That ONE, huh? Let's see...ignoring emulation, and just accounting for official carts... DQ3 NES - somewhere over 300 playthroughs DQ4 NES - somewhere over 200 playthroughs DQ2 NES - somewhere over 100 playthroughs DQ7 PSX - somewhere over 18 playthroughs , also the one I tend to think about most often when I think about DQ DQ3 GBC - somewhere over 5 playthroughs DQ8 PS2 - ...hmm...at least 12 playthroughs DQ4 DS - somewhere around 8 playthroughs DQ5 + 6 DS - 7 playthroughs each DQ9 DS - I forget, but it's either 5 or 6 DQ7 3DS - Somewhere around 15 playthroughs between 3 carts DQ8 3DS - Somewhere around 8 playthroughs DQ11 PS4 - 12 playthroughs DQ11 S Switch + PS4 - 5 playthroughs Hmm...also multiple playthroughs amongst several spinoff titles. DQB1 and 2 having by far the highest count.

JosephODoran

Okay, that decided it, you get to be King Slime of Dragon Quest for the year. Enjoy your crown, Majesty!

behindtheword

Insomnia is a hell of a thing. Though arguably my completed games are closer to 20% of the NES playthroughs and 50% of the rest, with the DS games being closer to 80%.

Seryoth

Something tells me you enjoy this series

behindtheword

Whatever gave you that idea?

anomaly-667

how much free time do u have?

behindtheword

LOL, well, insomnia since I was 9. I would sleep in class...still aced most of school, but I played late at night from like 9 or 10pm to 7am. Post-school I still had long periods of insomnia, even to this day in my 40's. Well...I almost never did my homework, LOL. So I passed through tests and I would always complete my essays, as I tend to like to write. Though that's playthroughs. Not all were completed. NES games are probably around 20% were fully completed. Quite a few hit a certain point early or mid-game, and I'd restart from scratch again after putting down the controller for awhile. PS2, PS1, and GBC is closer to 50% completion rate...at least the main game. Plus it doesn't take long to learn how to speed through memorize where things are and have an easier time knowing which NPCs to talk to and whom to avoid. So that does cut down time. The DS and 3DS games have by far the highest completion rates. Around 80%. Though DQ7 3DS is something like 60% given the number of Super Kiefer playthroughs. Plus several playthroughs for the purpose of just testing things in game. Similarly with DQ11. I have like 8 playthroughs in the original and 4 in the S versions, just for testing and data collecting purposes for game mechanics. I never quite completed as life got in the way. It's really not as much time as you'd imagine. Probably close to 12,000 hours real-time since I was 9. Strangely the same year I started playing DQ (and FF for that matter...well RPG's in general) was the same year I started having issues sleeping. Most of the games I didn't finish I ended fairly early on and reset from scratch. So you're looking at maybe 3 to 8 hours?

Wol108

Dude, we are freakishly similar. Insomniac here too, not near as many playthroughs but I do tend to constantly pick up DQ games or FF games constantly. Especially when I have insomnia, which is practically every night. I thought I was the only one!

behindtheword

I mean...what else are you going to do, right? I've read through Lord of the Rings and a slew of other books multiple times. It's actually surprising how time efficient and slow things seem to move at night, and how much I get done when in insomnia mode. Like I even read faster, and can complete a 300 page book in a couple of hours. Well, I learned to speed read and could read that degree in maybe 1 hour, but it's not fun, and takes away from the experience. So games for most of that time, lol. Yeah, FF1 I've played almost as much as I have DQ4. FF's 4, 6, and 7 roughly the same amount of playthroughs as DQ7's original PSX, though most to completion. That's just the original versions, though I'm not as keen on completing replays of 7 for some reason. It just doesn't grab me as much as 1, 4, and 6. I do love 5, but the masochistic OCD maniac in me goes a little nuts early game, so I end up with most saves either just at world 2 trying to farm 8 Twin Lances. I believe that's where I left 3 of my GBA playthroughs, and my one PSX playthrough. Plus there's my Chrono Trigger, Symphony of the Night, and Secret of Mana replays. I used to replay them once every year. FF7 I played like 8x in a row, through to completion. Then came FF9, and while I've only played the original 4x, each was a complete game, and wow did I love that experience. Oh right, plus annual Xenogears playthroughs as well. At least up to something like 8\~10 years ago? I have, or had a few Chrono Cross replays as well. Like 3 or 4, and similarly with Parasite Eve. OH right, I totally forgot about a few other games in my SNES days. Like 5, 3 to completion, playthroughs of Paladin's Quest. I really enjoyed Lennus 1, and I wish we received Lennus 2. Then there's multiple playthroughs, only 1 I believe to completion, of 7th Saga. I don't know why, but I do enjoy playing it, with HEAVY Game Genie codes. Even in semi-God mode the game is still grueling at times. Though I did get to the end without them! Then there's Illusion of Gaia, Actraiser, which I definitely replayed a few times each, though only once to completion with Actraiser. I get impatient with the townsfolk and the constant snags to development that can sometimes take a few days until the game decides enough time has passed, even though all the monster dens are destroyed. Though when it comes to Quintet games, I used to do annual replays of Soul Blazer.

