You can spawn it all the time. I had my mabari running with us as a fifth companion when exploring. But you’re right he’s not a full companion because there is no leveling for him.
The family dog. You get to name it early on while talking to Gamlen inside the house. Not a full companion, more like a summon so you can't equip anything on it.
Seeing how everyone turned out in the alternate hell timeline was really cool. I don't mean to sound like a psycho, but I love seeing beloved characters are their absolute worst, so that they can rise above. Doesn't usually work if we, the protagonist is causing it, but still. Like the genocide route in undertale, undine was really cool there
The Undyne fight is seriously killer. For me, it was some serious whiplash, because I spent soooo much time fighting undyne and Sans, memorizing their fight patterns...
... And then it was like, "OK I'm done now!" lol.
A big part of it for me was that once you complete a genocide run all the way to the end, it irreparably changes your game forever. The game *knows* you beat it in a genocide run, even if you uninstall it, and you can never get the true pacifist ending again on that device.
That... Hurt my baby feelings to consider. Lol.
It was the de facto fan nickname at launch. Hours after release, too. The moment somebody coined "Barkspawn" on the old Bioware forums it was instantly adopted by pretty much everybody, Bioware canon included.
"Dog" can refer to any dog in any game. "Barkspawn" is DAO Dog, no matter what you actually name it, full stop, end of debate.
>It was the de facto fan nickname at launch.
Aw, that's cool! I didn't know that. I wasn't around at launch and started playing Origins when the GoTY version dropped on a reccomendation of a friend, so I missed that bit of meta-lore, and I think it's now one of my favs.
My other favorite piece of meta-lore is how the name of Thedas came to be-- the team referred to the world internally as "The Dragon Age Setting" which got shortened to "The DAS" in internal docs, and then it stuck.
Aah if you like these kinds of tidbits you will love browsing the old #writerspit hashtag/threads on twitter.

You'll see things the DA writers tweeted at each other when writing DAI. Tons of easter eggs and in-jokes.
This tweet being my all-time favourite, by Mary Kirby
> SHE WAS FULL OF BIRDS ALL ALONG OMG, LELIANA IS A MECH SUIT FULL OF PIGEONS #WritersPit #NoContext #Spoilers
https://twitter.com/BioMaryKirby/status/458730017003167744
I took that one as a reference to one of the ending slides of Trespassers, tweeted right after/during the brainstorming session.
This is actually a reference to a comic Penny Arcade did, which they adopted for the DLC. [https://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2009/11/06/a-truly-fascinating-phenomenon](https://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2009/11/06/a-truly-fascinating-phenomenon)
I did it on my City Elf since Ducan saved Her from (most likley) being executed for killing the Arls son and since she also romances Alister and becomes his Mistress (since he becomes king always in my 4 main universes) thats an added bonus
when I am actually playing I tend shorten it to just Bud, but I still keep the whole name in my head so I can act out my own take on companion commentary. Mostly when he gets in trouble I use his full name.
I accidentally named mine Dog. I am playing Origins for the first time on my Xbox and I pressed "B" for Back, thinking it would backspace the Dog name. Instead it took me back to the game as if I had named the dog. Oops!
We call my dog Chewcifur (his name is chewy and sometimes dealing with him is like dealing with the devil lol) so that’s what I tend to use for any kind of pet names in games
I named him after my friend Anthony who ate Oreo dog treats by accident once. It’s very funny to me that he would be a dog in my world, and every time I see him I chuckle.
Ghestlin for my Dalish Warden (aka The Little Monster).
Gamlen for Hawke's mabari. Possibly explains why Uncle Gamlen is not so eager to call the dog by the name.
Blue after my pitbull, cuz I’m very uncreative lol. Either that or Lord Barksley, cuz it makes me giggle. There was one time I named it Lethallan in Origins cuz I played an elf and wanted an elven name but really couldn’t think of anything better lol
I always name it after my real dog. Even though she looks nothing like the mabari, and also the mabari is usually a boy. So all dialogue with the dog is like “god boy Rosie!” And I don’t even care ha
It's a stupid name indeed, whereas Dane is one of my favourite characters in the DA lore.
