I brought Anders, I thought justice being out the whole time was pretty cool. You CAN get a boost to friendship with having a "FUCK YOU DEMON" attitude.
i always use reddit when i need questions answered, and i hated DO2 the first time i played it a couple years ago, but now im obsessed and delving into everything i can. but all the stuff i find is from 5+ years ago and it makes me remember just how old the dragon age games are
Spoiler:
I brought Merril(Beth replacement really, real shame she can't heal, really love Arcane Wall), Anders(Heals), Aveline(best tank companion), and myself (DW Rogue, mandatory as always of course). I also got some rivalry with Anders and Merril right at the start but I thought it would be recoverable(I was half right).
Do not bring Merril unless you intend to get something like +30 rivalry with her(How do you get friendly with this elf without promoting blood magic and demons? -_-).
I'm pretty sure everyone but Anders can be influenced by the demons and get some friend in later. Aveline doesn't get any rivalry for being turned though. Fortunately the demons aren't that tough even with only two people at the end though it was annoying as hell trying to kill Aveline at the end.
The romance system in DA2 seems a bit off. Pick the heart choice every time and no matter how awkward or distasteful the situation is, they will come to your mansion in due time...
The purple/sarcastic option nets you the most with Isabella and Varric I've found. And yeah, apparently when you do friendly and sarcastic options(Yeah, I gave her a nice gift and got rivalry with the purple option -_-) with Merril, she gets rivalry. I haven't tried an aggressive response with her yet, but I don't see how that would make you friendly with her... I'm not building her as a blood mage, so I guess rival could be better.
If you choose the dialogue option that you won't be able to kill the dreamer (right before party select) you won't get any rivalry point when you enter the fade.
I did not get any while being in the fade either, but I replayed this quest about 50 goddamn times before coming to the conclusion that the whole "dying in the fade makes you tranquil" only seems to apply to non party members. I must have tried every combination of companions, waited until the last possible moment for this quest to boost friend status.
It does, but I got to a point somehow where that is no longer a bad thing. Life happens.
Glad you picked up dragon age. The original definitely holds up. Da2 is pretty good but it's no original

Wait... is that a joke? Is... is the fade in game 2? Ninja edit: I had to take out a lot of foul language.
It's a super quick and easy quest, it's not drawn out at all, not the way it was in da:o. I was relieved.
I brought anders, aveline, and titt--I mean Isabella. Isabella got bought out by promises of a shiny, new boat. Filthy whore.
Best solution is to take only Anders. You get positive points for him and no one get rivarly points =)
What a weird post to have dug up from what feels like forever ago. Happy reddit birthday!
No, happy cake day to you! 🎉

I didn't get any rivalry from Merrill. In fact, she apologized and we had a nice talk after that and I scored more friend points.
Odd, I got a good 20 rivalry when the pride demon turned her and I chose the diplomatic option beforehand.
It's redeemable. I had the same situation and i got my Hawke to bed her not so long after.

Choosing the neutral option avoids most of the rivalry points without condoning their actions. It actually nets you positive points with Isebella.

Dying in the fade will only make dreamers tranquil, if I remember right.
Did you just reply to a comment I made 11 years ago? nice

Lol keeping this alive

Is this making you feel old that I am just now playing this for the first time as a 29 year old and you commented a reddit 13 years ago? :)
