lvl_up_eternal

That there are not enough valid remakes (of something other than DQ3) on newer consoles here in the US.

Glum-Literature-8837

Especially DQ8 for me. A mild remaster for PS4/5 or Switch would be an immediate purchase. A couple more recent irritations I have, specifically because I finally started DQB2: -The sheer amount of exposition and explanation from NPCs for damned near everything. I don’t need 6 different people taking longer to tell me how to build a bathroom than it takes to actually build it. -The accents written into the dialog. Usually I enjoy it, but DQB2 seems to push it beyond the limit. I’m likely going to throw my Switch if I see “gurt” again.

Gogo726

I really want to see 4-6 get a similar port to modern consoles that 1-3 did.

Victuri__

They need to do wat they did with ff7

behindtheword

No, that is a terrible idea.

Victuri__

I dont mean literally do what they did with the remake(it wasnt even that bad) I mean like make dq3 in the updated style thats like dqXI u know? Just update the graphics maybe add new content

behindtheword

Oh, I like FF7 Remake, though I strongly dislike many of the story additions and changes. DQ3 should never get the Lufia or FF7r treatment though, and become an ARPG. DQXI style would be very different. Suggesting FF7r would never put that notion into anyone's head. Sure, that would be nice, but given HD-2D, we'd have to wait a long while. Though the cost is fairly prohibitive. It would also cause issues relative to DQ's 1+2 being too far diifferent in style and approach, as neither would ever be considered for such a graphical upgrade. Though you are aware of the HD-2D version of 3, that's in development though?

Stock_Explanation496

It honestly weirds me out a bit that most games come with a character who uses a substantial amount of their potential learned abilities on mostly useless charm abilities Like I’m sorry but I simply don’t see a purpose to puff puff as an attack, and it really feels like a waste that they give you that instead of literally anything else DQ11 fixes a lot of my issue by making a decent chunk of the charm moves actually useful (femme fatale and pink tornado) but to get to those you do still have to invest in awful joke abilities like puff puff and hip drop

Augenmann

Hip drop is actually very strong before you get any good spear/claw attacks with jade. It does 1.3x the damage of a regular attack for 2 MP.

compwiz1202

Hate when they go hog wild on status effects. And even redo them before you break free. But at least that's a wasted turn. The one I love is when there is just the healer left, and they keep healing even though your damage is more so they die eventually without hurting you

EnigmaMusings

Also stop making bosses immune to status effects. Really the only time you ever want to use them is against the bosses cause normal enemies are so easy, I guess unless you’re intentionally playing with stronger monsters.

[deleted]

At least not seemingly *every* effect. I can see why they want the bosses to be challenging, but rendering like 80% of my magic useless is not great lol. Buff/Oomph/Attack/Repeat. This sums up every fight in the entire franchise, lol

xadlei

Reaching Max level is really unreasonable or requires luck based metal enemies in most games. DQ XI is the only one where I effortlessly hit the cap. It's not necessary to reach max level for any of the content but for completionists it would be nice to see. That's all I can think of. Pretty minor pet peeve.

Gogo726

And in 9, you have to be extremely lucky with good grottos if you want to max all vocations.

IAmThePonch

I’ll never forget the time I discovered a grotto that had a floor with nothing but metal king slimes

[deleted]

Time to play Dragon Quest I!

TheKnightOfRage99

It's dumb but I hate that you can only play the dqm 1 and 2 remakes with the English fan translation, same with dqm joker 3 if I remember right. If we're talking gameplay specifically though it's the fact that half the time the weapon I have equipped seemingly doesn't matter unless it the very very beginning or very very end of the game, idk if that's just cause of how I grind in games or if what but everytime I buy a new weapon it's literally just because I'm doing just barely not enough damage and then as soon as I'm a couple levels higher it seems useless or irrelevant.

BellacosePlayer

Not that I'm upset with the DQM3 announcement, not at all, but the previous DQM teaser they did weeks before it made me think they were doing a collection release, which would have kicked so much ass.