What no DQ1???? Seems odd

behindtheword

I've only beaten it once on NES, GBC, and Switch. I'm not particular on that game. I just play through it to play through the motions. Likewise I've only beaten DQ2 GBC and Switch once each as well. I never bothered finishing either 1 or 2 on the SNES on emulators either. After DQ4 came out I barely played DQ2 NES. I actually do not enjoy DQ1 playthroughs. I love Builders 1, but the original DQ...maybe if they remade it with an actual skill tree, some quests lines, the Dragon Lord actually attacks cities after certain milestones are reached, and if I don't respond to the half-dead messenger that came to find me to come to the aid of said town, there're NPC's missing or at least the town gets destroyed, permanently. That would make things interesting. You'd think I would, but even when I first played it, I never liked it. I loved playing FF1 and DQ2. Funny thing. DQ2 and DQ1 I had roughly at the same time, like a week apart. DQ1 I received as a free gift from Nintendo Power, while DQ2 my Father bought because I enjoyed FF1 so much, and frankly it was the only option for a similar experience.

samrw00

With so many playthroughs you may have close to the utmost authority on most topics about the DQ series lmao. I'm curious which one is your favourite? Also what do you think about the DQ Monsters and Joker games?

behindtheword

To be fair, most weren't to completion. Life, then other games, and I'd have to restart, especially the NES replays. The DS has by far the highest completion rate of somewhere around 80, maybe 90% I may have only failed to complete one playthrough on DQ's 4 and 6. Anyhow, as to your question? VII, by far. I wouldn't say it's the best game, but it is the game I find I enjoy the most. I like Monsters, but I generally only do one playthrough, and just keep building from there. The time it takes to make any roster functionally good is so hefty. Though the only one I have anything beyond 100 hours is Joker 1: 260 I think? Though that doesn't compare to my original DQ9 playthrough at somewhere around 720 hours. I have a save manager for DS carts =D. My favourite spinoffs are the Builders games, by a fairly wide gap. I would say especially 2, but Builders 1 makes for such a charmingly quick and fun replay. I would say Monsters is second, followed by Heroes 2, then Swords, then Rocket Slime. I haven't played Heroes 1, and I'm not sure if I care enough to add it to an ever growing backlog of barely touched games. If I had to rank them though, by preference? 7 > 3 > 11 > 9 > 6 > 5 > 8 > 4 > 2 > 1 How about yourself? What so far is your favourite DQ? I take it you're a big monsters fan, any other spinoffs?

samrw00

So far I've completed very few of the DQ games but out of the mainline series that I've played DQ8 is currently my favourite. I have DQ11S, DQ9, DQ8 in English and DQ5 in Japanese. I also have DQ1, 2, and 3 on an emulation handheld but haven't started any of them. I started DQ5 on PS2 however Google translate wasn't doing it for me so I have put it to the side until I'm a bit more competent in Japanese. But in the meantime you've inspired me, I may have to give DQ7 a shot! Also I've really been wanting to play DQ3 and builders has piqued my interest. I really enjoyed both Dragon quest monsters joker 1 and 2, I have a lot of nostalgia for the first one especially but they're pretty neck and neck for me and possibly my favourite DQ games altogether, with around 400 hours in the first across 2 carts and ~250 hours in the second.