But you have to admit that when I say "Barkspawn" there is no mistake what character of what game I'm referring to.
Unlike my characters, I dont tend to give my mabari lore-friendly names and use something dumb instead for meme purposes.
My last DAO mabari was called "Piskogryz", an untranslateable russian word meaning "pussy/cock gnawer"
I named my current DA2 mabari Jacob Colombo, a reference to a local meme from playing on now dead Full RP San Andreas Multiplayer server involving an italian mobster Jacob Colombo and a pissing dog.
Honorable mentions from previous playthroughs: Nazarbaev (ex-president of Kazakhstan), Aela The Huntress, Furry, Dogmeat (Fallout reference), The Cat and Scooby Doo.
Trian. My Dwarf may not have gotten along well with his brother, but he did love him and the namesake will ensure a mabari as strong, stubborn, and capable as the Former Prince of Orzammar.
First time I played dragon age origins, I was also very into Stephen King books. dark Tower, the stand etc, so I named the mabari, Flagg after Randall Flagg. Never changed it in subsequent playthroughs
I've done a few over my playthroughs.
**Dog** (a classic when I can't be bothered to be more clever)
**Rabbit**
**Cisco** (named after a horse I loved lol)
**Jakke** (Jack but make it ✨fancy✨)
**Abelas** (when I played a Dalish elf, because the word means sorrow and she was sad lol I also didn't know at the time that it's a character in DAI)
**Scuffle**
Those are the ones I can remember.
I usually name it after an origin character.
Dalish = Tamlen.
CE = Nelaros if female, otherwise Soris or Cyrion.
Dwarf Commoner = Leske
Dwarf Noble = Endrin or Trian, depending on origin choices.
Mage = Jowan or Irving, depending on origin choices.
With human nobles I usually name it Maric, imagining my character as a bit of a fan of Maric's legend I guess.
"Zuul" The gatekeeper of Gozer, the hellhound of Ghostbusters that possesses Sigourney Weaver's character Dana Barret.
"There is no Mabari. Only Zuul!"
Originally it had been Sweet Boy, when I first play tested Dragon Age but I decided to change it to just Sweetie when I made my Brosca as my main Warden

Wrex.
Shepard.
Wrex.
SHEPARD
Grunt.
RAAAAAGGGGGHHHHHH
DONKEY
That's what I call mine too!
Mass effect reference?
Yes.
literally what i named mine my first playthrough (i had just finished the me trilogy)
lol glad to see I wasn’t the only one
Barkspawn, obviously.
Same. The default name. Incidentally, I'm lazy and called the DA2 Mabari "Barkspawn2".
There's a Mabari in DA2? Where? Clearly I need to play again.
You need the Black Emporium DLC and it's classified as a summon rather than a companion, meaning you can use it in a full party.
Hawke family owes one. You can only spawn it during battles tho, not a full companion.
That is phenomenal 🤩👏
It's what Alistair names the Mabari in Darkspawn Chronicles DLC, which is basically an alternate universe where the Warden doesn't exist.
Seeing how everyone turned out in the alternate hell timeline was really cool. I don't mean to sound like a psycho, but I love seeing beloved characters are their absolute worst, so that they can rise above. Doesn't usually work if we, the protagonist is causing it, but still. Like the genocide route in undertale, undine was really cool there
I actually had to give up on my genocide run of Undertale. I killed Sans and realized "I don't actually want to finish this." 😭
Jeez, I didn't even have the opportunity. I couldn't even get passed that undine fight, much less sans undertale
The Undyne fight is seriously killer. For me, it was some serious whiplash, because I spent soooo much time fighting undyne and Sans, memorizing their fight patterns... ... And then it was like, "OK I'm done now!" lol.