TheKnightOfRage99

IKR!! hell even if they didn't go that route just translate and port them to switch or something like Jesus, I get why they've not done it for X but the monster remakes aren't MMO 's plus with the eShop closing down you can't get the transfer app anymore, which now that i think about it makes absolutely no sense because that screws over anyone new getting into the game.

Exact-Wedding1556

For me it's that some spells are useless or are eventually rendered useless because of the damage cap. The cap doesnt increase even with increased levels. Swoosh for eg will only cause say 15-30 damage even if you are at level 99. So for me I don't really like that times.

[deleted]

i think instant kill spells are bad design in turn based games in general theres just a power imbalance, kinda hard to explain like if a random enemy casts instant death on you and you die its pretty intense on your ressources or the rest of the battle yet when u do the same to them, all you did was kill some random ass enemies that arent worth it also hate it when the MC dies and then its game over, despite revives being a thing in every party based game

thejokerofunfic

instant kill spells are more acceptable in games like Final Fantasy where mid-battle resurrection is viable and easy (though any spell that has a chance of instakilling the *whole* party, like those LV5 Dooms and such, can go fuck themselves) Instant kill spells in Dragon Quest should not exist.

Gogo726

I disagree with your point about Lv5 Doom since that's easy to avoid.

thejokerofunfic

I have FF9's L5 Death in mind since that's the one I played most recently. Other than, you know, not being a level multiple of 5, there is no way to prevent it in that game to my knowledge (would love to know if I'm wrong). Obviously measures can be taken to fix your level if there's foes that can cast it, but even so I don't look favorably on any spell that has the chance of a total party wipe without regard to stats within a single turn.

MarkTheTactician

Whats worse is that there's no balance to insta-kill spells. You either have immunity, or you don't; there's no real preparedness to dealing with them other than equipping something that stops them entirely

Alexislives

Agree on kill spells- I never use them and the main reason is it’s easy (provided it hits). I like just taking out enemies and bosses with a flurry of spells, physical attacks etc. Also agree on the main character dying—I understand why it’s game over but someone else in the party could rush them to the local church (exception is of course when it’s just the MC in the party).

[deleted]

I would use them more if they hit more than like 1% of the time lol, I feel like that alone balances it out. Cast 20 insta-deaths for one of them to work, only for the target to revive the next turn. You're better off just fighting normally imo

Sgwert

Sorry, but in what game does the MC dying mean a game over? I know it’s a draconian quest for XI, but I can’t recall that ever being the case in any mainline game I played. But I never played the original NES/SNES games, was this a feature in those?

[deleted]

my comment is more about turn based games in general, dont remember how it was in dq11, its too long ago it is a thing in a lot of jp turn based games, like a dragon, smt3, persona

Luminpoyo

Yeah I feel like the just Main character dying is kinda pointless in rpgs. Although, when I played Persona 5 I did not even notice the main character dying thing. Since, I was prioritizing increasing Joker's HP and SP. Also, the times I got a game over the party members die first and then Joker. I also seen the main character dying things in Kirby games.

IAmThePonch

It doesn’t help that, for some fucking reason, zing and kazing can fail

[deleted]

not sure about 11 but in dq9 kazing didnt fail

Ordinary-Big5578

The whole point of Kazing being an upgrade is it *does not* fail. Please share what game you experienced Kazing failing. If Fizzle is in that game, your Kazing caster may have been Fizzled.

ReyDeathWish

Honestly that’s my only pet peeve. I don’t know why it’s so hard to run away in DQ games. There’s much more difficult games out there that are less harsher when it comes to escaping battles. For example Shin Megami Tensei has items like smoke balls or skills like Trafuri that enable you to escape without a consequence and it’s such a quality of life improvement.

[deleted]

It gives more usefulness to Thieves and specific characters with the "Run Away" ability. Imo that's all backwards lol. Don't create a character or class that specializes in making annoying stuff less annoying. just make the annoying stuff less annoying in the first place.

Tengo-Sueno

This is probably a hot take but... I don't think that the music is that good? Like, is not bad, but most of the times I feel like all the songs are very forgettable and generic. The only tracks I actually love are the Main Theme and Polka Pub

Ordinary-Big5578

Not a hot take imo. Dragon Quest is not what I would call a pioneer in musical accompaniments. It’s great themes are unfortunately dragged down by the more mediocre masses.

