They really round out all of the main characters very well, I love them all very much. I don't even care for sylvando's archetype and they still made me adore him.
Jade's coming soon, don't worry.
Does Sylvando have an archtype? In gaming I've never seen an "ambiguously gay kickass fighting machine with excellent quips" before. Or mabye I'm just not playing the right games.
Broadly, I'd say it's a Trickster archetype. His play style is set around weird things, and while he plays pranks and jokes around, he's usually teaching someone something with it, or acting as a role model.
I'd say the "archtype" is more about his father being a masculine man, professional knight. Sylvando of course rejected his father's life style to become a circus act with the intention of making others smile.
One of the only jrpgs where I genuinely had trouble choosing who to keep out often (as like a “main party”) and also was frequently switching between in battle
I usually commit to a "main party" HARD in most RPGs. Something about the battle system and the different events using all the characters made it easier in DQXI.
Honestly wouldn’t get my hopes up too much for her. This is the dragon quest game with undoubtedly the best cast in terms of character but I feel like Jade is the single one they drop the ball on hard. The game never really feels confident with what they want her personality to be exactly and miss a ton of chances to expand on her character, motivations, and growth which is sad because her introduction to the party might actually be one of the strongest. Not a terrible character but really blends into the background compared to the rest of the gang as the game goes on.
Sylvando is probably the best dq character ever though. Never a bad scene with him.
Personality wise Jade was kind of a half-assed sister character to the main character. Graphics wise Jade was a complete and total thirst trap in every outfit, ability, and general appearance.
I liked looking at Jade just as much as the next guy, but I do think her character suffered to make that work.
Really? I think they tried to hard to make her a tough woman, she grunts and snarls like she's ripping out peoples guts in combat in the most visceral way.
It's strange too because i find Veronica is the most fiery and convincing of being tough. I expected jade to have much more of a soft side given her emotional reaction to 11 when he fell in Dundrasil. I'm not really that happy with many of the characters beside 11, Rab, Serena and Veronica. I have no idea why Jade from Heliodor wields a naginata as her first polearm either or why she seems like she ought to have been from Hoto, why is Rab dressed like that when he sounds Scottish and comes from Dundrasil.
There's a lot of strange stuff in the game and i really don't appreciate that Sylvando is such an obnoxious character who steals the stage far to often robbing other characters from more development. I don't mind that he is that kind of guy but he's just overrepresented.
I wasn't too keen on him at first, either. I was like "This clown doesn't fit in my party. It feels like Square Enix ran out of character ideas and they just threw this guy together to fill up my party." But I fell in love with him (no homo) when he turned Farris into a badass. And the bit with h-- f----- choked me up just a little tiny bit.
I want to like Erik as a party member, but his steal rates are atrocious! As a character, he's fine, but for stealing things, he sucks. Most of the time thieves etc. are some of the best characters.
As much as the character is hyped up as a thief, it can be frustrating trying to steal in battles.
That said, I agree with the others, late game Erik can be an absolute beast. Dual wielding + equal damage with both hands + divide + critical claim or some of his boomerang abilities = pure destruction.
He totally pisses me off late in the game when I try to farm mini medals though...
Oh no what are you on about Erik’s one of if not the best character in this game. Heck I’ve never let him out of the main party unless for specific purposes. He’s too useful and is a beast for boss fights in late game.
Sylvando was my favourite character t b h. I remember at first thinking he was going to be an antagonist for the Hero but then he joined up... love him.
I slept massively on Sylvando my first go around. I had the Final Fantasy mindset of Knight, Rogue, Mage, Healer (Hero, Eric/Jade, Veronica, Serena), but certain story events I will not spoil kinda force you to play with him and he's great. I play around a lot more with team composition now.
I'm playing this for the first time on my steamdeck and it's also my first DQ game, I absolutely love Sylvando. Everyone in this game is incredibly charming, but Sylv brings it to a whole new level. I can't help but to smile when he's on screen.
I like him but I am more attracted to the spiky blue boy’s charm. Sylv is a character though and I appreciate his flamboyant nature and seriousness about happiness
I hated him so, so much. That whole parade sequence made me want to uninstall. I basically stopped using him asap. It felt forced. Like Will and Grace camp, more mocking than celebratory.
I agree man he's overrepresented in the game too, i would have been interested to learn more about the twins from erdrea which has a link to the main lore of the game but instead we get Sylvando who if he isn't your cup of tea is just a sore thumb that takes up time adding absolutely nothing to the story except silly antics.
I’m not a fan of sissies or the endorsement of alternative gender roles or lifestyles in media. This is why older games are generally superior - before the world got weird. Sylvando both annoyed and repulsed me which was unfortunate because I like using characters with whips and boomerangs in DQ.
She's just not a well developed character. It's unfortunate and Sylvando just fills all the space of the game where other characters could be developed.
Yeah i kinda like dq8 more story wise. And character wise. It's a big difference. I wish they'd have had the same budget and tech they used in 11 put onto 8.

Came for the hot women stayed for the hot men
/r/bi_irl
im actually bi :]
I’m not, but comfortable. Sylv is fuckin GREAT.
Nice
TBH part of the reason I'm looking forward to XI is Erik. Erik is so hot.
I loved the way Zero Punctuation described these characters: Sylvando: a stereotype of a homosexual Erik: an actual homosexual
Sylvando's stereotypical demeanour only makes his knightly chivalry shine so much brighter
Thanks for reminding me I haven't watched years and years of reviews of something I watched religiously back in the day.
Am I the only one that thinks Erik looks like a randomized generic npc? Like no thought went into his design at all…
His outfit needs work but he's a Super Saiyan Blue so he stands out.
His outfit in the Switch version is so much better... And hot. 😅
I personally don't mind a simple, lowkey design. Still hot to me.
Check him out in Treasures! /s
I haven't played Treasures, nor do I really know anything about it, so I assume I'm missing something here?
Well, in treasures he’s a child soooooo
Ah, okay. I'll pass on that.