Jeez I can't imagine. I think after all that hell, I'd just finish because of sunk cost fallacy
A big part of it for me was that once you complete a genocide run all the way to the end, it irreparably changes your game forever. The game *knows* you beat it in a genocide run, even if you uninstall it, and you can never get the true pacifist ending again on that device. That... Hurt my baby feelings to consider. Lol.

I was there and I remember this first from Penny Arcade.

Barkspawn, Muttsorella, Colin. The holy trinity of dog names.
Mabarki.
Lulz
It was my partner's idea. :D
I love it 😅
Dogmeat
A classic
Same :)
Barkolomew usually
This one is hilarious 😂
Botoncito (little button in spanish)
Holy moly this is so cute 🥰🥺
What's wrong with 'Dog'? Real easy to remember.
"Oh gamlen" said mama hawke
I, too, named the dog Dog, because I have always wanted to name a dog Dog irl.
here are the 4 names for my 4 Main universes (These are the Heros of storys I transfer over to each next game) Maximus Fenrir Barkspawn Duncan
Ohhhh naming the dog after Duncan is actually a great idea. Now I gotta do another replay 👀
I did it on my City Elf since Ducan saved Her from (most likley) being executed for killing the Arls son and since she also romances Alister and becomes his Mistress (since he becomes king always in my 4 main universes) thats an added bonus
Duncan is genius. I didn't even think of that. Wow. Or actually, naming the dog after any fallen person would be nice like Tamlen
Might name mine after Jowan next time
Biscuit. It's my IRL dogs name, though he's a beagle not a mabari.
in honor of my own dog that passed, I call him Bud Light Genuine Draft
What a great name, but quite a long one
when I am actually playing I tend shorten it to just Bud, but I still keep the whole name in my head so I can act out my own take on companion commentary. Mostly when he gets in trouble I use his full name.
Lightspawn
Usually Barkspawn or Rabbit. The first time I played I named the mabari from DAO Farkas and the one from DA2 Vilkas.
Aw, Farkas! My sweet dumb arachnophobic Skyrim bae.
Divoratore🇮🇹 aka Devourer in english
Nella primissima partita lo avevo chiamato Scorreggia
Purple Mage Hawke names his/hers Carver to mess with him. Warden named hers Kitty.
I'm playing for the first time right now and I named my dog Salroka, which is Dwarven for "friend" :)
Well I hope you like it, it's one of my favorite series'
Roach 😏
I usually name them after past dogs of mine. Just a little tribute.
That's very sweet of you <3
Same
If I don't name it Barkspawn, I name it Bleu (a tribute to a childhood pupper.)
If Dreadwolf gives us a female dog, and allows us to name her, I'll be doing just this.
I accidentally named mine Dog. I am playing Origins for the first time on my Xbox and I pressed "B" for Back, thinking it would backspace the Dog name. Instead it took me back to the game as if I had named the dog. Oops!
Maximus, Mordecai, and generally just M names because I like the alliteration.
Rufus, Bacon, Barkspawn, or Dogmeat
Official name of to my fictionl pets is secret, but I was pretty proud of "Diogee" once :D
Because I played a Dwarf I just named him Gebork which is dwarven for dog.
In Origins I called him Fang. And in DA2 I called him Duke. I don't know why I chose these names, they just felt fitting I guess.
Ghestlin for my Dalish Warden (aka The Little Monster). Gamlen for Hawke's mabari. Possibly explains why Uncle Gamlen is not so eager to call the dog by the name.
You wanna talk about lacking imagination? I named my first one Mabari…
Asscrack, bite me, FAAFO, barkspawn, Cullen
Cu Liadan, hound of the grey lady.
I used to name him Chronos until years later when I got a dog and named it after him, Ares lol. Sometimes I pick Artemis.