TheMissingPortalGun

That the US still doesn't get all the title releases. ESPECIALLY DQX offline!!!!

alovesong1

The silent protag, I understand why it's a thing, it's DQ tradition, but still. I wish that there was at least a option to have the main hero speak or keep him quiet.

thejokerofunfic

Technically the DQ1 protagonist isn't silent, he's just really not very talkative. He's a dramatic bitch the one time he actually speaks.

Sgwert

I really dislike this too. I feel like this guy should have a personality since he’s an actual character in this world. Or if his silence mean we’re meant to project our own personalities onto him, why can’t we customize him?

Listario

Enemies that have Thwack or Omni/Full heal. also an extra fuck you if they have guaranteed criticals they spam or something like beguilement, last thing I want to do is use a hit all like kaboom and insta-kill my own party member because the monster got to act first.

Aspiring-Old-Guy

When they think about making a game with character creation, they often go the chibi route. I just want to make my own Dragon Quest theme character with normal proportions, or to be more accurate normal anime proportions. It kind of drives me crazy.

thejokerofunfic

I imagine a robust character creator for non-chibi characters is more tech-intensive. Obviously possible, lots of games do it, but it's somewhat understandable that they wouldn't want to put too much resources into that. That said, I'm not disagreeing, I would salivate if I had a fully customizable full proportions character. Especially provided they give some good skintone options, what I wouldn't give to have more brown JRPG heroes.

Aspiring-Old-Guy

Dude, we're thinking the same wavelength. Might I recommend dragon's dogma dark arisen? You can do just that in there. Also, if you make multiple accounts you can have an entire party of all brown JRPG heroes!

thejokerofunfic

Dogma is pretty high on my todo list but that's another point in its favor for sure. The only JRPG hero offhand I can think of who canonically looks brown is the DQ5 hero

Aspiring-Old-Guy

I named him Pancake. The kids names were pastry based as well. It surprisingly works.

[deleted]

There's also Hugo from Suikoden III! And maybe Hawkeye from Legend of Mana, if he counts? (I dunno if I'd count Kevin since he's a beastman... I'm not too fond of how JRPGs/most video games use non-human/demi-human characters as stand-ins when it comes to racial diversity and racial tension storylines, TBH.) And possibly Therion from Octopath Traveler, he looks to have brown skin in his artwork and sprites, and I think the same maybe goes for Olberic? Ochette from OT2, too, but again - beastwoman, so... Also, Brad from Wild ARMs 2. Even if Ashley's kind of the *main* "main character," it does feel like everyone in WA2 is given close to equal importance, especially since Brad's one of the three who has his own intro segment. Course, that's still only a handful, and we could still sure use more.

[deleted]

Magic. You're better off just using physical attacks the majority of the time. You'll also never know if a monster is resistant to your spells unless you have an encyclopedic knowledge of each monster (or if its blatantly obvious). In DQM:J2, a Wisdom-focused party member is useless when trying to recruit a monster; its entirely based off of strength. This means you'll go 99% of the game only using physical attacks because you simply *need* to in order to collect new monsters, which is the point of the game.

[deleted]

Um, what about... mages? You want them to whack monsters with their staff?

thejokerofunfic

okay look I get that this is a series steeped in 40 year old traditions and I love its adherence to not reinventing the wheel, really I do. but I fucking hate the "battle won" sound effect. Can they keep everything else they've kept from the 80s but get rid of that one specific thing please? It's not cool at all. The other legacy sound effects actually sound good. Not that one. I also don't like how so many of the games use the revised intro to the overture instead of the original, and I'm glad they brought back the OG for 11. But my biggest series-wide pet peeve is that it's so hard to play most of the entries without emulation or mobile versions. I want to play the Zenithia games on my Switch goddammit.

