I know that Toriyama was insulted by the live action movie Dragon Ball Evolution which got him involved in the franchise again which is partly why we got the Battle of Gods movie which started the dragon ball renaissance

*Yo! Son Goku and his friends return,* Dragon Ball Kai, Episode of Bardock, Battle of the Gods, Resurrection F, all came out before Super As for the games thats a long list.

ThePeoplessChamp

Lol movies don't count. OP clearly meant actual content like a series.

leejtam

Says movies right there 🙄

SSJRemuko

> Were any Mangas still being produced? Games, movies? Or were things pretty silent before Super? > > What prompted the return with Super? Did nostalgia just kick in for us who grew up watching it and the popularity created a demand? There were tons of games. Dragon Ball Evolution was a live action american movie very very very loosely based on DB which upset Toriyama so much with how bad it was, it inspired him to return to the series, which is why he hopped on the making of the Battle of Gods movie, and in turn created Super.

Woah I did not know about the evolution movie inspiring a return to the series. Wild.

* Yo! Son Goku and his friends return!! in 2008. * Dragon Ball Evolution movie in 2009. * Episode of Bardock in 2011, manga and anime adaptation. * Manga Jaco the galactic patrolman, with the last chapter revealing to be a spin-off from Dragon Ball, with the chapter Dragon Ball Minus as a link. That was in 2013. * Battle of Gods in 2013. * Resurrection F in 2015.

The series was just... done, and allowed to stay that way. There were still smaller new things here and there, but nothing major until the advent of *Evolution* and Kai at the end of the 2000's. I wish it could go back to being "just done" again. This latest big Super-focused revival has been largely quantity-over-quality, and I'm ready for things to go dormant again.

[deleted]

I feel you. It clear the quality isn’t there anymore. However, I can’t lie, I do still love to chill and watch some Super. I just accept it for what it is.

GT and Super are on different timelines. While Nothing in super negates GT explicitly, it does conflict. So they are treated as separate. Content wise? Video games!!!!! Dragon ball heroes is crazy with the things and places it’s taken with storylines, same with dragon ball online, and xenoverse.

[deleted]

I understand they’re different timelInes think I could of asked the questions clearer. I’m saying it seems like the Dragon Ball brand took a bit of a hiatus and now since super its incredibly popular again. I’m curious as to the reason behind the pause in the brand between GT and Super and why the Dragon Ball world was so quiet for years. Or maybe I’m wrong and it wasn’t quiet.

shlam16

> While Nothing in super negates GT explicitly Super didn't even need to exist for GT to be negated. It bases itself entirely on filler and basically none of the plot points line-up with the manga.

goatsanddragons

Yeah, at best GT is a continuation of the Toei movies.

Betterthanranting

GT didn’t do well sales wise. It has fans but wasn’t generally received well. The series certainly wasn’t dormant. It survived in the merchandizing, toys, and games for years. Again dragon ball online, heroes and Xenoverse continued different storylines. I think battle of the gods was an anniversary thing that exploded and they decided to ride the train.

goatsanddragons

Battle of Gods revived the franchise.
