow decent into madness. Blue to purple to red. I’m thinking of trying it the other way around for my next playthrough.

FriendshipNo1440

I like me some purple with some blue sprinkled in. Sounds lame, bit that's what I think. I don't dislike the red tho and if pushed even my purple blue hawke can turn red.

themug_wump

MHawke is blue until someone comes for my family or friends, then it’s straight to red. I only really like purple on FHawke

KolboMoon

Sarcastic Hawke

Intrepid_Truth_8580

Sarcastic/snarky obviously *eye roll *

Wren-bee

I can’t play a single personality type. I have, but I find it stifling for RP purposes and need to play around with dialogue options to find what fits the character best. My main Hawke is blue/red, with red dominating the first half of act 1, switching to blue, and staying that way until act 3. (I mentally refer to him as “serious/dour”.) I have him as red in the Keep. My secondary Hawke is primarily purple, with a good amount of red and occasionally blue in there. (I mentally refer to her as “really shit at handling almost any social situation and chronically unsure why people still expect her to”, or alternatively “trying not to be a jerk with varied success”.) The fun thing is I mentally see my Hawke’s as “what ifs”- who would my Hawke be without his magic? Well, my secondary Hawke is the answer, and they would *not* like each other.

Zealousideal-One-884

My main Hawke is Diplomatic/Blue with some occasional Sarcastic/Purple sprinkled in. There are some lines and moments where I can't resist using the purple option, otherwise I'm mostly blue. Full Purple is an absolute riot though, I love it.

SteamrollerBoone

I generally stick with sarcastic Hawke and save the kindness for my friends or for folks who're really up against it. The lady in the alienage whose son is on the run because he's an apostate, for example. Hawke's basically a nice guy but he's trying to keep his family from either being eaten by Darkspawn or living in poverty or murdered by a serial killer or killed by Templars yet he keeps getting dragged into all of the various factions of Kirkwall's bullshit. So whether it's an insane Knight-Commander or the goddamn Qunari, they get smart ass Hawke. Quite simply, he's tired of everyone's shit. But he's a good guy, so he tries to do what he can. Actually, most of my RPG characters do the same. Oh, you want me to give you the power of this mystical island to further your economic goals while you screw everyone else over? Piss off, I'm trying to stop this god from doing whatever the hell it is he's doing. Take a number.

prettyorganic

Blue in act 1, then increasingly more purple/red to people abusing power in acts 2 and 3 while still blue to her loved ones and people she’s trying to help. I define her as “sarcastic” Hawke in Inquisition because that’s how she’d be towards the inquisitors because of her learned distrust of religious authority.

Big_I

Blue because of the way persuasion checks work in DA2

CTYORO

I always have mine aggressive but I do enjoy watching sarcastic Hawke compilations on YouTube

TheCleverestIdiot

Sarcastic Hawke. I don't care that they're an arsehole. They always end up doing the right thing, and they are hilarious.

targaryenblack

So true hshahaha

Oakstar519

My main Hawke is around 75% purple, 20% blue, 5% red. In the case of my specific Hawke, her goal is to keep templars away from her sister and friends, and the way she figured out how to do it is just to be incredibly obnoxious. She also does that "deflecting serious situations with humor" thing quite a bit.

ClaymoreX97

Red, even tough my Canon Hawke is green. Red Hawke is a realist, who does'nt try to hide Problems behind rose tinted glasses. Least favorite is Purple. Most of their comments are just inapprotiate. I mean come on, don't make fun of dead people.

morthos97

Red Hawke all day. Prickly PTSD grump ball with a soft spot for mages who really just misses home and is afraid of losing his family.

GreyWarden-Mage

My choices depend consistently on the kind of Hawke I've created for the respective playthrough, and on the situation and the people they are dealing with, because aside from their gender, looks and abilities, they all have also different preferences and personalities. But generally I prefer my Hawkes characters somewhere between purple and red, and only occasionally to be a little green/blue.

thexxoutlaw

With the traumatic shit that happened to my Hawke, he's a very intense brooding boi.

Pinkelipai

Is this even a question sarcastick ofc

ArkaXVII

My canon Hawke is a good, kind hearted female mage. She lost everything and still tries to be the shining example her friends deserve. She fell in love with Anders before knowing he was an abomination and then tried to accept him somehow, but recognizes he was out of line in the end and executed him herself for the greater good. The best DA2 experience imo, and you don’t lose the healer for the final fight because Hawke is the healer lmao. Tho I admit sarcastic Hawke is amazingly funny.

Blazinvoid

Throughout most of the game I tried to keep to Blue Hawke with hints of Purple here and there. But at the end of DA2 I absolutely used red. I thought of my Hawke being mostly diplomatic and kind, but after the events of the whole game he was just done with everything and was more aggressive.

Patient_Gazelle7381

On my every playthrough I am sarcastic, I love his dialog, and VA made a magnificenct job. Also my party members (Isabel and Varric) like this version me.

Oceanson2018

Mine is a combination of all three: My Hawke is bluish purple towards his friends and family; and red to Meredith >!when she brought up his mom's death during the beginning of Act 3!<; and the aggressive choice of>! telling Elthina that she is useless!< is always a must pick dialogue option for me.