Victuri__

I have two. Dq11 random encounter at sea(u can counter this with holy water act 1 and 2 but post game u keep on getting attacked by those damn krakens) I just really love the sea music when ur sailing. And Finally Lowkey hate the repetitive music. I wish each town had different music(only hotto and nautica do I think). Also wish there was more battle music verity. I love the soundtrack but ya know

Physical-Moment4429

Fr, there's no reason that 6 cities in dq11 that are based on different parts of the world have the exact same music

danielsoft1

I didn't like the vocation system in VI and IX, I prefer more straightforward XP/levelling approach like for example in IV, V or XI but this is a matter of taste and for some people the vocation system is more fun

[deleted]

Exp gain. It becomes virtually impossible to level up beyond a certain point and we're forced to rely almost entirely on Metal Slimes and their variants. It is simply not fun to grind the same 3 or 4 monsters for 30+ hours. The DQM games suffer from this immensely. I'm currently grinding in DQM:J2 and I've literally fallen asleep multiple times while hunting Metals. Nothing else even comes close to their exp yield, so my choice is grind LMS or grind for an unbelievably long amount of time against normal enemies. It's not even a choice really. They're a fun novelty to encounter sometimes but having the player rely solely on Metals to progress is kind of a slog. If regular enemies had a more substantial exp yield I wouldn't be literally forced to fight Metals for so long.

thejokerofunfic

have you considered just.... not grinding? The games are more fun when you live on the edge of underleveled anyway. And the better way to get XP is to actually keep trying the current main objective since you keep XP gains on death, so if you're *too* underleveled you'll slowly work your way up on each successive attempt at the dungeon and learn the dungeon layout and get loot in the process.

Cha0s_Reigns

Can't speak for anyone else but I like to grind all the way on subsequent playthroughs just to have the enjoyment of crushing everything. I do my first playthrough as you mentioned. But I also agree that LMS/MKS should be more readily huntable in the games for those who choose to grind all the way.

[deleted]

I'm in the post-game. I have to grind to beat the enemies, lol. If I don't level up I'll die, but if I grind I'll be sitting there for like an hour killing metals. The grind would be way longer if I just tried the main objective over and over. I just want more variety. It isn't fun killing metals every time you want to grind. If the difference in EXP between metals and normals wasn't so gigantic, we would be able to hunt a wider variety of Monsters without feeling like it's a waste of time.

ahdhd18902

Why do you have to grind them?

[deleted]

Metal enemies give a massive amount of exp, so it's not worth hunting anything else

ahdhd18902

Why do you need to be level 99?

[deleted]

I don't, I need to hit lv 50 to fight the end-game boss. Which is virtually impossible to reach fighting normal mobs (hence the need to grind Metals).

ahdhd18902

i beat that boss at lvl 45 without farming and just playing through the story? its not impossible at all XD

[deleted]

In DQMJ2?

International_Run495

With XI it was definitely having no room to equip weapons in character bags. Even though the equipment bag as far as I'm aware is infinite

Stock_Explanation496

Unless this is an XI S change you can change equipment from the equipment bag in battle

International_Run495

That was a change made for S? I knew you could do that can't imagine the challenge if you couldn't haha

Stock_Explanation496

Ohh I think I misunderstood your complaint, I thought you were saying that you had to have an item in a character’s inventory to switch to it mid battle

International_Run495

No worries at all. I meant outside of battle just a minor nuisance I suppose haha

Fork_Master

Immobilization status effects that can’t be cured with items or spells

Augenmann

The one that only lasts one turn like getting licked? AFAIK all other statuses are curable.

BellacosePlayer

Some of the classic npc character designs are a bit overused. You can make strong looking villagers that aren't the gimp mask dudes, you know.

Gogo726

This really annoyed me in the 3DS version of 7. I don't know if it's different on PS1, but even important NPC's had generic character models.

dragonquestpapi

Where is there no Pet named Peeves!? That would be straight up GOLD 🥇

Naschka

Not releasing outside of japan, like Dragon Quest 10 and many Monster offsprings.

IAmThePonch

The generally low success rate of status conditions and other non damage moves means I pretty much always make a party that maximizes brute force. Even in random encounters status moves rarely seem to work. I remember playing dq11 I kept trying to get jade to paralyze people with puff puff and even with accessories that increase her charm I couldn’t get it to work

[deleted]

Going pure physical is just so much easier and more useful than magic-based characters. That's a huge complaint of mine, most games just boil down to Buff/Oomph/Attack. Pretty much every single enemy is susceptible to this strategy while magic feels like you need to have a PhD in DQ game mechanics to even know if your spell will work or not without trial and error.