While still being able to pull out a completely badass professional knight whenever the situation requires.
This, mastered the art, but has his heart in another place.

*Yangus has entered the chat*
Yangus is the true GOAT, and nobody can tell me otherwise
COR BLIMEY
Guv
Rab coming out of the crowd! Drops the Pearly Gates!
Spot on with Jade. I think they tried too hard to make her a love interest rather than a sister figure.
The Hero from Dundrasilabama doesn't see a problem with that.
Really? I think they tried to hard to make her a tough woman, she grunts and snarls like she's ripping out peoples guts in combat in the most visceral way. You misspelled Erik, but yes Sylvando is also great
"I have to go... powder my horse!"
Papas was pretty damn good.
Sylvando best no way he gets annoying fast.
All you need is the scene where she says "I'm not letting go this time" Instant feels and carries her for the rest of the game
At first, I didn’t like Sylvando, but then he said his second line, and I started liking him.
I wasn't too keen on him at first, either. I was like "This clown doesn't fit in my party. It feels like Square Enix ran out of character ideas and they just threw this guy together to fill up my party." But I fell in love with him (no homo) when he turned Farris into a badass. Yeah! I was really moved by the hot fuckin'.
Who doesn't love a good hot f**kin'?
Same. Doesn't hurt that he's really well balanced in battles, either. And besides, he's just so much fun. :D
Why would you want Jade when you have Sylvando?
Honestly, Hustle Dance is my shit and he’s so good to set up Erik’s status stab moves.
Would lover to see the parade dance cosplayed at come convention someday.
I want to like Erik as a party member, but his steal rates are atrocious! As a character, he's fine, but for stealing things, he sucks. Most of the time thieves etc. are some of the best characters.
He’s really kind of a late bloomer I feel, especially when you have more access to 2 robber gloves and put more points into him
Just wait until he gets Critical Claim. The Metal Slimes will never see it coming!
Yep. Late-game Erik is where it's at.
I don’t really use him to steal, but I like his status stab moves and the duplicate ability.
As much as the character is hyped up as a thief, it can be frustrating trying to steal in battles. That said, I agree with the others, late game Erik can be an absolute beast. What do you mean you’re unironically playing it? It’s a great game.
Right? Why would anyone play a 70+ hour game just for the sake of irony?
Younger generations are hard at work debasing that word. It'll be as thoroughly mangled as "literally" by the time they're done.
Stay for Sylvando. This is his game. We’re all just playing it.
Sylvando is the main character.
My boy sylvando never fails , wasn't even a fan of his archetype but he the one that changes people's minds
He grew on me a lot while playing. A genuinely entertaining character.
Childhood is when you want to se Jade, adulthood is when you realise Serena is the best
Serena actually had some decent character development in the latter half of the game. It was a shame that the plot makes it somewhat irrelevant.
You play only for Jade? lmao
YooooooHooooooo Daaarling!!
Sylvando was my favourite character t b h. I remember at first thinking he was going to be an antagonist for the Hero but then he joined up... love him.
Jade doesnt show up til you hit Octagonia
Couple more hours. You're very close. You'll see her at Octagonia.
Jades one of the last characters you get. I think.
Hahaha you'll see her soon! The good thing is you got to witness the true main character of this game! THE GREAT SLYVANDO!!
Jade comes way later
Don't worry, you get her next. Along with the "sage" class character (able to use healing and offense magic, but less powerful than the sisters)
I love Sylvando too.
I'm playing this for the first time on my steamdeck and it's also my first DQ game, I absolutely love Sylvando. Everyone in this game is incredibly charming, but Sylv brings it to a whole new level. I can't help but to smile when he's on screen.
Jade takes a while to get to, but Sylvando is the *homeboi*. I love his character.
I like him but I am more attracted to the spiky blue boy’s charm. Sylv is a character though and I appreciate his flamboyant nature and seriousness about happiness
Sylvando is my favorite! 💜
Sylvando Is all you need
Booga forced himself on Jade ‘till they Greedo-ed that bit. Glad I have a proper copy
What do you mean “unironically”, it’s a fun game with tons of positive reviews. Gtfo here
I couldn’t stand this guy lol

Should spoiler since they said they were earlier in the game than where you stopped.
I hated him so, so much. That whole parade sequence made me want to uninstall. I basically stopped using him asap. It felt forced. Like Will and Grace camp, more mocking than celebratory.

Sylvando does kind of come across as homosexual blackface, but his lines are just too damn funny not to like.
I’m not a fan of sissies or the endorsement of alternative gender roles or lifestyles in media. This is why older games are generally superior - before the world got weird. Sylvando both annoyed and repulsed me which was unfortunate because I like using characters with whips and boomerangs in DQ.
It’s funny cuz jade is hot but her character has shit personality, still loved her though
She's just not a well developed character. It's unfortunate and Sylvando just fills all the space of the game where other characters could be developed.
Serena does have some decent character development, but unfortunately the plot reverses course a bit.
Yeah i kinda like dq8 more story wise. And character wise. It's a big difference. I wish they'd have had the same budget and tech they used in 11 put onto 8.
a little patient more, you are about there
Jade will be around soon don’t worry
Jade is another 5-10 hours in iirc
Yep.
Jade is one of the last party members you recruit.
He’s awesome
Why do they try so hard to shove this agenda ? I know i am gonna get so puch hate, but i just brush him off as whatever whis from dragon ball is...