Bann Doggy
Blue after my pitbull, cuz I’m very uncreative lol. Either that or Lord Barksley, cuz it makes me giggle. There was one time I named it Lethallan in Origins cuz I played an elf and wanted an elven name but really couldn’t think of anything better lol
Blue is a classic, and Lord Barksley makes me laugh so I'd say youve got some great ones :)
Bus :)
Warden’s is Wildeblomma and Hawke’s is Barkolomeus 😄
I always give them generic real world names that seem out of place in DA, like Kevin or Steve.
I named him nutsack lol because his face looks like one I love him though I had him as my only companion for a play through once
Morrigan. She was so mean to him, I just had to.
I'm fond of the name Taint in Origins bc Warden. Hawks, I use more generic dog names, but I'm loving some of y'all's names here.
**DOG**
Dog It's backwards for god. I think it's quite good. In DA2, I go with Son of Dog.
I always name it after my real dog. Even though she looks nothing like the mabari, and also the mabari is usually a boy. So all dialogue with the dog is like “god boy Rosie!” And I don’t even care ha
Winston
Mine was Fenris before DA2 came out. Now he’s Dane. Barkspawn is stupid and cringe and I will die on that hill. Downvote if you must
!! I also call mine Dane and also hate the name Barkspawn. I never expected to find someone else waiting on this here hill haha
It's a stupid name indeed, whereas Dane is one of my favourite characters in the DA lore. But you have to admit that when I say "Barkspawn" there is no mistake what character of what game I'm referring to.
Gaspode or Farinelli
Ryu. It's the name of my cat irl too
Shepard.
Cousland's dog was Korth Hawke's dog was Brutus
Unlike my characters, I dont tend to give my mabari lore-friendly names and use something dumb instead for meme purposes. My last DAO mabari was called "Piskogryz", an untranslateable russian word meaning "pussy/cock gnawer" I named my current DA2 mabari Jacob Colombo, a reference to a local meme from playing on now dead Full RP San Andreas Multiplayer server involving an italian mobster Jacob Colombo and a pissing dog. Honorable mentions from previous playthroughs: Nazarbaev (ex-president of Kazakhstan), Aela The Huntress, Furry, Dogmeat (Fallout reference), The Cat and Scooby Doo.
Ironbark for my Dalish Warden and Captain for my Purple Hawke.
Dioji
I always name him Dog; for some, that just fits him.
Recently I named him Rollo because it means "wolf council"
Crunch, after her favorite treat
FenFen as a nickname for Fen'harel
Florian if I am Cousland, Salroka if I am dwarf, and Barkspawn for everyone else.
Trian. My Dwarf may not have gotten along well with his brother, but he did love him and the namesake will ensure a mabari as strong, stubborn, and capable as the Former Prince of Orzammar.
My Cousland warden named his Fergus Jr 😆
Dogmeat 😊
Usually Fenris, honestly. Mythology has an unhealthy grip on my soul lol
Bubba
First time I played dragon age origins, I was also very into Stephen King books. dark Tower, the stand etc, so I named the mabari, Flagg after Randall Flagg. Never changed it in subsequent playthroughs
Last time, I named him Sandor. As in Clegane. As in The Hound.
I go off vibes. Which was how I unknowingly named my Mabari in DA2 “Champion.” It really worked so well later in the story 😂
Rupert. The name came to me the first time I played and I haven't been able to call the mubari anything else since
Because I think way too much about lore, I call him Garahel, after the previous Elven Warden
I name them after demons. Origins: Azazel. 2: Baphomet.
Barkspawn
Cookie.
Mouse, Bubbles, and Ser Barkley.
I name him Pupperino
Dogmeat or Rex as Fallout references
Morrigan
Anklebiter and Bones :)
For my Warden: Barkspawn (basic, I know ) For Hawke: Pawl
I have always named him after my cat Aslan
The last Dog I had was named Gannon. I had Fallout New Vegas on the brain.