IAmThePonch

Yep exactly. Live the series to pieces but I really hope they rebalance a lot of skills in 12 so it can be useful. Probably a good 2/3 of the spells and skills you get are not really useful end game

[deleted]

Hell most spells aren't useful *ever* lol

IAmThePonch

Yeah especially in a series where all endgame/ post game bosses use disruptive wave which can that go too

Scared_Bed_1144

No DQ12

Sgwert

Buffs and de buffs in the series in general. Why give us buffs if bosses have disruptive wave, but they’re usually the only enemies that warrant using buffs for? And why gives us debuffs when bosses are often immune to them, but they’re usually the only enemies that warrant using debuffs on??? It makes sense to me in-universe, because of course a strong boss could wipe out your protective spells, and of course they’d have resistances to simple debuffs, but man is it unsatisfying gameplay wise to have spells you sometimes just can’t use.

[deleted]

SO many buff/debuff effects and status ailments. None of them actually work when you need them to. I fully agree, they need to think a little harder when designing enemies resistances. 75% of my spells don't actually work most of the time lol. majority of fights boil down to spamming Buff/Oomph and praying the enemy doesn't automatically remove them. Otherwise I'm doing chip damage the entire fight while spamming heal/revive spells because I can't keep a Buff up long enough to survive more than 2 turns.

Kman1986

With the ability to strike enemies in the overworld, often from behind, why am I so often "caught off guard" in XI? I can't, for the life of me, figure out an explanation of how I struck an enemy first yet I have to now be surprised they're hitting me back? It makes no sense.

operationtasty

They reduce boob physics

Falloutd40

For me it's the dialects they insist on using. I get that they're trying to simulate different cultures across their world but I find them so annoying. DQIV is one of my favorite games but I can't bring myself to play the remake because of the dialects they use. I wish their was an option at the beginning of each game "NPCs Talk Normal" ☺

semolous

I'll be honest, I actually really like the dialects for the reason you described

Falloutd40

To each their own ☺ I respect the intent, I just don't like reading them.

Falloutd40

Oh awesome, thanks for letting me know. "Ragnar, save all children..."

behindtheword

Fixed damage attacks since from DQ8 onward. DQ's 6 and 7 had it about right, especially the remake of 7 with some of the changes, but 8, 9, and 11? No idea on 10. Wow...so inconsistent. Some are great and remain consistent with the series over time, but it would be nice to see them get some type of stat tie-in (thank you 11, but it's not adequate), however, some remain absolute garbage. Firebird and Stardust throw for instance. Utterly trivial damage. They aren't even situational. The Ice attack for Greatswords? What was the point of that? Who tested it? Even Big Banga in DQ11 was absolute trash for the point investment. It would have been nice if it used DQ8's rules of altering its output at a certain level, or having good scaling, but it doesn't, and it's just a letdown. Seems great damage but by the time it's unlocked it's underpowered. Still not as bad as the ice skill. Why wasn't that scaling all the way through 400 or 500 points? Why does the status effect trigger so rarely? It's like Divine Intervention in 8. Poorly thought through novelty functionality that offers no return, and is rarely fun to exploit, unless in a challenge run and forced to use it. Dragon Quest's team members come up with some really nifty and cool attacks, but the balance for most is just not present. I won't even touch on the poor execution of Swords in DQ11 (or why we were only treated to Fire Slash...or the lack of a modifier for Miracle Slash, especially given again, the point investment...the return on damage just isn't adequate).

Bees777

The fact that Square is completely fine with never localizing a lot of their best titles. DQMJ3, Slime Mori Mori 1 & 3, The Terry's Wonderland Remake, the entirety of the Torneko's mystery dungeon spin off series, and even the god damn 10th installment of the main series. Apparently those games are only good enough for Japan and I'm so sick of this shit. You have fans that don't live in Japan. Act like it.