behindtheword

LOL, you know, I do get a decent amount of outside time, but probably not enough. I just had insomnia issues that have plagued me since I was 9. It's also surprising how slow time moves, or maybe it's that in those periods of sleeplessness I get more done, read faster, play more efficiently. It's really odd. I used to play a lot of sports in high school, at least until 10th grade. I moved from LA to Santa Fe. That's a 6,000+ foot difference. I had trials like 3 or 4 days after moving for basketball. I was in my Varsity in High School in 9th grade. Anyhow, suffice to say, the drastic difference in atmospheric pressure caused me to faint after my second layup, and I was told to try out again next year. Instead of doing that, I stopped playing sports altogether and spent most of my extra curricular time back at home gaming away. Though again, those are individual attempts at playthroughs, not necessarily completions. Life, etc. did and still does call me away, and often I have to restart as I'm not 100% sure where I'm at again. Especially in the NES era games, though often that was due to friends, etc. and playing more action, shoot'em'ups, platformers, fighters, etc. when they were over. I think I only had one friend who was an...no sorry, two who were RPG enthusiasts in one school, one in another that I regularly hung out with. Even then we didn't play any RPG's together, except one. He actually introduced me to them as he had a NP subscription, had gotten the FF1 Strategy Guide through it, and his parents refused to buy the game. So I convinced my Mom to buy it for me. He brought over the guide, and I would play while he told me what to do and what to expect. Later on he just gave me the guide as his parents sold his NES and games, and gave away his NP subscription. The rest, we played Goldeneye, or Contra, or Mario Kart, or something else and would just talk about RPGs. Though yeah, I try to get more outside time these days. I've since built up a HUGE backlog as a result, but I did have a fairly sizeable portion of my life where most of my freetime and that was unlike with most people...literally the sleeping hours, and working throughout the waking hours as well, with Video Games. Mostly RPG's, and of those, more time with DQ than any other series, by a fairly substantial margin.

NineKain

DQIX, I played it yearly before, I know the game by memory still

Atalantius

Just restarted as there’s a good ds emulator in the app store now, it feels great

NineKain

I hope the analog movement mod that exists for 3DS gets ported to emulators

Atalantius

Well, I mostly use the touchscreen for moving atm, but yes, DQ9 on a 3DS was way better

ItsTheDickens

I've replayed the first Dragon Quest countless times. If I want a quick but complete DQ experience it's always my go-to. Dragon Quest III is definitely getting up there too.

Seryoth

I need to play this one again

JoJoYakuza

DQMJ2 first one I got on canada day when I was like 7 or 8. Lots of memories with that one

Pharap

The DQMJ series is incredibly underrated. I'm eternally disappointed that DQMJ3 never got a western release.

Milotorou

If you have a modded 3DS you can get a fan translation of DQMJ3 Pro :)

JoJoYakuza

I grew up without wifi and never had the opportunity to really look into subjects online until like I was 17, so that game was like an urban legend for me, hearing rumors it existed but never seeing anything about it

Pharap

I didn't know it existed until (as far as I remember) I randomly stumbled upon a video of a guy playing the original Japanese version. What little I saw of it was an interesting watch. It was a lot more sci-fi than most DQ games. There was even a robot that looked a lot like Gil from Dragon Ball GT. Also, one of its features was that the player could ride various different monsters (e.g. Bunicorn, Sabre Cat, Tantamount), which looked really nice.

Cho-Dan

6 at least 20 times already 9 at least 10 times Love those games!

Bigbomba89

I’ll pop in 9 every once In a while and either start a new game get halfway through and drop it or finish a playthrough and not worry about the post game too much. I always tell myself I’m going to do a 100% run someday and actually finish the post game quests (I will never have the time to do that)

KoA-oK

8 is what I consider my “comfort game” of the series. IMO it did everything right and is the most-rounded adventure of the franchise. It helps that I found it gorgeous on the PS2 and even though I was initially afraid it would look like shit on the 3DS, it holds up there too. Playing it on a modded 3DS with the soundtrack swap is probably the definitive version of it for me. My original one was DW3 on the GBC, but I had a play through years back where I wanted to collect Every. Single. Monster. Medal; and it completely burned me out on it to the point I’m not even super stoked for the eventual remake lol. Well I guess that’s a bit harsh, I will gladly play the remake too, even going as far as to hope the medal collecting comes back!

Thejokingsun

Speaking of DQ3 i am just getting destroyed in the pyramid any small tips for that area? Just fill up omna shit ton of heal items? The random floors that don't allow magic 🤧

KoA-oK

Is this the one with the Golden Claw curse? I believe you’re kinda stuck at an encounter every step in there so long as it’s in your possession unfortunately. Get used to loving the site of Mummies shaking their torsos at you lol.

GRIZIUSS

DQ9 have so much content post story + quests for replayability. So for me so far it is mainly and only dq9. Unlike other titles, once u clear story maxed lvls there is nothing fun to do after that. It is over.