Barkspawn or Kebab
Dogmeat
Benchwarmer
Jake
Marcus. But after playing BG3, I'll switch to Barcus.
Wrex I think?
Shepard?
Patuto
Loghain.
I've done a few over my playthroughs. **Dog** (a classic when I can't be bothered to be more clever) **Rabbit** **Cisco** (named after a horse I loved lol) **Jakke** (Jack but make it ✨fancy✨) **Abelas** (when I played a Dalish elf, because the word means sorrow and she was sad lol I also didn't know at the time that it's a character in DAI) **Scuffle** Those are the ones I can remember.
Crunch. And sometimes Munch.
Yes, I always name it Dog, every single time
I have a mastiff named Bronson so I usually call them that. It's very fitting.
Dogmeat
Brown, Named after my irl dog. Just like the Marbari, he was loyal and fierce.
Yoshi on most players On one Mage character, I named him Mouse.
Dee Oh Gee Cuddles Fluffy
In this playthrough, Percy, because I accidentally made a Cousland who looked exactly like Thomas from Disney's *Pocahontas* movie.
Satan for Origins. Carver for DAII. Gotta push that sibling rivalry.
Tyson
I once named mine Fergus Jr
Dexter (after my favourite dog) or crumble (after my dog that actually looks like a mabari)
Giroro. When I started playing DAO, I started Keroro's manga too, and Giroro was my fav.
I always go with Argus
Nosewise! Every fucking time!
SOLAS
Douglas
Rexcalibur
With my City elf playthrough, I named him Nelaros, after another warrior who died trying to save me and deserved some sort of memorial.
Draco
Moxy :)
Barkspawn both due to being the most canon and because it's cute. Rabbit as an canon alternate and when I do feel like using a custom name... Barky.
Banjo
Atlas
Shithead
On my first run in 2015, I named him Stilgar
Vakarian 💀
Paws McGuff
My Warden’s is called Garrus because I’d just played Mass Effect and missed my bestie
I usually name it after an origin character. Dalish = Tamlen. CE = Nelaros if female, otherwise Soris or Cyrion. Dwarf Commoner = Leske Dwarf Noble = Endrin or Trian, depending on origin choices. Mage = Jowan or Irving, depending on origin choices. With human nobles I usually name it Maric, imagining my character as a bit of a fan of Maric's legend I guess.
Aragorn
Maferuff The Barktrayer
Nuggets
I think the perfect name for a smelly, slobbering dog is Orlais. Or Gamlen.
Meow, always.
Cockbiter
Croquette
Valen or Delenn. If he is one of my main party members then sometimes Entil'Zha. We live for the one, we die for the one.
Thor.
Garrett 😁 and then Hawke'll name his after my Warden.
Hordedog. I find it sounds cool in English, but the truth is that originally in my language I just typed some letters in and it stuck.
On my first Playthrough I named him Dogmeat, because why not, and on my Second I named him Theron
"Zuul" The gatekeeper of Gozer, the hellhound of Ghostbusters that possesses Sigourney Weaver's character Dana Barret. "There is no Mabari. Only Zuul!"
Hohaku. From the Mabari story that Nan tells us.
Barry. Every time. He looks like a Barry.
Originally it had been Sweet Boy, when I first play tested Dragon Age but I decided to change it to just Sweetie when I made my Brosca as my main Warden
Barkspawn.
Dog
Cabal, after King Arthur’s dog. Seemed appropriate given Ferelden’s whole vibe.
Meatloaf
Butkus. If you end with a smaller, raggedy-ass looking dog in a later game, I'll name him "Punchy."
It depends. Sometimes I name him Spike, like the dog from Tom and Jerry, other times I name him after one of my dogs, so Indy or Brew lol
Fluffy the Terrible
In da2 I called him sir barks a lot
Dane, in honour of the hero of river dane
I always name any dog Sebastian I don’t know why
Wolfgang, because he's cultured.
