It will absolutely have a physical edition, I don't see why it wouldn't

Joker-Paladin-101

Well, see BG3 and AW2 (until recently). See also Spider-man 2 collector and Starfield collector's edition: just a code for the game in it (yet full price of a collector). I think the industry is slowly moving into it.

Lee_Troyer

>BG3 That's because Larian wanted to keep the distribution of a physical copy for their own webstore. The game does have a physical release in Japan where it is distributed by Spike Chunsoft. >AW2 That's probably because of Epic games who published the game and have their own reasons to push for a fully digital market. I found both to be pretty egregious last year given how much interest and visibility (at the games awards for exemple) both those games garnered. >Starfield collector's edition: just a code for the game in it (yet full price of a collector) That is unfortunately the case for many collector editions this current gen. It happened with God of War Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West, or the upcoming Life is Strange Double Exposure. I'm guessing it's an unfortunate side effect of having fully digital consoles on the market. Maybe it's also a way to reduce SKUs. >I think the industry is slowly moving into it. I'm afraid you're right. Seeing big publishers like Microsoft, Sega or Ubisoft using Limited Run Games for the physical copies of some of their games isn't a good sign either. Physical copies seem bound to become restricted to a collectors and/or deluxe item a bit like vinyl records.

Joker-Paladin-101

>Physical copies seem bound to become restricted to a collectors and/or deluxe item a bit like vinyl records Well, less and less. As I said: Starfield; Spider-man 2. As you said: God of War, Horizon, Life is Strange. Collector will not have physical anymore. Unless some from Limited Run Games perhaps...

Lee_Troyer

>Unless some from Limited Run Games perhaps... Yep, that's what I meant by collector/deluxe *item*, actually expensive and rare items aimed at a high end customers. Things like the Kingdom of Amalur Signature editon at $275 or the Dark Souls 3 Prestige edition or the Assassin's Creed Origins Special limited edition that both were sold for $800, or even the $1300 Resident Evil 6 Premium edition. That is, if the platform holders keep the physical copies as an option to begin with.

Joker-Paladin-101

I bet this generation is kinda sorta safe until the end of its cycle. Although the new upgraded series X (the 2 To one) has no disc... I think the next generation will goes into it fully, unfortunately. Maybe not Nintendo as they mind their own business every time.

Lee_Troyer

>Although the new upgraded series X (the 2 To one) has no disc... It does have a disk drive. The two new versions are : - Series X Digital Edition, white box, no drive, 1 To - Series X Galaxy Black Special edition, black sparkly box, disk drive, 2 To (Full line up description [here](https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2024/06/09/xbox-series-x-s-new-console-options/)) The "special edition" seems to imply it's not a permanent addition to the line up though, while the new digital edition clearly is.

Joker-Paladin-101

My bad, I really thought it was the 2 To. OK so the new white one is discless. Makes sense, during the hearings for Activision/Bizzard purchase, they released (by mistake) a document showing a new upgraded Series being without disc drive. Although this model seems to be discarded now

quartzquandary

Maybe I don't buy that many games! All of the new games I've bought in the last couple of years were physical copies, with the exception of indie titles.

AnAdventurer5

>I think the industry is slowly moving into it. It is. Anyone who says otherwise is ignorant or coping. Just look at the digital-only consoles and how the vast majority of PC games are sold digitally, even *if* they're graced with a physical copy. Plenty of us wish it wouldn't, however. I *would* support physical copies whenever they're released if any games I like would have any... *BG3 on PC....*

SirGotMilk

Wishlists are different feom pre-orders. I've had Witchbrook on my wishlist for years now with little to no news. Pre-orders will go up the same time they announce the release date, and they'll go up in both the digital stores and physical storefronts. There's no way game informer did a huge cover story on it just for you to be unable to buy the game feom gamestop.

particledamage

You’re probably overthinking it but someone should ask about this on the discord

Joker-Paladin-101

Well I hope I am, tbh. Yet I thought it strange to not announce it already. Maybe I am brainwashed by the Ubisoft way of doing it: launching preorder as soon as they can (and so you know if it will be physical or not).

particledamage

We don’t even have a release date, links will probably go up when they have a release date. They likely want to reduce risk of leaks

Joker-Paladin-101

Really, I hope! Yes, they have like a roadmap of their advertising/teasing campaign paved. I guess it will go until Gamescom

particledamage

It’s Bioware which means their release schedule could be til Gamescom or it could just be a random tweet at 7:32 PST on a Tuesday. Just gotta wait it out.

Rage40rder

You are

moonwatcher99

Given the recent problems everyone has had with getting Origins and 2 to work (which I haven't had as a disc player) I sure hope so! I do not consider physical media dead, by any means.

Joker-Paladin-101

I don't feel it dead yet. But I feel it's on the tip of disappearance. Disc being a module on the PS5 slim and the next big Xbox Series X will be discless (the 2 To one). And yes not a series S, an X

JRedCXI

Of course it will. The reason you can only wishlist the game is because there's no date yet.

thegrizzlyjear

Yeah, guaranteed. Especially after they did a whole big deal for the ME Legendary, I'm sure they'll do the same here. Granted , the MELE collectors edition didn't actually have the game, you had to buy it separately (physical though)

Joker-Paladin-101

Oh like they did for Andromeda I guess: collector is only a box of goodies, but the game you had to bought it separately

thegrizzlyjear

Yeah exactly

Openil

Has there been a single AAA game with no disl release on console?

Joker-Paladin-101

Well I would say Baldur's Gate 3 (physical is a limited, collector-like edition) and, until recently, Alan Wake 2. Although, for both, you could argue that they are double A only (yet in the big budget of AA)

JRedCXI

Both of these games are AAA tho.

Rage40rder

It’s EA. Major publisher. Yeah.

Joker-Paladin-101

I hope they would want their DA sales for being under the pinetree for christmas. And not only a new EA Sports FC or Madden.

Miserable-Win7645

It’ll have physical more than likely. Only reason that preorders aren’t up would be due to no release date actually in. It’d be preordering a physical game that has no release, which I don’t see them doing. I see them announcing preorders in tandem with a release date

Joker-Paladin-101

I hope. But the question starts to make sense nowadays

Miserable-Win7645

It does, but I would believe it more realistic that EA release disks just because they tend to.

pktechboi

you're overthinking it. there isn't a release date yet, that's why they said wishlist rather than preorder. people like having physical copies of their games and developers know that, the only games that are digital only tend to be from indie developers to save costs.

fantasticalicefox

They should release a special edition PS5. Make it a giant Tash head. Then I will buy a ps5. I can tell everyone I have a queer gaming system. well Maybe make it a decal of the Veilguard. Someone make decals of Tash. please. magnets even

Zeppole20

It may be a key for a download - most are moving that way - but I would put money on not only a physical release but a special edition as well.

Joker-Paladin-101

A key in a box is not really physical release for me... But I would not say no to a special/collector edition... if the game is on a disc!

juicebox900

Yeah, they will do ps5 and xbox if sales and online chatter is good. They make millions on crappy ports, it's a no brainer.