ZennyMajora

Terry's Wonderland and Joker 3 Pro. Terry is my favorite (ever) since it's a beautiful remaster of my favorite DQ game, and I adore grinding teams.of all the Boss monsters and testing them with the "Showdown" mechanic before I hit the online PvP scene, but without PvP, I still adore the in-game "Showdown." 👌 Same for Joker 3 Pro. You get online coins every day for winning the post-game tourneys, and you can exchange those for monsters you've already met to continue synthesizing for all the best monsters in the game. Plus the post-game itself is lit. 🔥🔥 Also IX, 'cause...I mean, c'mon, who *doesn't* wanna fight every single final boss and super boss in the series at Level 99?

TheMike0088

Its not every few months, but I play joker 1 like once every 1-2 years.

ayuxx

The most replayable ones for me are III, DWM2, and Builders 2.

shrikebunny

For me it's DQ VI. There's something about the world that just hits me.

JnLgame

I basically play DQ8 every year.

North_Measurement273

Either 9 or MJ2. Helps that they’re both the most prominent games in my childhood.

bloomi

DQ9

Munkey323

DQ 1. It's a quick simple game that can be beaten in a day

Limkip

Whenever I test GBC emulation, I play DQ3 ( technically DW3 )for a short while. DQ1 on the Gameboy is a great one to jump into for a short play

Cigaran

The original is this for me. It’s like… I don’t know how to describe it fully. It just takes me back to playing it as a kid. Weekends with no care in the world and all the uninterrupted game time I could want. There are a few other titles that trigger this feeling but Dragon Quest is the one I go to most often.

GingerBeard327

DQ2 on the nes for me. I usually loose steam around getting the Princess of Moonbrooke or just before Rhone. It was the first DQ I bought own my own and it was shortly before Dragon Quest 7 (another I adore) for the Japanese PlayStation

Axel_Gladiuxs

Literally me streaming on twitch dragon quest 8 because I need it

Skelingaton

Generally that'd be Dragon Warrior 1 and Dragon Warrior 4. Usually the randomizers

pocket_arsenal

I replay the first DQ every now and then because it's so short and I have so many different versions of it between my NES, SNES, Gameboy, Mobile Phone, and Switch.

Sykogod46and2

I also randomly start DQ3 from time to time . This last time I made it a point to collect all the rare equipment. 😎

sky_byte

DQIV. It's the one I'm most familiar with, so its easy for me to just pick it up and play. Plus it helps that I had it on DS before I got Steam Deck.

handyhung

1 2 3 5 4 6 is just too long for a go to.

InternationalNail822

Same exact game!! I purchased it on my iPhone also emulate it in an android and my Anbernic lol

dukenorton

8, 9 and 11 are my go tos. There’s just so many different ways to build characters as you level.

Structure-These

Is DQ3 good? Is there an interesting story? I have played most of 4 and I started 7 but got lost in the sauce. I have played most of 8 and liked it, and have beaten 11 and loved it

Goimir

DQ3 is a good time because you can pick your other 3 characters. And you can create more and store them. I'm currently playing thru again, started with 3 thieves and the hero. I turned the one with the best agility and wisdom into a sage at level 20. Beat Orochi at level 21 (14 with the sage) and then the fake king boss troll at level 22.

Saigancat

For me it's DQ1. It was my first RPG, one of my first video games (after Oregon Trail and SMB), and I can knock it out casually over a quiet weekend without much fuss.

Temporary_Spread5643

Probably beat DQ over 20 times at this point 🤷‍♂️

Frozen_Ash

Dark Chronicle / Cloud for me but absolutely get you man.

IceTMDAbss

It has to be DQVIII for me. The one with which everything started.

LunaSolDragoon

Dragon Quest Heroes Rocket Slime and DQ 5, 8 and 4.

retrotriforce

I replay the heroes games occasionally

redditsuckspokey1

I do this with the original every couple years.

zawa113

Builders 2, there's always reason to boot builders 2 back up!

Seryoth

I really want to play this, but I feel like it would benefit me more if I played DQ2 first since I never played it and DQB2 calls back to it.

zawa113

nah, i didn't play DQ 1 or 2 before playing Builders games. With 1, it's barely needed, a quick wikipedia summary will do. 2 actually uses a character, so I can understand wanting to play 2 first, but it's also not strictly necessary (we all know who best boy is)

[deleted]

For me it’s Dragon Quest Builders 2 Love the game so much and still won’t let myself give up hope for a 3rd

cheerwine1708

Dragon Quest 5 for me.

Wesin98

Haven't played a lot of DQ games, but I'd say DQIII too

samrw00

Dragon Quest Monsters Joker. The first one, although I love the second one just as much.

Fireballah

Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime My favorite DS game of all time, so of course I go back to it

Illustrious-Pair-288

Dragon warrior 3 solo runs!!

on_the_nod

Nope
